Gåte is a folk rock band that formed in 1999, so they've basically been at it for 25 years. They base their songs on Norwegian traditions, mythology, folk culture, etc. The vocalist also sings using more traditional Norwegian methods, which can register as being off tone for a lot of people mostly familiar with modern music. I am from Norway, and I'm super happy with this entry! Not only is it my type of music, but it's also a great representation of Norway, it's not the run of the mill, catchy pop song, it's impactful and emotional, and incredibly well performed by amazing musicians!
Progressive folk-rock, is as close as I could describe them. They've been around for 21 years and have won many, many awards and is our 2nd biggest band. Their first (and still biggest) hit was "Sjå Attende" which gets across a lot more what they generally sound like. Watching them get announced was basically like if UK announced Muse for Eurovision. Proportionally.
Thank you for your reaction and honest opinion. To be honest with you, if you don’t like it it’s fair enough, but this is a genre you obviously don’t know much about. That’s completely fair as well if you’re not Norwegian. The goal is not to produce modern music with an ethnic flavor but to present ethnic folk music with a contemporary sound. Essentially, this type of music doesn't have choruses per se either. There are repetitions, but they are either sung as repetitions of each lines, the last line or as short repetitions within the verses. To come around this, the ethnic string instrument (nøkkelharpe) plays those repetitions with a contra melody in the first part of the verses. Gåte does create choruses though, but here this is resolved by incorporating a kind of spell, or Norwegian kulokk (herding calls). Anyway, the most important goal is to keep the ethnic authenticity and tradition and build a modern arrangement on that material and not vice versa. The possibilities become limited, but authentic. Additionally, the vocals must integrate the natural scale from Norwegian folk music with the 440 Hz equal temperament. For those accustomed only to equal temperament, this might sound weird and off-pitch as well, but such deviation is intentional to capture the ethnic nuances. I find it charming and perfect with all of its imperfections. For me it doesn’t matter if they make it to the final or how many points they get. I will be proud anyway.
I think it would have been best for you not to stop so many times. If you watch it through from beginning to end, it eill likely pull you in. It seems most people that see this performance are completely mesmerized, even if they wouldn't normally listen to something like this. Also hope you're not listening through laptop speakers... there's a lot of nuance. As for Gåte, they have toured for 20+ years, and are known as a fantastic live band, so im not worried about her vocals. It should also sound a bit raw.
The story in the song is a 1000-year-old poem. In short, a girl is turned into a wolf by her stepmother. She can only get rid of the curse by drinking her brother's blood. She meets her stepmother in the forest, the stepmother is pregnant. She kills her stepmother and drinks her unborn brother's blood. We have two written languages in Norway and we all learn both written languages at school. Order Norwegian and Nynorsk. She sings in Nynorsk. Which is a kind of "light version" of Old Norse. The "screams" are called kulokk and are used to call livestock home from the mountains in the evening. Gåte means riddle. Gåte cannot be put into a specific music genre. They play everything from folk rock to folk metal.
Please spend the time needed to get into this performance. I see your lost at sea statement, but that is not whats it's about. To me this entery is the far best one yet. Thanks for reaction :)

I wouldn't be surprised if the UK doesn't give us votes, as it's pretty "foreign" for the average British person. I think it's more familiar to Eastern and Southern Europe. Obviously I can be wrong, but it's my impression. Anyway, I'm truly happy we send this song, it represents our culture far more than usual, and it's sung in a traditional manner. Don't really care what our result will be, I'm happy we show this to Europe.
How about watching the whole video before you comment? You cannot get a full impression of a song if you stop the song every 5 seconds. You miss the structure and build up totally! People are way too impatient nowadays and that's the Achilles heel of this song. People are more used to easy listening A4 radiopop (so boring), but other cool songs have done well before. However, I think this is the best song we have chosen for Eurovision! I don't care how Europe will react, because this is genuine, artistic and unique music not solely written for Eurovision. If Europe don't like it, so be it.
I agree. As a Norwegian I can be proud of this. Some people just don't have the patience to give things a listen first. It seems sometimes that US people have more problem with it though, might have something to do with all the sugar they consume,

Its not gate, this Å sounds nothing like regular A. Its the schwa sound in english words like baught,caught,thaught. Sound that augh makes. Hard to explain good
It does not sound like a regular "a", it sounds like "augh" in "caught" (kåt), or "ough" in "bought" (båt). (side not, kåt and båt are both Norwegian words and mean something else). Also, the "e" at the end is not silent, it's like "e" in "pen" or "bend".

The text copied from newspaper: She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood. "There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted
cruel lol, you need a wil to understand old folklore to get this text. It's about revenge. In medieval societites people died all the time, so dying wasn't so terrifying as it is now, and calling it cruel is a bit baby talk if you ask me. It's an old text, 1000 years old actually, give it some slack. It sounds like critizisme of a bully in school lol. We all have to be judge by our peers, and these peers has been dead for 1000 years already lol.
