    In today's video we take a look at custom supports in PrusaSlicer with their Paint-On-Supports. They are a completely different way of applying support and enforcers or blockers than we covered in Cura in 2020. I really enjoy this style of supports and we will go over what they are, the different options, and how to use them.

    Good stuff! I find the circle option useful for less organic models where I want to be more precise when placing supports along a sharp edge or corner. I just rotate the view to hide the top and side portions and you get a nice clean line along the edge. Thanks for covering the details on all of the options. It's really helpful. I'll be sharing this as one to watch for others to learn how paint on supports work.

      Awesome to hear. I have been using them quite a bit. I feel like I almost use the blockers as much as the adding of them. I like both parts depending on what the model is!

    This was super useful and I had no idea you could do this. I like prusa better than the other slicers I’ve tried but didn’t always like the supports it generates. This solves that. Thank you.

    That is INCREDIBLY powerful. Looks a hell of a lot faster than trying to do the same 'style' of support editing in Cura.

    Great Video. Best one yet. Prusa auto supports seem a little heavy handed at times and sometimes very hard to remove. This is a nice option to have and make it easier to remove the supports.

  • @tr1pp4

    Can you also do a video about the settings? This the much bigger pain point for me. The model looks just uggy or the support is too hard to remove at the end of the print

    I finally have prusaslicer another go and I've hit a maddening issue with supports that I've never encountered in cura. Once i slice a model if i find i need to change the support settings, such as support angle, the setting in greyed out and i can't edit it. All i want is to change the angel from 50° to 30° but I'm unable to modify that setting unless i close the slicer, relaunch and load the model again and start from scratch. Can't i just slice, preview, modify settings and slice again like in cura?
    i also need to have the model raised 8mm of the bed like i can in cura but prusaslicer seems intent on forcing it to stay directly on the bed. I've given up on fixing this though as everything I've read seems to indicate this is impossible.

    what settings do you have set to support material

  • @joeking433
    @joeking433 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are the supports done by the person that made the STL file? Or does Prusa slicer do all the supports? For example, if I flip the model does Prusa see this and do the supports automatically or does it just support as if the STL model wasn't flipped?

    • @kcdakrt
      @kcdakrt ปีที่แล้ว

      Supports are generated by slicer not stl. You can turn a print any way you want and the slicer will generate supports where it thinks they're needed.

    I use paint on supports everyday! It makes life so much easier. I think cura tired to implement it but it was really buggy? Also, I didn't know about like half the features you showed! :P

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome. I often only use a fraction of the features for a certain tool so going over it in detail even helps me haha. Hmm I did not know that. It is very possible. The custom supports I used in Cura do work but they take me much longer to place all of the blocks.

  • @unloveableandre

    Thank you! OMG, I didn't know about this. This will save so many of my prints... better than doing the everywhere versus the on plate only. But still bugs me the lack of tree supports on PrusaSlicer.

    Which platform do you prefer for 3d printing, Apple or PC? I'm looking at getting a printer soon and I'm just wondering which you find easier. Thanks!

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tough to say. I was PC most of my 3d printing journey. I did not switch for 3d printing but rather video editing. I really like Apple for their FCPX software. Either is going to be fine. Most larger apps will be both but Cura for example definitely plays nicer with Windows.

    • @jon9947
      @jon9947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModBotArmy So I am not switching platforms, and I have zero interest in Chromebooks. With that said I have seen so many people with Chromebooks ask about slicers, it might be a good video idea. Chromebooks are cheap and they can run Linux apps, might make a good video idea. I am sure you have enough great video ideas, but if you ever get board/run out I dont think I have ever seen anyone cover this particular topic :)

    yay, the paint on supports are decent, still prefer Ideamaker's supports though, they pop off easier and have really good custom control without a bunch of adjustments and crap to get there, the defaults work awesome.

    If only PrusaSlicer would add Cura-like FDM tree supports ... Paint-on supports are so great, but the fact that they still move straight down instead of trying to get away from the object still makes the Cura tree supports more useful in quite some cases ...

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah tree supports are pretty awesome. Almost magical how they are like vines reaching up to what you need supported.

    • @extrutim
      @extrutim 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are already working on that. That will probably come in one of the next versions as well.

    • @MisterkeTube
      @MisterkeTube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@extrutim I really really really hope you are right ... Paint-on supports combined with FDM tree support (and maybe paint-on base spot control for those, i.e. where the "tree" is allowed to touch the object) could really be a game-changer, I think.

    Hi, I wanted to give you some personnal feedback to help you grow. If you don't want thjese, then just don't read it ^^
    I really love your video, except for one point ! Your intros, they always look extremely long and make the video feel extremely long too. It sometimes discourage me from watching the video because I feel like there will be a lot, where in this case, it's only an 11 min video.
    I think if you were to make much shorter intros, like 30-60 second, your video wouuld get way more attractive and keep more the viewer's attention.
    But that's my personnal take on this ! do whatever you want with this piece of information !

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Feedback is always welcome especially if it is in the form of constructive criticism which this is. Something to consider. My retention has actually gone way up over the years compared to when I started out. I know the intros are long but I almost feel like they help shape the story or what is to come. I feel that without them the video has much less context. I would not be surprised if regular viewers do skip the intro in some cases which is totally fine. I definitely appreciate the feedback though and will keep it in mind :)

    • @Sttreg
      @Sttreg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModBotArmy maybe, something to try is to make 2 intros: one that is short and catchy, to grab the viewer's attention, then come your logo, with the song, and finally, the second intro, where you can give more context, this way your content stays the same, just in difference sequence's order
