the damping/suspension system is very different to other cars; the damper fluid shifts when you turn or need the car to handle to the outside dampers so you would have softer inside suspension and harder outside every time you go around a corner. Clever.
I wish every flappy paddle worked like this. My very specific reason being that I can only have my left hand on the steering wheel all the time since my right one is busy operating the gas/brake lever that I need as a paraplegic!
2 areas of enquiry (look at me, multitasking): 1 - what options are on this particular, and are there any options that you wish it had/did not have? 2 - besides only have 2 seats, are there any sacrifices you have had to make, using this as your daily driver?
What about the underground carparks? Can the MP4-12C cope with the slopes in an underground carpark and are you able to open the scissor doors without damaging them on vent ducts hanging from the ceiling?
This rocker system was developed by Ferrari on Schumi's F1 car. It was first spotted during the Malaysian GP when Micheal was seen up shifting with his left hand while using his right hand to adjust the brake bias.
The rocker paddle is brilliant, and I think inspired by F1 cars from 99 or so, they had that rocker paddle cut by electrical discharge. About the lag a race in 5th gear from 30mph with a car with no lag like a ZR1 would be a better answer. And you can see the power thundering when rpm's rise so that's the lag, not like in old cars where you had almost nothing.
I'm left handed and drive, not a 12c though! But I did an F1 simulator once and shifting in that felt natural, so I wouldn't have thought they would reverse it, just because if there is only one option you have to learn it just like anyone else would learn it if they had never driven a paddle shift car before.
Yes please braking and safety related tests such as swerving to avoid hazards, accelerating out of trouble. Do some safety PR for all us super car owners that get dirty looks on the school run
Great video as always, love the car. One question though ... if you had the choice of what colour, would you take that horrid orange if it was your own car? Fashion first ^_^
I quiet like the rocker thing on the flappy paddels. When james may was in this car on topgear about a year ago i wondered to myself "why the hell is the paddle moving on the other side" but now i know cheers :)
In TopGear, Jeremy Clarkson said the Mclaren 12C has the most beautifully crafted interior and one of the best animated infotainment system along with the very best supercars in the world. I wish EVO reviews the interior and the infotainment system of the car in order to prove if that's true. Thank you.
A nerdy explanation for no lag is the math we get at gas pumps. It is naturally mastered in a 1.8L four cyl, a 2.7 L six cyl (Porsche world record) and for an eight cyl, a 3.6 is ideal, but the mass needs overhead, so mclaren gave it....a 3.8L. Today those engines are returning, the tune needed a very fast clock in the past, or just blasted with boost.
Question: Is the manual mode truely a manual option. Or will the car deny you a downshift if it thinks the revs are too high. Or will it hold the revs untill the car breaks down or upshift even if you didn't pull the pedal?
This guy is very very good. He should have more of a presence on the channel. The car itself has always puzzled me-it is remarkable in its delivery, its high tech factor, and many other points, but is so uninspiring in its looks. I wonder if that was the intention. Regardless, it is a very commendable effort on the part of the engineers who designed it.
Hey Nick . How good is the traction and grip this car manages to achieve when you launch it . Is it easy to drive at high speeds ? Is it stable at speeds above 300 km/hr ?
Hi Nick, I would like to know what kind of DIY maintenance operations have you done in these months and if the 12C is or not a car designed to have this kind of practicality as well. Then, I would like to know if it has a spare tyre and, because I think it has a space saver, how the launch, traction and stability controls behave when a smaller tyre is mounted on the front axle and on the rear one. Cheers.
Nick I'm living with an F430 as a daily driver and have had no issues do you think the era of the practical super car is here (at least with the so called junior super cars) and what has 18,000 miles depreciation done to the value of your car?
Nick, did you have any problems with the door opening sensor when it is dirty with mud or dust? I heard that the 2013 models are coming with button instead of the sensor, is that right?
I really enjoyed this (and the other 12C) videos! But I think you missed the point of the lag, once you are on the throttle for a while, sure you will have linear power building. The question on lag IMO is more how long does it take between flooring and getting full power at e.g. 3k RPM in 2:nd gear? Is it instant (i guess not) or does it take
I drove a early production version at a track rental thing and the predictive sensing paddles that it had were horrible. It was trying to think of what gear you wanted and even if you left your hands off of them some times you had to pull the paddle twice to get a down or up shift. Is this issue resolved on current production cars?
Can you demonstrate a brake test against a 'normal' car like say a vw golf, it would be interest to see to extra stopping power of the air brake, cheers scott
I have a question i'd like to get an answer from evo on. what happens if you accidentally shift down a gear at too high an rpm? will it lock the rear? or does it prevent that from happening with all its fancy electronics? the reason i ask is the fact it is not as intuitive as the h pattern gearbox's of years gone by.
QUESTION - Have you gotten bored of it or at least numb to the sensations it provides? By driving a super car every day do you become less aware of how super it is? Do you know want something faster?
You know what you demonstrated was not turbo lag right? Turbo lag is response from off-throttle whilst at high revs, e.g. when taking a corner you might roll off the throttle but still be at 6k rpm, foot to the floor on exit and in an 80s turbo car you'd have to wait for the turbo to spool, going from 100 to 300 bhp in half a second. If you went from 2k rpm in an old turbo you wouldn't notice lag but the power delivery would be a little peaky.
Some supercars allow you to hold the left paddle under braking and the gearbox will change gear as soon as the revs have dropped to the right level. Does anyone know if the McLaren does this?
The bigger the turbo, the more lag. This is why twin turbos are an option. smaller turbos, but two of them to make the same power as one big one but with less lag.
Really? Not many paddle-shift systems have a single-piece rocker that allows upshifts and downshifts on both sides. Nick clearly explained why this was a neat and occasionally useful feature, similar to a sequential stick in racing cars which feels very natural to push forward to change down under braking. He got to 'the fucking point' within 1 minute and 20 seconds.
I know that this is a supercar. But how good is the optional Meridian Sound system? I mean as good as a NAIM in a Rolls Royce or Mark Levinson in a Lexus? Or just the fact that this is a supercar so that sound system can be poor and it's ok?
Can that rocker switch be reversed for someone left handed by the factory i.e. left paddle pull to go up a gear and right paddle to downshift ?? !! Referring back to an earlier video, there was a no luggage sticker in the space behind you. Is that because you are better getting some bespo0ke fitted McLaren luggage for the front boot and behind the seat. Also can you fit some golf clubs or tennis racquets behind you. Or is there a roof rack system for the car for longer journeys / ski trips ?? !!
Every car company should give the buyer a choice between manual and paddle, these companies should be ashamed of themselves, more concerned about speed than driver involvement.
the porsche buttons are very very stupid, they're quite different to this actually; both buttons do the exact same thing when you push and the same when you pull. The mclaren's are inverted.
isc sounds like crap on its highest setting, most people turn it off or put it in its lowest setting. some people turn it up for track use as it can be helpful for throttle control.
I love that Mclaren did that with the shift paddles really nice touch.
the damping/suspension system is very different to other cars; the damper fluid shifts when you turn or need the car to handle to the outside dampers so you would have softer inside suspension and harder outside every time you go around a corner. Clever.
Can you explain how works the lift system ? Philippe.
I wish every flappy paddle worked like this. My very specific reason being that I can only have my left hand on the steering wheel all the time since my right one is busy operating the gas/brake lever that I need as a paraplegic!
Loving the video's with all this geeky information, stuff other reviewers don't usually capture. Thank you
I really enjoy these updates, good fun and intelligent. Well done.

I love that serie! It's my second favourite after diaries :D Keep it up please!
I love these little vids. Great stuff
Always been curious as to how their IRIS system works.. And thanks for the videos.
Excellent review series. Bravo.
Yes please braking and safety related tests such as swerving to avoid hazards, accelerating out of trouble. Do some safety PR for all us super car owners that get dirty looks on the school run
well and sound lays the ears even with headphones
Great video as always, love the car. One question though ... if you had the choice of what colour, would you take that horrid orange if it was your own car? Fashion first ^_^
It's supposed to deny the downshift if the resultant rpm is above the rev limiter; that's a basic rule for all computer-controlled transmissions.
I quiet like the rocker thing on the flappy paddels. When james may was in this car on topgear about a year ago i wondered to myself "why the hell is the paddle moving on the other side" but now i know cheers :)

Yes you're right, more videos on the Prius.
I WANT MORE OF THESE!!!!

Question - Do you find it hard sometimes to open your door if parked between two vehicles?
Is this a really comfortable car? I've saw some reviews saying that it is very comfortable. Wont it affect the handling if the dampers are too soft?
Question: Is the manual mode truely a manual option. Or will the car deny you a downshift if it thinks the revs are too high. Or will it hold the revs untill the car breaks down or upshift even if you didn't pull the pedal?

porsche has those push pull button shifters if you like that stuff.
Hey Nick . How good is the traction and grip this car manages to achieve when you launch it . Is it easy to drive at high speeds ? Is it stable at speeds above 300 km/hr ?
Great videos thanks :) Nice to know how things are to live with not just test on a track then hand back. More!
I want one more than ever now

Minibus... Porsche also has the conventional paddles as well for those who don't like the button shifters.
While cruising at 100 mph top gear , what are the interior noise levels, rpm, and fuel consumption ?
It's damn amazing to me how now a day, you can change gears with 1 thumb and a finger.
It would be great to have an external camera showing that acceleration form 50 mph!
Nick I'm living with an F430 as a daily driver and have had no issues do you think the era of the practical super car is here (at least with the so called junior super cars) and what has 18,000 miles depreciation done to the value of your car?
love love love these 12c videos. do you get a lot of attention by people when you cruise in an orange mclaren?
Nick, did you have any problems with the door opening sensor when it is dirty with mud or dust?
I heard that the 2013 models are coming with button instead of the sensor, is that right?
Lol very nice. 10/10 for that very smooth transition, you had me typing up a response and everything.
I really enjoyed this (and the other 12C) videos!
But I think you missed the point of the lag, once you are on the throttle for a while, sure you will have linear power building.

What is the infotainment software like on a day to day basis? Is the touchscreen easy to use and responsive when driving in town?
Do these for more cars!!
do you need to downshift whenever you break?
Who does the best re-map to boost the bhp up from the standard 600 bhp and what other engine modifications are available?
thank you.
Can you demonstrate a brake test against a 'normal' car like say a vw golf, it would be interest to see to extra stopping power of the air brake, cheers scott
love these vids!!
I love these videos
In some reviews there was a pre-cog of the gears mentioned. Is it really that efficient???
Silly question probably but does it really sound like we hear it does that horrible turbo whine when at a stand still and otherwise?
Would you say the 12c is the best drivers supercar under 250k?
I have a question i'd like to get an answer from evo on. what happens if you accidentally shift down a gear at too high an rpm? will it lock the rear? or does it prevent that from happening with all its fancy electronics? the reason i ask is the fact it is not as intuitive as the h pattern gearbox's of years gone by.
how is the sound system?? does it have airplay?
QUESTION - Have you gotten bored of it or at least numb to the sensations it provides? By driving a super car every day do you become less aware of how super it is? Do you know want something faster?
It would be good if it had Direct Injection and dual scroll variable geometry turbochargers
I have a question. In ur everyday life, do u use auto or manual?
You know what you demonstrated was not turbo lag right? whats it like cruising on the motorway?
How bad is the sat nav?
From 50mph to 170mph in only 5th gear so quickly. Amazing.
Some supercars allow you to hold the left paddle under braking and the gearbox will change gear as soon as the revs have dropped to the right level. Does anyone know if the McLaren does this?
Cool feature
i know this is off topic, but i really like his jacket.....anyone know what brand it is??
More of these boring videos please! These are awesome
Manual gear boxes are great (if you are driving a tractor)
The bigger the turbo, the more lag. This is why twin turbos are an option. smaller turbos, but two of them to make the same power as one big one but with less lag.
Cool stuff!
He knows what he's talking about.
The car's purpose was never to have a super personality. Its one goal was to beat the 458 around a track and it does that. Mission accomplished.
it has 7 gear ?
Really? Not many paddle-shift systems have a single-piece rocker that allows upshifts and downshifts on both sides. It looks like your changing gears on a mountain bike! :)
Turbo lag is not the same as boost-threshold! It's annoying when even the journo's get it wrong.
What you described is boost threshold, not turbo lag.
do some roadtrip do alps, with onboards please:)
compare it against the 991 turbo s
The reason why it doesn't have a turbo lag is because 80% of the torque is available at under 2000 rpm.
You use two hands to change with a stick shift do you then...?
I have a question, Can I have that McLaren please ;)
Do you often see people taking pictures of the car or giving a thumbs up etcetera?
wow one gear, nice
Casual boeing 747 rolls past the window at 1:53
Can that rocker switch be reversed for someone left handed by the factory i.e. left paddle pull to go up a gear and right paddle to downshift ?? !!

would be better with a six speed manual, I just like dumping clutches
This guy is like a British automotive Bradley Whitford
Every car company should give the buyer a choice between manual and paddle, these companies should be ashamed of themselves, more concerned about speed than driver involvement.
Glad to see MP4`s paddles move with the wheel, unlike the 458
maybe this comment is too late for the long term test, but what about doing showing on what's it like during a track day or a long distance trip?
rev limiter in the Turbo.
A proper super car.
The manual would ruin the car. It is meant to go fast. A manual would slow the car down immensely. 1 shift with a manual= half a car length lost.
Nice !!!!
I know you're on a private airfield, but set an example, DONT READ TEXT MESSAGES WHILE DRIVING.
the porsche buttons are very very stupid, they're quite different to this actually; both buttons do the exact same thing when you push and the same when you pull. The mclaren's are inverted.
Dat law breaking

forgot to mention you're reading the messages while driving on a track, do not attempt on public roads
