I'd never install an intake over soft sediment since they are nearly always full of decaying organic sediment and bacteria up into the water column. Lakes that have thick sediment layers are generally not going to have clean water. Of course this can be corrected by examining the lake and setting up an ecology that will consume those sediments. This is a much more subtle challenge if the lake has trout that need the cold water in the bottom to survive summer. Yes you could place rock on the lake bottom, but the bacteria and the sediments always find a way up. The easiest answer is to pull water from a clean / rocky bottom.

Any ideas where I could find this? Seems like Lowes and HD are not really selling Schedule 80 anymore and they have very limited selection of threaded pipe even in Schedule 40. Thanks great video.
I am replacing a river pump used for irrigation, the failed pump was a well pump. I have purchased a new deep well pump because I wanted more pressure and expand the irrigation to the 3 acres of property. The water supply is a river. Is there any issue with using a well pump in a horizontal position to draw and supply water for the irrigation? I have watched several of your videos and you have given me good ideas to make sure the pump draws in clean water, avoiding sediment. Thanks
I’m using 3 large screw pumps as means to pull from a large pit of waste water , the problem I’m facing is with the rubber stator as a lot of sharp solid small objects ( pens, nuts are being pulled by the pump and cutting up the stator and scratching the screw, I need a pump that can handle such objects in an efficient and reliable manner

The pump then push the water to a 1000 litter tank 150' away and 20' above water line. I will follow your recomendation about the foot valve but what should be the size of input and output conduits? So far, I've been using 3/4" input and 5/8" at the output....that should explain why the breaker of my generator keeps jumping off... thx

I have raised the foot valve so it’s not sitting at the bottom but My foot valve is still sucking in sediment and small weed particles that are not being filtered out by the screen on the foot valve. What can I do? I have tried placing a sponge around the foot valve screen, however, but this reduces the suction too much and doesn’t allow the pump to build up sufficient pressure. Thx.
Suction lift is measured from the the pump inlet to the surface of the water because that is where the water will naturally fill to. You could put a foot valve 200' down a well and as long as the water level in the well is above 25' a shallow well jet pump will work.
I like your lake pipe structure to mount a foot valve. I was always lead to believe that my foot vale should be mounted so the intake was down, not up as your video option suggests. I would prefer to mount with the screen at the top as is indicated in the first option in your video. I could do it either way as I’m in about 15 ft of water with sandy bottom. Which would be your first choice?

Hi Chris, I'm also in your area, where the lake freezes, so if you weigh this down with the angle iron weight and sink it into >10 feet of water how do you get to take the valve off for winterizing? And re-inserting in the spring, as recommended to keep (exposed part of) intake pipe from freezing?
Redneck fix: You could try a floating/sinking barrel technique. Attach a 5-gallon barrel (I'm guessing about the size, also you need 2 hoses (inlet and outlet)) to the foot valve, fill with water to sink it and air to float it. :)
And it might end up a few cottages/homes away if there’s any current. We’re on a river and I’ve seen large wooden docks go by surrounded by ice in the spring😲

No, a foot valve is all that is needed on a typical jet pump system.

Don't go smaller than what the pump's inlet and outlet are. So if the inlet is 1.25" you should us 1.25" pipe.

Theoretically it should work in any position, but I would advise against putting it upside-down.

I’ve used an Anka foot valve mesh sock for finer debris. Can find it at Home Depot near the foot valves, and it doesn’t affect the system pressure.

Npsh will not allow for 30 to 40 feet of depth for your suction. Max on a normal jet pump 26feet. Unless you have ane injector.

great idea. if its under the ice, and the line is open on the other end, why would you have to take it out for the winter?
