Hey Jamie, your link for your exclusive Quickbooks Online tools no longer appears to be working. When I click on the option to start the free trial for the Simple Start, it opens a message saying "We couldn't find the page" and it redirects me to the regular Quick Book plans. Did your link update/change?
@@brandyherrington2424 Hey Brandy! Sorry I'm just now seeing this - did you get it to work? I just tried and it seems to be working just fine for me, it takes me to a "create an intuit account" screen.
I switched from Go Daddy Bookkeeping to Quickbooks Online and it is very complicated especially when trying to import ebay and etsy charges and use it for schedule c tax forms. I was told by QB consultant to formulate my chart of accounts according to schedule C but when I do auto imports of my ebay and etsy charges, the way they are set up is so convoluted that I can't easily put them in the schedule c categories. I understand that double entry bookkeeping is more accurate but I'm a very small proprietorship, don't make much sales so I don't know if it's worth the hassle and paying someone to help me figure it out is also very expensive. I'll be sticking to spreadsheets for now.
I tried to use it for a single member s corp and it was just a bundle of frustration. In my opinion whoever is using self employed and is happy can get by using mint or just a spread sheet (requires manual entry).
I am a sale representative for a company, I pay my own expenses out of pockets ie: car repairs, gas etc.. I also have a rental property. I am not interested in starting a business, and of course I don't have a business bank account to keep business and person separate. What would you recommend using to keep my book keeping accurate?
In the eyes of the IRS, you do have a business if you are a 1099 contractor like a sales rep. So it is still recommended to have a business bank account (you can check out my recommendations for free ones here: jamietrull.com/banking). As far as bookkeeping, if you don't want to pay for an ongoing software, I do have a low one-time cost Profit and Loss statement you can use to stay or organized for taxes here: jamietrull.com/profitloss
Hi Jamie! I've been reviewing QBSE...I have a lawn care business (S-Corp). Which QB Platform would you recommend that will generate quarterly taxes due, track expenses, suggest deductions, and allow me to accurately file my business taxes? Can ANY of this be achieved, via QB, without an accountant? Any advice you can offer would be sincerely appreciated! (If you are still on TH-cam)
I synced the bank account to the quickbooks but i see in most of the cases the entries came in as received deposits instead of spent expense. What should i do to fix please????
For a very small self-employed sole proprietor who only needs to track expenses for tax purposes, QB Self Employed seems adequate. I am such individual currently using QB Simple Start using your logic. After several years of using the true accounting version, I have found I never really needed a balance sheet, or unique customization, or the potential to grow bigger. I am switching to QB Self Employed, the glorified spread sheet.
I think the key is knowing whether you plan to grow or change entity types. Even a a self-employed sole prop, eventually it could make sense to become an S Corporation to save money on taxes, in which case you would need a balance sheet, customization, etc. However, if you know that isn't something you'll need any time soon, then go for it!
I am like Javier. It's just me, sole proprietor. I only need to track income and expenses. I will never grow, don't want to. I only got my DBA because the person I work for didn't want to 'hire' me as an employee. So I am getting the tax benefit for myself since I get no employee benefits. I know how to use Quicken but it's ridiculously expensive now. I'm really looking for a Quicken alternative that can give me expense category totals at the end of the year to make tax prep easier. I'd like to also have the ability to also have a 'cash' account to add those to the expense category totals.
@@dougdoug9223 I ended up using CountAbout. It's very similar to Quicken, you can link accounts and download transactions. It's a less expensive alternative to Quicken
I've used TurboTax for years, gathering all the info myself and then feeding it into the program. Works well for me. This year I thought I upgrade, so I got QBSE and figured it would do all the work for me. WRONG. A nightmare. I spent more time, and way too much interaction with barely competent "customer service" types whose accents were thicker than thick trying to get QBSE to download properly into TurboTax than I ever spent doing all that data collection myself. Not a fan.
I fully understand your plight and have just gone through the same issue... It is infuriating that TurboTax is not paired with all the QuickBooks systems!! Let's face it - besides keeping things organized for good business oversight - we do this so that our financial exposure and accountability to the IRS is seamless! So @JamieTrull I have been using QBO for several years and have used an accountant for the tax work - but he is retiring and I have wanted to file my self...
I totally respect your opinion and you gave some compelling points. I actually like QBO Self-Employed for basic self-employed business, Sch C Businesses and Gig workers. I had a client who was Sole Proprietor, Sch C and he used his debit card at least 20 times a day and some of his purchases were personal and some for business. There would be 10 purchases for coffee per day. I like the feature where you can setup a bank rule and record these transactions automatically and correctly for business or personal and being able to figure out their quarterly estimated payments
So even for gig workers, I think its best for them to keep business and personal separate, though I know not all do this. However it is against banking regulations to be using a personal bank account for business transactions, and I know people who have actually had their accounts frozen by the bank for doing this. I'm in the "better to be safe than sorry" camp! Also....that's a lot of coffee...I'd be bouncing off the walls haha!
@@JamieTrull This is region specific. In Australia, the same account can be used for 'sole-proprietors' . It is not recommended by the Australian taxation office, as it can be messy, but it is perfectly allowable.
I agree, @rcippa2588. I guess you could call me a "gig" worker just because I lack some traditional business structures such a separate business account but I find QBSE acceptable for what I need which is mainly to separate expenses, track mileage and do a little invoicing (for a different business) for my Accountant. I definitely think you need to be way more into accounting then I would probably ever want to be to understand even half of the reasons QBO would be better. Personally I hate that everything including graphic design programs are all cloud-based now and you don't have a choice in that. Back in the day I used to have plain old Quickbooks software on my computer - it was too complicated for what I actually needed in my past business where I incidentally didn't need any milage tracking but I learned a little more about bookkeeping every year and got better at it. I felt totally trapped and resentful having to choose between the the different current versions when I had to switch to online-only because I was well aware of how limited QBSE was but when I lost my entire business overnight during the shut-down in the first months of the pandemic and started my whole life over not even sure the new business would be sustainable I seriously could barely even afford QBSE and the milage tracking was important in my new business model so without any promo discounts it wasn't even a question. I know it will be hard to switch this business over to another version but I am now on the verge of filing for disability/retirement anyway so it's not strong enough of an incentive to switch now as if I would be expanding or dramatically changing my business again anytime soon.
It depends on you! If you can manage all the accounts in QB and are ok with manually moving balances around just on paper, that can be an option. I've found most business owners like to use bank balance accounting though where they can log in at any time and instantly see what their available cash balance to spend is. Relay also allows you to set up an actual savings account and make some interest for longer-term business savings. Personally, I prefer to track my balances in Relay and feel it allows for more automations and ease. Plus, it's free (and you get $50 after depositing your first $100 if you use my link to sign up! jamietrull.com/relay )
Is there software that I can just do a one-time payment and the software is mine? I do not want constant upgrade messages, sales message, etc? I just want software that I can have for my VERY small business.
There may still be some older versions of software out there that you could be a single license for but unfortunately, I've seen most software now move to a cloud service that requires a subscription.
Most accounting softwares are moving to the cloud. You could get something like Quickbooks Desktop but even that is now requiring annual upgrades to use. Companies are moving toward repeat billing vs. one time, in part to make up for the fact that they are supporting users with customer service, etc.

Are there any tips for transferring over data from one to the other? Also this year I have elected to go from LLC to SCorp would you still recommend QuickBooks Plus?
Yes QB Plus is great for S Corps! Its what I use for my S Corp. You definitely don't want to use QB Self-employed for an S Corp as it won't track your balance sheet/basis the way you need to for tax time. As far as moving over, its not required can be helpful to use a bookkeeper who can help you with the the transition to make sure everything is set up properly. @@kcculp6430 I previously worked as a Virtual CFO for several small businesses and am a CPA with lots of experience in QuickBooks. My business is now fully education based.
@@JamieTrull I just think that QuickBooks has numerous shortcomings for CPA / Bookkeepers who want to run an efficient Write-up business. For example, it does not integrate with a Fixed Asset program that automatically posts depreciation expense. It does not integrate with an Amortization Program that automatically posts Interest Income / Expense. It does not have real journal entries in the format of XX-100 and there are no standard or reversing entries. Unless they have fixed this problem, the Bank Reconciliation program does not reconcile the Bank Statement to the General Ledger, it reconciles the Bank Statement to the Bank Statement. It does not completely integrate with the client's accounting system. For example, after the CPA / Bookkeeper posts adjustments to their client's books, there is no guarantee that the client can't change these entries. Finally, there is no integrated checklist for the bookkeepers to follow step by step procedures established by their supervisor.
I have been testing self employed for the past few months, look like I cannot reconcile the accts. Or at least I cannot figure out how to reconcile- so far not a fan either. I am also disheartened to hear that if I upgrade that I will have to start over again. Thank you for this information. Helfpul.
Hi! thank you for your video. I have a question concerning Profit and Loss Statement. For example I need to give the government's Health Insurance an update on my income for 2022, this is the first year I am totally as self employed. My question is: the total amount of my income report should be before or after taxes? That is my TOTAL INCOME minus TOTAL EXPENSES/DEDUCTIONS or TOTAL INCOME minus TOTAL EXPENSES/DEDUCTIONS minus TAXES? Should I apply any On Net Profit percentage 92.35% to Net Profit? Thank you
Hey Jamie, I currently use QB selfemployed, If I switch to QB version will it still automatically track my mileage? What about my personal expense self employed has tracked, will it still integrate and carry over seamlessly? I'm a real estate agent btw... I do plan on incorporating soon, should I wait till Jan 1st 2024 ??
Hey there! Yep, all QBO levels track mileage. As far as personal expenses, I would recommend fully separating business and personal before instituting QBO, and then only linking your business account with QBO. That's also best practice and required if you are an LLC to make sure you keep your legal protections. The process won't be seamless though since QBO is on a different platform than QBSE. It may make sense to start a new year in QBO, and spend the time over the next few months getting everything separated out so you don't have to worry about you personal expenses. Hope that helps!
I am a suite based salon owner with only myself as an employee. I am currently switching to S Corp. For QuickBooks, do I need to add the payroll addition? Or which bookkeeping level would you recommend?
I've never used it but will put it on my list! One key question is whether you can generate a Balance Sheet from it. If not, it isn't using true double-entry accounting.
The fact that QB STILL don't have a function for the Self-Employed to enter their Private Pension (SIPP) contributions as an expense is shocking. I've seen people asking them to add it for 5 years now.
@@JamieTrull thank you! After getting a new Mac, I'm also switching from an old desktop Quickbooks version to something new. And thanks for providing those great quickbooks deals through your website! I appreciate it!
Converting from Desktop to online will create problems. I would do the trial version to see if u like it. Reports that u r used to will be gone. With conversion…everything will be thrown in the wrong accounts and 7yrs of what I reconciled was a mess. Desktop version was okay so I continued to use it and spent hours fixing part of the online version and then I stopped. If u have to use online I would just starting at the new year just journal entry info re-enter vendors cust info and open items and pull-up desktop to refer to previous transactions. I have decided to continue to use desktop but payroll feature /support / sync bank stops May 31st. I’m probably going to put on a desktop that I will never connect to internet…if it lets me. Please don’t blame your employees for everything being a mess it isn’t their fault and they might not be able to fix it. Good luck.
I got QBO Simple Start exactly a month ago, and signed up through the 50% off 3 month subscription. After making that first mistake, and realizing I need the plus version (it turns out Simple Start does not include billable expenses), can I switch to your subscription offer?
Unfortunately its just for brand new QB users. However, if you don't need the work you've already done and are ok with starting fresh, you can likely use a different email to sign up for a fresh account using my link to snag the discount!
Do you still have a link for QBO I wonder which one you think I should consider being scorp. I am changing accountants and my current accountant has me riding off his QBO and just share in monthly cost but the other accountants say I need my own and to invite them to access
I usually recommend people have their own - that way you have no issues with transitions, etc. That said, my QBO link unfortunately only works for new clients, so you'd have to start a whole new company file to use it. Your old accountant should be able to transfer it to you for billing, but unfortunately, any preferred pricing they have will roll off and you'll be at retail price.
hey Jamie! thanks fot your channel and your videos about QB at this point i have a problem! they dont want give me the promotion you offer in your videos! they said because i take the trial i can get the discount! HELPPPPP!
Hey there! So the reason may be that the trial period elapsed before a credit card was put on file. It's a frustrating thing, but if the trial period elapses without a credit card, they remove the discount! I try to warn people about this as much as I can. If you haven't yet done much in your file, you may want to sign up for a new account under a new email address with my link!!
They bait and switched me on my tax return with turbo tax and also didnt work. And then lost my milesge randomly for seemingly no reason on (quickbooks self employed) intuit is trash
This video would be a bit more credible if Jamie wasn’t “pumping” her QB affiliate pricing every 30 seconds. To date, QB Self-Employed has worked fine for my little advisory business.
I have a QB Self-employed link affiliate price as well, but I don't recommend it for most businesses so I don't talk about it. I only recommend the things I use and love, and want to give everyone the opportunity to save money on the things I recommend!
Great video and very informative. My only negative is the constant zooming in and out on the video, it was that distracting I had to listen and not watch. You’re right about the limited functionality of QBSE, think I’ll be changing in the future, I say changing because you can’t upgrade, missed a trick there didn’t they!!
Hi, I HATE quickbooks but it is NOT a spreadsheet software. If there was a better system I'm sure we would all be using it. Moral of the story: Skip Quickbooks.
you speak too much from your own educated and certified knowledge of the topic which is more than the average business owner or person. Plus you are going off your own 13 months because of your product? This is a sales pitch from an a CPA. Not a review from an average business owner. next
Sorry you feel that way. I teach small business owners everyday how to make more profit in their business, so I always try to create my videos with them in mind.
Unfortunately not, but its pretty easy to enter in the info yourself from the reports that QBO provides. The reason is because QBO allows for customization of accounts, so your accounts may not directly map to turbotax in the same way self-employed does (since self-employed doesn't let you customize)

Here is an article if you want to DIY it! quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/banking/how-do-i-switch-from-qb-self-employed-to-qb-small-business-will/00/822761
@@JamieTrull thank you so much -;you rock 🙌
Hi, I have a full time job and a small business renting out my rooms in my primary residence. I have no employees. What would you recommend?
Great question, I would love to answer that for you on my next live show! You can submit this question here for me to answer: www.JamieTrull.com/TH-cam
Anything she has to recommend will likely cost the whole of any profits you might make renting out your rooms. lol
Jamie - What accounting program do you use for client write-up work?
Thanks!
I don't have clients - so I suppose none ;)
@@JamieTrull I don't understand how you can give advice on Accounting Software when you have no accounting clients and do no write-up work???
Helfpul.
I'm glad this could be helpful 🤗
Thank you great INFORMATION...I will check out quickbooks simple start I need it for my small business
You're welcome! So glad it was helpful!
Does quickbooks online connect to a business credit card and business bank account ?
Yes it does
Hi! thank you for your video.
Thank you
I like QB self employed for what I do but I do wish there where some added features to bump it up a little but not make it simply start.
It can be tough to find the perfect solution for sure since every business is different!
@@JamieTrull thank you!!! U rock
I am a suite based salon owner with only myself as an employee. I am currently switching to S Corp. For QuickBooks, do I need to add the payroll addition? Or which bookkeeping level would you recommend?
Definitely check out this playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLB3HgjTThlbpYIwRraYq0mDXi77jBHWQh.html&si=nj4p--VOQPU9TXkO
What about Zoho?
I've never used it but will put it on my list! One key question is whether you can generate a Balance Sheet from it. If not, it isn't using true double-entry accounting.
The fact that QB STILL don't have a function for the Self-Employed to enter their Private Pension (SIPP) contributions as an expense is shocking. I've seen people asking them to add it for 5 years now.
I would keep asking them for this update!
This information was helpful since I have to convert from the Desktop version and decide on which online version to use for my small business.
I'm SO glad this was helpful! 💛
@@JamieTrull thank you! After getting a new Mac, I'm also switching from an old desktop Quickbooks version to something new. One of the things I really wanted was to be able to customize my income and expense accounts - it helps me get a better idea of what's working or not. And now I know self-employed is not for me!
What’s your recommendation on llc self employed? QuickBooks has my books all messed up and I’m panicking to get it fixed so I can do my taxes
What did you go with? Curious as I need to decide on a system and I am LLC also.
@@caitlinboylerealtor I’m LLC self employed also which one did you guys end up going with?
Looks like it's time for me to upgrade!
Thank you 🙏 so much ❤
My pleasure!
hey Jamie! thanks fot your channel and your videos about QB at this point i have a problem! they dont want give me the promotion you offer in your videos! they said because i take the trial i can get the discount! HELPPPPP!

Thank you! 😊
Quick Books self employed is perfect for me. Other systems just do not work for me.
I'm so glad it works for you! 😊
I’m still trying to get the $193 per year. 🤦🏾♂️

Its not available to all countries, Quick books support is also poor.
While informative, objectivity is not clear when the review is used to promote competing alternative.
With lots of different Quickbooks options, I do prefer some over others.
Hi, I HATE quickbooks but it is NOT a spreadsheet software. If there was a better system I'm sure we would all be using it. Moral of the story: Skip Quickbooks.
Its definitely not for everyone, you have to find the right solution for you :)
Quick book online is horrible 😤 avoid it!!!!
Self employed is being phased out May 2023
I haven't seen this anywhere. Where did you see this?
I HATE Quickbooks. It is easy to embezzle with it. So be careful who uses it for you. It is way too complicated.
Sorry to hear that. There is definitely not a one fits all solution for everyone.
you speak too much from your own educated and certified knowledge of the topic which is more than the average business owner or person. Plus you are going off your own 13 months because of your product? This is a sales pitch from an a CPA. Not a review from an average business owner. next
Sorry you feel that way. I teach small business owners everyday how to make more profit in their business, so I always try to create my videos with them in mind.
doesnt recommend quick books, offers $47 crappy spreedsheet instead to make money off you lol
A spreadsheet is a good alternative if you need something simple and cheap for your business. That is all :)
Whoa! Slow Down, Please.
thankfully there is a button for that! (Settings > Playback Speed)
Does Quickbooks Online offer integration to Turbotax like Quickbooks self employed does?
Unfortunately not, but its pretty easy to enter in the info yourself from the reports that QBO provides. The reason is because QBO allows for customization of accounts, so your accounts may not directly map to turbotax in the same way self-employed does (since self-employed doesn't let you customize)
FAN>TAS>TIC. That was so clear, honest, friendly, and engaging! Rare air. Thank you so much! You've saved me a lot of time.
Glad it helped! Your welcome
