there IS a river down below, it is the mt Baldy River. A combination of Icehouse Canyon, Bear Creel and San Antonio falls. They join and go to the dam below. There is a old GOLD MINE right where you pointed the camera. It is the Red White and Blue. It is under a grove or berries now but years back, I cut into the mine and went in, video on my channel. It has a dam at the mouth for some reason and the broke into a spring, so the water is present and your wading most of the mine. Down below the drop off, there's a large pipe that also carries water to an old building below. Robinson has photos in his books of the generator house using that water to make power. There a old way station just upriver and an old abandoned boy scout camp with an alter for Sunday Mass. A ruby mine right there and above that on the east wall, a Lapis AZUL MINE. There's only THREE places on earth they have found this gem, Africa, Afghanistan and right here in my back yard MT Baldy. There's so much history here you'll need a dozen videos or more. I wish Id known you were in the area. I could show you things in no book, tell you stories you'll be shocked and buy you a beer at the lodge. I was bitten by a rattler two times, one recently and one at the lodge, both times, no effect but the one at the lodge, when I said I was fine, don't call 911, the waitresses nick named me dead man walking. Everything from murders in the village, to mines, I have much to share with you m y friend. There also a house near by the opening that was build by a German man way back who built a house like the one he grew up in in Germany. It looks like a gingerbread house. Its on the way to the Lapis Azul mine
Hey, Pharraoh! Thank you so much for this detailed comment! Believe it or not, that was my first time up in that area. Yes, I recently found out about the Red White and Blue Mine. The algorithm served up some guy’s really nice video of it. I’ll have to go look at your video of it on your channel if I haven’t already. I was pretty impressed at how extensive that mine was inside. I figured there was a river down there because I could hear it. However, as I was leaving the area, I drove past the dam that’s at the mouth of the canyon but did not see any water. Everything seemed to be dry! Maybe I wasn’t in a position to see the water from the road as I sped by in my car. I saw the crowded parking area at the bottom of the road where there is a ranger station and stuff like that, but I didn’t see any river. Between the old Boy Scout camp and the power waystation, it sounds like there’s a lot more to see up there. That’s pretty cool that there are only three mines on earth where lapis lazuli is mined. Never knew that. Yes, you have to watch out for those rattlesnakes! That’s pretty amazing that you’ve been bitten twice but suffered no ill effects. Must’ve been dry bites. I’ve heard that rattlesnakes do that sometimes. Next time I’m up that way, I’ll have to let you know and we’ll have to meet up. I’ve always wanted to do a collaboration video with you anyway. Let’s make it happen!
The bugs are water striders! Cool to see them in there. Apparently they can give a pretty unpleasant bite but as a kid I used to pick them up while swimming in streams or ponds and never got bit.
The graffiti is pretty awesome, right? As I mentioned in the video, if you come back a couple months later most of that graffiti will have changed and been replaced by newer images. It’s like a never-ending art show!
You really should turn one of these explorations into a horror short. The way your voice is, it's perfect for one of your deadpan deliveries, violently interrupted by a surprise attack of some sort. You could use swish pans, or whatever you call them, during an attack, adding in some altered frames in After Effects or something, showing some nondescript 'thing' attacking you or whatever. Your voice somehow creates this sort of suspenseful vibe. A couple times, you've done something scary in your mine vids and it really works.
An interesting change of pace! It reminds me a little of that fascinating well/spring you covered a while back that stood above the roadside and in the past had hosted fish. The overlapping graffiti does deceive the eye though. On a couple of occasions I could swear there were someone stood just outside the beam of your torch, with the light catching bright spots on their clothing. However I am _pretty_ sure it was just the many layers of paint causing the effect! _Pretty_ sure...
Thanks for checking out the video and for taking the time to write a comment! Once in awhile it’s nice to go exploring and film an unusual place instead of an abandoned mine. This place with its recent tragic past seemed like a good one for Halloween.
wow that art was fantastic. well worth the trip out i imagine. such a cool spot with an unfortunate piece of history. thank you for your continued content!
I lived about a 25 minute drive from here when I was a kid. I loved the mountains because of this area. Kinda sad to see this spot being known for this now. That ledge is when long tripods or selfie sticks are great. I have a fear of heights, but I like still taking photos of them.
I hear you on the fear of heights! Same here. I really haven’t spent a lot of time in the mountains up there. I’ve done the hike to the Big Horn Mine a few times with the most recent being eight years ago or something like that. It is a very scenic area! Speaking of the Big Horn Mine, I heard that the recent wildfire that roared through that entire area took out that mine and a good portion of the trail leading to it. I know Mount Baldy also burned, but I didn’t drive up far enough into the mountains to look at the damage when I was making this video.
Thanks for checking out the video and letting me know that you enjoyed it! You’ll find all my spooky videos I’ve posted over the years in this playlist on my channel titled: Haunted Mines, Creepy Mines, and Mines That People Have Died In
I almost did this hike at night but decided not to at the last minute. I’m used to being in abandoned mines out in the middle of the desert where nobody is around for miles, so I was a little bit out of my element in this one.
Other people will know the answer: When I was a kid we lived where could see the mountains. Mom pointed at one and said it was called Mt. Baldy, maybe because a neighbor told her that was it, not because she actually knew. This was Garden Grove, CA, which is near Anaheim/Disneyland. 6 year old me was probably more impressed with seeing fireworks every night.
Mount Baldy and a couple other local peaks can be seen from Anaheim Hills, so I’m sure that’s in the general vicinity of Anaheim. Your mom was probably correct.
this is where I used to hike, theres actually a small prospect mine, if you go to the end of this tunnel, and look directly across the riverbed about eye level from the tunnel on the hill that makes the other side of the valley. not very big, but its there, you can see it from the tunnel. EDIT: I got there by climbing down where that waterfall would be. at 6:37 in the middle of the screen theres that yellow part of the hill, and if you see the green bushes to the right of it, where they bump up a little bit, like 2 inches right of the yellow hill, theres a black area. thats the little prospect mine. just realized, this is the same mine the commenter PHARRAOH mentioned. funny, like 10 years ago I used his video to find the mine myself.
Yes, Pharraoh mentioned the small mine in his comment. That’s funny that you used his video to find that mine yourself a long time ago. I recently saw a video that somebody posted of that mine and was pretty impressed by how extensive it was inside. Flooded mines are always interesting. Thanks for taking the time to write your comment here!
6:20 ive seen a guy survive that fall with bongo drums in his backpack. Literally the only thing that saved his life very lucky he landed on his back than his face, wouldnt have had a buddy to walk home with that night
Wow! That’s an amazing anecdote! Thanks for sharing it. In my narration I estimated the height of that ledge to be about 100 feet up. Looking back, that might’ve been too high. It might be closer to 50 feet. I will tell you, though, that as I was standing there at that ledge getting my footage, I suddenly got a pretty strong case of vertigo. I don’t know what caused that. I actually had to stop filming, put my back against the tunnel wall, and slowly turn away from the ledge.
@@Luminoussound2024 i’m not sure how the drainage culvert was constructed. The big road tunnel that’s right above it was obviously done with dynamite, so they probably use dynamite in the culvert as well. Thanks, Alex!
Yeah, definitely was an interesting tunnel. Very well-constructed, too! I’ve always wanted to explore storm drains, so this was a little bit of that. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment - I appreciate it!

Haha it is unfortunate that there's not a great outlet for such talented people as taggers. I'm similarly conflicted because some of the art really is great, but some of it really is an eyesore. Unfortunately it seems like encouraging the one encourages them both
I get mixed feelings when I see graffiti in places it doesn’t belong but like you said there are some good artists that make good art pieces. It added a character to the drainage tunnel in your video.
Thanks, David! Yes, the graffiti can get a little garish and overdone at times. There are some really spectacular pieces, though, obviously painted by people with a lot of talent. This was a fun and unsettling place to explore.
