Now, to the song technique, it is traditional Scandinavian singing, with roots from at least the 13th century. Dunno the "correct" term for it, but it is kind of like going into and out of falsetto, not too unlike yodeling. The folk music this is based off of had klind of a resurgence in Norway in the national romantic era of the mid 19th century, and has survived as a niche 'til today. Gåte (pron.: ca "gaw-teh" - literaly "riddle") took these folk elements and added a rock sound (and sometimes, like here, an electro/breakbeat sound) to it, and they've been around (on and off) for some 25 years by now. The singer, Gunhild, was still a teenager when they released their full length debut.
They have several albums of great music, so now you have a whole universe of folklore and story telling Folkrock to enjoy. She was only 13 when she started what became this band with her brother, and 16-17 when they broke through with their album Jygri, so she has been doing this for a long time. They are amazing live. The lyrics are always based on old mystical tales or on folk music songs. If you watch the song Bendik & Årolilja, you will see how incredible young she was, and how talented at that early stage. The song is a sad lovestory about Bendik who falls in love with the kings daughter, and gets executed because he visited her secretly. She dies from sorrow. [Sample: Vocalization; Marit Jensen Lillebuen]
[Verse 1]
I was such a beautiful maiden
My stepmother evil, my mother she died
She turned me into a sword and a needle
And sent me to the king's estate
And the anger my stepmother felt the most
That all the stately liked me best
[Chorus: Vocalization]
[Verse 2]
Then she gave me skin like a grey wolf
She cursed me to walk the forest alone
And never will I bе whole and good
Before I drink my brothеrs' blood
[Chorus: Vocalization]
[Outro: Vocalization, Storm]
I then tore out her heart
So her blood flowed free
Then I got to drink my brothers' blood
