  • The reason I didn't intend on posting this reaction...is because I forgot I did it
    ^_^
One of you nice commenters suggested Gacharic Spin's Tamashii live. It got mixed in with a few other videos I was working on.
Now that my bass cover of this same piece is out, I figured I should probaly get this out too.

Koga may not be the best singer but NOBODY can yell at a microphone like she can. This whole band is pure energy!!

I certainly did not see that coming.

With Tamashii 2019, I love the overall energy and how happy (above her normal baseline levels of radiating joy) yuri looks to effectively be playing a drum duet with hana and how much Koga & Angie are hyping the crowd, the whole arrangement is hype energy.
Koga until recently pretty much didn't sing beyond gang vocals/shouts, the rest of the band used to half joke that vocally she was tone deaf. But she took that her area of weakness to work on when the band was shut down from touring during the pandemic and now sometimes joins in on choruses and the like. As founding member/defacto leader of the band, she's also in charge of the public announcement parts of the MC-ing and frequently gets emotional/cries at big gigs whenever discussing any hardships the band got through over the years.
Tomo-zo is a low key shredder with added funk chops, you also need to check out some of the songs where she also takes the lead vocals. Her actual musical origins involved wanting to be an idol as a teenager, so the songs often have her living out some of those unfulfilled dreams/fantasies (pun intended given the titles of many of them). I'd recommend starting with Magical Umbrella Girl where Angie is her storytelling wing-person & logistical support role: th-cam.com/video/B4XfPbRoE04/w-d-xo.html

I just watched a few shorts of Angie and Koga doing some vocal recordings for Kachi Kachi Yama. Sounds just fine to me :D

@@YoMota Yep, the hard work on improving her main area of weakness has appeared to pay off.
There's also a video from early in the pandemic era GachaTV, where hana tries to teach Koga how to do growls, tis suitably amusing: th-cam.com/video/REW05dh3mf8/w-d-xo.html

As someone who doesn't play any instruments at all, nor ever have. Gacharic Spin more than any other band I've come across, has made me appreciate music so much more. My brain is starting to learn how to pick out weird sounds and then try to identify where they came from and so on.
And a lot of the time those sounds seem to come from Tomo-Zo, which is one of the reasons why she's pretty much become my favorite guitar player. Not only is she incredibly fun, if not mesmerizing to watch in the songs where they keep the camera on her long enough, but just all these small little details.
Speaking of which, Magic Umbrella Girl has been mentioned, so I'll just throw in the two instrumentals. (Might be more out there but they escape me at the moment if so).
The first one is just "Instrumental 2018"
The second is "I want to take a walk"
Both of them are really good, although I personally prefer the first one if I had to pick one.

The actual song title for the 'Instrumental 2018' TH-cam vid is 'Nicorin-sei no Tsuukin Rush' aka 'Nicorin Star Commuter Rush'. Nicorin planet is where Tomo-zo's alien persona is originally from, so the concept of the song seems to be intergalactic rush hour traffic.

I Want To Take A Walk was one of the first songs I heard them do. Very good piece.
I always recommend listening with headphones. You will pick up all kinds of cool stuff.

the high level of musicianship in Japan stems directly from Japanese culture music is important to them and the way they prioritize musical education proves that ! over here in the US we have lost that to fraking sports, the only music we have here (mainstream) is cooperate fluff intended to make the fast buck

Most of the live video you will see is shot at the final show of a tour, so in a larger venue. They do play a lot of small places and do extensive tours in Japan - very hard working. There a ten minute compilation of footage from a 2014 show at a Hard Rock cafe in Pittsburgh - poor audio quality but it'll give you a feel for them working a small room. Make sure you see the 2016 live version of Hunting Summer first though, otherwise there will be spoilers.
If you're interested in checking out an underrated singing bass player, I'd recommend having a look at Mariusz Duda of the polish progressive rock band Riverside. Kinda distinctive vocal and bass styles, which are possibly more noticeable in his solo project, Lunatic Soul. I think you'll dig his work - no reaction required.

Seeing theme in a small venue would be incredible. Thank you for the suggestion!

The lyrics are the one part of this whole thing that I have not been able to take in. In my down time, I watch a lot of Japanese learning videos. It's a lot but I hope to one day be able to sit and truly understand these songs the way they were intended.

Hana is also an excellent bass player, both in slap and finger style. Watch her put down perfect bass lines in this band she was bassist for before she joined Gacharic Spin: th-cam.com/video/M_a-ALIUvis/w-d-xo.html The band is called The Spade13 and the song is Lala.

I had not idea she played bass. Wow, just soo multitalented. Hana is the most talented performer I have ever seen. She also plays piano. There is a TH-cam video of her performing live playing the piano and singing. I’ll try to find the link.
