Wait... I'd think you aren't stuck using the iron axe, because you already got the addy sword or whatever from misthalin. The point of a nuzlocke is that your party grows as you progress from route to route. You just can't get main hand slot gear piece from asgarnia unless you use a reroll. Incredible editing work either way!
Not me and my partner freaking out about you saying you'll do lost city 😬 (dramen staff is a weapon) A reroll could fix you up but yeah. Actually, you'd need an ax first anyways so the dramen staff isn't the only hurdle.
Don't feel too bad about missing out on the diamond, you wouldn't be able to use the dragon longsword anyway. To get to Zanaris you need to get the Dramen staff which is itself a weapon, so even if you had done everything right, it would be impossible until you're unlocking the next place anyway. EDIT: It seems I commented too early LOL. but my point stays about needing to use a reroll to get the dragon longsword. if the bronze axe didn't do it in entrana, the dramen staff would.
I mean I can't exactly comment on much, but I'll say that imo you should have to count the axe but not the staff. Nobody would reasonably consider the staff a weapon except in the strictest sense. It might have attack options but so does a bunch of flowers, it's not something you fight with unless you're meme-ing.

In this case, it's not that wielding an axe is necessary in order to woodcut with it, but that obtaining a wieldable item locks it in as the weapon for this region.

Is there a reason why picking up your items didn't lock them in? Don't think you've covered that use case.

unfortunately due to my restrictions I HAVE to equip it because it has an equip option and my weapon slot wasn't locked yet :'(
