I thought the ending of american psycho demonstrated how unreliable of a narrator Bateman was. Once you realize that there’s no possible way he could have fed a cat to an ATM or blown up those police cars, and that some of the people we saw him kill are not dead, it puts into question the entire story. Is he really that attractive, wealthy, or cunning?
This movie was a feast for the mind, and it's just that, an over excessive feast with more than enough to fill the mind but also way more than what is needed to satisfy an overarching theme.
I believe some of the stuff we saw like the ATM and killing spree weren’t true but there’s no denying he killed people and people covered it up the unmistakable misidentification between all the characters isn’t by accident
No joke I was telling someone like two days ago that "If Anton Chigurh had a cooler haircut, these 'literally me' people would be talking about him too". The fact that you put him in the thumbnail and talked about him in the video makes me feel so god damn vindicated, thank you
It bugs me so much when people complain about Chigurh's hair. That is both part of his mystique and makes him creepier than he would otherwise be. P.S. watch the first season of Fargo. There is a character who is like Anton Chigurh on steroids...
@@wet-read Oh don't get me wrong, I think his design is perfect in that movie, it actually makes way more sense than a social outcast like "the Driver" being hot and fashionable and played by Ryan Gosling. I'm just saying that the people who find these "literally me" characters cool won't think he's cool because he's not conventionally attractive. Also yes now that you mention it, Billy Bob Thornton also has kind of a stupid haircut in that show
For me, the 'literally me' trope represents the goal. These are characters who have at least a somewhat difficult life, but find a way to do something, anything, to rise out of it. It's a mental, as well as physical, escape from the dull, depressing cycle of life.
Very good analysis I know a lot of people make fun of this trend or jokingly refer to characters as 'literally me', but I believe that behind every meme and every _sigma male compilation #52_ there is a degree of honesty, which is why I think movies of this type are really important. First an important thing to get out of the way is that 'literally me' is a phrase exaggerated for comedic effect. It is not that people view the characters as actual versions of themselves, but rather that there is an aspect of these characters that makes them relatable or allows on to empathize with them. These aspects, as everyone surely noticed, are different negative emotions- loneliness, alienation, insincerity, fake personas, (paradoxically) inability to empathize with other people, a desire for affection etc. Expressing these emotions through characters in a film allows us to be more aware of them, to start to think about why do we feel a certain way, where does this feeling come from, whether it's telling me something and so on. But perhaps more importantly it almost creates a sense of comradery in showing that you are not alone and there are other people that too feel this way and are misunderstood, which in turn also allows one to cope and reconcile with these emotions. My 'literally me' movie was Into the Wild. It's a good movie by itself, but before watching it I was certain that I am the only person who has this burning urge to leave everything behind and just run away into the woods, living exclusively off my own fruits of labour. These thoughts were so bad that I genuinely thought I'm mentally ill for a long time, and perhaps I was. But watching this movie was such a catharsis, if you've never experienced this then you would simply be unable to comprehend it. It's like a literal boulder was lifted from my soul. Finding out that the main character, based off a real person, shared these same struggles made me feel so much more calm, and after finding other people who enjoyed this movie and felt the same way I was actually able to finally reconcile with myself and subdue this desire. Important to note is that this experience didn't kill it, but made me able to control it. I'm still obsessed with self sufficiency and I still get the urge to run away from my problems and to never return, but the difference is that now I don't have to do so to feel whole and happy, and that in spite of me being unable to do so I can still find things to enjoy in life and be happy
The Joker is what i really saw as the most fitting "relatable" character, except of killing people irl Arthur is a person in the society where society itself wouldn't careless of his existence he tried and tried to be seen but people just can't seem to understand his need of attention hence him resulting for him making the people see him by killing 3 men in the subway. He had this crippling depression springled with more than 1 dissorder, he was potrayed as someone who was driven off of society someone who we could call as a loser and well most people felt like this
You said it really well yourself, that these characters aren’t so much “literally me” but more so the standard of how cool one would like to be. The “literally me” name is a misnomer as these characters embody a variety of fantasies that appeal to males. Hmm, I think your probably right. But it shouldn't really be like that. People just haven't developed a personality because we aren't going out and living anymore. Like a good amount of dudes are 21, living with their parents, virgins, (which aren't terrible) but a lot aren't employed, lazy, unmotivated, empty, lack of meaning. It is real sad to see.
I completely agree. So many men who related to this movie are just lonely and sad and above all, uninteresting. This isn’t an unsolvable dilemma, but these movies show how men can solve their emptiness - and it’s NOT by filling the hole inside them with more of nothing (money, rage, power). They need to connect to other people most of all
I think my personal favourite "literally me" character from film is 'Dfens' from Falling down. He's not particularly cool, but I really related to a lot of his reasoning in the film. It's cathartic to see him say "no, this is how it should be!" And cause destruction and mayhem in his wake because of this. He rampages through bullshit and it feels great seeing him right the 'wrongs' in reality he sees. But the best part is how the film gets you. You get on board with this protagonist, love all the violent acts he does, get a great vicarious power trip from his actions, then the plot twists and we see just how barbaric and selfish he is acting. The film tricks you into relating to the guy, only to show us what kinda person actually does that sort of stuff. It makes you feel the ugly side of all the cool violence this guy commits, what it truly means. It's a beautiful subversion of the power fantasy protagonists, and I think tries to warn us against the glorification of 'the man who won't take it anymore." The line at the end of the film "I'm the bad guy?!" It's just brilliant.

In the Joker, it's obvious that the system meant to help with Fleck's mental illness is failing him, which we see immediately through his meeting with the therapist. Everything else that follows is just a result of his environment, not of his actions, not until we see his first kills. It's then he realizes, in that ominous bathroom ballet, he has some sort of control for once in his life. And when we see his transformation into the Joker, the blood smear smile is great and all but it's hard to cheer for the tragic comedy we witnessed. You're take on the "literally me" aspect of the movie makes sense when it comes to people with mental illness relating to that character but its also troubling to think some people would WANT to relate to Arthur Fleck. It's a really great origin story for fans of the comics but analyzing it from a critical point of view, Arthur had to resort to chaos and violence in order to sense some sort of order in his own life. What I think is kinda sad that most of the “literally me“ characters in pop culture are men. And mostly it’s about them hiding their emotions and than letting them go, like Joker. I think most men relate to them cause they feel like they can’t show emotion…
i’m wondering why Baby Driver isn’t thought of as one of these movies and characters. Maybe because Baby isn’t a doomer? I see that movie as super similar to drive but also a little different because Baby isn’t lonely. idk. i think it deserves more recognition

I remember when my mother watched and she said " Why does he haves the same personality as you? He's a narcissist just like you" It's a fact that Patrick Bateman is literally me because my told so
Yikes someone who is supposed to love you said that to you? Sounds like what my narcissist mother says to me whenever she is trying to cover her own abusive ways. Watch your back man. ❤

"In depth"? There is no thesis here. It's hardly analysis. The reason why people relate to these characters is because society is superficial and alienating.. It's not propaganda for bad people, these films (most films probably) are dialogues with the human soul. If your comfortable in your shallow end of the pool. Stay there, cause the world is uncomfortable and doesn't care about you- And that will turn the nicest person into a monster. This video is profoundly unsympathetic and punitive. Honestly I disagree with what you say about American psycho. He isn’t a victim of the conformity we’re forced into: he is the exact embodiment of that conformity. He is the need to fit in and he even tells us this at the beginning of the film - “there is no Patrick Bateman, only an abstraction”. Watching the film, or better still reading the book, and thinking of him as a cliche rather than a human provides a much better idea for what Ellis was trying to communicate
Bro this video is fucking sick, I struggle a bit with English since I'm Spanish speaking but you should rially invest in some slightly better mic, or put subtitles in your videos since it was kinda hard to understand, either way you have a new sub, I loved to see what you're gonna become
I think Anton characters relate to those who felt that they need to follow a certain code of rule in order to manage their life, and often these people when they're not following those code felt something wrong and then bad things happened.
The only time i felt like "that's literally me" was with the only videogame that has managed to make me genuinely cry. It was right at the end of Yakuza Like a Dragon when **spoilers** Kasuga tells Ryo Aoki that even though he killed (not directly) the most important person of his life, he still forgives him saying that he doesn't want to lose him too, that even though he ruined his life he still considers him his brother even if Ryo doesn't. I won't say i'm anything like Kasuga, he is cool and can see past his own desires, but for that moment and that moment only... I felt like he was me right then and there, that i would have made the same desicion than him, that no matter what the other party did to me, if i care for them I would have looked past it all and just forgave everything with no grudge hold against them, as Kasuga himself puts it: "I want for you to start from rock bottom, and i'll be there with you the whole way back up". So yeah, i guess Kasuga Ichiban was (at least for a breaf moment) my "literally me" character
I don’t usually cry during video games, but the final confrontation between Ichiban and Masato in Yakuza: Like a Dragon almost made me cry. I can’t say i’m similar to Ichiban either, but he is a character that I’m honestly inspired by. Ichiban definitely is a great and down-to-earth character.
The amount of people who have talked about American Psycho and what it's about and blah blah blah. Is pretty ironic, because the movie being about how people blend in with one another and yet the amount of summaries and video essays about it have them all blend together with the same ideas.
The core of the literally me joke is that all these characters are mentally insane. Imo the point is the feeling of slowly losing your mind just like in Joker
So why do white men get upset when you basically confirmed everything with their pedestalization of unhinged psychopaths? Why get upset when people call you the devil? Or that Africans and black Americans don't see you guys as saviors? The world is correcting itself by shifting their perspective. The West is more like these psychopaths than saints
@A Bug or a Feature Productions you gotta chill bro 😂😂😂where is this energy coming from? Relax. Storytelling meaning how he analyzes/breaks down what he's talking about along with his pacing. This was a well made video mostly in part due to his narration/articulation of his thoughts. Sure the message can be simple but that doesn't mean it can't be explained in a unique way, which is what he definitely delivered.
@@Villainz oh that's funny here I thought Storytelling had something to do with... telling stories. You're right, there was NOOOO reason to correct you. Storytelling is alot more about having a conversational pace.. How could I forget that storytelling is alot more like waffling or small talk than having anything of value to share. Mature people can admit their mistakes. And aren't afraid of learning something new. Mature people also think BEFORE they share their half baked opinions In the future a mature response to being told you're objectively wrong would be something like: "you're right I misspoke" or "you're right I didn't use that word the right way, faux pause happen!" 👍

King of Comedy is pretty required watching for an analysis of The Joker, as is Taxi Driver. Both, not coincidentally, starring Robert DeNiro, but King of Comedy has more paralells imho
Just a reminder: "lead character" ≠ "good guy". And anarchy ≠ chaos. In casual conversation, sure, but not in this case. What Tyler creates in "Fight Club" is outright _fascism._ Fincher even literally said that. He also laughed in a Bateman-like reaction to being confronted with the fact that so many viewers failed to see any message beyond "Tyler is everything you're not", especially "cool". I wonder how he feels about it now that so many altright lost boys idolise that villain (and Tyler _is_ a horrible villain) what with their lack of media literacy and misdirected aggression. I'm not blaming Fincher, mind. "Death of the author" and that. Just... idk. Could've done things a bit differently. And as a final note, an inb4, I love that movie, even with its faults. (Since the first time I saw it at age 15.) I don't love the fans.
They start a fight club 1999, taxi driver 1976. Did you leave the years in your script and not notice? Was this made by AI? Edit after looking through the comments: am I the only one who noticed this?
I don't think people actually relate to these characters. It's just a few individuals who create memes mocking it, but then people who've never seen the films see clips and edits where there's a deep/gangsta quote that they "relate" to without actually having any similarities to the character in the first place. This is especially true for Taxi Driver and Fight Club. Although the whole point of these films is that it reflects actual people in society, and the audience to an extent, the people saying "literally me fr" are either propagating the joke or aren't aware of the full story. Although, it could be argued that this disregarding way of thinking is exactly what leads to real people fostering a mindset like Ed Norton and Robert de Niro's characters, as we've tragically seen time and again in recent years.
A thing to note; fiction blurs reality. "I literally wish I was half as cool as them" everyone is infinitely cooler, than some... fiction.. some lie :D where people act... most of the world is fake and we can only see through a mirror darkly, without God's help.
The video and script are well made new sub here. No way people outside of edgelords and autists identify with these characters as "literally me". All of these characters are jokes and nearly cartoon characters.
What I think helps a lot of people to project themselves onto these character is that they have very little actual character, or developement for that matter, they all mostly show their facade. I mean, for some of them we don't even get their real name. I also think you could have engaged more critically with the portrayal of these characters.
The closest I can think of for literally me is the dude from the big lebowski which is funny cause he used to be my dad. Guess you really do become your parents
Patrick Bateman is not a hustler. Hustle how? One of the running jokes is that he's never actually working, everyone at the company has these senior vice president titles but who among them is ever working? I truely believe if this "Literally like me" thing means anything other than some incel's sigma grindset wet dream misreading of a movie of a book they didn't read, postmodern Patrick and Anton Dr Death Chighur are not it. Like Bateman said they are abstractions, not personality types, trust me, they're built different.
"Literally me": proceeds to point at movies that depict some pretty deprived psychopathic men XD (all great movies tho, even if I don't really care much for The Joker apart from good acting)
people that actually relate to these characters in a non ironic way, are just sad people who want to be something else other than who tey are, the very idea of themselves kind of makes them be sad, and they see in fictional characters a way to escape their unavoidable truth that they are just simply not that interesting

What I think is kinda sad that most of the “literally me“ characters in pop culture are men. And mostly it’s about them hiding their emotions and than letting them go, like Joker. I think most men relate to them cause they feel like they can’t show emotion…
There are some female characters like this, mostly moody goth girls or "quirky" ones
i’m wondering why Baby Driver isn’t thought of as one of these movies and characters. Maybe because Baby isn’t a doomer? I see that movie as super similar to drive but also a little different because Baby isn’t lonely. idk. i think it deserves more recognition
and, ICYMI, Sean Bateman is Patrick's brother in the great film adaptation of BEE's novel, Rules of Attraction, a low-key literally me character [and, ironically, literally me]. well, Victor as well, but that's another aesthetic, BASED hedonista + narcissism.
.
When I watched American Psycho for the first I didn't knew what was the "literally me" meme but when he said "I want to fit in" I immediately related to him. I remember when my mother watched and she said " Why does he haves the same personality as you? He's a narcissist just like you" It's a fact that Patrick Bateman is literally me because my told so
Sound’s more like she is the narcissist. Who is gaslighting you😢❤
Yikes someone who is supposed to love you said that to you? Sounds like what my narcissist mother says to me whenever she is trying to cover her own abusive ways. Watch your back man. ❤
@@Ikaros23 what the fuck is gaslight
My mother tells me too I'm a narcissist and that I inherited it from my father
@@EchelonPandora that’s an awful thing to say if she is not only dogging you but also your dad without absolute reason. And not saying it to you in a way like hey I notice these traits in you I care about You and I think we could find you some help with it. Not just eww you’re a narcissist like your father
i love ur video! really in-depth and good, can't wait for ur next video
"In depth"?
There is no thesis here.
It's hardly analysis.
The reason why people relate to these characters is because society is superficial and alienating..
It's not propaganda for bad people, these films (most films probably) are dialogues with the human soul.
If your comfortable in your shallow end of the pool. Stay there, cause the world is uncomfortable and doesn't care about you-
And that will turn the nicest person into a monster.
This video is profoundly unsympathetic and punitive. "HOW DARE THE SOUL RELATE TO CARNAGE HOW DAR YOU STARE INTO THE VOID AND SEE ANYTHING OTHER THAN RACIALLY AMIGIOUS CAREBARES!!!"
It would be nice, but the wold can't be all good vibes..
Unless you IGNORE most of it.

This video deserves more attention.
@@Woodchain i couldn't agree more with you, everyone should strive to be as kind and brave as Ichiban is
What happened to movies man. Nothing comes close to these masterpieces.

Thanks God for finally including Anton
This was a great video. Keep making content! 🤞
American Psycho is a dark comedy, biting satire, feminist political film, and slasher film all in one. Patrick Bateman is also literally me.
def need more of these videos
Great video bro!! Def tons of potential in your storytelling and editing! Looking forward to more
So why do white men get upset when you basically confirmed everything with their pedestalization of unhinged psychopaths? Why get upset when people call you the devil? Or that Africans and black Americans don't see you guys as saviors? The world is correcting itself by shifting their perspective. The West is more like these psychopaths than saints
What story was told here?
What are you smoking?
Is the story "movies with antihero sometimes are popular"?
Cause that's what I'm getting here
@A Bug or a Feature Productions you gotta chill bro 😂😂😂where is this energy coming from?
Mature people also think BEFORE they share their half baked opinions
In the future a mature response to being told you're objectively wrong would be something like: "you're right I misspoke" or "you're right I didn't use that word the right way, faux pause happen!" 👍
@@Villainz tell me what it's like to be so empty headed... I'm curious
I'm literally leon in the beginning of racoon city on ps1 like legit literally that is me.

Amazing video ❤
King of Comedy is pretty required watching for an analysis of The Joker, as is Taxi Driver. Both, not coincidentally, starring Robert DeNiro, but King of Comedy has more paralells imho
Hearing someone use the phrase "the late 1900s" makes me feel sooo old
i think donnie darko and joe from blade runner 2049 could be considered literally me characters
Ron from Observe and Report was for me
a character like this.....
The main character from Under The Silver Lake belongs here too.
u missed elliot anderson from mr robot i know he is from a show but still hes pretty "literally me"
Just a reminder: "lead character" ≠ "good guy".
Driver is literally me.
An ordinary man working as a welder, reserved nature with no close friends. Although I'm not that attractive.
In American Psycho the whole conclusion of the movie is that all of the violence and murder was in his head not actually done
SHINADA
Don't forget to read the sequel to the book. It's a comic book series, pretty good read.
Nice soundtrack
They start a fight club 1999, taxi driver 1976. Did you leave the years in your script and not notice? Was this made by AI?
Edit after looking through the comments: am I the only one who noticed this?
Sorry i'm late to respond but me mentioning the years was just a really dumb attempt at me being funny.

Can you please do a "me video" on guts from berserk?
Ghost is littral me
Very cool video
Paul Allen is literally me!
A thing to note; fiction blurs reality. "I literally wish I was half as cool as them"
everyone is infinitely cooler, than some... fiction.. some lie :D where people act... most of the world is fake and we can only see through a mirror darkly, without God's help.
The video and script are well made new sub here.
No way people outside of edgelords and autists identify with these characters as "literally me". All of these characters are jokes and nearly cartoon characters.
Autistic? Don't say that dude. They have nothing to do with dumbasses latching themsleves onto psychopaths. And if you think they do, please explain.

What I think helps a lot of people to project themselves onto these character is that they have very little actual character, or developement for that matter, they all mostly show their facade. I mean, for some of them we don't even get their real name.
I also think you could have engaged more critically with the portrayal of these characters.
Yeah, you’re right. Looking back at this video, I realized some of these analysis’s could’ve been more in-depth.

These characters are the male equivalent of Wednesday Addams for basic western girls.
Lol. I like the old Wednesday by Christina Ricci, but yes, she (at least the new one) has been adopted by real basic b****es.

people that actually relate to these characters in a non ironic way, are just sad people who want to be something else other than who tey are, the very idea of themselves kind of makes them be sad, and they see in fictional characters a way to escape their unavoidable truth that they are just simply not that interesting
