Thank you for your videos. Using your info, i did my whole home renovation by myself, for the first time because i am a rookie in drywall. Never done it before but it looks awesome, i have to say, thanks to all your info and tips. You have the best educational videos in this regard. So thank you and i send you my best wishes. Greetings from the Netherlands (europe).
Thank you for making these videos you have helped me tremendously in my confidence to do drywall. We had to remodel half of my son's house due to tub leak and carpenter ants. The only thing I have never done was spreading mud, but thanks to you showing and teaching I put my big boy pants on and went at it. Now it did come out okay, nowhere near professional, and I found it kinda fun after learning your tips an tricks. I cannot thank you enough!!!
Thanks, so glad I can help. Right now I put these out in my spare time after working 50 or 60 hours a week and I can’t wait until I can put these out full-time as I have hundreds of ideas and tips to pass on. But my channel has a ways to go before I can afford to do this full-time. But it’s growing nicely.
Hey everyone, it’s Guy, and I want to let you know that you should feel free to ask me questions here in the comments. I try to answer all questions. Thanks for being part of our community.
I have a good trick for butt joints. Go up the middle first heavy on the hollow side. Then go up the sides, but flatten the middle first before feathering both sides. Makes very flat looking joints & it’s much quicker. Took me awhile, 20 years to figure out a more efficient technique.
Hank864, you're very welcome. That's what I'm here for is to help non journeymen learn how to better tackle these projects with the knowledge passed on from myself, a 35 year drywall pro who is highly rated on the internet.
Good thing I stopped when I did!!!! I want to sand it more but my skim coat or final more or less will float out right. They really botched the butt joints when hanging. Only needs to be good enough so I have to remember that when I slap this final coat on. Texture to hide away any other blemishes per owners words! Okie dokie! Thanx again Guy!!!!
After coating the butt joint. Will the tape line be complete flat or could there be some small imperfections along the linear tape line that are acceptable. For example If I check the flatness of the tape line with a 12 inch knife all the way down will it be completely flat or could there be a few imperfections after coating. Imperfections such as recess or humps in spots of the tape? I'm trying to understand how perfect the joint needs to be if perfect is even possible. I do understand that we are trying to make a gradual hump but trying to understand how perfect and uniform the butt needs to be.
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement you are putting out some of the best content for DIY. Thank You for that. For your butt joint or any kind of wide joint (1/4 to 3/8) do you pre-fill flat, let dry, then tape? I watched a video where the guy filled all the seams and let dry prior to taping, but that seemed counter to the reason to tape. I have a small project, a friend advised I cut a groove between all butt joints then fill / tape (mesh). On the first section that worked, but I did have to work to get rid of the trough caused by the groove. Should I pre-fill dry. Then tape? Using 45min hot mud. Thanks.
Wayne, I did new drywall for 15 years and ran all the high end drywall finishing tools like Bazookas, mud boxes, etc. And since then I've got another 15-20 in repairs and small jobs, and most ALL pros I've seen, including me, only prefill cracks wider than 1/8". There's always mud on the backside of the tape when done right, so that will fill in the small gaps. And the best way to prefill is either durabond, or Fast setting Joint compound, aka hot mud. Then you don't have to let it dry. Just fill it tight, with no hump, and once it sets up, tape it. And I NEVER create a wider crack when there was none. To me that's dumb. If we really 'needed' cracks between all the rock, we'd hang it with shims between every sheet and NO ONE does that. So save your time and energy, as that's a novice move. I actually experimented with that and came to the conclusion that it's pointless about 20 years ago. Oh, and I would never prefill recessed seams. That is pointless too. Tape it, let it dry, coat 2-3 times and you're done. You CAN wipe the tape down and then lightly prefill, but you are supposed to tape it, and LET IT DRY BEFORE putting on another coat. Says so right on most mud boxes and Joint compound websites. Thanks for the question, and if you appreciate our help and want to show your support for our channel, you can do so in numerous ways. Thanks. It is the fast way for me, although it will take you guys some practice, but at least you have the right guidelines and know how it should look going on. Hope you subscribed and feel free to share my videos or put them in your playlists.
The basic rule is that the higher the hump is the wider you have to float it but most anything can be made to disappear. Same, I took down a partition wall and joined up a new sheet of drywall to an old inside corner...I'm learning the hard way this was a huge mistake because that old inside corner is obviously tapered down when it was taped back in 1968. Should I just sand that old inside corner smooth and try the butt joint again? I've got a huge speed bump going where you do not want to see it (it's a ceiling above a new shower where we will put in floor to ceiling wall tile).

I’ll be doing a new version of taping soon but here’s my old one. Taping drywall joints with Paper Tape, Mesh Tape, and a NEW product that I LOVE th-cam.com/video/nthTJbWxI_s/w-d-xo.html
I only skim coat walls if I'm trying to cover up an old texture before leaving smooth or applying a new one. At least that's the most common reason. For new drywall, never. Thanks for the question.
Good evening, I have a quick question about a butt joint. I recently did a repair in my home and everything looked and felt very smooth. But once i started repainting the wall i could see exactly where the mud/new drywall ended and where the old wall started. It seemed like the new drywall and mud took the paint differently than the old wall.. any idea what i did wrong?
That sounds like flashing, which is where the new paint has a slight different sheen than the old due to the porosity of the new work. To avoid this, you have to first prime the new repair, then spot paint just the repair, extending out slightly, then repaint a larger area. If it's flat, you can often just spot paint, but anything glossier will only blend if you repaint to the next paint break, like a corner. I made this mistake a number of times, so I learned the hard way. Oh, and if this is smooth finish, it may be the difference in how smooth it is. If it's texture that doesn't apply.
Sand only to shape it to the rough shape needed and to remove the high points. Never sand into the joint tape. Watch the video from the point in this link and try to sand to that shape without damaging the joint tape, or the raw drywall. th-cam.com/video/wqM5Y8RoLiU/w-d-xo.html
The mud I use the most is called +3 by USG. Sometimes it’s not available in all areas so if not, look for a light weight all purpose and it will probably be similar. Thanks, Guy
Cool, thanks for providing that link. Always good to hear other guys ways of doing things. It all comes down to getting the hump curve spread out gradually, so the shadows, and lighting doesn't give it away. Thanks again, Guy
Nice. I do electrical now but find myself often at flips with the flippers taping walls with 2" "putty" knives, spatulas, you name it. I can't help myself since it makes me cringe to see that wasted effort. I usually stop, goto my truck and find my latest new 6" at least and show them some basics and let them know while waiting for the "all purpose" mud to dry please do themselves a favor and go buy a 8/10 knife at least and a decent hand sander instead of them sanding foam blocks so many seem to be bugeyed attracted to like it's a white light in the night. By the time I'm plating the boxes it's time to give them 15 more minutes of training. I'd get a C9 but I got tired of the dust.
It's funny how novices are attracted to 3 things like the bugs to a light, narrow mud knives, green label all purpose and nothing else, and sanding sponges. And then it's perpetuated on youtube by many of the handymen teaching drywall. Which is why I decided to teach people how to "Do it Right". Thanks for the comment.
I've watched professional finish drywall with two coats and they don't even sand it. After they were finished and it was painted I could even find the seam.
+Eddie Omahony Well I get asked all the time if I’m Scottish, and no that’s not it. My wife and I are actually nudists and I was trying to figure out a clothing item that was the closest to not wearing anything and a kilt came to mind. I no longer have to deal with the nutcracker feeling and it’s so freeing. I now wear them about 90% of the time now and have been for about four years and I love them. Now, jeans and shorts seem extremely restrictive so I’m hooked on kilts. Hope that answers your question, and thanks for stopping by and being part of the Kilted Guy Drywall School community
You should really watch this video since you used mesh tape and all purpose. ❌ Drywall Mesh Tape FAILURE! ❌ This REALLY happened to me, a 30 YR Pro. Find out why
Think I missed it but... I was thinking a "butt joint" is where 2 drywall sheets butt together. A carpentry term... But in this a "butt joint" is where the 2 sheets stick out, like a butt 🤦♂️🤣.. Lordy lordy..
There’s many ways to do this actually and the main thing is the end result. But wait until you see the video I release Saturday morning as it will greatly simplify this. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon and you’ll see it.
Beautiful job , it takes years to get it that good, that easy . I use my 10” box , coat each side of tape , wide open , run one down the centre , then 3 passes , I’m sure you’ve run into some nasty ones , landing on the wall where the sun runs in like a 500 watt halogen, those are fun to stretch out
Well, IF this was a recessed joint, you would be right. But this is a Butt joint, and a butt joint most often goes over a flat wall, with no recess. And when you tape it, that creates a hump that will NEVER go away. You can't put a piece of joint tape on a joint, on a flat wall, then coat it, and not have a hump. That's why we have to float it out so wide. Hope that helps clear up any confusion for everyone. Thanks for stopping by.

Short and sweet. Perfect.
Was wondering why you didnt do the final step of finishing / texturing the the whole wall ?

Looks so easy on a 5 foot wall without ladders to move around! I wish mine were 5 feet instead of 9 feet!
I have the advantage of reaching an 8' ceiling from the floor, or walking on stilts to do ceilings. I'm 6' 2" tall.
I prefer hawk and trowel for finishing work.
I like the way you did it
Thanks. It is the fast way for me, although it will take you guys some practice, but at least you have the right guidelines and know how it should look going on. Hope you subscribed and feel free to share my videos or put them in your playlists.
Have you ever tried doing this? If so, how did it come out? And was that before you watched my video?
My butt joint is a humgous speed bump. How can I save it? Should I sand the middle section flat? I don't think I flattened the middle hard enough.
The basic rule is that the higher the hump is the wider you have to float it but most anything can be made to disappear. I would start by sanding it down until the tape is just starting to show through and go from there. If you would like to send me pics, and discuss this further, you can do so by joining my patreon page at the $10 and up level. www.patreon.com/thatkiltedguy

Hey Guy, do you do any prefill anything like butt joints or seams ahead of taping? Thanks again!
Yeah, if there's any cracks wider than about 1/16" or more, I do prefill with hot mud.
Do you have a video where you actually put the paper tape on?
I’ll be doing a new version of taping soon but here’s my old one. Taping drywall joints with Paper Tape, Mesh Tape, and a NEW product that I LOVE th-cam.com/video/nthTJbWxI_s/w-d-xo.html
Yes alot of practice ...im a barber so it reminds me of doing a fade.
That's a good analogy, lol
Thanks for the video once again!
You're welcome!
If the wall is going to be textured, do you do a skin coat?
I only skim coat walls if I'm trying to cover up an old texture before leaving smooth or applying a new one. At least that's the most common reason. For new drywall, never. Thanks for the question.
Good evening, I have a quick question about a butt joint. I recently did a repair in my home and everything looked and felt very smooth. That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement thank you so much for the information!
How much sanding should I do on butt joints.
What mud do you use?
The mud I use the most is called +3 by USG. Sometimes it’s not available in all areas so if not, look for a light weight all purpose and it will probably be similar. Thanks, Guy
I am still withyou thanks
12” knife both sides if joints rock, wipe down with 24” knife no edges. If doesn’t rock pull it single 12” knife with 2 coats works good!
Never heard of a 24" knife. Can you point us to where we can see that?

I now wear them about 90% of the time now and have been for about four years and I love them. Now, jeans and shorts seem extremely restrictive so I’m hooked on kilts. Hope that answers your question, and thanks for stopping by and being part of the Kilted Guy Drywall School community
That Kilted Guy DIY Home Improvement it has to be asked, but commando?
Just subbed I'm experimenting with a few diff muds myself. Like used basic all purpose joint compound with mesh on ceiling crack well see what happens
He does it different than the Vancouver guy
There’s many ways to do this actually and the main thing is the end result. But wait until you see the video I release Saturday morning as it will greatly simplify this. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon and you’ll see it.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Ok, I'm subscribing. Keep the vids coming, thanks
Will do, thanks
Beautiful job , it takes years to get it that good, that easy . I use my 10” box , coat each side of tape , wide open , run one down the centre , then 3 passes , I’m sure you’ve run into some nasty ones , landing on the wall where the sun runs in like a 500 watt halogen, those are fun to stretch out
its like driving a car no 2 people do it exactly same
1st time i tried a butt joint...
My ass was super stoned
Lmnao
Actually it should not be humped after the first coat.
