- (MUSICAL SPOILER ALERT!) The Turret Opera from the end of Portal 2.
As suggested by @DerAssAssinenMetzger.
Based on an arrangement by the talented Sebastian Wolff. Check out his website ( sebastianwolff.info/ ) or his TH-cam channel ( / germanseabass ) for all sorts of cool video game and movie covers!
The software this creation is based off of is open source and available here: github.com/SammyIAm/Moppy2

• Make Your Own Musical ...
I'd love idea for new songs to perform (or even original pieces if any of you are composing-inclined); if you have any leave 'em in the comments or message me. A word of forewarning though, not everything works well on floppy drives (they're pretty finicky as far as musical instruments go), so while I will consider every one of your suggestions, not all of them end up making good music.
Check out this playlist for my other musical floppy drive creations: • Musical Floppy Drives - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี
The best part about this is that it's pretty much how the song is supposed to be made, hell maybe even how it would sound if it was made by real turrets.
very shooty and apologetic about it.
Considering the fact that they have speakers and voices, unlikely.
Jack Shit You can clearly see the turrets use their opening sides to produce different notes by varying the speed they move them at.
Tim Stahel
That's definitely a weird sound coming from the motors, given the noises they make normally.
Tim Stahel I feel like real turrets would be equipped with theremins to sing. If that were the case, it would even make sense why their "arms" would have to move to play music.
This proves you can use almost anything as an instrument
*raises hand*
Is mayonnaise an instrument?
Yes
Liam S. if you dont use logic, then yes!
fap. fapitty fap
*blows the dust off my two floppy drives* it is time
Have fun with chords :)
LMFAO
So THAT'S how turrets sing!
Malamute456 THAT's why they move their gun mounts when they sing!
+BurningApple Their gun mounts must be stepper motors, which explains the characteristic whining right before they fire.
That’s kind of how it works.
@@FutureAIDev2015 you are correct! Then they turn it into movements that provide those sounds to accompany their voice, altering it to sing. Look, some things may be wrong but that was 10 years ago.... I haven’t made them sing since. Their voices ever since they sung “Mia cara Addio!” Tend to get me teary.
with auto tune
I love how it works similarly to how the turrets themselves do it with their gun-wing thingies ^^
do it again but power it from a bank of potato batteries
eddiekoski genius
....
"because I am a potato!"
And these are the turrets of the 1990's!!! Think how far aperture has come since this ;)
Dude I wonder what will be the future relics like these awesome drivers. Who would guess we would make music with them haha :D
Depending on the complexity, it takes a few hours to arrange the music to be suitable for floppy drives (anywhere from 2 to 6 hours probably). Recording is pretty quick as the drives don't make mistakes, so one take is usually all that's needed (the one time I tried to involve myself in the video took several takes 'cus I kept screwing something up).
It just sounds like you have turrets in real life. The mechanical sounds really fit the tune.
Kudos, very well done.
The fact that the turrets' mechanical movements are reflected by their singing makes this fit perfectly! Well done!

Lol, it's definitely real. Actually the whole reason I started doing this was because one of my coworkers thought the "Phantom of the Floppera" video was a fake and I set out to prove him wrong. =P
"Science isn't about why! It's about why not!"
I don't know how I got here but this is still amazing
Welcome to the internet .
Im just kinda annoyed that the midi file that he used for this song was built a bit incorrectly
So geeky! I love it!
This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Thanks for explaining it. I always love the marriage of technology with music in creative ways!
A true master of any craft or art never blames his tools.
Don't ask how, but this completes life for me.
Mr.Fallout don't worry, you aren't alone
GREAT JOB! I absolutely enjoyed this and I LOVE portal and the ending music so much!!

This is amazing.
this is something you would expect from portal
This is just so amazingly appropriate.
This is incredibble!
This song could make anyone cry.
this song was practically composed for the median of floppy buzz
That is amazing, this should be featured somewhere.
It's Aperturiffic!
I get it an aperture science joke
This is SO awesome !
It's so.. beautiful..
Its beautiful how an everyday noise can be used to make music.
Wow. that is awesome!

Hm, I thought I recognized that arrangement! Great work!

I salute you, you amazing person, you.

this sounds real authentic
You should totally do one of the guitar songs from S.T.A.L.K.E.R!
happy there are people like this in valve community :)

Floppy drive music and Portal 2's ending.
Words cannot describe how much I love this fusion.
The top ones look like very happy and tiny little faces.
Have you ever head a computer cry?
The Hard Drives of the Turrets...
Creepy kinda Awesome! :D
And this goes in my favorites... :)
Or lack there of, definitely... In my later videos I put the microphones off-center so that the drives in the front were "louder" than those in the back. It's crude, but at least ensures that the melody can be heard about the background chords.
awesome...
I was wondering why this sounded so cheery and then realized I had this at 2x speed because of another video.
Hey dude, excellent stuff, i like turret opera too, PORTAL FAN :D
beautiful (:
The 90's (tears) so beautiful
Figuring out how to get the drives to play music, writing the software, and building the rig, took a few weeks of evenings after work. Actually getting this particular song working took only a few hours, thanks mostly to @germanseabass 's excellent arranging skills (check out his channel in the description).
Nice!!
@mpme1509 It is not, sadly, for sale. However, you can check out the link in the doobly-doo for the software I used, and shoot me a message if you've got any questions on the specifics. =)
