The benefit of shopping like this is the relationships you create with these vendors (which lets you enjoy the Spanish social vibe) and the extra quality of the items that you buy. I used to watch these videos and daydream of having your experience and now, I am having it myself. The Mercat Central here in Valencia is full of great choices and so many things are well priced too. It’s a joy going there and having happy conversations with my regular vendors. I am also glad that I am only a 3-minutes' walk from it. I will rejoice when Yoly can drink vermut again. It’s my drink of choice (actually my addiction) and couldn’t imagine being without it. The day Yoly drinks it again will be a moment of great celebration. Salud!
Ohmigosh! We were just in Valencia and my favorite experience after seeing Calatrava's architecture was shopping in Mercat Central. Fabulous food and friendly vendors. So many choices and all beautiful.
Yep so true, I love going to my favorite local shops to do my groceries. Love going to the bakery, fruits and vegetables shop, butcher cheeseshop, fishshop etc. We are on first name basis now. 😃👍

I've been watching your videos for over a year now and congratulations on your new family addition. Your trip reminds me of the time I was stationed in Italy. Bakery, butcher, cheese, dairy, all different shops. Loved it. My wife and I want to spend one to two months in Spain next year. God willing and no further travel restrictions. We aren't "Tourists." Greetings from Japan. When I was a child I used to go to the same market "Las Ventas" which was originally located not very far from its currenl location. I still remember the quality of the fruits and vegetables. Having lived in great many countries I venture to say that the variaty and quality of food in Spain, France and Italy is unparalleled.

Oh boy!! I grew up in Spain, born there, mom was from Spain, and American father and moved to NY over 20 years ago but still have my sister and family in Madrid. Anyway, this video really got me home sick! I could almost smell the delicious food in the markets! There is no other country in my opinion with better food! I've visited Spain 4 times since 2007 and spent 7 months in total exploring from Tarifa to San Sebastian and Santiago de Compostela to Barcelona. 14 visits to Madrid and I have done all the eleven things not to do, so much fun, embarrassment, hilarity and places I have not been invited back to. But hey it's a big place and I struck up a conversation in almost every bar restaurant I visited. From Gran Via tourist traps to a no frills lunch bar in the back streets of Dos Hermanas. Love Spain, love your channel.

You reminded me of something that happened in the late 1980s in my barrio at the time (Vallehermoso). I was known as the foreigner (el Guiri del barrio) and went in to order some minced beef.....and I ordered half a kilo of CARNE PISADA.... the people in the queue sniggered, but the butcher took it a stage further, and asked if I wanted it MUY PISADA OR POCO PISADA......it was only when he laughed and asked if I wanted it PICADA as well, that I realised my mistake..... luckily everyone pretty much knew me and it was a talking point for a few days in the bars....

Great to see you guys back at it - and now three of you! Congrats! James & Yoly, my wife Carolina and I spent the last two weeks in Spain and 3 days of that in Madrid. We hit a number of your recommended locations: Fide, Averias, La Canibal, and our favorite: Taberna de Abajo! Sadly we are now back in the States and back to work! Incredibly enough, our last night in Spain (last Friday, 22-Oct) was the first day Mariano opened Taberna de Abajo in many months, due to Covid (maybe over a year?). Your writeup was spot-on. We became friends with one of Mariano's best buddies, Miguely, and he showed me and my wife (also an española as Yoly) a few other Conde Duque sitios. (ps: We showed Mariano a video of you but he didn't remember - you need to go back and remind him, lol!) Thanks for the great consejos. Envious of you three having fun in such a great city and country! But we'll get there permanently in a few years, hopefully - that's the plan.
What a GREAT return, James! Yoli looks great and Lucia was so chill. I just learned from a science podcast that males suckle twice as much as females, so Yoli is lucky. Shopping local and having good relationships with shopkeepers is so rewarding.
