This was about the time we started losing all of our silent movie stars and to see Lillian being honored brought tears to my eyes. No modern actor or actress will ever be as big in my eyes and heart as Lillian Gish,Mary Pickford and the other silent legends .
Me too - I wish I had appreciated them all much more when I was a child in the 80s, I used to watch their films on Saturday afternoons on BBC2, they would have a double bill, but I don't think I questioned if they were still alive, I assumed that they were I suppose but maybe I thought that the 1920s and 30s, 40s were so long ago that these people were distant memories, but the 1980s wasn't that long after the 1920s, 30s and 40s - but this is the decade where they did start to slowly leave the world, and that is a very sad thought.
Having just watched a slew of outstanding Buster Keaton silent films, my search had taken me to 1919's Broken Blossoms or the Yellow Man and the Girl• with Lillian Gish as Lucy Burrows. I have never felt such sorrow for a girl who fell victim to such a drunken and abusive father --- heart 💔wrenching so much that i needed to know more about the girl who feared in silence for her life. It's no wonder she deserved a Life time achievement with her incredible talent. A true legend and over 100 years ahead of her time. Thank you for posting this inspiring tribute to the amazing actress and wonderful person who, by getting a living, gave a life. 🙏🥲
I was very pleasantly surprised that they played an extended excerpt from “Night of the Hunter.” She was superb in that movie. And hearing Robert Mitchum pay his respects was also a treat.
and he was not one for Hollywood ceremonies. I don't thing there are many Mitchum speeches like this one out there. He did seem to be slightly inebriated, but what he said was as much to the point, and as elegantly stated, as anything else said on that evening.
It’s so fitting that they used some of Carl Davis’s composition for the Hollywood documentary series in this. Lilian Gish was truly the last great spokeswoman for American silent cinema.
Lillian Gish was one of my favourite old time silent screen actress as well as Mary Pickford.Even As She Aged She Still Had That Young Look in her.Rest In Peace Lillian Godbless You Amen Amen🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋💖💖💖🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You can see and feel the energy and life force being channeled by this frankly elderly (by age) woman who will never be old. She said it: "We're still children playing make believe" and she demonstrates it and carries it with her everywhere. I thank her for her life, her art, and for inspiring me to enthusiastically dive fully into life every day.
It's hard to believe that's from 40 years ago. This really was the end of Hollywood. I met both Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. and Lillian Gish at separate times. Fairbanks was really a charming and down to earth man and Ms. Gish seemed like she was from another century - very formal, but kind. Her speech at the end was perfect for today's situations.
I first saw this video on television back in 1984/85 in the Philippines!!! At that time I had no idea who Lillian Gish was !!! And then in the early 2000s, I saw another video about her entitled: "Lillian Gish: The Actor's Life for Me Trailer" !!! the video opened with the phrase - "She was there at the dawn of the movies" !!! Indeed !!! She was a pioneer of motion pictures and a great one at that !!!
It's astounding that over 50 years, the AFI Life Achievement has only been awarded to only 11 women (surely women are responsible for more than 22% of film's advancement as an art form): Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, Barbara Stanwyck, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, Shirley MacLaine, Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton.Julie Andrews, Nicole Kidman.
I love near the end of her speech where she says We have a boogie man which is Russia and they have a bookie man which is America. Let Them Put It On Film And End The Discussion on That Way👍.She was a Lady of Great Words. And before talkies she talked with her expression on her face and eyes.Godbless you Lillian you will and always be my favourite silent screen idle. You are now gone since this honour to you but your not forgotten Godbless you Amen. 🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🦋🦋🦋🦋🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹💖💖💖💖💖🕊💖🙏🕊🦋
They didn't give that life achievement award to John Wayne, to Robert Mitchum, to Burt Lancaster, to Bing Crosby, to Frank Sinatra, to Charlton Heston, to Charlie Chaplin, to Cary Grant, to Olivia de Havilland, to Jean Arthur, to Jean Simmons, to Maureen O'Hara, to Deborah Kerr... Next thing we knew was that is was given to some undeserved honorees like Steve Martin, Nicole Kidman, George Clooney...
Hanoi Jane. Ah well, that gives the game away doesn't it? BTW Bing Crosby died when only Ford, Cagney, Welles, Wyler and Davis had received the award. If you think he deserved it over those titans you are a cinematic idiot. Apart from being a bitter old right-winger.

Tears to my eyes, too.

Im so jealous, i wouldve loved to have met her.
She remains the greatest actress in the history of American film.
Love that they used the late Carl Davis’ music from the show HOLLYWOOD to play her onstage when collecting her award.
Wow to see all of these celebrities, so many now gone.
The era of true movie stars. Now there is only celebrities.
Gish had class, unlike most of the people leaving comments here.
She was great in THE WHALES OF AUGUST. I think that was her last film.
She stared with Bette Davis. Excellent movie!!!!!

The second video was actually entitled ""Lillian Gish: The Actor's Life for Me" !!!

Even more astounding that they are all white women.
may be men did more and were better at it, not getting the nod because they have a pair.
Nicole Kidman, are they kidding us? When the AFI has not yet recognized Glenn Close, Jodie Foster or Sally Field, to name but three worthy actresses!
Thank you for sharing!

Who else loves watching the great Hollywood series narrated by James Mason
Just beautiful
Most silent films had music played at the theater….sometimes a piano sometimes a full orchestra 🎉
She was exquisite
Wonderful era🎉❤😊
They did not give this award to Errol Flynn. He was the best of his generation and a really great actor.
yes and Marlene Dietrich?
This award was given for the first time in 1973. Errol Flynn had passed away 14 years before, in 1959.
Errol Flynn was an alcoholic and preyed on minors.
Class ❤❤❤❤
Why wasn’t Lillian the FIRST recipient? Gish was there from the beginning .Hollywood is so fucking tarted jeez
You're right Ginger, it should've been Lillian instead of John Ford when the award was first given in 1973
Why do you have to CURSE (fucking)
thank you for sharing!!! Richard Thomas is awesome! 40:20

Agree.those guy do not deserve it.
Carl Davis is The Best !!!
Any more please specials
I can't be the only one wondering what's that stick in her hair. Anyone know?
It is a hairpin. A way to put your hair in an updo.
Wow to think Eva Marie outlived Lillian.
She's living now
Present 100years old
Lilian was a lot older
@harnekkallah2656 You are wrong, brainless. Lillian Gish died before her 💯th birthday while Eva Marie Saint celebrated her 💯th birthday.
Eva Marie Saint was decades younger.
This is krishna Murthy
