I never knew that Teddy sampled that snippet out of Bill Withers' ("Grandma's Hands") tune to come up with the melody/motif for "No Diggity." Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio was a sample of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise among other samples. I'm sure they came correct because the fans know the original songs. We'd be on it he was trying to slip something by. I'll check.
@@DBox3591. Yes, that's no surprise (with that example you cited by Coolio). The thing is... Many/most of these 1990's, 2000's, & 2010's music "producers" are NOT great musicians. They've simply gotten EXTREMELY good at using modern music technology to dissect & extract breakbeats, breakdowns, hooks, & etc. from long forgotten R&B grooves to create new tunes. I was just slightly surprised by Jamie's explanation of this particular song's history because TR is actually a very good musician & phenomenal producer. (Just goes to illustrate that even the better R&B producers have been "sampling" for a minute).

I get what you're saying about Teddy Riley but maybe he and the others needed Bill's beat to do what they wanted to do? 🤷🏽♀️ I was just enjoying Aloe Blacc's I'm the Man and after listening to it again I decided to check on who the writers were cause part of his song was, "..and you can tell everybody.." And it was exactly lyrics and music from This is Your Song by Elton John. Lo and behold, the first 2 names listed on the lyrics were Elton and his partner followed by Aloe and his partners. Now the song is fantastic but if that's what you want to do with your song you gotta get permission or write something that doesn't get you in trouble. Cause somebody thought of it first. 😂

In the days before TH-cam, Pandora, Spotify, digital music downloads, Internet radio, etc... I would spend hours reading record LP jackets & the credits (whenever I got the opportunity to peruse through someone's music collection). Sampling (in itself) is a controversial topic & issue. I get the impression that some musicians, artistes, actual talented producers, & the fake "producers" sample music snippets & musical motifs from older, forgotten, or classic songs to pay homage to the original writers & vocalists. (And to consciously give those older artistes a retirement/pension boost because of the accompanying publishing credits that go along with using their material). Other "producers" do nothing but "sample" because they lack musicianship, creativity, & can't come up with catchy material using their own talents.
Teddy once said in an interview that someone else did the beat but couldn’t make it a song. It was just a loop until Teddy out the finishing touches to it

I never knew that Teddy sampled that snippet out of Bill Withers' ("Grandma's Hands") tune to come up with the melody/motif for "No Diggity." Hope TR hit Mr. Withers off with some appropriate publishing credit & $$ (while he was alive).

Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio was a sample of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise among other samples. I'm sure they came correct because the fans know the original songs. We'd be on it he was trying to slip something by. I'll check.
@@DBox3591. Yes, that's no surprise (with that example you cited by Coolio). The thing is... Many/most of these 1990's, 2000's, & 2010's music "producers" are NOT great musicians. They've simply gotten EXTREMELY good at using modern music technology to dissect & extract breakbeats, breakdowns, hooks, & etc. from long forgotten R&B grooves to create new tunes. I was just slightly surprised by Jamie's explanation of this particular song's history because TR is actually a very good musician & phenomenal producer. (Just goes to illustrate that even the better R&B producers have been "sampling" for a minute).
SoundScientist1 Well, everything is cool because Bill Withers is listed as the first writer of the song followed by the others. I get what you're saying about Teddy Riley but maybe he and the others needed Bill's beat to do what they wanted to do? 🤷🏽♀️ I was just enjoying Aloe Blacc's I'm the Man and after listening to it again I decided to check on who the writers were cause part of his song was, "..and you can tell everybody.." And it was exactly lyrics and music from This is Your Song by Elton John. Lo and behold, the first 2 names listed on the lyrics were Elton and his partner followed by Aloe and his partners. Now the song is fantastic but if that's what you want to do with your song you gotta get permission or write something that doesn't get you in trouble. Cause somebody thought of it first. 😂

It's not my main occupation, but as a life-long "music lover"/musician... This stuff is all very interesting to me. In the days before TH-cam, Pandora, Spotify, digital music downloads, Internet radio, etc... I would spend hours reading record LP jackets & the credits (whenever I got the opportunity to peruse through someone's music collection).
Sampling (in itself) is a controversial topic & issue. I get the impression that some musicians, artistes, actual talented producers, & the fake "producers" sample music snippets & musical motifs from older, forgotten, or classic songs to pay homage to the original writers & vocalists. (And to consciously give those older artistes a retirement/pension boost because of the accompanying publishing credits that go along with using their material).
Other "producers" do nothing but "sample" because they lack musicianship, creativity, & can't come up with catchy material using their own talents.
Teddy once said in an interview that someone else did the beat but couldn’t make it a song. It was just a loop until Teddy out the finishing touches to it
