screamo and its microgenres are, by a margin as wide as the observable universe, the most creatively-inclined and progressive hardcore subgenres. its a truly special musical movement that most people wont for even a single second divert their attention towards as an unfortunate result of its name becoming a colloquialism for any music with screamed vocals. the skramz renaissance that began suddenly around 2018/2019 and is reaching its peak now in the mid 2020s is beautiful; skramz is finally being appreciated as the truly underappreciated art form that it is.
@christopheroftheplanetearth dude thanks I have been arguing forever skramz is the most versatile, creative, structurally interesting form of music to come out of hardcore. You got bands like orchid and inhumanity which are very rooted in grind and powerviolence, bands like loma prieta run the gambit from early stuff being pretty standard screamo, to mathcore, ro post rock to hardcore punk to whatever the song love is lol. Actually I think mathrock and post rock is probably the most commonly used but there is a lot you can do with that. Then you have circle takes rhe square which is basically expiremental punk, math grind, shoegaze, indie, post rock, sludge, doom, with the best lyrics any band has ever written and amazing schizophrenic speed and vocals. Literally my favorite band for 20 years now.
I've compiled some of my personal fav riffs for anyone wanting to add to their repertoire. Portraits of Past - "Bang Yer Head" Jeromes Dream - "The Monologue of The Century" Angel Hair - " Origin of The Species" Ckikatat Ikatowi - "Too Simple" Usurp Synapse - [untitled] the fourth untitled track and the last track overall on their split with Jeromes Dream (the split is titled "An Aspirin, An X-Ray") Funeral Diner - "Borne Upon My Shield"
bang yer head is one of the most legendarily revolutionary songs in the entire genre, and portraits of past are who id consider the progenitors of post-screamo (the fusion of post-rock and shoegaze with screamo), which was the predominant sound in screamo for like the entirety of the 2000s that met its end just before emoviolence had its little renaissance in the early 2010s. theyre a seriously underappreciated band that are often overlooked by the average skramz fan imo. theyre beyond exceptional, and i often forget just how ahead of their time they were. bang yer head does not sound like it was written in 1993, but it was and thats amazing in itself.
@@nothingissacrosanct I feel you. One of my fav bands from the Myspace post-hardcore era from the late 00s is Lead Hands (back then known as Decoder) and you can draw a straight line from Portraits of Past to that one and only album Lead Hands put out.
holy hell this shit is lit I really want emo to be the new genre I just explore the fuck out of cuz damn are all these riffs popping off (especially I am Nietzche)
Funeral For a Friend - The Art of American Football Thrice - Deadbolt My Chemical Romance - Thank You For The Venom Saosin - Seven Years Silverstein - Giving Up From First To Last - My Heart, Your Hands Senses Fail - Rum Is For Drinking, Not Burning Alexisonfire - Pulmonary Archery Armor For Sleep - Dream To Make Believe The Used - A Box Full of Sharp Objects Those would be my picks!
I would like to see some La quiete stuff in a list of "real screamo. If you don't know them, listen to "la fine non è la fine" album, screamo at it's finest.
This sound defined my teenage years. I couldn't understand what I was hearing then. I wish somebody had shown me 7ths, tritones, other dissonant intervals, double stops. This style, late 90s through early-mid 00s, was more jazz and metal in its inflection. Not to talk shit on 'kids today', but the emo revival stuff which to me is more pop punk influenced, which is fine, it's a different sound, but not really my thing because of the lack of dissonance.
I'm not such a fan of labels, particularly ones that lable whether or not a specific thing is real or not, I do guess it helps with finding styles and whatnot though.
Well the "real screamo" label is different from other "real" genres. Like people who say "this is REAL punk" or "this is REAL rap music" do so because theyre elitist. Screamo fans do so because the label has long since been co-oped by record labels as a marketing term. Most people who have heard the term "screamo" think its just the name for any music that has screaming in it.
Bro Suis La Lune, Iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryearbook, boy problems, I feel like i'm the only human being who knows of this music. I still haven't found a band that captures raw emotion like Suis La Lune and Iwrotehaikus, if anyone knows music on that level lmk.
Screamo has some of the most creative riffage honestly
It doesn't
@@ChadKingOfficialthen what does?

Orchid is considered "emoviolence" (same with pg99) a mix of skramz and powerviolence
