Spurs always have been worth watching for one reason or another since the late 50s , mostly playing flair Football with a few dips here and there , the fans are amongst the most loyal in the country too , contrary to certain sections of the media's opinion at times.
I was still at school but went to pretty much every home game that year. Still love that Admiral kit, it was just when new flashier kits were coming in. Brilliant memories thanks.
I went to all but 2 home games that season and it was such a good season to watch Spurs, particularly as we got to see a lot of teams we never normally played. Unfortunately one of the games I missed was the Bristol Rovers game.
I remember when we played the opening game v Sheffield United I went to buy a programme and saw the front cover was in colour, I was so excited just to see that.
I'd guess season 1977-78 must have been a bit of a culture shock for Spurs and their fans, what after having experienced such much glory previously, though no doubt other Second Division clubs viewed Spurs' visit as a "cup final" of sorts, a bit like when Manchester United were in the second tier, a few seasons previous. And in common with United, I don't think there was much doubt that Spurs would make an immediate return to the top flight, though in Spurs' case it was a bit of a close thing in the end, ie on goal difference over Brighton. When after they were looking more or less home and dry at one stage, they seemed to suffer a case of the jitters/promotion nerves, in the vital final run-in.
Blackpool and Palace away were also covered by tv. Went to all the home game, all London aways, (including Orient and Arsenal friendlies) plus Luton and Southampton.
I remember the Luton game. It was called off on the Saturday because of a frozen pitch. It was played a few days later, you beat us 4.1 I think. Spurs brought the biggest following I've ever seen at Luton. I remember Southampton v Spurs on MOD, they played out a draw to both win promotion on the last day of the season.
@@alunjones685 Alun, Spurs away at the seaside in the 70's with the chance of being promoted (we lost). Sadly the match is remembered because of the trouble !.
@@juliancrittall3291 Yes, indeed. The end of that season put 10 years on me as we very nearly blew it - I reminded Alan Mullery (Brighton manager then) of this when I met him at a signing session in Spurs store!
@@alunjones685 Well remembered, we should have won the div 2 title !. The year we went down, remember us, Wednesday night game, beat Liverpool, Ralph Coates scored. Daily Mirror, Harry Miller, chief football reporter.
Should have walked away with the title but dropped silly points at home. Match of the day showed the win at sunderland and the crucial last day draw at southampton but sadly they seem to have been wiped.
In fairness only lost one game at home all season and that was the penultimate home game against Sunderland but there was a wobble starting with the Mansfield game where the team only won one out of six ironically against the team that ended up winning the league but fortunately Perrymans late winner against Hull in the penultimate game was the turning point

The quintessential Tottenham kit for me.
My all time favourite Tottenham kit, brings back so many happy memories.
Admiral were definitely the best kit makers this country has ever seen and the Spurs home kit is probably my favourite

The programme and the handbook developed every year up to about 1987. More colourful, thicker and glossy
Gutted to say I missed 2 games that season hull and Blackburn away
Great memories thanks 👍

@@noone-ty3lz Yup - you are correct.
For the Southampton game, I paid 7 pounds for a 1 pound ticket off off a tout at Waterloo station.
@@noone-ty3lz Yup on the following Wednesday. Some trouble in the side enclosure as well.
A great season of atmosphere and fun for us kids. Especially behind the goal in the 9-0!
I saw Spurs beat Oldham 5-1, and Notts County 5-2 (I think) that season but missed the Bristol Rovers game. Bollocks.
Was at the Bristol Rovers match at the Lane. I remember catching the train back to Liverpool Street Station and being in a bit of a daze.
still pisses us off on the blue side of Bristol , thank god glyn jones was on form it couldve been worse
@@schoolie I was at that game and yes the goalkeeper hard a superb match. God knows what the final score would have been if he had a stinker, 13-0?
Spurs was my first Luton away game, lost 2.0
Is there a copy of the southampton v spurs game at the dell when we won promotion?
Proper football then standing , no cover, getting soaked , mud bath pitches happy days !
Great memories, went to my first Spurs match that season away at Brighton.
Baptism of fire!

Can you imagine today’s players playing on that Mansfield pitch? Game would have been called off!!
Jesus the goalkeeper is absolutely amazing how can he catch the power shooting without gloves

Got up with a draw in the final match against Southampton at the Dell.
The Hull match was an evening game. Don't recall many if any league game from Div 2 as highlights show.
@@littlebigbrain Spurs definitely rode their luck at times that season but overall deserved to go up, a decent side with a few real standout stars
