In the movie "The Beast" , they really made the terrain look like the Kandahar Plateau. There are some issues with the small arms and the modified DShk but, as a former tanker, I fully agree - one of the best tank movies ever made.

"The Beast of War" is one of those overlooked little masterpieces that hardly anybody has even heard of let alone seen. I was fortunate enough to catch it on cable back in the early 90's when they were running it. One of the best war films of the last 40 years or so.

I have it on DVD (yep) and to be honest it ranks up there for me with Saving Pvt Ryan in terms of "realistic portrayal of war"... it can be a bit obtuse at times for theatrical effect, but overall the movie works.

It was playing regularly on Greek tv back in the 90's. Great character dynamics and an original theme (especially for the time). I might be alittle biased by nostalgia but I think that it is the best tank movie to this day.

Red Dawn never gets credit for a decent M-1 Abrams mockup on the opposing side when they get up to the front lines. I've always loved it as it looks good but they made a point in not showing it too close. In "The Beast" they used liquid-filled heads for the main gun tank rounds, which is why the main guns go into full battery as they should as the liquid gives enough resistance against the blank charges (and also creates a massive amount of steam which looks like smoke). With expertly-timed ground charges, many still think they used live rounds in the opening of this movie.

So the Israelis made a short series called "The Valley of Tears" about the Yom Kipur War (or The October War if you are an Arab). The series is frankly shit and misses the opportunity to do one of the most impressive tank battles of all time justice. But they did a scene in the beginning which shows remarkably well the way modern Israeli tank crews are drilled to fight (I was in one, so I know what I am talking about). The guy I talked to who actually did take part in the fighting as a loader told me that the accuracy of the tanks was highly exaggerated for the tanks of the time and more appropriate for modern tanks with fancy optics and aiming systems, but the basics are there. Check it out.

Loved the video! Would like to add 2 brief scenes from different movies, which to my knowledge, are the only ones where actual M1 Abrams tanks appear in movies. Not really tank movies at all, but still worth noting since real M1s are super rare in cinema to this day. 1st one is War of the Worlds (2005). The hill battle scene vs tripods features a USMC M1A1 Abrams tank rolling up the hill. 2nd one is in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009). Battle scene in Egypt features a US Army M1A2 Abrams.

Good selection and I’ve give a strong recommendation to “Valley Of Tears”, an Israeli miniseries picked up by HBO about the epic 1973 defense of the Golan Heights by outnumbered Israeli tank units.

The Beast of War could be one of the greatest tank movies of all time, but the American accents of the main cast, who are meant to be playing Russians, just completely takes you out of the movie

US army: this movie about the gulf war isn’t overly positive and patriotic, we won’t let you have our tanks
UK army: this movie about the atrocities in Bosnia and mental trauma suffered by soldiers is very well researched, we’ll support this BBC production all the way!

THANK YOU for adding Pentagon Wars! Though it was an HBO exclusive movie, it provided for a funny look into the military-industrial complex and certainly made you think about the corners that had to be cut at the expense of those who use the tanks.

Very good list. I was surprised to see Damien Lewis in Warrior. I will have to check that out. How many alum from Band of Brothers appeared in The Walking Dead. We saw Joe Acevedo and I know Michael Cudlitz was also in the series.
Have you ever done a video on vehicles used in movies for urban assault? Perhaps a UAV (Urban Assault Vehicle)? If not then it could be fun, especially because you would get to include Stripes EM-50 UAV.

Buffalo Soldier, the Joker, am I right?
I also own Operation Red Sea, though they used the Hummer, they would have probably used their own, China's Dongfeng Mengshi, which looks very similar to the HMMWV. I have a 1/64 scale version of one.
I also own Beaufort, an Israeli film, I can't recall if there where any tanks in that film, however, I wanted to mention it.
May I ask, will you, or have you made a review of CBC's mini series about the Avro Arrow?
I hope this video goes well for you this time.
Take care, and all the best.

OK so once again I am mentioning the Saints and Soldiers series. Specifically, Airborne creed and The Void. Airborne creed has a great final battle against a very nice Panzer III mock up and in The Void, they use two restored M18 Hellcats against the same Panzer III mock-up though they film it as if there were 3 tanks. The mock-up is really well done compared to many I've seen and the Hellcats steal the show with their speed and firepower. Good movies all around.

in the movie 'The Interview', Kim Jong Un (Randall Park) told David Skylark (James Franco) that the T55 was given to his grand father or father by Stalin himself. The T55 was first produced in 1958, but Stalin died in 1953. That scene made no sense at all
