Fresh from the Showcase here at SwissWatchExpo. Today, we're going to talk about a really beautiful watch in Rose gold. The IWC Perpetual Calendar. Now IWC has a really intense history with pilot's watches. And in fact, actually the very first pilot's watch was created by IWC. So all of the other pilots watches that claim to fame for all these years are actually pretenders in the game because the IWC was the very first watch to go up with a pilot. And on top of that, they were the very first pilot's watch to be water resistant enough to be able to swim in. And that happened around the 1940s. So IWC develops their own movements and they make some really intense and really cool movements and have over the years. And in the next segment, we're going to talk about a pilot's watch. That's platinum. It's a 1936 model that has a throwback to that whole idea of the original pilots watch.
And the reason I bring that up is because this particular watch is a, Portugieser not a Pilot's watch. Now that may be a little confusing because when you very first look at this, watch you think to yourself, wow, that's big enough to be a Pilot's watch. The original Pilot's watches were very large and they were very easy to read. Well, this perpetual calendar has a whole lot of complications set on the dial, so it needs to be large like that. And in fact, actually IWC has a perpetual calendar Pilot's series watch, not to be confused with this watch. One of the things that makes this watch particularly interesting is it has a moon phase on it. Now there are a lot of watches in the world that have moon phases on them. And this one has two moon phases. Why? Well it's because each of the moon phases, uh, is for the Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere.
So no matter where you lived in the world, if you want to know what the moon phase is for the opposite side of the world, from where you live, you can simply see that on the dial here. Now, this particular watch has a very complicated movement, as you might imagine, because it's a five perpetual calendar. Their perpetual calendar can keep track of the next 577 years. And in that 577.5 years, actually that moon phase only has to be reset by one single day. So this is a watch that can, as long as it's being taken care of properly can last and accurately tell the time and the calendar for a very long time. That's not typical of most perpetual calendars. Most perpetual calendars are only capable of keeping maybe a hundred to 150 years out. So that makes this watch very special. This watch was first conceived of in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it took about five and a half years to develop the movement for this watch.
So it's something that can really looked at and you can see a lot of detail to it. You can find new things about it every time you have a look at it. This is something we do a little bit different today than maybe some of our other views, because this one does have so many complication sets all of the sub dials on the watch do something. For example, this sub dial here tells not only the day of the week, but also also the seconds of the entire watch. So when you're looking at the hours and minutes, the seconds hand is as a small hand here on this sub dial. What's interesting about what year this watch tells you about the year is in four digit form. It's not simply an arm that tells you what it is or a pointer that tells you what it is.

What about Cartier Santos? It is the first pilots watch. Alberto Santos Dumont got it especially made so he could time his flights and he wore it when he was trying to increase his fight times.

That's correct, the Cartier Santos is the first recorded wristwatch be used as an instrument in the cockpit. However, the IWC Pilot's Watch set the standard for what we consider today as a pilot's watch - the readability, leather strap and anti-magnetism, among others. 🙂 Hope this helps!
