      Imagine Seinfeld hanging out with Hitchens. They may have actually not worked. Which would have been hilarious. Hitchens, who was funny, working with Jerry constantly saying ".....nah, that's not interesting. Do you like cars?" And Christopher endlessly fascinated that Jerry truly has no interest in anything, with his brilliant mind, of substance.

    I always thought Jerry was super corny and just avoided his stand-up and shows. I’m an Always Sunny in Philly fan, decided to try Seinfeld again on a whim and quickly realized THAT was the genesis (or one of them at least) of that style of show. It blew my mind how clever and well-written the characters were. That made me pay more attention to Jerry and now I’m of the opinion the dude is a rare comedic genius. I don’t use that word lightly either…his observations on human behavior are fascinating and you can tell the dude studies people and how they act. His Comedians in Cars show is really no different, he just knows how to appeal to certain type of people and their humor

      You were right the first time, Seinfeld is a shallow superficial unfunny douchebag and David Letterman is just as shallow and phony as Seinfeld. Two of the biggest a-holes in all of teevee history. @@katc5051 So many guests are about pushing their book, movie, etc. (yawn) and the producers' pre-interview get questions which will have canned, stale answers. But when they go off script, that's when Dave's wit is at its best and he engages, rather than just catatonically pitching softballs. And when he's happy, the show percolates.

      Roger Edgerton An entire episode about masterbation wasn’t pushing the envelope? What? Maybe you weren’t alive back then, but many Seinfeld stories were very risqué at the time they aired. Seinfeld may have chosen not to work blue on his sitcom but his character was definitely obsessed with sex, he even mentions on an episode how he’s gotten women pregnant, yet he has no kids (I’m sorry, those records are permanently sealed), implying abortion. If you look at what was acceptable to say on network tv in the ‘90’s, Seinfeld constantly pushed the envelope, although they did it in a subtle way to get around the censors.

    Letterman is prolly the best among the talk show hosts lot. He doesn't overindulge his guests nor does he slight them, He maintains control of the conversation in a positive way, bringing the best out of his guests, while not depending on gimmicks and keeping the humor healthy. Unlike his contemporaries such as Leno, he's never been flamboyant or loud. He's always been crisp and witty, without an ounce of insecurity.
    Can't think if any current talk show hosts can fill his shoes. He's truly one of his kind.

      @@n0tk0sher Even if he did slight people, which he certainly did, it was always very quick witted and comedically acerbic jabbing. Also his show was irreverent and sardonic in nature. Much more in the first two decades but it was always askew. Always trying to keep the audience on its toes. If anyone had a slightly similar show, Conan, it was mostly a carbon copy of the Letterman blueprint. Everyone else was pandering to celebrities. Like Leno and certainly the unwatchable Fallon. Carson was the standard and Letterman turned it upside down and created something unique and fresh. For my money Letterman was the best to ever do it.

    Dave is great with intelligent guests. You could tell he was getting tired of the ditsy actors. When he is challenged and angry he is at his best. I think that's the most common thing between Craig Ferguson and Dave....they are the only two late night people who could easily sub in and do 60 Minutes

    • @craigjgomez
      @craigjgomez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I am not sure you understand Dave or his style. What you perceive as, "getting tired of ditzy actors" is all part of Dave's success. Dave has last say on who get's booked as a guest. There are pre-appearance meetings where both discuss the options of topics. Even the perceived irritation Teri Garr brought to the show was all staged. The goofiness of Nicole Kidman staged. The occasional outburst from an audience member, staged. It isn't like you describe. The comedic genius of Dave is built upon quirkiness and awkwardness. Dave is great with all guests otherwise he wouldn't keep inviting them back. And seriously, "challenged and angry" is simply false. It is you not getting Dave.

      @Versaith33 I agree with much of what you say. But I would suggest that you're mostly describing older NBC "LNWDL" -Dave, not CBS "TLS" -Dave, and what he's doing now on Netflix recently. His chosen interviewees are mostly vapid, even more pretentious and ditsier musicians, instead of actors.
      Dave's early/mid-80's NBC show became ironically better when he and Robert Morton couldn't get the A-list actors on the program, so they filled it with more lesser-known but cerebral, artsy, and historically-important in their field type guests; which is what made the show so refreshing, underground and worth staying up for. Not unlike what some of the better and ballsier YT'ers are doing now, nearly 40 years later.
      Personally I think once DL got hooked up with CBS/Viacom/MTV, and had access to all of the people from the music world he grew up admiring from the 60's/cheaper pop-culture until today, sort of warped his brain and taste in what made a really good late night show, abandoning some of the edgier/Dada anti-comedy and engaging guests, for the safety of being a modern day Ed Sullivan/part-time comedian/veteran "broadcaster".
      Fans of his NBC show, only knew the "comedian" Dave and a great interviewer when "serious". The Ed Sullivan/"broadcaster" part, wasn't really needed. That change in Dave, happened after he went to CBS.
      For most Letterman hardcore fan archivists, the night he had The Foo Fighters on in the mid-90's on CBS and acted as if they were the second coming of the Beatles, it was pretty easy to see that just 10+ years since his first show on NBC in '82, Dave had begun to run out of inspiration, was far too enamored/eased-off with mediocre but "cooler" talent, and his new show had officially reached the point of "jumping the shark".

    And of course there will be other art pieces similar but different but the most unique ones that stand out.... Would be very hard to duplicate!
