BRILLIANT advice, especially about the kids growing, and passing them down to the next sibling.

The ankle length kilt/skirt you showed is mine Haha. I commissioned it from Welsh tartan and because they didnt have a listing for one that long they used mine for the photos. It's the Pugh tartan if anyone interested. It's the best piece of clothing own, I highly recommend commissioning something if your thinking about it

I love it! I was curious about longer kilt skirts, but ankle length skirts like I always wear are not 'in fashion' apparently.😅

I bought an "authentic Scottish kilt" on eBay. It turned out to be a kilted skirt from Hector Russell. Turned out to be a happy accident though because it fit my wife perfectly. She went from being adverse to highland wear to actually wearing it at a Scottish Festival and now wants to know about accessorizing it. :)

Great video! Another difference that I believe wasn't mentioned is the the women's kilt line with USA Kilts is not available in 16oz wool, so there are some tartans that can be ordered as a 5yd kilt but not as a women's garment.

There’s an old Scottish Gaelic saying…”There’s nothing bad under the plaid”. You will see for yourself when you see the kilt flap up in the wind. Not bad.

I'm moving to Scotland SOON and there's so much to learn! Never knew there were differences for the different genders in kilts, interesting.

I was always more comfortable in a “man’s” style kilt, possibly because when you grow up playing in pipe bands and highland dancing, that’s the only option. The art of making “mens-style” kilts tailored to fit women around the waist and hips is unfortunately a dying art, especially in heavyweight tartan (most tartan seems to fall ~12oz mark), but when done right there’s nothing quite like the swing and weight of 8 yards of 16oz tartan, either on the march or the dancing boards.

Been looking for a Ramsay Blue womans kilt (In the netherlands) for ages. I have 3 in other colors already. All short kilts because thats all I could find in womans. Seriously debating just to go for a mens instead as I have found those in the right color before. And I would actually love to have a longer one too. Found this video and others from you trying to figure out if I should.... answer pretty much became... yes.

I just bought a women's kilt today at the thrift store for $13.99. Looks just like a man's but opens on the left. Lable inside says The Kilt size 12. I will have to resell it because it's too small for my grandaughter.

When I was in high school in Memphis in the 60’s, girls often wore what sounds like mens’ kilts- very deep pleats, mid-knee length.

I always thought kilts for men and men only, I always assumed that women just wore pladied skirts which is Awesome.👌 👏

I just got a long women’s hostess skirt and a decorative kilt pin (the safety pin style, but the top looks like a thistle). What level do I place it? Knee, at the bottom, or does it actually matter?

So Kilts are like Shirts Opening on the Right for Men and The left for Women. So Kilts are Pleated. Well that was Educational I learned some Interesting Things about Kilts. I learned what they were Because of Scrooge McDuck, as He is Scottish. But he just Called it by name, And not much detail was given when Everyone was calling it a Skirt except for The Scottish Judge that Handled Scrooges Case. It's all in his Origin Story. So are Kilts also Irish wear?

As a rough guide, the tartan is the boldest part of the outfit. Everything else is fairly bland. A "teen/Yong woman" can wear a "mini" length with a t shirt in white or any matching colour.
A more "mature" or "formal" look is an above or below knee length pleated skirt. Outer top layer matching the darkest colour (usually blue or green field). If wearing 2 layers the plain white or highlight stripe colour t shirt or blouse largely covered by the darker outer layer.
      Accessories match the darker colour.
      Jewelry matches the lighter colour.
Alternatively match to the bright colours. But this leads to the bold red dress equivalent.

if if found a kilted skirt or women kilt cheap in a thrift store, and it fit, I'd get it anyway just because here in the states the general public wouldn't know the difference.😁
