I'd completely forgotten this game, still hard to believe Spurs came from two down, they really should have had to come from about nine down. Docherty was building something quite special at MU, maybe they could have challenged Liverpool, such a shame how it all ended for him. Still, him and Mary are still together 43 years later and United have won the league 13 times since, so all is well that ends well.
We'll never know obviously, but I suspect United wouldn't have been able to match Liverpool even if Docherty had stayed - they could have become respectable challengers though. And the football would have been more exciting than it was under Sexton... RIP Tommy, it was his time at the club that gave the fans something to believe in again after a long period of absolute rubbish.
The Doc never got the credit he deserved, probably because of how it all ended, He inherited a pile of crap and rebuilt the team without spending piles of money and mainly recruiting players from lower leagues. Within 18 months they were playing great football and challenging for everything. Sexton and his 'sophisticated', cerebral approach, strangled the life out of the team. I suppose United wanted a safe pair of hands- literally- but they were never the same after he took over.

A season that started so well then it went tits up by losing 8-2 to Derby and it didn't get much better. I saw them once or twice and they were bloody awful. The worst side Tottenham ever produced in my lifetime.
You went down with one of the highest win rates for a team in last place: almost one third of the total fixtures. It was a fairly even First Division that year, so you may have been a bit unlucky.
@@scherben8870 I wasn't aware of that statistic but I can say I saw them play five times that season and for want of better wording, we were awful and in all fairness, relegation served us well: we were promoted the following season with a new impetus and within three years were a team to be reckoned with.
The worst Spurs team was 1993-94. It holds the club record of seven consecutive league defeats. And won even fewer matches and achieved the same number of points (going on three points for a win) over a 42 game season, than the 1976-77 team. It finished 15th out of 22, that season. Yet didn’t ensure safety until their penultimate game. And at least the 1976-77 team had a young promising Glenn Hoddle.
From what i remember back then, and i was pretty young, many grounds didn't have segregation til about 77 or 78, so many away fans were wary of going to some grounds without segregation.. United always travelled as they had strength in numbers, of the London fans,Chelsea travelled well, but most other London fans rarely came up north. Tottenham and Arsenal rarely came north in number til the late 70s. I can remember Arsenal bringing just 17 fans on the open embankment terrace to Bolton in 78/79. Was an evening game, Bolton won 4-2, but 17 was abysmal. They did bring over 3K the following season though.
Often wonder what would have happened to United has Docherty not been sacked they were not that good under Sexton although were League and cup runners up
Absolutely, Martin. If there's one good thing Martin Edwards did, it was being realistic on wages. I think the difference with Shilton was £50 a week. We lost Pancho similarly.
The thing is Utd attracted people like me in the 70`s ( from the midlands ) I was at this game the atmosphere and craic was top notch, went to the game at spurs always remember that one because me car got stolen and was used in a armed robbery and was featured on police 5 and Shaw Taylor no kidding !

They got relegated _that_ season.
First Manchester United game I ever attended
U N I TE D
United are the team for me
Great support United had then, United supporters even filled the away terrace because Spurs fans just did not turn up at OT yet when United went to white hart lane they always took thousands
McAllister played very well again

Early 90s was worse for us.
@@stevehinde4364 because of that Chav Cundy.
Spurs fans stayed at home that day
Where are the spurs fans? And yes I know this was 1976. Did they not travel north then.? No segregation at old Trafford.
I’m not quite sure how spurs managed to win this match...
Doc's boys: always unpredictable.
By scoring more goals than united
Easy they scored three
5:30.
Yet Utd finish sixth in the league and Spurs are relegated, finishing bottom ! Utd should have been 5 up by half time-relentless
United had two bad league patches that season... (1) while Buchan was injured (2) some games were thrown away in the run-up to the cup final.
they were relentless until the 2nd half! lol
Real football
Often wonder what would have happened to United has Docherty not been sacked they were not that good under Sexton although were League and cup runners up
As a Derby fan...I wish he had stayed there..he destroyed our club....
The club was probably on the slide in fairness before Docherty turned up but in fairness he hardly helped
We'd have won the League and European Cup, I reckon.
Merlin has told me shilton was always asking him when utd were going to sign him.Lost him over a few quid and he would have been the difference.
Absolutely, Martin. If there's one good thing Martin Edwards did, it was being realistic on wages. I think the difference with Shilton was £50 a week. We lost Pancho similarly.
Glory, glory Tottenham Hotspur
Where? When?
