Good testing as long as you keep it consistent it makes for some good results and competition....Definitely not any black and white cut and dry testing that I know of but when all said and done it makes for some good and interesting vids so nice job....Good stuff...

Check out the Edge-On-Up sharpness test device from BESS. It´s like a kind of scale which measures the sharpness of a blade by cutting a tiny wire on a scale. That´s maybe helpfull to your question. Regards Torsten

Yes. I’m aware of it. I see a lot of people using them. I heard it gets pricey to buy the little testers after a bit

Yah if you test them the same, it'll be the correct outcomes... but i was talking, load up the pressure then pull it through, not push it through, when I cut thick rope, I like to loadup the pressure then watch the edge blow through given I was standing up and pulling on both ends of the rope

The issue is where you push thru you may not be using the same part of the blade to cut paper. You should mark your blade on left and right and do your test between that. Then cut paper using the same area.

You could try cutting cardboard as another option, since that's probably what most people cut more often than rope?!! However, I think your rope cutting method is sound enough to prove your point. I'm happy with how you do your testing, anyway.👍 I hope you feel better soon. 🙏 Thanks for sharing, take care and Cheers!

I like the way you test you are very unbiased and not pushing a certan steel and saying it no longer cuts

I slowly slice thin slivers of phone book paper curling like a feather stick. I’ve lost the ability to do that with 1095 just slicing paper.

      Like the edge went dull?

    • @dlrmon1

I re-ground a Tops BOB to a real Scandi edge. The edge angle was somewhere stupid under 15 degrees per side. It was scary sharp. As I was playing with it I sliced up a piece of printer paper and when I went back to the phone book paper it no longer could curl the paper as it did before. First time I used the knife on wood it destroyed the edge...now it lives with a growing micro- bevel.

My experience with a super fine 1095 edge is like it doesn’t roll or chip...it like just quickly rounds off...

The great thing about 1095 is that its easy to sharpen and strop out in the field. If you're taking some super steel knife out into the woods you'd better be carrying diamond stones for it, unless you're only going to be out there a day or two.

    I don't understand...
    Watcman WF204, price $31, 20 cuts.
    Esee 3, price over $ 100, only 7/10 cuts... 🤔

For me toughness is more important than edge retention.

Some steels lose their razor edge and hold a working edge for a very long time, good d2, for instance has a reputation for that and I’m no fan of d2. Push cutting paper isn’t really something people buy a knife for, slicing paper might be more realistic test. You can really go down the rabbit hole testing blade steel’s😂🤣 I’m enjoying your channel, get well soon.

just sharpen it before use it. It's like esee sharpe their knife at a really fine edge

Rowen has it down. I'd pull it on a strop a few times with some 3 micron norton paste and see what you get. The 1095 from ESEE and Tops comes back pretty quick with minimal effort IME. Get better soon. Hair whittling and tissue are pretty illustrative. Need a wife with long hair.

Makes perfect sense too me from a metallurgy perspective compare to any low alloy carbon steel (01, (80crv2, etc) and you would probably get a similiar result. Get well soon Pbkg.

ps 1095 is still good steel that knife would probably just need a little stropping , edge retention isnt everything
