I've been using QB for 20 yrs, currently Desktop Premier 2020. Been getting all the emails about discontinuing but have not paid any attention to them until last week, I figured it was the same 3yr notice as always. Software that used to cost me $450 every 3 yrs, will now cost $800 per year. Insane - I will not do it. Plus I have Enhanced Payroll and merchant services, both of which I cancelled today. So Intuit not only lost a long term customer, but the increased cost plus the $500 annual payroll service, plus the merchant services to the tune of $20/month plus 3.69% on card fees. I do not use any cloud based computing and refuse to store any of my data on someone else's hard drive. So I'll just keep on using my software and find an alternate payroll solution and merchant service. Terrible business plan Intuit, just terrible.

Good for you....I feel exactly the same. I am tired of dealing with bank accounts that are being hacked into, Credit Cards that I thought were secure that security is continuously being called. I am blessed where I live. So far CC services are still done "the old fashioned" way and our banks here in the Virgin Islands still realize that we are not like the "Real World" with all it's "High Technology".....if I have to go back to doing accounting manually, I will. It is called EXCEL

I am on the same boat. Regretfully I went to subscription Desktop version and is costing me annually $800.00. I have to pass the cost to my clients. The one and only reason I continue with QB is for the Enhanced Payroll. Nevetheless I a looking into third party payroll services and go back to the last QB Accountant Version prior to subscription. I am a CPA (20+ years) and have been using QB for even longer. One of the drawbacks to QBOnline is that it is hard to create customized reports if you need something a bit out of the ordinary. Not so much a problem with QBDestop. And some clients have been using QBD since 2003 without upgrading. Granted they are not interfacing with their bank online, but QBD without support means that you can't call QB for help (no more talking to India). This is not as big a deal as might be supposed since there are so many QB Pro Advisors and/or QB practitioners available to help with your particular issues. I just hate paying each month for QBO which in my opinion is not as good as QBD. I am the CFO of two S corps and have been using QBO for more than 5 years. Yes, QB has improved QBO but I would switch back to QBD in a heartbeat.

Bite the bullet. Hell no. I am a former CPA who has been using QB since it was DOS screens.I now do bookkeeping for one little client and my personal bookkeeping on Quickbooks desktop. I have NEVER used their support. I only upload banking transactions. I will go back to handwritten ledgers like we did in the 70s before I pay almost $700 for an annual subscription. They are telling me that my subscription expires next month September 2023. Will I still be able to email invoices and statements after my subscription expires? I don't use any support. My needs are very basic, I just need to email statements and invoices. All my parts and supplies I keep as hard copies so I don't input that information. I just had to make the decision a few days ago of whether to renew desktop or make the plunge into QBO. They are offering short term discounts on the QBO and enhanced payroll, but when you take those discounts away, Desktop w/payroll was actually cheaper. I was told with my upgrade I will have support for a full year and in September they will decided whether or not they will continue to offer Desktop. I will stay with Desktop as long as possible. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. 🤷‍♀️

    • @JamieTrull

My PC has a notice on it now saying that it's been all set up for me and I have 3 days to prepare! It mention's having my phone connected as well. I was going to try it today as I have some catching up to do with data entry and I really don't know if it's Office 2016 being pushed to the live version is what this is about. What ever it is is going to take time and I hope no more money as these companies seem to think that I have an endless supply of both!

So are you saying that desktop is going to go away completely? and I heard that QBO cannot do some of the functions that desktop enterprise can do- like bins, lot tracking, Bill of materials and some of the purchase order/ vendor management functions. Are the only options for that to buy a separate inventory system to work with QBO? like SOS or Fishbowl?

I understand that the only constant is change. I also accept the premise that at $300 for a three-year run, Quickbooks desktop was under priced for what it does. But it looks like this change to online is going to make my Quickbooks cost multiply by a factor 1500%. That’s not a typo, I’ll be paying 15 times what I’m used to paying. For reference, this is the equivalent of a $6.00 Starbucks latte going to $90. A $300 a week grocery bill going to $4500. And a $40,000 automobile costing $600,000. If I was in business school right now, trying to get an MBA, I would do a deep dive into this, it’s such a great example of what happens when competition goes away. Having said all that, Jamie, you clearly seem to be the best informed person I’ve seen on TH-cam about all of this. Will definitely be purchasing through your link.

What do you know about QBO and multiple entities? (For example, the property management company that I do bookkeeping for has several (like 8-10) entities with different bank accounts, AND different Quickbooks Desktop files, to keep it all seperated. Do you have knowledge of whether or not this situation QBO would fee us up the rear by requirements for each entity? Truth be told, I am MUCH more likely to choose between sticking with QBDesktop for as long as I can, and heavily investigating alternatives like Freshbooks/Xero, but the fact that ONE entity does payroll makes it complicated and expensive. Truth be told, I am will likely (next) research how I might be able to handle our Payroll through a separate option and stick with QBDesktop 2020 and have my Payroll be clunky.

Personally I don’t think they’re going to get rid of desktop anytime soon. Ultimately I think they’ll probably end up selling it to another company. There are still some QSP’s that will sell the pro version of desktop, but they cannot “advertise“ it officially. I do agree there’s a push to get folks to move to the online version. There’s also more of a focus on the Mid Market product, the advanced subscription level. I just hope some of the smaller businesses don’t get left behind. If they do, then I’m here for them!

Don't bother. They charge exorbitant fees for each business you put online. I currently have 3 business accounts on QBO and another 4 on Quickbooks desktop. Desktop is better and when they quit supporting online banking I will find another provider (not QBO). Plus the QBO interface sucks. It is hard to find basic stuff (like online banking links ) you have to get there through "Transactions". Mind blowingly bad... and I'm an IT guy.

Thanks for the explanation Jamie. Perhaps I missed it, but does your affiliation also have any discounts for desktop? I've noticed Etsy sellers are around 50% discount for the version. I'd rather purchase from someone like you though at a higher price.

I only do the basic features. No employees, no payroll, no banking. They tell me my 2016 desktop Licence number no longer would work and they keep pushing this online QB. it involves a monthly charge whereas my original desktop was a one time payment. Are there any other programs with basic features that are available ? QB or another equivalent program ? These QB people hold you hostage by forcing you to pay for an upgraded service that some small business owners dont need. Help

Almost the same monthly fee as ALL Adobe Creative Cloud Apps combined! As expensive as Adobe CC is, it at least pays for itself (or makes me a profit) if I use it. QB is just a time and money suck in order to pay taxes. Been using QB since 1996 and the cloud version would not fit my needs. As a freelancer, I don't even use 95% of what QB offers anyway. Paying about $10/mo for a Mac Desktop version would be about right for what I need as I have free alternatives if necessary. There is not a single feature in QB that I use that has changed since 1996. If I were an accountant and using it for clients my needs would be far greater. Based on what my CPA charges me, a QB subscription is nothing - he uses to it make money.

I've had it with QuickBooks TBH. There is no reason to be forced to pay for a program you own each & every year. Adobe did the same thing & I switched to Affinity. I have ZERO ISSUE abandoning companies that try to extort their customers like this. I will do my own book keeping by hand on a stone tablet if necessary just to spite them.
