Since the float will rise to the surface, it's likely that the float, and possibly the filter, will be trapped in the ice near the surface. It will only work if the water doesn't freeze around the filter. I wouldn't count on it working during your frigid Canadian winters.

can this work in a lake that freezes over? i am in central Ontario Canada, winter averages around minus 15 Celsius -15C
