Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr. Two absolute music legends. Funk, jazz, and soul at its finest. You'll definitely crack 100k subscribers Nick. Your show attracts true music lovers, and your reactions are so pure. Keep on grooving my brother
Bill Withers is incredible. One of those artists that touches your soul. I could listen to Grover play the saxophone all day! My oldest son play’s saxophone, flute and clarinet anytime I hear someone playing these instruments it makes me smile. I couldn’t imagine a world without music.
It is always special to a person when they have a close relationship with a grandparent. Father's parents - grandfather died right before I was born and grandmother died when I was about 11. We were not extremely close but she was sweet to me. Mothers parents had so many grandkids, but I loved them dearly - not super close with either of them. My girls were different. One daughter was extremely close to husband's father... the other daughter was extremely close to my mother so they each got to feel very special.
69k 70k is just around the corner and 100k in no time. You guys are the best. Great Marathon Bill Withers is amazing so much soul he never gets old. Great old memories for me and new ones for you and Lex.
Steel drum, Nick. I fell in love with my husband even deeper when he played steel drum for a friend’s event. I first enjoyed “Just the Two of Us” on the Grover Washington Jr album, “Winelight.” Great marathon and reaction. Thanks. ❤️😽
Thanks Dave and Nick for this great marathon. Bill Withers was one of the greats! The long notes at the end of Lovely Day seem impossible to recreate. Grover Washington Jr, imo, totally underrated.🎶🎙️🎷
Nick, the calypso sounding instrument is the steel drum: played by Ralph Macdonald. He was the premier percussionist of the time. He also had several very popular albums around that time. Just the two of us actually came out in 1981 on Grover Washington's "Winelight" album.
Grover Washington Jr. has been called one of the founders of smooth jazz (my favorite genre of music). I have heard you use the term "chillaxin" more than once. You should react to the song named "Chillaxin" by a smooth jazz artist named Euge Groove. You won't be disappointed! Keep this genre coming! I love it!
Thanks Dave, that was perfect. I think that 'Lovely Day' rises above genres and categories, it's just one of my favourite songs full stop! I don't have very many jazz albums, but I do have Grover's 'Winelight' album from which 'Just the Two of Us' comes. Absolutely brilliant, and hearing 'Soulful Strut' and 'Black Frost' again was a real pleasure. I agree with you Nick, when you have music like this, what else do you need? Marvellous!
Frankly, this is the song, Just the Two of Us, that always plays in the background of my mind when you and Lexi are doing reactions together... And I was wondering when if ever you'd get around to Grover and these tunes... Mr. Magic and Winelight were always on my play list when I was married. So, I'm so glad these have come into your life. Don't sleep on David Sanborn, Waynan Tisdale, Nagi, Yuseff Latif, Herbie Hancock, Pual Taylor... Street Life... George Benson, Wes Montgomery....
Fantastic marathon, Nick and Dave! Nick, we have some things in common- I'm the youngest grandchild too, and my paternal grandfather died when my dad was only six. I barely knew my mom's dad, he died when I was five, or my dad's mom, she died when I was six. I had my maternal grandmother until I was thirteen, but really didn't spend much time with her. I always envied others who had long- lasting relationships with their grandparents. "Grandma's Hands" is such a great song! It's funny, but the next two songs have been used for TV commercials recently- "Lovely Day" was in one where a young woman rolls out of bed, dragging her bedding, which she ends up rolling up in, then proceeds to roll through her neighborhood, rolling up in laundry, hoses, etc. I couldn't even tell you what the commercial was for, but it was entertaining and had a great soundtrack! "Just The Two Of Us" was an adorable young father with his baby in a frontpack, facing outward, and he dances with the baby as he loads his laundry- it is really cute! I usually mute commercials, but not those! It's cool that you mentioned "Soulful Strut" sounding like a backing track, because it started out as that! Barbara Acklin recorded a song called "Am I The Same Girl" with this as the backing track. Those of my generation will remember Young-Holt Unlimited's record- I always liked it. I don't remember ever hearing GW's cover, but it sure is tasty! "Black Frost" sounded vaguely familiar, but anyway, it's a great track! "Ain't No Sunshine" has a permanent spot on my playlist. Thanks for a great one, guys! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie
It was a Lovely Day...listening to NicknLex, windows open, Leaf-dapple shadows dancing across the wall...AND that 18 second long note: daaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy. Not the record holder but definitely up there!
On Lovely Day, Bill has the world record for holding a note the longest on a recording. At least that's what I've been told 😆. He does hold "day" for a very long time.
I Wish Lexi could have shared “Grandma’s Hands” with you? Bill Withers & Grover (on Sax) together on “ Just the Two of Us”, Awesome! Outstanding! PS, there is a longer version of Grandma’s Hands”….. SanJoséBob
Soulful Strut, I have loved that music since I was around 6 or 7 years old. It was Barbara Acklin's song "Am I the Same Girl" (same music). One of my oldest music memory. I was trying to sing the main theme of the song, and in my young french kid ears, it sounded something like this: awanawaayouwa awaneenee, waneenee. It makes me smile everytime I hear that song 😂
The instrument you are looking for in the Just the two of us song are called Steel drums they were traditionally made from discarded oildrums and are from Trinidad and Tobago. The other instrument you mentioned is a Hang or Handpan and based on that and was developed by two people from Switzerland. Soulful strut was later sung by Swing out Sister and many others.
Great marathon Nick and Dave! Bill Withers was such a talent - his diverse tunes, remarkable voice, instruments and melodies were just perfect. Love all of these songs. Thanks so much guys for this reaction!💦
Bill Could be the most under-rated singer ever, Use Me, Lean On Me. Band Geeks do a fun cover of Just the Two of Us, the lead singer doing impressions of different singers. Geoff Castelucci does a good cover of Ain't No Sunshine with his Basso Profundo voice. Went through a Grover phase, might have to circle back
Nick, por fa…”Sneek a Peek” Euge Groove, “Put it Where You Want It” Crusaders, “Street Life” Crusaders ft. Randy Crawford, “ The Bottle” Gil Scott Heron, “Always There” Ronnie Laws….just clean Jazz, Please Listen (along with Lexi)……SanJoséBob
Bill was a master musician and singer !
Grover and Bill simply No Better ever!! Steel drums on Just the two of us. Masterful!!!

Ah, nice n light!...and cool to boot! Thank you Messieur Nick!
Nothing better than a lazy Saturday morning drinking coffee and listening to Bill Withers and Grover. Great stuff Dave and Nick.

Steel drums, originally from the islands of Trinidad & Tobago, hence the beach sound

Steel Drum.
Steel Drums?
Nick,
The title song on Grover’s Mr Magic album is really fun to jam with on guitar.
Lex needs to be on the Bill block.

Great list. They did a Gil Scott Heron for me long ago - time for another. Thanks. 😽❤️🔥

A similar album to Mister magic is Idris Muhammad Power of Soul. Same label with a lot of the same cats playing on it.✌️😎
Renaissance. Things i don't understand. Album Turn of the Cards. Please guys!!! I love your videos.
Old joke...how do you make a duck play soul music? Put it in the microwave until its bill withers.
Steel drum
Con gonzalito mirándote y para cuando nada salvaje de ERUKA SATIVA q le gusta al toxiquito
one of the secrets of the lovely day chorus is bill singing one the edge of the note being out of tune... it just ads so much tension and soul
Steel drum
