  • Here's the demo to the reprise to "Part of Your World" from Howard and Alan's first collaboration with Disney, The Little Mermaid. This track comes from the 1994 Disney Records CD set, The Music Behind the Magic.
Here's Alan Menken's song note from the set's included book:
"This song moment evolved a good deal further after this demo, but hearing Howard's first impulses really brought 'Mermaid' to life for me."

    LYRICS / TRANSCRIPT
    ****************************
What would I give to live where you are?
What would I pay to stay here beside you?
What would I do to see you smiling at me?
    Now there's a dream, now there's a goal
    Now there's a need
    I'll never control
I won't get free till I can be
    Part of your world
    What would I give
    If I could live
    Outta these waters?
    What would I pay
    To spend a day
    Holding your hand?
    I'd give my life,
    I'd sell my soul
    'Cause I feel
    I'll never be whole
But I can see I'll never be
    Part of your world

Mad respect for Howard! Disney always had "I want" songs since Snow White but it's only after The Little Mermaid and "Part of Your World" that that's been the formula ever since, thanks to Howard Ashman. The little mermaid, beauty and the beast and aladdin's songs is written by Howard Ashman. It's a shame that just few of disney fans talked about Howard. He is literally the reason why disney is still exist now. Howard Ashman is a legendary lyricist who made Disney rise from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway theater world that time. You can know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He also made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. He is the one who directing Jodi Benson to sing Part of Your World. We all know that the original Part of Your World will always be the best "I Want" song, not just because the nostalgia vibe but also Jodi Benson is really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. Disney renaissance is mostly known by their songs. Before the little mermaid project, Howard gathered the whole disney crew for a meeting. He tell about broadway history to all the crew and they all were impressed at him. Fun fact: Howard did much more than write the songs on this movie, he also brought on board Jodi Benson, directed her during this song, changed an English butler crab named Clarence to be a Jamaican crab named Sebastien, wrote the dialog in the scene where Triton gives Ariel her legs, and also produced the movie with John Musker.
After The Little Mermaid released and became a biggest success in box office, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken was going to make movie called Aladdin. They've come up with several of ideas and musical numbers but Jeffrey Katzenberg then dragging them to a new project, Beauty and The Beast. Unfortunately, Ashman passed away 6 month before beauty and the beast was released and that movie was dedicated to him that even in the credit scene you can see that they gaved him credit to honor him because of how important he was. After beauty and the beast released, Jeffrey then took away all of Ashman's idea and script, almost 99% of them. But sadly some of the songs were removed in the final film
He is the one who bring the new element broadway musical to the movie. This is the bright spot where everyone started to wacthing to animated movies again, previously no one was at all interested in animated movies. That's why every single disney movie now has a song in it. Disney keep using this formula until now (but not as effective as in the renaissance) because it's Howard's legacy. You can tell how they respect Ashman that even in Beauty and The Beast credit scene, there's a statement to honor him
    "To our friend, Howard,
who gave a mermaid her voice
    and a beast his soul,
    we will be forever grateful."
    Howard Ashman
    1950-1991
No wonder why The Little Mermaid be the first disney animated classic who get an oscar nomination. Also Beauty and the Beast is Disney's 30th animated motion picture, a dedication to Howard Ashman before he had passed away and the only classic movie to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Picture.
He was the one who brought “I Want” song to another level! I Want song is literally every disney movies now. "In almost every musical ever written... the leading lady usually sits down on something... and sings about what she wants in life, and the audience falls in love with her and roots for her to get for the rest of the night." - Howard Ashman.
He and his partner, Alan Menken, is the greatest duo that anyone have ever recognized in animated movie history. Also gain respect to Alan Menken, The little mermaid is actually his first score yet he can bring the magic with that scores. You can said that Part of Your World orchestra in the opening scene is the best choir you have ever seen and heard.
Have you ever heard about the quote
"There are three kinds of pianists: Jewish pianists, homosexual pianists, and bad pianists."
    -Vladimir Horowitz
That quote actually referring to Ashman because he was Jewish and gay but still doesnt changed the fact that he really putted his care and love the the movies
I can't imagine how much more greater and better Disney would have been doing today if this great man was still alive. It hurts to actually wonder

I think Disney can make some nice, deep movies when they want to, but The Little Mermaid feels like it's geared a _lot_ more to _just_ kids than most of their other movies around that time.
This version of the song made me feel more than _anything_ in the movie did.

    • @Psychesrose
      @Psychesrose 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

UPSCLARK1 I don't know. Disney gotten away with a lot of dark stuff. (see Nazi reference in Lion King and death of bambi's mother/mufasa). Of course they're not going to kill the main character, and she does sell a part of herself. Personally, I think it was mainly cut for time (movie is only 90 minutes), and the mood is supposed to be uplifting because we're supposed to believe this love will eventually be mutual. This version gives a strong sense of unrequited love from back when they were probably considering keeping the original ending.

Eric marries another girl and Ursula, feeling sorry for Ariel, decides to forget about using her (Ariel) as a weapon against Triton, returns her voice and turns her back into mermaid upon the sunset of the third day. Unfortunately, Ursula can no longer turn Ariel into a permanent human, since Eric was the only solution for her permanent transformation. At Eric's wedding day, Ariel is seen on a rock nearby singing this (with Eric looking and the jealous bride pissing off XD), Eric realizes his mistake and Ariel comes back to the sea.

@@jessem4842 The film will be a disaster, not Halle Bailey (which is still a racist thing, since Disney doesn't want to bother making a new princess, but instead forcing the young actress to outshine Jodi and Sierra just so they can make some diversity, I believe that Halle is excited as well as terrified, since Ariel is the first princess to open the Disney Renaissance and she knows she has to do it perfectly, next to all those #notmyariel comments or those fake supporters who are just playing nice so they can argue all day about having an actress of color portraying a iconical white, red-haired character), but the whole cast feels wrong. I was shocked when I heard they didn't cast Harvey as Ursula even though Ursula was meant to have a deeper voice and drag personality, Harvey acted in drag and he would be a great choice, he proved it while performing on a concert. Luckily, Harry Styles turned down the role of Eric, I just can't picture him as Eric.

The remake of Little mermaid should’ve be a LGBT story!
Howard got seen, approved and appreciated by the industry by his work in the little mermaid. It would be so nice and powerful if it could be “his” story and feature the original lyric and song in it.

    • @pecahalloween
      @pecahalloween 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

They could've made a remake with male Ariel it would make much more sense (then casting a black actor would not be such a fuss, since it would be probably a new character), since the story is based of Andersen's love life (he was bisexual and he devoted the story to his male friend who rejected his love and married another).
However, Disney, being a ''family'' company would not allow such a thing, and sadly, people of LGBT community will be represented as minor characters or villains for many years to come. I am an amateur actor and I wrote a script based off the Little Mermaid, but as a gay love story, however with a happy ending, as a nod to Mr. Hans Christian Andersen who could not fulfill his desire to be free and happy, and therefore gave the mermaid a sad ending, today, gay people can live their happily ever after (in some countries, at least).
