When you have paid $400+ for the Nespresso machine, who cares about 20c per cup. I would rather be guaranteed quality every time. I agree that the crema looks better on the Nespresso cup.
The HiLine coffee capsules have plastic and the Nespresso has aluminum. This is a huge difference and the Nespresso machine knows it! I have experienced inconsistent brewing with the HiLine coffee capsules. I did an experiment and found that 25% of the time, the HiLine capsules did not brew. 25% of the time, they just dripped from the machine. The other 50% of the time, they brewed a mediocre cup of espresso. In my experiment, I concluded that the capsules cost the same amount of money since 50% of the time, the capsules were duds. Taste is an individual thing and hard to compare by an experiment. However, I found that the Nespresso pods brewed a delightful cup of rich espresso. I was not happy with the end results of the HiLine pods. I will not purchase them again.
jayne strahm I’ve had this same experience with every other brand of capsules that are not Nespresso. No matter what anyone says, the quality was never the same
@Tony Tsui I must be over packing mine because it works every other time with the reusable capsule.I am using a Bodum burr grinder on the espresso setting too.
never use any plastic capsule bu every i try from other companies like from l'or - illy - starbucks etc never ever had one problem (they were all aluminium capsules)
I love the dramatic music in the beginning. Thank you for the review though, I've been considering trying the hi line, but haven't taken the plunge yet.
Nespresso has a good recycling program for their pods. That alone is worth double all the others. Add consistent flavor and quality means Nespresso is a superior product far beyond its nominal cost difference.
Ok, the presented capsule are not oxygene thight and not aroma protected, which means that after few deys from packging the coffee is oxydated. Aroma is gone and coffee gets bad. The "plastic" is PP, which is absolutely NOT an oxygene barrier. Aluminium is a perfect oxygene barrier. There is a capital difference in quality.
My Citiz Expresso machine get clog up or did not brew using Highland coffee. I don't use Highland pod anymore . I fear that my machine will be damage .
I really wanted to find an alternative to the traditional Nespresso capsules. I'm no huge fan of Nestle and $0.65+ per capsule is a little steep given what it could be selling for. Enter HiLine - a slightly less expensive alternative (~$0.50 per capsule) and I liked the idea of supporting a local more independent coffee supplier. Here's the problem. Yes, the capsules WORK with any Nespresso machine. But they are not ideally made for the machines. From watered down pours that are undrinkable, to varying degrees of consistency with each HiLine capsule, I experienced successful pours on average from only 8 out of 10 capsules. At that rate, you've already lost the price edge HiLine has on Nespresso. I also have questions about whether or not the capsules were doing harm to my machine. Almost every capsule wound up being stuck in the slot without being dropped properly into the disposal tray. I also found that the liquid disposal tray was filling up at a much more rapid pace than when I used the Nespresso capsules. Hopefully HiLine can find a way to manufacture capsules with the exact specifications and materials of the Nespresso capsules, because I would really like to support them. But until then, capsule reliability, quality, and even cost efficiency is in Nespresso's favor for the time being.
This is great question. And it's open for debate. But if you have a car and replace oil with non-branded oil do you void your warranty? So bottom line is if you do proper maintenance and use machine properly you should be OK. Hope this helps. Enjoy your cup, Aromacup.com!
Thanks for the great review. Big fan here.. Just wanted to ask if you have tried the HL in the Nespresso U, because I know a very similar compatible capsule that is not to be use with U, ( unlike old models, U's puncture needle is made of plastic) Thanks~
Thanks for the video Brian. I thought it worth mentioning that here in the UK we can recycle the aluminium capsules but not the plastic ones, which end up in landfill. Something to consider if resource use bothers you.
I find that irrespective of the taste, it is very difficult to close my Nespresso machine's lever to make a HiLine cup of coffee as it's made from hard plastic instead of the soft foil that Nespresso capsules are made of. I would like a guarantee from HiLine that it won't damage my Nespresso machine's lever in the long run?
Hi Line doesn't taste even close to Nespresso, lacks the long lasting crema and body. The plastic pods are more rigid then the aluminium and have been known to damage the machines sometimes. Is it worth it? IMHO, life's too short to drink mediocre coffee.
This is older review. HiLine capsules typically come in at 60 cents per capsule vs 70 to 75 cents for nespersso capsules and when I compared HiLine (Wall st) to nespresso (Ristretto). I felt there was a big difference. The HiLine was weaker in taste and the crema was much thinner. In fact I could see the difference as the espresso coming out the machine. The color got very light half way through pull. Basically it tastes watered down. Maybe the Quality has changed since this review.
I have had problems with these capsules in my Citiz. The capsules won't puncture, the water pours out the side and when you open the machine the capsule bursts out the side and gets grounds all over the inside. I have used a lot of these capsules, even had them send me replacements with the same problem. Not sure how much money you're saving when you're having blow outs. I also don't think they are as good as Nespresso...I use my moka pot now, I just can't afford the Nespresso at the rate of espresso I drink and I haven't found a decent "compatible" capsule.
Hey, J Jarry - the new capsules are supposed to have fixed that problem with needing to make your own holes. They still leak water before the capsule 'pops' and the espresso flows out. I'm using a Citiz and it's just not working for me. They have excellent customer service.
i have magmix citiz and the krups U the pod do flow some water before the pop on the U but that was not a problem on citiz. we are using new pods from fine coffee club now what working out much better for me they have house blend. at $0.30 per capsule.
Any thoughts re the leaching of dangerous chemicals (ie synthetic estrogens) from the plastic pods? Dunno if I'm being paranoid but that's a compressed charge of extremely hot water going thru those pods. Leaching is inevitable from each and every pod charge. BPA-free plastics are not free of these chemicals, btw.
I think is a great idea in terms of costs, but you need to provide the same quality in the coffee and the capsules itself. If you are saving because the the capsule material itself is different (aluminum vs plastic) and this material could be toxic or harmful for you, it is not a smart saving. I do drink lots of coffee and spend a lot on nespresso capsules, so I decided to try a similar compatible brand to save money. The coffee taste good, however after I used them it just came to my mind that this plastic with the hot water is not really a good idea. I just did not feel comfortable with the plastic cup leaking in the hot water into my coffee. So I went back to my nesspresso. There must be a really good reason why they chose aluminum in the first place. They could of use plastic and make more money.....
Present forever This is something about which I was curious. I would assume that the Hiline capsules, made of plastic, could pose a health hazard that would not exist with the aluminum Nespresso capsules. Is this not correct?
Present forever The Hiline website gives a capsule description meant to reassure. Yet, I am not sufficiently informed to know whether this description tells the whole story or only part of it. Following is the capsule description from the Web site...The capsule is made from food grade polypropylene and is safe for food products. We manufacture the capsules in an FDA approved environment. Our capsules do NOT contain BPA, phthalates or any toxic halogens.
+Gary Birnberg Yes, but Aluminum has its problem. I guess. the user her has to chose between Cancer and Alzheimer. Which one is less harmful? here is the question :)
+Gary Birnberg The aluminum pods is the reason that kept me from buying Nespresso. Here is a situation where aluminum get in touch with hot water. Aluminum, as you know, has old reputation with that mental problem.
+Elie Balas Well this may be a sponsored video anyway, meaning they provide them pods to "review" If Im wrong my apologies. People do have different tastes.
How come you see the crema of a HiLine cofee equal to the nespresso one ? It doesn't seem clear on this video, I personnaly see Nespresso's crema as more regular and dense.
Plus it is kinda stupid, to say the least, when you're trying to show two cups side by side to highlight the difference but then cover up the cups with labels! Are you seriously trying to show us the difference or make us go with your "conclusion"?
I've tried them all. Not even close to the same quality as Nespresso caps. First off, they don't puncture properly causing less water to flow through giving you a smaller serving of espresso. The taste itself is also not very premium. More than likely some generic brand of coffee. The size of the capsule is also not 100% the same. The HiLine caps are slightly larger than the Nespresso one. I struggled to fit them into my Nespresso Capsule holder. Definitely won't recommend it, irrespective of the cost saving.
Yes exactly. Th puncture factor on Hiline is concerning. Some bottoms are different plastic I noticed. This makes ahuge difference in my Breville. Water flows for the first 5 secs making rhe flavor unbalanced.
plus 20% vat[sales tax] same price difference being in uk when you come home your house has been broken into and its been stolen, and cops will be over in 3 days to do a report and accomplish nothing
At 1:46 nice blur to not see how the sealing looks like in a substitute. That seal in HLine is a plastic one. The truth is that original pods has a silicone seal that is patented, still in 2020, and that is why other brands may leak and they do leak from time to time because you have plastic to plastic contact. About the taste...hmm.. I've tested almost all of nespresso and the difference is big. tested Belmio , Rene, Kimbi. None of the substutes did taste as good as original ones, I may take a blind guess that these Hi line will be similar
Sadly this fellow doesn't know what he's talking about. There are far more differences between the Nespresso capsules and the HiLine capsules. Nespresso capsules are hermetically sealed, which means no light, air or moisture can get into the capsules, ensuring that they stay fresh for well over a year after you purchase them. Nespresso only sources the top 1% of gourmet coffee in the world, so I'm sorry HiLine coffee does not taste the same. Nespresso's capsules are fully recyclable and they will do that for you, if you give your capsules back to them. Plastic capsules can be a little more dangerous to consume when using heat with them, and besides that, these capsules are not guaranteed to withstand the immense heat and pressure of the Nespresso machines. And if people are concerned with Nespresso capsules being made of aluminum, they use a food-grade coating on the inside of the capsules so the coffee doesn't come into contact with the aluminum. Nespresso definitely has the upper hand here. It's a luxury product and I'm sorry, but you do pay a little more for quality.
Thanks for the info! :) Do you know what the food grade coating is? -The nespresso pods don't have a paper filter like the K-pods; right? -Trying to find answers to my questions.. but having difficulties :/
Hiline coffee sucks. Yes it tastes good, but it ruined my coffee machine. I emailed them and they admitted to sending me defective capsules. They lack quality control and quality in general. In Germany we can now buy high-quality Nespresso-compatible capsules for the equivalent of just 26 US$ cents at Lidl (an Aldi competitor).

Well said.
luke_2700k I paid $65 for my nespresso machine via a Williams Sonoma sale.
luke_2700k It did stay longer with the Nespresso brand.
What kind of coffee is suitable for reffiling a nesspreso capsule, can you sugest or do a video about it ? Thanks

Coffee Capsule Technology Channel Agree. Plastic leaches.
The Red glove is hilarious!
Lol, I have always find the gloves a funny addition. They seem like magician gloves!
You can turn in the Nespresso capsules for recycling, can you do the same with HiLine?
Thanks, I'll look into the the different coffees available through HiLine :)
My Citiz Expresso machine get clog up or did not brew using Highland coffee. I don't use Highland pod anymore . I fear that my machine will be damage .
is the plastic safe ? no BPA ?
I just tried hi line coffee it was awesome can't wait try the other variety s
Great! We always use PP nespresso compatibe cups with aluminium lids......
Thanks for the review. The only way we know if we try it. I will order and find out. Thanks again.

why is Spiderman putting the capsule boxes in to shot?
Will using these invalidate the Nespresso warranty? Thanks!
would these capsules damage the Nespresso machines in the long run?, specially for the fragile Lattissimo unit displayed in this video
He always talk about how the machines and capsules works, rarely about how the coffee it makes taste.
This is great question. And it's open for debate. But if you have a car and replace oil with non-branded oil do you void your warranty? So bottom line is if you do proper maintenance and use machine properly you should be OK. Hope this helps. Enjoy your cup, Aromacup.com!

A review of the Espresso Toscano compatible capsules would also be great.

You probably shouldn't use them if they put stress on the machine.
I find with some plastic one they do not open like they are meant to.
I purchased HiLine and the plastic cups do not puncture properly. This does not allow the coffee to flow through. The Nespresso ones work fine.
+SUSAN MESSER I have the exact same issue.
Unfortunately not in US :( Enjoy your cup, Aromacup.com
Hopefully in the 4 years since this video you have educated yourself about Sustainability of Nespresso.
He has deadpool helping display the coffee, that explains the red gloves
you can buy nespresso compatible pods in any supermarket in there cheaply
Useful info, thanks...that glove...

Great question. We did contacted Hiline and they confirmed that it will work with Nespresso U. Enjoy your cup, Aromacup.com.
great review definitely going to try these

theses machines extract coffee using hot water through the pods

HUSTLE BUTTER - sorry, but I disagree. The coffee quality was quite good, and the pricing is very good too. Taste is subjective!
Is it ok to use real Nespresso capsule with compatible machine?
0:15, the crema from hiline is weaker. Btw, the red glove is hilarious
It is weaker and already starting to deflate when they cut away.
