7:21 Tesla needs every single battery cell they can get their hands on. They will continue to partner with Panasonic, and buy cells from CATL and others, as WELL as build their own 4680's well into the future. They will not replace suppliers, but supplement them.

I think when it comes to the size, the factory this video has a mistake. The new expansion plan seems to be considerably smaller than the original. Although the new plan and the old plan was a clipped corner rectangle, the new plan is thinner and does is not as wide, and clearly shown in the new Tesla video. At 2:06 of the video Shows that they’re just completing the factory at the existing width but at 6:02 the image Shows the original plan and the red line area shows the widening of the building, which is not happening. Still a big building, but smaller than the original plan.

these semis will really be good for shorter trips and some longer trips over 500 miles

Winds and cold weather can shorten the range. Changes en route could lengthen a trip. Do not think these trucks will be scheduled for nominal mileage over 300 miles per day. That still covers say 70% of trips. So they can sell a lot of trucks before having to increase the range.

7:55 Tesla isn't going with 2170's in the Semi because they're hobbled by a 2017 design. That's not at all how Tesla operates. It's because right now, the 4680's aren't in nearly high enough supply to use them in the Semi, which needs 8-9x more batteries than a Model S Plaid does. Better to reserve them for Model Y's right now as you can make far more cars with them. The 2170's aren't supply constrained, so they go into the Semi (and other cars).

Two questions about the Tesla Semi, what's will their range be? How long to recharge / infrastructure? No doubt they will require enormous power consumption/ charging stations.
Ok, a third question...will he power grid be able to sustain these power needs? I can't imagine that long haul trucking will want to have their trucks sitting idle for hours at a time waiting to recharge.
This is uncharted waters.

As a retired UPSer, I can tell you this covers nearly every bid job we have in our dispatch. These semis currently can not handle OTR. Still, one hell of a start.
500 mile range and being as a diesel cost $1 per mile for fuel and an electric semi will cost about .40$ per mile, your ahead $350.00. Probably worth the hour it would take to recharge.
I am looking forward to no longer smelling burning brakes in the mountains of Montana and worrying about them going out of control.
I remember following a Semi going down the hill to Grand Coullee Dam, and the brakes were smoking for about 10 miles, because of the long long downhill grade. I was surprised that the Semi kept driving. Really, electric semi trucks for delivery vehicles, makes a lot of sense. For example concrete trucks drive to a jobsite for 1 hour, then return to the local concrete factory. It would be very, very easy for a concrete company to charge their trucks at home base while they are being serviced and filled with fresh concrete mix, because a lot of their drives are likely less than 100 miles roundtrip.

He should build his factorys at old abandoned mines so he can build them faster and fix past environmental damage helping ecosystems.
Or reduce the size of his parking lots by 50% or more go up parking garages.
costs to not utilize cheap land ready for development over an abandoned mine that was abandoned for a reason will be incredibly expensive and not make much sense in the business world. Also, reducing land space for ever expensive parking structures doesn't make sense for the location of this specific area of manufacturing and job creation.

If he’s planning on using those giga-presses for the semi’s, he had better have them on order now and expecting delivery later this year in order to meet 50K units in 2024. Otherwise, it will be another Elon-time-line deadline that is missed entirely.

You should make the trailers also with solar panels on the sides and top. That would be a big moneymaker. Imagine the battery size you can put underneath the trailer
That would reduce payload. Current version is fine for most uses in the US.
@@brendykes1202 Completely agree but they could put swapable battery pack in a trailer and put less battery in the truck. The truck might end up being way to light to control the weight he's pulling or braking/slowing down. The truck would be only seats, tires and electric motors, lol . Imaging the truck running for 5 hours, and a countless battery pack being charged during that time. But what do we know 🙂
That idea is all fine and dandy but you have to take weight into consideration... The current conventional tractor trailer combined weighs about 33000 pounds if you build something as you speak Your combined empty weight may end up being about 45000 or more... But your idea is definitely worth noting... Personally I think they should scale the tractor trailer down in size by 10 or 15%.. Especially for city work...

The Tesla Semi is going to drive and pay for the rollout of thousands and thousands of charging stations. Tesla will use their megapacks and the Tesla Solar to capture FREE sun energy and store it in those megapacks and then sell it on to the Semi truck drivers who need a lot of juice daily plus the millions of EV drivers, this is going to be a massive business, free energy from the Sun and sold as close to pure profit every day, and to clinch the Semi truck market they can sell cheaper long term contracts of juice to the trucking companies.
Yes and the freight companies has big buildings whitch they can PV install and an megapack to get free energy for the trucks. This is something you can do on every place the building stand. Boring for your own oil and chance it to diesel is in the moist place of the earth no good business.

Until they can fully charge in under a half n hour it's dead on arrival. Truckers, and trucking companies make $ by being on the road. Parking said truck for a couple hours to fill up is unfeasible. Just more musk vaporware
@@joshlewis575 Takes 30 minutes with the chargers at the Lye depot, not sure what it takes on the road, but lets be honest, if you drive 400-500 miles you are due a break and at 60mp that is already a long day and you want food and a rest even a sleep, so charging for an hour while you eat or rest is nothing
As a old school long haul truckers, I so want a couple of these semi s. With one of them being for a new design of RV that will have features never before thought possible in a RV of any kind. Some thing I am willing to trade to Mr. Musk for a trade. the afore mentioned Semi s and a couple humanoid Robots. The feature I'm speaking of is wanted by every long haul trucker out there trust me.
Mr Musk has every intention of relieving humans from driving duties with fully self driving trucks.
He should make a contractors van with same front of simi to save money and get to market faster. Contractors need tall cargo space for tools and ladders just not as long as simi

Onwards and upwards. Elon's tendency to spit out milestone deadlines that are rarely met is legendary. But at the end of the day, he still under-promises and over-delivers on almost everything. All kudos to the TESLA teams and just WOW! You guys are magicians.
The Tesla semi having AI driving will have a massive positive impact on the economy. Main reason why is because it will save so much time needed to drive from one location to the next. The semi will be able to continue the journey while the driver is able to sleep during the night. So instead of 5-8 hours of time lost for necessary sleep the goods will be able to be delivered that much sooner.
I think we are just like the drug addicts: I hate the robots taking over, yet I love the progress made possible by automation. It's fantastic to be part of it, but I'm kinda glad I'm about to retire without having to compete against robots in queue for my job. And if robots will take over what we do, how do the young o es ever learn it? And if they can never learn it, will the mankind become dumb from now on? It's sad how many young people lose their lives because of stupid mistakes while driving; but if we as mankind lose the possibility to make mistakes, we'll become stupid, plus obsolete, and will have too much time to do mischief. How did the Romans said it? Woe, woe and triple woe?!
Have to remember that with a range of 500 miles you won't get much sleep as you will have to stop and recharge in 5-7 hours. Unless you have a series of stations where you swap tractors that are already charged.
Actually do your research on how long it's gonna take to recharge one of these vehicles and there short range and as far as the economy not so much as this will kill the trucking industry that's 8 million blue collar jobs Jeopardy.

The terror I can see is that once the bots are better than us, it will make no sense to learn things practical for future job, because there'll be none. And our kids will just dumb down at the exponential speed. No need to learn driving - that will be an obsolete skill soon. No need to learn computers - all of that will be better handled by robots. Not a nice perspective. I am lucky because I'm just about to retire. But that uneasy feeling, while being amazed and fascinated by the bots...

Lithium is available all over the world. It just needs to be mined and refined by other than just the Chinese.

@@jameswing4343 I think you’ve confused lithium & cobalt, as well as 4680 & LFP. 4680 uses lithium.
There is no nickel or cobalt in LFP.
We will never run out of lithium. It's basically everywhere and can be recycled indefinitely.

I'm totally on board with the Tesla commercial trucks as a commercial driver for 18 years it would be nice to not have to go to a stinky fuel stop... They should seriously consider making these commercial chargeing stations conducive to a 10 hour break... Pull in shut down plug in and go to bed...

So, semi will really start production in -26. Got it.
Tesla is too agile and forward-thinking to have defaulted to their original plans for convenience, as it would have required a redesign regardless. Additionally, changing production lines is costly, especially indown time. Tesla's not that stupid.
Therefore the 4680 production issues is the reason Tesla started semi production with the older battery type as they wanted to get the semis into production as quickly as possible.

We do kot need to replace all diesel and gas powered cars to save the environment. To save the planet the rest of the world has to care as much as us.
Much is made about fully autonomous vehicles and they are a great goal to work toward but for true autonomy to be realized all vehicles are going to have to be autonomous. As it stands at the moment the one thing that AI cant do is predict the human mind.
It cant reliable predict what a human is going to do in any given situation and I dont see that changing any time soon.
With that in mind, for autonomous vehicles to work with any form of real safety they must all be autonomous on the basis that a computer cant think for itself and is therefore predictable. Once at that point the only point of failure will be mechanical or electronic.
