by the time I'm able to afford this they may be pushing 16k or something, maybe then I can get either one of those for cheap xD (the price isn't actually *that* bad considering all it comes with when comparing to cameras like the FX6 and REDs, but I'm not near that price bracket yet either 😄
Your review really showed the benefits of 8k. The smoother, almost silky skin tones alone make 8k my choice. The detail in the shadows (that breakup sh!t is a pet peeve) make it a lock. Great review! Now that price tag...hmmm...it absolutely worth it I believe. Too bad I left that 12k in my other pants.
It seems to me that DJI are steadily entering and mostly dominating all the niche/specialist aspects of the camera market. Gimbals, drones, micro gimbal/camera, image transmission/monitoring, action cams, and now here a full-size gimbal/cine cam. When/if they decide to finally enter the "regular" camera companies' territory, those companies will really have a fight on their hands. I bet the marketing/planning departments at Canon/Nikon/Pana/Red/BMD etc all keep just as close an eye on DJI as they do each other.
Yeh other brands are now starting to imitate what DJI have created… the charging cases of the wireless microphones etc very good job DJI. It makes everyone step up the game which is exciting for us
Ronin 4D is so impressive to me this year! First it released Ronin 4D Flex, then it released an electric zoom lens, and then it joined the L-mount alliance. Then ProRes RAW also returned, and now the ACES workflow has been opened up.Good job, DJI ! You are always on the move and always innovating!
I've been writing about the potential for modular cameras for a couple of years, it really is the way more of them should be going. Not just because we all have our own specific needs, but also because it could cut down on e-waste and make camera production more sustainable generally.
I love the 4d as a camera system, it's a great way to work especially if you're on a mid sized/budget crew, but I feel like the main sticky point with the DJI ecosystem right now is the lack of scalability across their product line at the moment. I think with the new osmo they're starting to fill in some of those other weight classes like they did with drones, but it'll still be a few years before they're totally there. The DJI prosumer level DSLR parallel camera will be the dropped gauntlet that makes other cam manufacturers stand up and take notice, whenever it comes.
Man... so many reasons to love this camera coming from a Lumix shooter. Everything I think i've ever wanted in a camera system and considering the price point, it's actually reasonable!
As a technology aficionado, I can confidently say that Ronin 4D sets a new standard for excellence. It's a masterpiece of engineering, and every aspect of its design reflects precision and innovation.
SAM!!!! how cool was that!!!!….to see your face on the official DJI thumbnail testing their latest cam. CONGRATS MAN! I been following you for a long time. SOOOOOO frigin cool to see you make that HUGE jump. You deserve it. I’m not far behind you man. Let’s go 2024!
I love it... I have heard some issues on software, not sure if they fixed that yet, but too not have to balance the gimble on EVERY DAMN CHNAGE OF ANYTHING is soooo nice... Internal NDs, quickly attach a new lens, quickly switch from the 4 axis to some other gear.... As long as it has the proper ports, I would use this as my everyday talking head / streaming rig along with more creative stuff. Love the look.
Personally the thing that made my month is definitely the ACES support. It was always tricky getting DJI into those ACES workflows especially with a ton of cameras.
During the production of The Creator, the FX3 was often mounted on a DJI gimbal on a shoulder rig. It sounds counterintuitive, but the stability and ease of carry makes sense when you think about it.
I like where DJI is going with this. I'll buy one when I get to choose / swap: 1. The sensor 2. The processor 3. The codecs We'll be there in a few years.
S5II(x) measures 13.0 stops of DR when shooting external 6K BRAW with highlight recovery having around 20ms of RS. Ronin 4D 8K measures 13.1 stops of DR when shooting oversampled 4K Prores RAW with dynamic range expansion having around 25ms of RS. Both are pretty much on the same level in that regard.
Nice but the big turn off for me is having invested in expensive RF lenses then not being able to use them and having to buy new 'light' lenses. Realistically, if you're not seriously doing a lot of 'movement' shots, this is overkill. Lovely cam to have though.
Genius, for sure. But only 3 codecs (ProRes Raw, ProRes HQ, H264)? As a DaVinci user I have to do one extra step for importing ProRes Raw (DaVinci can`t do this so far). A pro cam needs pro audio ins, right?
Hello Sam, I also bought the same L-mount adapter ring for Ronin 4D. But I found that if you install a 35mm f/1.8 lumix lens or a 24mm f/1.8 lumix lens, you can see more obvious barrel distortion on the Ronin 4D. I don't know if this is normal? And I also searched all the videos about L-mount adapter rings, but none of them seemed to mention this issue. I'm not sure if I'm the only one having this problem. Thank you so much!
Not sure.if you mentioned the recording formats but this might be one of the reasons it will NOT be used in big productions. Is biggest format is ProRes Raw which doesn't offer all the flexibility of RAW formats like BRAW or Red RAW.
Great concept! The posibility of changing just a part of the camera sounds really good. BUT. It's heavy! Play with it before and practice first. And you would like to check the list of the COMPATIBLE MEDIA, because most of the resolutions and codec combinations ARE NOT WORKING with an external SSD like Samsung T5 or T7 so you will be limited to their own Pro SSD
Love your review/opinion on this... Exactly my thoughts. I have a question for you! Have you tried to film in 4k h.264 with this? I am wondering if my M1 Mac Book could handle the footage in Final Cut Pro, because I will not be using RAW for most of my client projects.
@@SamHolland Thank you very much! So even without proxies it kind of works for you? I can play back h.264 from my sony A7III and h.265 from my DJI Mavic Pro 2 without problems. I just thought, maybe the higher dynamic range will make it stutter or something. Appreciate your quick reply!
How are you all working 8K into your workflow? What cards are you using for the 8K content? I am worried to move up from 4K because of all those overpriced necessities at the moment. My laptop is 2021 4TB 64GB M1 Max.
I hate when pseudo filmmakers use the word "cinematic". It's just a buzzword to sell something. This camera is no more cinematic that the canon, Blackmagic or any other cameras. It's all about skill and technical knowledge. Of course there is a threshold that when you cross you image looks good "professional" but an old camera like the 5d mark iii with magic lantern can achieve a similar or even a better looking image if you know what you're doing.
maybe one day 😮 man this camera system is something else. I hope other manufacturers eventually jump on board or something, especially from Lumix lol I know they teamed up too but the smoothness of the gimbal, so ideal for a one-man-band type of videographer especially. Why can't they just release an actual 4-axis gimbal like their 3-axis RS3 etc.?? Someone release that at an affordable pricepoint please lol
This is wrong question to ask and I hate when content creators use this words “who is this camera for?” This camera is versatile you can shoot a movie, music video, documentary and so on. For example who was thought Sony Fx3 can do job like big budget movie and who was was thought portable camera Sony Fx3 cannot do the job . Have you watch the movie “The Creator” is shot in Sony Fx3 and I think Ronin 4D have lots more features than Fx3, I think this camera is for everyone. (why we always want big bulk heavy weight camera like Red and ARRI to job done? Why not reduce on production cost on camera gear and team.)
Gimbals are awkward and dorky looking, hard to swap between steadicam and stix. But this chicken machine comes with so many configurarions I think I could buy the whole system to serve all my solo shooter needs and still have money left over for glass. I LOVE Sony F9,A7s3 and Blackmagic 6k. However, after I'm done building it out, Im broke and its still a clunky ass frankensystem. This DJI Chinesium is really making me consider switching. As far as 'cinematic' images go, I could shoot on anything and maeke it look good, cuz of lighting, which isnt sold with this camera system😂 Pretty impressive.
Every time dji upgrade camera sensor, they upgrade their camera body too. not just in osmo series camera, they do that to drones too since phentom4. thats how tech company makes money. they best they can do for us is to save the lens mount and battery type for their next generation camera.

I can already say, "Alexa, straighten the rug in the living room." Okay, I made that bit up, but you know what I mean...
But before we get too excited, this is not a general purpose camera out of the box-especially for commercial work. Without the expansion plate (Adorama has it on back order till February), there’s no balanced audio inputs or dedicated timecode connection, nor does it have an SDI output for connecting a third party, low latency transmitter. It’s an interesting concept camera with an excellent sensor, but if you need to operate outside DJI’s walled garden, this would be a limited purpose C-cam, not something to build a filming business around.

@Aceofthedynasty in multiple years I honestly wouldn't be surprised if AI could undo motion blur issues and make digital stabilization as effective as mechanical. Unless we get a 360 cinema camera that can shoot in low light at high frame rates and high shutter speeds while keeping a clear image cropped in at the same time manage to have bokeh, with really good post processed motion blur that doesn't take too long. We are far from having AI take over the physical advantages of gimbals that even the best 360 cameras now can't beat.
