    Matt, this is top-notch content. More often than not TH-cam golfers get caught up on club reviews or swing thoughts. This is gold and can help anyone play better regardless of what equipment or swing. Cheers!

    Way back about 25 years ago, when I was young, I played 9 holes with a small guy in his late 60s or early 70s. He couldn't hit the ball more than 200 yards with any club in his bag. He shot 1-over, and then only because one of the par-4s was too long to reach in 2 shots, and he missed his putt. He just hit every shot dead straight, and he knew exactly how far each shot would go.

    Great video! Good to see a TH-cam golfer preach course management and not churn out endless videos about their quest for more swing speed.

    Great advice Matt.
    Higher handicap players should not be playing from the tips so the par 5s they play should be in the 450 to 500 yard range. Lets say 475 for example. 180 off the tee and 160 second shot will total 340 yards leaving only 135 for the third. Even if you miss the green on the third shot you could still get up and down for par, but being a higher handicap player a chip and two put for a bogey is fine.

  • @185norm
    @185norm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great advice Matt, I particularly like your comment on the green about "Par or bogey is still a great score" I generally shoot 90 and keep that thought in my mind when golfing but will always take advantage of those par or birdy opportunities to shoot below 90, thanks!

    Good gravy Matt. I love all this course management training. Breaking the course into bite size pieces is brilliant. I really dig the way to tell us,”you’re not tour pros so why are you trying to play like one”. Down to earth common sense golf for regular folks that are gonna make the game fun. You are a great teacher!

    I love this type of video. It helps me feel good about my choices on the course. 530 yard hole. Fine. My friends hit driver I whip out the 5 wood and hit the fairway short of them and do it again and leave a wedge in.

    Played yesterday. Par 5 hole 4 550 yards one of the hardest par 5s I’ve played undulating fairway, trees right, dead left. Went 5 iron, 7 iron, pitching wedge then 2 putted. Happiest I’ve ever been on that hole. Usually go driver, 3 off the tee!

      If I used those clubs, assuming I hit them all perfectly (unlikely) I would still have 200 yards left for my 4th. I am looking at driver, hybrid (can’t hit 3 wood off fairway), hybrid, 8 iron, chip and 2-3 putts, and the shots add up!

      You must be hitting your 7i very far! I play to a handicap of 18, so my club selection really depends on the hole. I play hybrid-8i-PW-PW on a 500m hole, but it all just depends on how I can set myself up for an easy approach. Good to see people following a safe strategy!

    Best advice I ever got which came from a scratch golfer I played with regularly many years ago
    was to NOT hit the ball and go for the green on my second shot, even after a great drive, when the chance, given my skill level, of getting on was probably 5%.... and usually resulted getting somewhere close to the green but then having a tricky pitch shot over a bunker requiring finesse (with my next shot frequently catching the bunker) , or in the bunker with a tough sand shot....The advice was to hit it to 100 yards or so, and then hit a full sand wedge in, which I was pretty good with..... I think my score on par 5's improved a stroke after I started playing that way.....and I only went for it in 2 if the hole was under 500 yards, I was in good position after a strong drive, and there was clear access to the green.
    Great advice all around from Matt!

    Love this video. Never gave it much thought before but regardless of my drive I always grab my 3 hybrid for my second shot. Thinking I will blast it. I hit it decent about 50% of the time but it can be a disaster and then unreachable green with an iron next shot. Im thinking about leaving it at home. I have an older set of Pings with a 3 and a 4 that I can hit decent consistently. Think I will start employing this get to the green in 3 or worst case 4 and not trying to get there in 2 and mess it up. Would appreciate other thoughts.

    I recently learned this lesson play shots back from the green so your 3rd shot (on par 5) to the green is within your comfort yardage. For players it may be 100 yds, or 80 yds, or for others 60 yds. So what I did is practice my PW from 60-120 yds. full swing, 3/4 or half swing and know your yardage. Since this change been making more pars with a few birdies. But the main thin is I'm not throwing away strokes.

  • @FROGSHAIR
    @FROGSHAIR 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt: You have a similar philosophy about golf, as I have been "preaching" to my Relatives & Friends. I call it "Happy Golf." Before I go to the first tee, I physically change the Pars, on the scorecard to 5's, for every hole. Even Par for me is around 90, so if I score a 5 on every hole, I shoot 90 for even Par. The Par on the scorecard is for the Pros, not me or my friends. I started my son, at 11 years old, shooting 8's on every hole. He rarely "bogeyed" a hole and he was happy! When he started shooting 5 "under Par," I had him reduce the pars on the Par 3's, to 7. When he started to shoot 5 "under Par" again, I had him reduce the par 4's to par 7. When he shot 5 "under Par" again, we then changed all of the pars to Par 7 and started over. By the end of the year, he was breaking 100. If you start to shoot 15 under par, when all holes are Par 5, you're shooting 75! Find the Par that works for your ability and you will always be golfing happily. Remember, when you play Par 5's, if you bogey a real Par 5 and the next hole is a real Par 3, then a real Par 3, shot by you, will be an Eagle and you are 1 under Par, after 2 holes. This would make any golfer be happy! Play and think within your ability, not what the scorecard says you are supposed shoot. Happy Golf is playing the way that always make you happy.

    I use similar tactics on long low stroke index par 4s where I have a shot. I see so many golfers hit a 220 yard drive and then try to hit the green from a similar distance with a 3 wood off the deck. Better to hit two wedges get on the green in 3 and play for an easy 5 or possible 4.

I wasn't playing great that day anyways, but cost myself a decent par chance by not giving it enough oomph and leaving it too short. It ended up being a bogey and one of my better holes that day and bogey is still a good score, but what could have been.

    We have a hole in my home course called 'thread the needle'. It's a relatively short par 5 with a very narrow fairway. I tee off with a 3 hybrid. I'm more accurate with the 3 hybrid, and if I DO go left or right, I don't go as FAR left or right, so I'm likely to be on the left or right fairway, not in rubbish. My second shot is another 3 hybrid, and my third shot depends on where I end up. Regardless, I nearly always par the hole and I'm a high handicapper.

    • @keernhaslem1845
      @keernhaslem1845 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to hear! There’s a par 5 in my town I call lucifer’s corner, because I realized the best way to play it is with three six irons. Off the tee, the fairway doglegs just 170 on the inside corner (downhill and around big trees), and 210 on the outside. Then the fairway tightens, up a hill, (with trees right) and way too many golfers will hit as much as they have, into trouble. The best option is another six up the hill, and a six (at the most) into the green. This tough hole becomes an easy bogey or par with this strat.

    Playing to my handicap. I aim for a 6 on par 5's. That way it takes the pressure off, plus I have a handicap that tells me, a 6 is fine. This is how I play par 5's. I use driver down to 4 iron off the tee. Than use my second shot to get me inside a 140 mts, and then i can use my short wedges which I am pretty good with to get on the green and then putt. My problem is off the tee, erratic and not long, so I work out what's best for my good tee shot and my worse tee shot.

    Put the driver back in the bag take out the 5 wood and hit two 5 irons , worst case scenario I'd be chpping from 30 yards left or right guaranteeing a 6 ruling out a 7 and maybe getting a par .

    This video takes for granted that, us, amateurs are all about shooting lower scores. The fact is that we are not. I, for example, rather double bogey 7 out of 8 par 5s to get my odd eagle. The thrill of having a chance at eagle can be worth 5 to 10 extra shots on the score card. I also gotta say that my topped 3 wood shots go the same distance as my 7 iron, but often straighter.

  • @Fred_Nickles
    @Fred_Nickles 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Par 5s are all a mind game, hit a solid drive doesn't need to be a bomb but 250ish is fine. Then your longest comfortable club into the green. 50/50 you hit the green or land close to the greens edge with a 3rd shot left for GIR.

  • @traviscovert
    @traviscovert 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I understand what you’re saying that you’re playing the percentages to get the better shot, but the best percentage to get up and down for birdie is to hit 3 wood up close to the green. Even if it’s in the greenside bunker. You have a better chance to hit a bad bunker shot closer than a bad 80 yard wedge shot.

    Guilty as charged Matt, my next game I’m going to try 7 iron off the tee and go from there, I’m currently playing off 28 and want to get lower,

    I carried a 4 for a bit over 20 years...and even though I was very long off the tee ( I am 6'6" and a pretty big guy ) I always played Par 5's the same way I played Par 4's...from the green back to the tee! I seldom hit driver off the tee because I had a 13° 3 wood that I could hit around 260 yards off the tee. So my second shot was usually a 5 or 6 iron to set me up to hit a 9 iron or PW for my third shot. Also...most golfers I see on the practice range spend most of their time hitting their driver instead of practicing their short game! Big mistake! If your golf course plays to Par 72...with 4 Par 5's & 4 Par 3's...you're only hitting your driver on 14 holes! The rest of the round you're hitting irons or your putter! So why hit 30 balls or more with your driver on the practice ranger?

    Quite right, if I can get up in two, I will try but, that is often not the case. Even when its a shortish par 5 , with a tight drive and a well defended green, I will do as you say. Plot my way to the green. You talk a lot of sense , most of the time, lol

    As soon as I stopped aiming at the pin on the chip and just trying to land on the green my score went down by 10
