2019 Peugeot 508 Review - Finally! New Motoring

  • Finally, the all new 2019 Peugeot 508. The old 508 saloon has felt tired for a while now, especially since Peugeot introduced the 3008 and 5008. But now, with a new platform, new engines, new gearboxes, new design, new everything, the new 508 is a car that finally feels fresh!
    Note! We got two things wrong... The HDi 160 is also a 2.0 litre, and therefore weighs 1,530kg while the HDi 180 weighs 1,535kg. Peugeot have also said there is a manual mode, although it's no longer on the gear selector as it is in the 3008/5008.

    Unbelievable to see how much better Peugeots are today in comparison to what you could get 10 years ago

    Hello, I did like your review pointing out the good, the not so good and what's to improve. No car is perfect and there is always room for improvement, even for a well-built and well-designed car like the Peugeot 508. And what I also like is that you reviewed the car honestly but, unlike another active reviewer on TH-cam, you did not indulge into some kind of French bashing and I commend you for that! You earned a new subscriber, thanks!

      Hello, and thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. No need to French bash - wherever a car comes from, if it's good it's good, if it's bad it's bad. Thank you for subscribing! SW

    Wonderful car. Peugeot is back in the D segment again. I can speak from more than 4 years of own experience with the i cockpit and say that the seating position is perfect. The i cockpit works almost like a head up display.
    I personally think it was a good decision to offer all models of the 508 only with automatic gearbox except the smallest diesel.
    The cockpit in the 508 looks so good. The same is true with the outside design.
    Good review as always!

      @tinatpasselepoivre 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      one of my gripe with this car is that the roof is too low for mid to tall people in the back, along with the fact that in order to look outside in the rear seat, you have to physically lower your head, not just move it left or rigth. That is rather problematic for taxis or car with chauffeur. Will see if the SW version solves those problem.

    • @christianschumacher6689
      @christianschumacher6689 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tinatpasselepoivre Yes, I agree. This is one of the downsides of the coupe look. Let' s see how this will work out. I would probably go for the SW anyway. Or for the all new 308 SW which will be launched in 2020. I am not a friend of cars that sacrifice too much practicality for styling in general. Hopefully Peugeot has not gone too far in that direction. They probably would argue they had the 5008 for people who need space in the back seat.

    Great review. A gorgeous car and definitely very upmarket interior. While I drive a SUV/crossover I predict that saloons and estates will be on the rise again. I'm currently thinking of one myself!

    • @bighands69
      @bighands69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I seriously do not understand most SUV's. They are not for off road driving and have no real sports aspect to them. They are large and give a high driving position but that is about it. All my SUV's are for off roading.

    • @AndrewKNI
      @AndrewKNI 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers, you're quite right. I only drive one as its easier to get in and out of due to a bad back. Apart from that they have few additional benefits for city dwellers. And as there are so many on the road, its no longer an advantage to be higher up - you can even miss smaller cars in the mirror. But worst of all they are very expensive to buy and run compared to the hatches they are based on, such as the Seat Leon and Ateca. I'm now hankering for a saloon again :-)

    • @AKdsad100
      @AKdsad100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably the last year for the rise of SUV, the sedans will come back for sure. We have an old 407 and new 2008 in the family. This 508 looks like an absolute winner for PSA...

    I agree that new 508 looks superb! But I cannot agree that old 508 looks tired - I'm talking about facelift version. They did well job with facelifting the old 508. I think it will look nice and fresh for few years.
    New 508 has modern dash with lcd displays which is trendy at this moment. However the buttons under the satnav aren't so pretty. Old 508 has nice classic look dash with very pretty and nice dials. The perfect car for me would 508 with new exterior but with old interior :).
    In next generation of 508 you probably won't get manual gearbox and I don't see the reason why would you even want manual gearbox in such car :) ?

    I think Peugeot need to rethink of that 1.6 engines, here in middle east because of the hot weather we really prefer the naturally aspirated engins, so if that 508 got 2.2 liters with 185 horse power it would smash our markets and sell like crazy

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Roux They sold the 508 in the past here but then removed it from the market due to poor sales. This happens often in SA where people will rather spend a bit more to get a C, 3 or A4. Ford also removed the Fusion from our market and Mazda removed the Mazda 6. These cars are too expensive in our market because no one will buy one when you can get a German sedan for not much more with cheaper monthly payments through their financing lease like packages. Also, Peugeot's presence is just not good enough. Barely enough dealerships. They just don't seem committed to our market. Look at how well Renault is doing. And part of that reason is that Renault also sells the Kwid and Sandero here which have given their sales and reputation a massive boost. Coupled with 5 year 120000km warranties across their range and a pretty good dealer network and people will buy. Peugeot's cheapest car here is over R200,000. They don't have a cheap car to compete with the Kwid and Sandero and that doesn't help them at all. They also refuse to extend their warranties. I know of 2 people who chose a Renault or Hyundai over a Peugeot they looked at because Peugeot was offering a pathetic 3 year warranty while Hyundai and Renault was doing 5 years. Then they bring the new 3008 in starting at a catastrophically high price compared to a Rav4 and others etc. Yes it has way more features and is extremely well made. But how do they expect to get a hold in our market when they price like this? Not to mention lesser warranties and an almost non existent dealership network. We have a 2 litre diesel 3008. Only 50,000kms. They offered us such a pathetic trade in value we just can't get the new one. So they too are not even interested in assisting Peugeot owners themselves. They barely sell any cars it seems. And It's their own fault. The product is great but Peugeot SA is just not stepping up. The new 3008 diesel doesn't even come well specced compared to the previous one like we have. Meaning that getting the new diesel will be a downgrade in features. Peugeot literally leaves no choice but to go to another brand. They are losing customers and loyal fans. We have been with them for 12 years. Don't know how much longer we can take. Very sad because their vehicles are simply excellent and far far better than the equivalent Hyundai (which always feels cheap and nasty) and Renault (which rattles off the showroom floor).

      Not thrue. The platform of the current Insignia his completely different from the EMP2 platform of Peugeot-Citroën. In the future surely Opel will use the Peugeot platforms, (in fact the new Grandland uses it), but not the current Insignia, born when Opel was General Motors

      You're right, sorry. 160 is also a 2.0 litre, and therefore weighs 1,530kg and the 180 weighs 1,535kg. And Peugeot have said there is a manual mode although it's no longer on the gear selector as it is in the 3008/5008. Thanks for the heads up!

    • @johnwet6969
      @johnwet6969 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PHILIP BUTOYI typically diesels are best in middle revs. This one is very strong in low/med revs. In 2000rpms you have around 120hp and in 2500 revs around 150hp and full 400nm. So you can drive easy, quietly and smoothly without screaming engine in 5000 and more revs. This is not naturally aspirated petrol engine.

      By Germans? Interior is made by Faurecia, which is a French company with majority sharehold by Peugeot. Faurecia makes interiors for all your 'premium' German brands that lose 90% of their value when guarantee dies lol. Nice try though, I love when people spout shit for no reason like you.

      33K EUR for a Peugeot that offers the same technologies (night vision, semi-autonomous driving...) and confort (piloted suspension, double glazed glass, massaging, heated and cooled seats.....) as a German car but is a lot more beautiful and interesting and costs 10K EUR less....just think about it

    • @sakal88
      @sakal88 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @clementeygun171

      French car designers are considered the best in the world for years .... they work with all major car manufacturers. And Peugeot cars were very often elected European cars of the year !!
      literally every car manufacturer uses large strips of LEDs that are used to mark a style ....just look at mercedes, volvo,jaguar, range rover, bmw, the rear of the new audis.....peugeot (as renault) is just more original and inovative design-wise .

Also the 5th trunk door made out of plastic on 3008, NICE! The price is ridiculous! Old 508 starting at 23K and new at 33K. LOL. Yes, I buy rather a cheaper passat or facelifted mazda 6(thats a beautiful car btw).
