Alex Higgins was a charismatic flawed Irish genius. Made from similar stuff to George Best. Every player has his own character and his special talent and touches! What Alex Higgins has delivered in his snooker game could not be matched with other players even they’re top players like Jimmy White or Ronnie or Steve or Steven or Ray!
Ronnie speaking of alex higgins in such high regard as he nos deep down he was a better performer and entertainer than he will ever be but higgins couldn't chalk ronnies cue were it comes to success 2 completely different characters but both legends in there own right
Just shows how incredible Higgins was as a player, and what a phenomenal break it was , under the most intense pressure. In my opinion Higgins was the GREATEST shot maker the game as EVER known.
Gareth Parr : Higgins was and is a true legend. Everything followed on from that guy. Dragged snooker kicking and screaming into the 20th century. Just take a look how snooker was being played before Alex and you get the picture.
Jimmy specialized in the trick shots and the impossible shots. But he didn't try very hard to give himself good position, so he had to recover quite a lot, and got good at it!
@@gettingkilt I wouldn't say White didn't try as hard, perhaps in many cases Higgins didn't...generally even lol. But if anything White just wasn't as good or as consistent at positional play as, say Davis or Hendry, or pretty much any top player nowadays...But one also has to take the table condition into account as well, much more responsive cloths and cushions nowadays allow for better maneuverability of the cueball, so immaculate positional play was much rarer in Whtes heyday, that's what made Davis stand out back then, from anyone, not just White. You should probably try to check out some old footage of greats from the 70's and 80's and see how often (compared to today) they broke down in breaks compared to nowadays, even 6 times WC Reardon often required multiple visits to win frames. And I'd think many would challenge the idea that HE didn't try to retain position...the main difference between a player like Reardon/Spencer and Higgins/White though is that the former would play safe _much_ more often, while the latter guys compounded their lackluster positional play with (often) unforced _long-odds_ pots, which when unsuccessful made them look poor. But when successful, made them look utter genius.
Look at the follow through on Alex's shot in 1982. He put everything into it in order to create the cue ball reaction on those slower 1980s snooker tables. Look at Jimmy's final effort. Although it was very well timed and executed, he barely pushed the cue through yet still got the same cue ball reaction. However, this was on a modern day table where the cloths and cushions are faster and more responsive. I'm not criticising either shot because they were both brilliant, but Alex's effort was exceptional not only under huge pressure but also on a heavy cloth.
Alex jimmy Ronnie judd. The musketeers of snooker. Can watch these 4 all day. Miss Alex. Respect to Stephen H and Steve D. For me the greatest 6 players off all time
Old Alex god rest his soul he used to have a long plastic bendable straw go from were he was sat under the floor boards out of the arena and straight to the top row behind the bar from the pub round the corner
The only difference being that Alex put next to no backlift on his cueing....have a look....and it looks to me he didn't screw it, but hit more centre left in the cueball. Kudos to Jimmy for getting the shape of the shot and cueball position the same though. Possibly one of the best matches ever from my two favourite players. RIP Alex.
Here you have two of the greats a a attempting a shot Alex pulled out of the blue, and it took them a few shots to get anywhere near it, no doubt in my mind if Alex had a safety game he would have won more titles, the guy was a natural, and played more to entertain the public but that's the only way he knew how to play.
So what we conclude from this is that, although snooker is a f*ckin hard sport to play well, its even harder to play like Alex, shaking out all the norms.
Of course Alex did it in one take didn't he. Pure skill and ability sober or not, but the pink he potted against John Virgo in a private game and then potted the black one handed show just how good he really was. RIP Hurricane.
I don't even know why they even tried to recreate this shot on today's tables. The table that Alex did the shot on the cloth was like a carpet and the pockets like a bucket, plus pure adrenaline that cannot be recreated in this type of scenario. Example: Even ROS couldn't recreate his famous split for the 147 at the 2008 WC
I actually met Alex Higgins in Belfast Airport late December 99 I was in a wheelchair with a broken ankle he was in a wheelchair in I'll health bless him.. So I asked him about the 4 nations that had just been on.. For some reason I asked him about his best frame ever.. He said to me look up me and Jimmy White break of 60 all out of position... He wasn't wrong
Especially talking about shot making abilities. Ronnie doesnt have that shot making like the 3 other guys u mentioned, instead he has that focus and consistency which is another kind of genius. And Ronnie is the best in that regard, while Alex is the best shot maker
If all of Alex’s opponents had the same amount of alcohol before they played him I don’t think he would have lost a match, with the exception of Big Bill Werbenuik 😂🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
The amazing thig about that blue was that the action put on the white by Higgins was to make it a shot to nothing, hence him ending up 'out of position' as White says, then potting the next red as a shot to nothing as well!
I never want to disagree with Jimmy, who must have watched the shot a million times and he was there! saw it in the flesh! but i don't think Alex moved after the shot or was played with awful cueing. I always thought Alex could pull off the shots the way he did was because he saw the angle with spin, cued straight while he was feathered, then used his momentum with his whole body as following through the cue ball which added to the outrageous spin he got, why he pulled off some magnificent shots! He had the body of a jockey and used his whole body to compensate for power. I think it was the same reason he was not always consistent, as hitting with that amount of power and movement on many shots, as it could cause problems with shots that needed maximum accuracy. I think as he played that way for decades, he adapted for it to work for him more times than not and became more natural, especially with drink, which relaxes you. Many may think i'm completely off but that's my take on it.
All 3 of them are geniuses... For pots like this White with a bit more genius than Ronnie... And Alex a bit more genius than both. Always a very moving tribute from Jimmy when talking about Alex. You can never fail to hear the love and admiration he had for his friend.
I was lucky enough to bump into Alex Higgins in Boots chemist of all places and he even stopped to sign a bit of paper that I had in my pocket, which funny enough had a shopping list on the back 😂😂😂 I still have the bit of paper today which I treasure with my other autographs from Alex Ferguson (2 weeks into the job at Man Utd) and Jack Charlton both obtained at Manchester Airport.

It's only right that Jimmy made the shot since he and Alex were very good friends for many years and had huge respect for each other.
Ronnie loved Higgy as well, 3 Legends
Robbie Wright agreed totally pal 👍
It's true, Alex destroyed Jimmy's career with drink and drugs. He's got a lot to thank him for
I'd watch show of just Ronnie and Jimmy doing this. Legends
Every player has his own character and his special talent and touches!
What Alex Higgins has delivered in his snooker game could not be matched with other players even they’re top players like Jimmy White or Ronnie or Steve or Steven or Ray!
Ronnie speaking of alex higgins in such high regard as he nos deep down he was a better performer and entertainer than he will ever be but higgins couldn't chalk ronnies cue were it comes to success 2 completely different characters but both legends in there own right
Although others have been more successful The whirlwind was my favourite closely followed by The Rocket and The Hurricane.
Just shows how incredible Higgins was as a player, and what a phenomenal break it was , under the most intense pressure. In my opinion Higgins was the GREATEST shot maker the game as EVER known.
No body could play with side spin like Alex Higgins not even o sullivan
Gareth Parr : Higgins was and is a true legend. Everything followed on from that guy. Dragged snooker kicking and screaming into the 20th century. Just take a look how snooker was being played before Alex and you get the picture.
2:46
this is the camera angle that we all need .
No alcohol... at the moment
I think one-off unorthodox shots Jimmy still trumps Ronnie
Jimmy specialized in the trick shots and the impossible shots. But he didn't try very hard to give himself good position, so he had to recover quite a lot, and got good at it!
And Jimmy seems to have learned from Hurricane Higgins, who also had more fun with impossible shots.
Love Ronnie love jimmy but there will never be another Higgins..... Alex that is.... not honest john
For me the greatest 6 players off all time
Jimmy played it perfectly
Old Alex god rest his soul he used to have a long plastic bendable straw go from were he was sat under the floor boards out of the arena and straight to the top row behind the bar from the pub round the corner
The Holy Trinity of Snooker,White, Higgins and O' Sullivan,in no particular Order
JIMMY WHITE THE LEGEND AND ronnie whats his name ;-)
Jimmy's shot was a far better shot than Alex Higgins. Much better position in the balls.
that was a brilliant little video, would have been great to see if either player could have done the whole break like Alex did.
RIP Alex.
Proud of Alex - from Northern Ireland
It’s cool to see how bad ronnie is when messing around like this but in competition rarely messes up
Don’t help not having your own cue which does make a huge difference to almost players. Maybe not so much Ronnie but defo can’t help.
Jimmy my favourite player ever
This channel is light years in front of the rest, especially the BBC .
It's amazing that JW never won a World Championship. He's one of the best shot makers ever
Jimmy is brilliant at these sort of things
Jimmy white was my favourite player. He was something else in the 90s
That Ronnie fella is rubbish 😏
LOL u cracked me up so hard
wtf
Ikr if he doesn't buckle down he will never make a pro snooker player at this rate
Jimmy is my favorite payer of all time what à pleasent man!
Of course Alex did it in one take didn't he. Pure skill and ability sober or not, but the pink he potted against John Virgo in a private game and then potted the black one handed show just how good he really was. RIP Hurricane.
Brilliant stuff.
Two greats like there, surely ronnie is the best ever.
Alex was indeed exceptional on a good day. But equally exceptional was Jimmy. What a talent he had, and still the most exciting player in history
Jim Jim should have been a world champion
He should have won it 3 times minimum. He had the talent.
Pocket size was the same
I actually met Alex Higgins in Belfast Airport late December 99 I was in a wheelchair with a broken ankle he was in a wheelchair in I'll health bless him.. So I asked him about the 4 nations that had just been on.. For some reason I asked him about his best frame ever.. He said to me look up me and Jimmy White break of 60 all out of position... He wasn't wrong
When it comes to raw talent, you've got Alex>Jimmy>Judd>Ron. These are your top raw talents of all time.
How could anybody or rather your nobody thumbs downing this..
Jimmy was one of the best one shot potters ever if not the best.
Carl Roberts Jimmy was a very special player underachiever or not.2nd only to Ronnie on natural ability.
