My older brother convinced me to see this (my turn to pick a movie) and I convinced my dad that no really, I wanted to see The Thing… I saw the dog ‘turn inside-out’ and bolted right down the aisle. Made it to the door before dad was aware. I was 6. Didn’t watch it again until about 10 years ago - glad I missed the spider head the first time around.
If you speak Norwegian, they give away the movie right at the start. The guy trying to kill the "dog" is yelling "It's not a dog! It's a thing! You have to kill it!"
It's even funnier when you consider the fact that he, too, is one of them at the time. It's like he's reacting to his counterpart's shitty escape attempt 😂
For the most part the practical effects are better than the CGI. CGI is super expensive to do properly. Movie studios would never give the artists the time to do it anyway. The first CGI final fantasy movie cost a fortune for example, had like 1000 people animating it and took a whole warehouse of top of the line computers to render and they still had a lot of issues with the uncanny valley. It's just difficult to believe for some reason; i think because it isn't physically there like the props are.

Blair was actually the most sane. The simulation told them point blank that if the creature makes any contact with the any population, humanity is doomed. So Blair immediately destroyed all communications devices and vehicles to protect the world. Loved you reaction! I remember my brother and I watching this growing up. Hope you both have a good day!
Yes, many people don't immediately pick up on why Blair is reacting the way he is- he's the first one to realize just how dire the situation is and how important it is that they be isolated from the rest of the world ("Nobody gets in or out of here! NOBODY!"). Later when he is locked in the tool shed you see the noose he was fashioning to end his life as he despaired for his own fate and the fate of the world, but by the time they talk to him again he is now infected and just wants to get out.

Some loud scenes caught the attention of a few of my cousins, aunt and uncles and were like wtf Christmas movie is that? "There's snow" I said.😏
Sure, but it still doesn't make sense, because he made no effort to leave a warning for those who would eventually come to rescue them, and wouldn't be aware of the situation there, and thus would have brought it to the US/Europe anyway.
Makes perfect sense, though. Movie theaters are mainly about the social component, so why wouldn't you like seeing someone else's reactions in a smaller, but similar scenario?

I've actually watched a couple of reactors who start questioning why they want to shoot the dog and become suspicious before it even makes it to the camp, so those folks might stand a chance.
I showed my girl this movie not too long ago and she was rooting for that damn alien dog. Of course she changed her tune when it started killing the real dogs

I was very young when this initially came out. My dad turned off all the lights and the AC up, so it was super cold in the house. We would be huddled in blankets on the couch watching this. We did this a couple times over the years coming up, it kinda made you feel like you were there. It'll be a memory from my childhood that will stick with me, good times.
@DukeOfChirk Still is.. the other thing he liked doing is in Predator when they unload on the Forrest after Jentura's character gets killed, he turns up the surround sound until the house vibrates. Lol It's like being there amidst the gunfire.
Sadly this movie was kind of a flop when it released and Carpenter was really upset, they also weren’t supposed to add that opening shot of the ship, idk why they did that, so dumb. But after it gained such a large following after its release to video, he wasn’t raw about it.

Earlier this year a local theater showed this in a sci-fi fest. I had only seen it at home on video. When you’re enclosed in a dark theater, the experience is so much more. You really get the sense of being trapped in the outpost with the characters
What makes this movie better in my opinion than most is the fact that if you re-watch it you notice those little details that you didn't notice the first time going through
Blair wrecks the helicopter and the radio so noone can leave or call for help. He knows that if any of the thing gets back, the world will end. So He is trying to strand everyone here so that the world is safe. Everyone thinks he is crazy, but he is really trying to save the world.
This is one of the rare movies that will always stand the test of time because of the absolutely amazing practical effects used. Apparently the effects were so compelling that only Wilford Brimley (Blair) was unbothered by it, while everyone else was throwing up or struggling not to.
Brimley had been a Marine with combat experience. He'd also been a bodyguard for Howard Hughes. He could have probably taken the entire rest of the cast out single-handedly.
the "crazed" Norwegian that accidentally shoots one of the expedition members shouts "Get the hell away from that thing. That's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real!
John Carpenter is such an underrated director. He made small budget movies that were classics and he did everything - director, producer, director of photography, the music score.

Pretty much everything he was involved with was outside the "norm," the "zeitgist," the hot thing of its time. I can't say it definitively, but I highly doubt any of his works were quickly best-selling. Please correct me whenever it's appropriate; born 1980, the first scary movie I saw was Little Shop of Horrors, or maybe Sesame Street: Follow That Bird, fr! 💯🤙🏼🤷♂️

Blair is not infected when he’s tearing up the communications room and killing the dogs. He’s taking extreme action in order to prevent the “organism” from escaping to civilization.
@jaysonb.6669 in the short story his character isn't infected until being isolated in the shed. I believe he was human until then. It doesn't necessarily help the alien to be so isolated. Most likely a human would do that to ensure it can't escape.
The artists; those behind the practical effects , and Carpenter’s phenomenal portrayal of Bill Lancaster story will never fail to impress audiences. There was nothing like this at the time. Masterpiece in every way
The VFX guy, the one who actually built the models, had a major fever and mental exhaustion to the point of getting _hospitalized_ as soon as he was finished with the movie.
@@JoshSweetvale VFX guy was Rob Bottin and he was so exhausted because he invented the effects during the shoot. Nothing like this had been tried before the Thing and, according to Carpenter, he wasn't sure Bottin could pull it off. Rob basically lived on the set, perfecting, testing and setting up the effects shop almost single handed. Amazing film, one of my favorites.
Blaire almost certainly wasn't infected when he smashed everything up and killed the dogs. He just went into an insane panic when he realized that anything alive could be absorbed and that if it absorbed any of the crew, it could use the radios and helicopters to sneak its way out of Antarctica. And yeah, this movie rocks. While the ending is ambiguous, there's actually a PS2 game that John Carpenter signed off on as canon that takes place after the movie, showing that both Childs and Mac were human.
Blair touches his pen to the Thing to point then puts it in his mouth. I think he realized what was happening but as the Thing took over he became more and more erratic.
Nah he could have been infected. In fact, notice that when he was at the computer he was wearing a yellow shirt, but when he is in the radio room he isn't wearing it, and in the Bennings scene just before - everyone is outside

Also, Copper wasn't infected even though he was attacked. Yes, all it needs to do is touch you, but it has to be a certain amount with so much intent to actually infect. Plus, if you watch closely, the pen never actually touches his lips
A masterclass in sci-fi horror, this movie is 41 years old and still hands down beats most films today. Such a shame the movie flopped due to it going up against the cute ET and audiences not really appreciating the gore and paranoia. Thankfully it gained massive popularity when it hit the Home Video market and became a cult classic.
My all-time favorite horror movie. It never gets old. The definition of a cult film. Not as popular as it should have been originally, but universally loved by nearly everyone who has ever gone back to watch it.
Great movie, it was brilliant on the part of the writers to NOT have subtitles when the Norwegian pilot was talking in the beginning, which would have let them know WHY he was trying to kill the dog.
And without trying to sound too morbid - But I´m also glad John Carpenter is still alive so he could see his "flopp" turning into a masterpiece years later. It has always been a masterpiece but I guess the ppl wasn´t ready for it yet after the friendly E.T.

@corbinbates2708 He almost hospitalized himself making this film. Hrs was working 18 hour days, sleeping on the effects room table and living on junk food from vending machines. He was finally forced to take a break when other people started noticing how pale and sickly he was looking and realized what he'd been up to.
@riffgroove : That is right, he overworked himself, poor Rob, so the other legendary F/X Master Stan Winston came in and saved it, doing the Dog scene I believe, til Rob could get back. Stan didn't want credit taken away from Rob so he asked to be uncredited in the film.
Just starting this video and having seen this film over 50 times (I worked at the theater where it opened,) I already know that Asia is going to be watching most of this through her fingers. Shout out to Rob Bottin and his make-up effects. Even for this era, they were amazing.
This movie is a prime example of the often forgotten principle of cinematography: show, don’t tell. All they do is show you the scenes they want you to see as slowly as possible and they put some eerie music on top. There you go! You’ve got yourself a survival horror movie!
Carpenter's The Thing is one of the rare example where they tell about as much as they show. Heck, if you speak Norwegian, you get to know what's going on within a few minutes of the movie starting. The computer lays it out in the open too. The movie doesn't shy away from anything _other_ than the suspense it creates in making you wonder who is infected.
Blair actually wasn't crazy, he was trying to do anything he could to stop the thing from escaping the camp and infecting larger areas. But when he was lock away someone with keys unlocked the door and infected him.
How are you terrible for saying that? It IS adorable! Things like that make these reactions all the more worth it. I don't regret one second I've spent watching these particular videos since I started watching them only a few months ago - reactions to 'the Thing' being roughly a quarter of them.
This movie is genuinely unsettling. They don't really use jump scares or excessive gore, because the concept of a nightmare lovecraftian alien is enough. Plus, the human characters are interesting and believable. They react to the threat in a convincing way. The constant feeling of paranoia and anticipation was done very well too. Finally, it's got some of the best practical effects ever done. The Fly did it better, but only slightly
They _do_ use excessive gore. All tropes are tools. Seeing a morphing meatblob is horrifying, because the gore you're seeing will look completely different in the next scene.
@JoshSweetvale it didn't seem excessive, considering the context of what was happening. People do tend to bleed a bit when ripped apart. Although, most horror movies do tend to add more gore and blood than what would be physically possible. I guess it's because it does create a visceral reaction. But not in everyone. I think I was just happy to have characters who did not behave like complete idiots. That is a trope that needs to die. The monster is not scary if it only kills really stupid people😆
I congratulate you both for keeping your eyes open and on the screen, through the scariest, grossest and most violent scenes. Asia, even through your latticed fingers, you were watching and able to appreciate the inventiveness and humour through all the disgusting scenes. Well done, both of you.
This is the first film in what people call John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy". The others are Prince of Darkness (1987) and In the Mouth of Madness (1993). I'd definitely recommend seeing these films, as well.
I have a love/hate thing with Prince of Darkness, but only because I have seen it too many times to overlook the few core issues it has in its continuity. Still good though. In the Mouth of Madness, though, is high up in my favorite movies of all time.
YES!! Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy is Epic! I saw The Thing (Which is a remake of "The Thing From Another World", but sticks to the novel) in 1982, and been hooked ever since. Glad you guys enjoyed it!
Carpenter said that they were expecting all kinds of trouble getting the dog to do what they wanted... but that creepy walk down the hallway and the pause, then entering the room, the pup nailed it first take. Awesome!
Windows dropped the keys when Bennings was being assimilated. You see him twirling them on his finger while entering the store room, and you can hear them hit the floor when he spots Bennings.
I suppose someone's probably mentioned this by now, but Asia wasn't far off when she called the excellent animal actor Jed a wolf. He was actually half-wolf/half-Alaskan Malamute. The latter is similar in appearance to a Siberian Husky, although larger. There aren't many Malamutes registered over here in Sweden, but I stumbled upon one a few years ago. Really beautiful (and big!) dogs with very thick fur. 🥰
Wolves are hard to work with, and most filmmakers would rather not. They're like cats, in that they can be trained to do complex things, and perform perfectly - until shooting starts. Then it's "Naw, not today."

The scene where the dog enters an unknown characters room and then the fade out is awesome. I saw this as a teen with my Dad and that was such a pivotal element to the mystery of the film. So well done for 1982 and the SFX designs were incredible. Scared me a bit at just 14yrs old but I have since re-watched it every year.

27:24 The Doc saw what will happen if the alien reaches the human population, he is in the process of making sure that won't happen. he destroys the helicopter, so the team can't leave, and the radio, so they won't call for help, and get more people infected. eventually kills the rest of the sled dogs, so they can't use sleds to escape. he seems crazy, and could have told the team what's going down, but he chose violence 😂another great reaction to one of my favs!
I went to see this movie in theatres in 2022 for its 40th anniversary! It was an enhanced edition with BTS interviews and scenes instead of ads for other movies. It was a magical night!
This has been the most fun movie reactions I've seen to this movie. Rob Bottin did 95% of the creature effects and got sick on set and have to be airlifted to hospital because of overworking. The result is easily some of the best creature effects of all time for a movie. The effects were easily award worthy but did not get an award.
I love the post watch banter where BJ spent the whole time trying to blame Asia for his scares/jumps and Asia unable to stop laughing. That was so much fun. Thanks for this.
This movie encompasses why the 80s physical props are the best thing that ever existed. This body horror is done just as well in Anime, I can’t wait for you guys to grow into watching things like “Akira”. Having a deep film lexicon like you guys are building genuinely makes for smarter, more empathetic people. God damn this movie is gross tho 😂 and definitely why it’s in my absolute favorites.
i feel in similar way about Terminator. People may laugh at first part as much as they want, but metal skeleton there was more terrifying than CGI bullshit in Genisys.

Palmer's "You gotta be f**king kidding" was unscripted. It was the actor's honest, ad-libbed reaction to seeing the spider head skittering out of the room.
The atmosphere, the drab vibe, tension, no bullshit, dryness,music, acting, , and actual physical effects made this movie absolutely one of the greatest horror thriller movies ever made. Other obvious classics, American Warewolf In London, Shining, Event Horizon, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later
Watching Asia peering from behind her splayed fingers was worth the price of admission alone ; What a masterpiece. Set, direction, screenplay, music, and acting, all blended together in a perfect whole!
Friends and I drove into LA to see the opening of Blade Runner but it was sold out. This opened on the same night at the same theater so we in we went. Imagine a couple hundred people all making essentially the same sounds as Asia and BJ.

This is one of your greatest reactions! The great thing about this movie is that it doesn't hold your hand. It shows the Thing infect someone ONCE and from then on you discover who the Thing is impersonating as soon as the characters know.
Dad watched this with me when I was 13, told me "Do NOT get attached to the dogs." Yeah I learned that the hard way. Was absolutely devestated to see the pups getting killed!
We will honestly never know who was infected at the end and Carpenter will never say. He recently did an interview and flat out said he will never tell, the whole point at the end is to not be certain who it is.
And that the world is probably doomed..... Because eventually someone will find their bodies and recover them!! End of civilization as we know it. The only hope we have is believing that neither of the final two survivors is a Thing. And they had successfully destroyed it before they freeze to death. One of the greatest endings in sci-fi history. Self doubt and questioning of everyone throughout the movie to culminate even in the end of still wondering!🎉🎉🎉
I used to watch the 1950's version every time it came on tv and was scared out of my mind. I knew if John Carpenter did the remake is was gonna be extra scary. Alien and The Thing have to be the two scariest movies i have ever seen at the theatre. Great reaction, especially Asia, as she was almost laughing in sheer delight, as she was so scared.
Glad to see someone else here is old enough to remember the 1950s version. James Arness (Matt Dillon in the old Gunsmoke TV show) played the monster. 😊
I love how Carpenter paid tribute to one of his favorite films in his movie Halloween. The Thing From Another World was playing in the background as one of the horror movies the kids were watching.
@vickib5579 Another old favorite of mine is "It terror from beyond space". It starred Marshall Thompson from the old TV show Daktari. The creators of Alien give partial credit to the story line as an inspiration for their movie. Both movies had creatures that were extremely to kill, and loved the duct work.
Yeah this one is the first remake of the original "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" which was made back in 1955 I believe. While the first one was more suspenseful than "horror" it was still a good movie for it's time. This first remake was an attempt to take off from where the original more or less left off, hence the rectangle cut in the ice near the beginning.
I don't really consider this a remake of the 1950s movie *The Thing from Another World* b/c they are quite different. John Carpenter's *The Thing* is a direct adaptation of the original short story "Who Goes There?" written by John W. Campbell back in the '30s. Carpenter's version stays extremely true to the original story.
Asia, you scared the hell out of me with that jump when Blair put his hand in that guy's face! 😂 Speaking of Blair (before he was finally assimilated), he was sane and human when he was bashing up the copter and all the communication systems. He was trying to save humanity from The Thing! This 1982 movie is a 1970s hangover - all that paranoia!

This movie is a classic, and probably still one of the best horror movies out there. Considering its age, that's saying something. Hope y'all don't have nightmares!! LOL.
Number 1: Norris is the one assimilated by the dog. Number 2: Palmer is the second assimilated. Number 3: You are not infected you are digested and replaced. And Number 4: Both Childs and Mac are human at the end. BECAUSE if only one of them is the thing there is no need to hide at this point and the thing would have assimilated the last remaining human. There is no need to have a conversation with the last human.
There's also that The Thing can split and act on its own accord. Here's some major horror to think about: If a single Thing survived, it technically could split itself, and regenerate themselves as the crew they assimilated.
13:40 For me, the most unsettling moments in the movie. That "dog" motionlessly staring. Even though we didn't know what it really was, it freaked me out the first time, and still does. It's just too ... still for a dog. It just looks unnatural, which is such a great yet subtle tell that it's something else. Top rate dog actor!
Been waiting so long for you guys to watch this!! The undisputed champion of horror, and one of the greatest films to ever exist. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the effects, the acting, the tension, the suspense, the music, the direction, every little detail makes this movie amazing.
The newest version is actually the story of the Norwegian camp, and what happened there before Kurt Russell and the others found the dog. Worth a watch after this one for more context ❤
I disagree. The Thing in 2011 attacks in the open as oppose to its established nature of isolating single victims. In 1982 we don't see both Palmer and Norris attacked, and there is an answer to how did the thing get the keys to the blood, it's answered. This mystery is well constructed and there is clues throughout. The 2011 CGI and how dumb The Thing is compared to 1982, discard it. The questions this movie asks is worth keeping it a mystery to the imagination, all opinion, but I'm right.

Few fun bits: When he poured his whiskey in the computer. The computer was indeed cheating. Somebody went back and checked and it made an illegal move to check mate him. When the Norwegians were shouting in the beginning of the movie, they are actually spoiling the movie: "Thats not a dog, its a thing!" Also the beginning when they check on the Norwegian base, its actually the main set after they burned it for the movie climax. They did not have enough money for 2 sets. This movie is a part of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy. The movies have no direct connect, but have broadly similar themes. The other two are Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness. Both are superb and some of the best horror movies ever made.
Such mindblowing special effects in this movie that still stand the test of time. I knew I was up for a real treat with this reaction video, and I wasn't left disappointed.

Not only does this movie hold up it is still better than most movies today.
For the most part the practical effects are better than the CGI.
CGI is super expensive to do properly. Movie studios would never give the artists the time to do it anyway.
The first CGI final fantasy movie cost a fortune for example, had like 1000 people animating it and took a whole warehouse of top of the line computers to render and they still had a lot of issues with the uncanny valley. It's just difficult to believe for some reason; i think because it isn't physically there like the props are.

The simulation told them point blank that if the creature makes any contact with the any population, humanity is doomed. So Blair immediately destroyed all communications devices and vehicles to protect the world.

Yes, many people don't immediately pick up on why Blair is reacting the way he is- he's the first one to realize just how dire the situation is and how important it is that they be isolated from the rest of the world ("Nobody gets in or out of here! NOBODY!").
Later when he is locked in the tool shed you see the noose he was fashioning to end his life as he despaired for his own fate and the fate of the world, but by the time they talk to him again he is now infected and just wants to get out.

Sure, but it still doesn't make sense, because he made no effort to leave a warning for those who would eventually come to rescue them, and wouldn't be aware of the situation there, and thus would have brought it to the US/Europe anyway.

I've actually watched a couple of reactors who start questioning why they want to shoot the dog and become suspicious before it even makes it to the camp, so those folks might stand a chance.
I showed my girl this movie not too long ago and she was rooting for that damn alien dog. Of course she changed her tune when it started killing the real dogs
Fr, and then its even better cuz saving the "dog" causes the other dog's deaths, so there's a sense of guilt in there, you rooted for the dog now look what happened.

I was very young when this initially came out. My dad turned off all the lights and the AC up, so it was super cold in the house. We would be huddled in blankets on the couch watching this. We did this a couple times over the years coming up, it kinda made you feel like you were there. It'll be a memory from my childhood that will stick with me, good times.

John Carpenter is one of my all time favorite filmmakers. He made so many cult classics, and inspired so many others in the industry.

Sadly this movie was kind of a flop when it released and Carpenter was really upset, they also weren’t supposed to add that opening shot of the ship, idk why they did that, so dumb. But after it gained such a large following after its release to video, he wasn’t raw about it.

Earlier this year a local theater showed this in a sci-fi fest. I had only seen it at home on video. When you’re enclosed in a dark theater, the experience is so much more. You really get the sense of being trapped in the outpost with the characters

Because some of those scenes are nasty and disturbing. The effects in this movie can still make me cringe 40 years later.
What makes this movie better in my opinion than most is the fact that if you re-watch it you notice those little details that you didn't notice the first time going through
Blair wrecks the helicopter and the radio so noone can leave or call for help. He knows that if any of the thing gets back, the world will end. So He is trying to strand everyone here so that the world is safe. Everyone thinks he is crazy, but he is really trying to save the world.
This is one of the rare movies that will always stand the test of time because of the absolutely amazing practical effects used. Apparently the effects were so compelling that only Wilford Brimley (Blair) was unbothered by it, while everyone else was throwing up or struggling not to.
It was probably due to his diabetes.....

Brimley had been a Marine with combat experience. He'd also been a bodyguard for Howard Hughes. He could have probably taken the entire rest of the cast out single-handedly.

John Carpenter is such an underrated director. He made small budget movies that were classics and he did everything - director, producer, director of photography, the music score.

Pretty much everything he was involved with was outside the "norm," the "zeitgist," the hot thing of its time. I can't say it definitively, but I highly doubt any of his works were quickly best-selling. Please correct me whenever it's appropriate; born 1980, the first scary movie I saw was Little Shop of Horrors, or maybe Sesame Street: Follow That Bird, fr! 💯🤙🏼🤷♂️

@jaysonb.6669 in the short story his character isn't infected until being isolated in the shed. I believe he was human until then. It doesn't necessarily help the alien to be so isolated. Most likely a human would do that to ensure it can't escape.
The artists; those behind the practical effects , and Carpenter’s phenomenal portrayal of Bill Lancaster story will never fail to impress audiences. There was nothing like this at the time. Masterpiece in every way

The acting and effects are first rate.
The VFX guy, the one who actually built the models, had a major fever and mental exhaustion to the point of getting _hospitalized_ as soon as he was finished with the movie.
@@JoshSweetvale VFX guy was Rob Bottin and he was so exhausted because he invented the effects during the shoot. Nothing like this had been tried before the Thing and, according to Carpenter, he wasn't sure Bottin could pull it off. Rob basically lived on the set, perfecting, testing and setting up the effects shop almost single handed. Amazing film, one of my favorites.
This film represents my favorite way of telling the story, when you never know more than the characters themselves. It makes you think, and wonder.

Blaire almost certainly wasn't infected when he smashed everything up and killed the dogs. He just went into an insane panic when he realized that anything alive could be absorbed and that if it absorbed any of the crew, it could use the radios and helicopters to sneak its way out of Antarctica. And yeah, this movie rocks. While the ending is ambiguous, there's actually a PS2 game that John Carpenter signed off on as canon that takes place after the movie, showing that both Childs and Mac were human.

Blair touches his pen to the Thing to point then puts it in his mouth. I think he realized what was happening but as the Thing took over he became more and more erratic.

@@fleacythesheepgirl the reason I don't believe that's how it's transmitted is...if it was that easy, it would have just infected their water supply and called it a day. Also, Copper wasn't infected even though he was attacked. Yes, all it needs to do is touch you, but it has to be a certain amount with so much intent to actually infect. Plus, if you watch closely, the pen never actually touches his lips
A masterclass in sci-fi horror, this movie is 41 years old and still hands down beats most films today.
Such a shame the movie flopped due to it going up against the cute ET and audiences not really appreciating the gore and paranoia.
Thankfully it gained massive popularity when it hit the Home Video market and became a cult classic.

Great movie, it was brilliant on the part of the writers to NOT have subtitles when the Norwegian pilot was talking in the beginning, which would have let them know WHY he was trying to kill the dog.
There were bootleg copies of ET getting around it was that big! I haven't seen it yet though!
And without trying to sound too morbid - But I´m also glad John Carpenter is still alive so he could see his "flopp" turning into a masterpiece years later. It has always been a masterpiece but I guess the ppl wasn´t ready for it yet after the friendly E.T.

Legendary movie. Rob Bottin legendary special effects artist. Incredible cast. John Carpenter is a genius.
If memory serves he did the effects on The Howling as well. Another top ten favorite horror and arguably the best werewolf transformation on film.
Rob was in his early 20s when he made this film.

He was finally forced to take a break when other people started noticing how pale and sickly he was looking and realized what he'd been up to.
@riffgroove : That is right, he overworked himself, poor Rob, so the other legendary F/X Master Stan Winston came in and saved it, doing the Dog scene I believe, til Rob could get back.
Stan didn't want credit taken away from Rob so he asked to be uncredited in the film.
Just starting this video and having seen this film over 50 times (I worked at the theater where it opened,) I already know that Asia is going to be watching most of this through her fingers. Shout out to Rob Bottin and his make-up effects. Even for this era, they were amazing.
This movie is a prime example of the often forgotten principle of cinematography: show, don’t tell.
All they do is show you the scenes they want you to see as slowly as possible and they put some eerie music on top. There you go! You’ve got yourself a survival horror movie!
Carpenter's The Thing is one of the rare example where they tell about as much as they show. Heck, if you speak Norwegian, you get to know what's going on within a few minutes of the movie starting. The computer lays it out in the open too.
The movie doesn't shy away from anything _other_ than the suspense it creates in making you wonder who is infected.
The 1951 version is REALLY good! Its black and white, and its called "The Thing From Another World". The acting and script is amazing!
This version is closer to the original 50s novella "who goes there" by the legendary John w Campbell one of the dean's of sci Fi literature
One of my favorites from when I was a kid watching Creature Feature.
The remake's title in the opening scene is actually a reference to the 1951 version, it uses the exact same text font as the older movie.

Blair actually wasn't crazy, he was trying to do anything he could to stop the thing from escaping the camp and infecting larger areas. But when he was lock away someone with keys unlocked the door and infected him.

How are you terrible for saying that? It IS adorable! Things like that make these reactions all the more worth it. I don't regret one second I've spent watching these particular videos since I started watching them only a few months ago - reactions to 'the Thing' being roughly a quarter of them.
This movie is genuinely unsettling. They don't really use jump scares or excessive gore, because the concept of a nightmare lovecraftian alien is enough. Plus, the human characters are interesting and believable. They react to the threat in a convincing way. The constant feeling of paranoia and anticipation was done very well too. Finally, it's got some of the best practical effects ever done. The Fly did it better, but only slightly

Seeing a morphing meatblob is horrifying, because the gore you're seeing will look completely different in the next scene.
@JoshSweetvale it didn't seem excessive, considering the context of what was happening. People do tend to bleed a bit when ripped apart. Although, most horror movies do tend to add more gore and blood than what would be physically possible. I guess it's because it does create a visceral reaction. But not in everyone. I think I was just happy to have characters who did not behave like complete idiots. That is a trope that needs to die. The monster is not scary if it only kills really stupid people😆
I congratulate you both for keeping your eyes open and on the screen, through the scariest, grossest and most violent scenes. Asia, even through your latticed fingers, you were watching and able to appreciate the inventiveness and humour through all the disgusting scenes. Well done, both of you.
lol, yeah, sort of a movie trope in itself to cover your face with your hands but split your fingers apart from each other so you can still see.
This is the first film in what people call John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy". The others are Prince of Darkness (1987) and In the Mouth of Madness (1993). I'd definitely recommend seeing these films, as well.
Mouth of Madness is so underrated
I have a love/hate thing with Prince of Darkness, but only because I have seen it too many times to overlook the few core issues it has in its continuity. Still good though.

YES!! Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy is Epic! I saw The Thing (Which is a remake of "The Thing From Another World", but sticks to the novel) in 1982, and been hooked ever since. Glad you guys enjoyed it!
The Thing, The Exorcist, and the original Halloween will stand the tests of time. The Thing set the standard for practical effects in my opinion

Carpenter said that they were expecting all kinds of trouble getting the dog to do what they wanted... but that creepy walk down the hallway and the pause, then entering the room, the pup nailed it first take. Awesome!

Windows dropped the keys when Bennings was being assimilated. You see him twirling them on his finger while entering the store room, and you can hear them hit the floor when he spots Bennings.
It's also why he ran off and went for the rifles - he panicked because he was partly at fault (though I totally forgive him)
I suppose someone's probably mentioned this by now, but Asia wasn't far off when she called the excellent animal actor Jed a wolf. He was actually half-wolf/half-Alaskan Malamute. The latter is similar in appearance to a Siberian Husky, although larger. There aren't many Malamutes registered over here in Sweden, but I stumbled upon one a few years ago. Really beautiful (and big!) dogs with very thick fur. 🥰
Wolves are hard to work with, and most filmmakers would rather not. They're like cats, in that they can be trained to do complex things, and perform perfectly - until shooting starts. Then it's "Naw, not today."
Jed was probably the greatest dog actor of all time!
@@leeneufeld4140 Heard it said, that the other dogs would wag their tails and ask for pets and want to play but Jed...He'd just sit there and stare. They found him kind of unsettling.
The scene where the dog enters an unknown characters room and then the fade out is awesome. I saw this as a teen with my Dad and that was such a pivotal element to the mystery of the film. So well done for 1982 and the SFX designs were incredible. Scared me a bit at just 14yrs old but I have since re-watched it every year.
Don't know if you know this, but the shadow on the wall is Dick Warlock who was Kurt Russell's stunt double, he also played the shape in Halloween 2

27:24 The Doc saw what will happen if the alien reaches the human population, he is in the process of making sure that won't happen. he destroys the helicopter, so the team can't leave, and the radio, so they won't call for help, and get more people infected. eventually kills the rest of the sled dogs, so they can't use sleds to escape. he seems crazy, and could have told the team what's going down, but he chose violence 😂another great reaction to one of my favs!
I went to see this movie in theatres in 2022 for its 40th anniversary!
It was an enhanced edition with BTS interviews and scenes instead of ads for other movies.

This has been the most fun movie reactions I've seen to this movie. Rob Bottin did 95% of the creature effects and got sick on set and have to be airlifted to hospital because of overworking. The result is easily some of the best creature effects of all time for a movie. The effects were easily award worthy but did not get an award.
I love the post watch banter where BJ spent the whole time trying to blame Asia for his scares/jumps and Asia unable to stop laughing. That was so much fun. Thanks for this.

This movie encompasses why the 80s physical props are the best thing that ever existed. This body horror is done just as well in Anime, I can’t wait for you guys to grow into watching things like “Akira”. Having a deep film lexicon like you guys are building genuinely makes for smarter, more empathetic people. God damn this movie is gross tho 😂 and definitely why it’s in my absolute favorites.
i feel in similar way about Terminator. People may laugh at first part as much as they want, but metal skeleton there was more terrifying than CGI bullshit in Genisys.

The atmosphere, the drab vibe, tension, no bullshit, dryness,music, acting, , and actual physical effects made this movie absolutely one of the greatest horror thriller movies ever made. Other obvious classics, American Warewolf In London, Shining, Event Horizon, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later
Watching Asia peering from behind her splayed fingers was worth the price of admission alone ; What a masterpiece. Set, direction, screenplay, music, and acting, all blended together in a perfect whole!

Friends and I drove into LA to see the opening of Blade Runner but it was sold out. This opened on the same night at the same theater so we in we went.
Imagine a couple hundred people all making essentially the same sounds as Asia and BJ.

Practical effects hit way different, they’re way more creepy & scary than the cgi stuff. Took me forever to work up the courage to watch the first evil dead lol

Blair wasn't infected at first. He was trying to save the world. he knew 1 or more of the team had been simulated, didn't know who. The creepiest part of this whole movie was that freakin Husky!
Just hearing the theme to this movie gets my heart racing! The paranoia is palatable.

This is one of your greatest reactions! The great thing about this movie is that it doesn't hold your hand. It shows the Thing infect someone ONCE and from then on you discover who the Thing is impersonating as soon as the characters know.
Dad watched this with me when I was 13, told me "Do NOT get attached to the dogs."
Yeah I learned that the hard way. Was absolutely devestated to see the pups getting killed!
We will honestly never know who was infected at the end and Carpenter will never say. He recently did an interview and flat out said he will never tell, the whole point at the end is to not be certain who it is.
And that the world is probably doomed.....
Because eventually someone will find their bodies and recover them!! End of civilization as we know it. The only hope we have is believing that neither of the final two survivors is a Thing. And they had successfully destroyed it before they freeze to death. One of the greatest endings in sci-fi history. Self doubt and questioning of everyone throughout the movie to culminate even in the end of still wondering!🎉🎉🎉
But he said the video game was Canon and both were human so...
I used to watch the 1950's version every time it came on tv and was scared out of my mind. I knew if John Carpenter did the remake is was gonna be extra scary. Alien and The Thing have to be the two scariest movies i have ever seen at the theatre. Great reaction, especially Asia, as she was almost laughing in sheer delight, as she was so scared.
Glad to see someone else here is old enough to remember the 1950s version. James Arness (Matt Dillon in the old Gunsmoke TV show) played the monster. 😊
I love how Carpenter paid tribute to one of his favorite films in his movie Halloween. The Thing From Another World was playing in the background as one of the horror movies the kids were watching.
@vickib5579 Another old favorite of mine is "It terror from beyond space". It starred Marshall Thompson from the old TV show Daktari. The creators of Alien give partial credit to the story line as an inspiration for their movie. Both movies had creatures that were extremely to kill, and loved the duct work.

This is definitely 1 of the best Sci-fi movies of all time. The 1982 version with Curt Russell is the best one of the 3 films.
Yeah this one is the first remake of the original "THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD" which was made back in 1955 I believe. While the first one was more suspenseful than "horror" it was still a good movie for it's time. This first remake was an attempt to take off from where the original more or less left off, hence the rectangle cut in the ice near the beginning.
I don't really consider this a remake of the 1950s movie *The Thing from Another World* b/c they are quite different. John Carpenter's *The Thing* is a direct adaptation of the original short story "Who Goes There?" written by John W. Campbell back in the '30s. Carpenter's version stays extremely true to the original story.
Asia, you scared the hell out of me with that jump when Blair put his hand in that guy's face! 😂 Speaking of Blair (before he was finally assimilated), he was sane and human when he was bashing up the copter and all the communication systems. He was trying to save humanity from The Thing! This 1982 movie is a 1970s hangover - all that paranoia!
I think he was already gone when he smashed everything up. Otherwise, how did he get so much time to build the spaceship underground after being shut away?

The remake they did in the 2010s was actually a prequel that ended just where this movie started. Worth checking out.

This movie is a classic, and probably still one of the best horror movies out there. Considering its age, that's saying something. Hope y'all don't have nightmares!! LOL.
Number 1: Norris is the one assimilated by the dog. Number 2: Palmer is the second assimilated. Number 3: You are not infected you are digested and replaced. And Number 4: Both Childs and Mac are human at the end. BECAUSE if only one of them is the thing there is no need to hide at this point and the thing would have assimilated the last remaining human. There is no need to have a conversation with the last human.
There's also that The Thing can split and act on its own accord.
Here's some major horror to think about: If a single Thing survived, it technically could split itself, and regenerate themselves as the crew they assimilated.
13:40 For me, the most unsettling moments in the movie. That "dog" motionlessly staring. Even though we didn't know what it really was, it freaked me out the first time, and still does. It's just too ... still for a dog. It just looks unnatural, which is such a great yet subtle tell that it's something else. Top rate dog actor!
If we're talking straight up horror? This is the GOAT.

Been waiting so long for you guys to watch this!! The undisputed champion of horror, and one of the greatest films to ever exist. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the effects, the acting, the tension, the suspense, the music, the direction, every little detail makes this movie amazing.
Not to mention, that thanks to Carpenter, we got to enjoy the great Keith David for many years.
The newest version is actually the story of the Norwegian camp, and what happened there before Kurt Russell and the others found the dog. Worth a watch after this one for more context ❤
I disagree. The Thing in 2011 attacks in the open as oppose to its established nature of isolating single victims. In 1982 we don't see both Palmer and Norris attacked, and there is an answer to how did the thing get the keys to the blood, it's answered. This mystery is well constructed and there is clues throughout. The 2011 CGI and how dumb The Thing is compared to 1982, discard it. The questions this movie asks is worth keeping it a mystery to the imagination, all opinion, but I'm right.

Few fun bits:
When he poured his whiskey in the computer. The computer was indeed cheating. Somebody went back and checked and it made an illegal move to check mate him.
When the Norwegians were shouting in the beginning of the movie, they are actually spoiling the movie: "Thats not a dog, its a thing!"
Also the beginning when they check on the Norwegian base, its actually the main set after they burned it for the movie climax. They did not have enough money for 2 sets.
This movie is a part of Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy. The movies have no direct connect, but have broadly similar themes.
The other two are Prince of Darkness and In The Mouth of Madness. Both are superb and some of the best horror movies ever made.
Such mindblowing special effects in this movie that still stand the test of time. I knew I was up for a real treat with this reaction video, and I wasn't left disappointed.
