I always like your reviews as they discuss various aspects of each film you review without imposing judgment. My thoughts about this film - The initial set-up worked for me, but the adventure part that followed meandered and didn't get into detail about anything, not even Ranjith's idea against oppression. The myth part was vague and overdone. But, the actual drama started beyond the midway point, where we have the fantastic scene of Thangalaan giving dresses to everybody, followed by the scene where he convinces them to go with him in search of gold. Then, we see the elements of oppression in detail, and the myth portions make more sense. He was meant to be the protector, but he kind of desired for the gold and the land that he was meant to protect. The climax is spectacular and ties everything neatly, and Thangalaan's realization of who he is is a well-written and executed piece of cinema. I liked Parvathy's performance which was outstanding and GV Prakash's music elevated major moments in the film.

As a CHIYAAN VIKRAM fan, I am very proud that he choses this film. The feeling that I got while watching this movie in theatre was incredible.
The making and screenplay is beyond Imagination.
In 2018 I watched the Hindi film PADMAVATI and I got stunned. At that time I thought when I'm going to see this type of film in Tamil.

Really a balanced and beautiful review. I watched this review after watching the Movie. The points about the depth of the questions the movie asks stand out. I agree with the emotional connection; I, too, felt it was flat, especially with the supporting characters. For example, in Sarpatta, I was invested in the world, the characters, and their dynamics, which I missed in this movie. On the other hand, if you invest in Vikram's personal journey and his self-realization, it is very much enjoyable. As Sudhir said, Pa Ranjith is trying a self-discovery through his movies, and I hope he will come with another bang.
Sudhir, you are a thoughtful reviewer. I suggest folks giving it another watch-you might see it differently on a second viewing. In my opinion, Thangalaan has set a new standard, comparable to international films (Django, killers of flower moon)

தங்கலான் தமிழ் சினிமாவின் ஒரு மைல் கல். இந்த படத்தை நான் இன்று பார்த்தேன். சிலர் யூடியூப்பரும் சிலர் திராவிட சங்கிகளும் இந்த படத்தை நல்லா இல்லை என்று சொன்னார்கள். ஆனால் நான் போய் பார்த்தேன். பிரம்மாண்டமான படம் ஏன் இவர்கள் நல்லா இல்லை என்று சொன்னார்கள் என்பது எனக்கு புரியவில்லை. ஆனால் இன்று புரிந்து விட்டது அதில் தூய தமிழ் பேசுகிறார்கள். இவர்களுக்கு தூய தமிழும் தெரியாது. ஆங்கிலமும் தெரியாது. அதில் டேனியல் ஆங்கிலத்தில் பேசியதை அவர் தமிழ் சப்டைட்டில் போடவில்லை அது ஆங்கிலத்தில் தான் வந்தது அதனால் அவர்களுக்கு ஆங்கிலமும் புரியாது. என்னவோ ஏதோ ஆங்கிலம் கீழே சப்டைட்டில் போட்டிருந்தால் இந்த youtubeபர்கள் 200 ரூபாய் சங்கிகளுக்கு க்கு புரிந்து இருக்கும் போல.
I have watched and enjoyed . Not a common Indian movie. It carries heavier value & theme which normally cannot be connected simply because it’s beyond the standard imaginary world. It’s beyond and that’s why I loved it.
