The non-canon stuff added in the 1999 anime was some of the best I have seen. It was story relevant, and provided insight into the characters that adds to your emotions when you watch the 2011 version. Plus the 1999 version has an essential canon scene left out of the 2011 version -- Gon's introduction to Kite when Gon was 9 years old. Kite is the one who told him that his father was still alive and a hunter. While this scene was added as a short flashback somewhere around 2011's ep.78, without knowing from the very beginning how important Kite was to him, Gon's deep emotional motivation sort of fall flat during the later parts of the Chimera ant arc. Overall I prefer the 2011 version, but the 1999 has a lot that deepens the story. For example, in episode 24, you can actually feel Gon's humiliation, pain, and despair at his humiliation by Hisoka. (Actually Hisoka had been praising and aiding him, but that's not how Gon saw it.) With the 2011, all you get is, "I'm feeling down. I'll sit in this hollow tree for a whle." You just don't feel it. *In the 1999, though, his emotions are palpable.*
Well realistically true friends would argue about ideals and have personality conflicts once in a while but if they were to do so all the time or not even have one at all shows there's something wrong with you and you're not really friends.

I understand It’s an adaption and may not be faithful but the 1999 version touched on a level of realism that made the series unique, whether that be through a dark gritty tone, realistic character interactions or foreshadowing it made you care a lot more for the characters and the narrative.

Besides all the inner struggle that Killua is going through we also have to remember that Mito's sister was Gon's mother (in this version of the anime at least), and that she passed away during delivery. Imagine losing a sibling and then having a kid telling you that a life so close to death is hopeless and that is not worth saving. When she probably witnessed her passing. The words she says to Killua "For some people even the will to live isn't enough..." The writer of this scene has a way with these little nuances and the characters that even if the filler is non-canon, is still canon relevant in a way.
today it's 2017, watched this for the first time around 10 or 12 years ago and fell in love with it, watched the 2011 version six years ago and loved it right up till the chimera arc. but i still prefer the 1999 HxH over the 2011 for some reason and it aint nostalgia i guess because it has less gore and violence in it.

Looking back, I'm not sure if activating an animal's nen would actually save it if it's already bleeding out. I mean, the only reason Gon and Kil could control their nen so fast was cause of their potential. But even so, this is still one of my favorite filler episodes of any anime :P
