I am about to bind off a lace shawl and the last one I blocked ended up sideways. Now I understand why and how to avoid the same mistake! Your video-tutorials never disappoint ❤️. I can't thank you enough!
Absolutely night and day between the before and after. Thank you so so very much for Inspiring me to block a lace shawl I made last year and never blocked!!!
I've been knitting & crocheting since I was 9. Now I'm on You Tube a lot, learning new things every day. I have never blocked anything before. My friend who knits and sells baby clothes always tells me to measure and check gauge and also wash before giving my knits to people. I love making baby clothes and scarves for people at work. I dont do it to sell. Now I'm learning about blocking. I thought it would mess up the yarn if I wash it and give it to people, it might look used, but watching your shawl video, it was a massive difference after blocking. Thank you for the detailed video.
Thank you Allison Thomas! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my new channel for live-streaming - Suzanne - Off the Cuff th-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
Yay Bakersfield! Im a brand new knitter and this was so helpful! Im working on a lace shawl for my mother for her 50th wedding anniversary and this video answered so many questions!
How wonderful, Cindy, I'm sure your mom is going to love and treasure the shawl! You know, I also have a Facebook page (same name) that is filled with supportive knitters at every level and we love helping new knitters; please join us if you're interested.
congrats for all your efforts..I am from Turkey, İstanbul and much fond of knitting lace shawls..unfortunately we do not have block devices here..anyway I will find a way to follow you..It helped a lot..thanks again..
Thank you for posting this video. I have never blocked anything other than a gauge block, so this really helped me to understand the process. I hope I have enough pins for my Summer Flies shawl.
I feel so silly now. I've given up on SO many lace projects, thinking I was using the wrong yarn or otherwise doing something wrong, because I couldn't see the pattern. It never occurred to me that my issue was that I wasn't blocking. This is SO helpful, thank you!
Thank you!! I've been procrastinating on blocking a lash shawl I finished months and months ago, this is a great explanation and great motivation for me to actually do it!
Thank you for this very helpful video. I just knitted my first lace shawl, and I am getting ready to block it. I watched a video before yours that used lace blocking wires, and I think I will use your method instead as it looks easier. Thank you again for this great video. Wish me luck.
What perfect timing Michelle Turner! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my second channel - Suzanne - Off the Cuff - where you can find my live streams and interact with me. th-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
Exquisite! I'm clueless on blocking my acrylic lace-like rectangular shawl. They say I need to steam block it. I think of wet block it first, then while it's still wet, I feel like throw a bucket of hot water to it as an alternative to steam block.
Thank you so much for this! I am blocking the Glitz at the Ritz shawl by Helen Stewart today - it's soaking at the moment, with all its 300 gorgeous 6/0 seed beads :-). Can't wait to see the finished blocked piece of art!
@@SuzanneBryan - It is! I'm very happy with it. I used a tonal emerald green wool with iridescent seed beads. I blocked it exactly as you suggested (I love the tip to measure one side and then make sure the other side is the same), and I even pinned the individual picot stitches along the edge. Thanks, Suzanne - I learn a lot from your videos :-).
So much fun to watch the magic of blocking. I always love when I unpin something and feel the Transformation of the fabric. I have been curious about those rubber blocking mats. Interesting that you say it dries faster. I have one of those old Sew EZ mats with the gridded fabric (No longer manufactured. They were made by a table pad company.). Maybe it does take longer to dry but I love the grid for measuring and lining up. I was trying to buy another Sew EZ for larger projects and found they were discontinued (I can't even find a used one on EBay. No one will part with one, I guess!). So I was considering the rubber mats. I think they now make gridded rubber mats. Alternatively I was going to order a table pad and cover it with gridded fabric.
Thank you! Be sure to subscribe to my channel if you haven't already, and share with your friends. That is the biggest thanks you can give me! Happy knitting!
betty r This was great, thanks, I've been looking for "knitted clothing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Veyillian Noncarlett Eradicator - (search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my neighbour got excellent results with it.
Hello, I’m from Australia 🇦🇺 I loved watching your tutorial.I loved it so much I had to subscribe. I have been knitting some lace wraps and ponchos for years and wondering why they didn’t look as good as they could of when completed. I made a cardigan for my son a while back and used the blocking technique for the first time, it was awesome. However, this is the first time with my wraps. I would like to know if you’re not please with it completely the first time can you reblock or would it be too stretched. Thank you kindly.
Yes, you can steam block a silk shawl. The heat from the steam will not hurt it. BUT! You can not stretch silk when it is wet. Silk is weak when it is wet. My preferred method would be to pin your shawl out, when it is dry. Then steam or use a damp towel to lay over it, and then allow it to dry.
Thank you so much for this great video and the time and effort you put into this, it is a great help! I am currently knitting my first lace scarf and this will definetly come in handy.
Thank you. What a difference. And I always wondered about re-blocking the garments after washing them. Do they need to be blocked every time. Love your tutorials. Happy knitting to you as well.❤️🇨🇴
I am making a lace wrap. My wrap looks crummy compared to the finished picture. At the end of the instructions it says to wet block the lace wrap. This is just what I need to give it the finished delicate look!
Thankyou for the video. I’ve been knitting for sixty years, but I’ve only blocked once before... an acrylic yarn on my ironing board. It made a real difference to the garment... my first ever triangular shawl. I did what you did with pins, steam ironed it under a cloth, in sections. It would have been so much better on a table top 🥴
Hi, can i after blocking my shawl just sprinkle water all over my shawl then let it dry ? I mean without soaking or put it in water before blocking ...Thanks 😍
U are the master of knights! ❤❤❤all your projects are beautiful! If i do a skirt like this, in lace, i have to block it like this? Thank you! O, i m from Romania 🇷🇴! 😘❤❤❤
Hello, thank you for being such a great teacher. I just blocked my first pie e of knitting after watching your video. What kind of space do you use to block a shawl that is a 120inches by 27 at its deepest part? Thank you, kim
I use those large gym floor mats that connect together like puzzle pieces. Each one is 2 foot by 2 foot. You can connect them together to make all kinds of rectangular shapes. They are inexpensive.
Thank you so much Madam Bryan for the tutorial, may I ask if this works for the shawl I created with 30% extra fine wool +70%viscose yarn? my concern is that viscose is plant base fiber plus synthetic fiber, would this material affect the overall blocking outcome? or shall I not blocking it at all.
I would knit a swatch and block it first to see how it looks. Silk and mohair should look great blocked, but I always block a swatch first just to make sure.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial! I have a question: Do I need to block the shawl every time I wash it? I´m selling a shawl and I´ll block it, but I don´t think the person will be able to do it by herself. Thanks!

I could watch and listen to you teach ALL day! I love that you get the point, but still take the time to really explain the "why".
Wow, thank you!🧶

You are so welcome!
Such a gorgeous shawl. The person who knit this, can take pride in her work on a future heirloom.
She has not seen it yet. I am sure she will be thrilled with the outcome. It is so beautiful.

What a gorgeous shawl!
It is lovely isn't it? Thank you!
Incredible watching your work!

Very interesting. Let me know how it works.
Fabulous. I'm learning so much from you!

Thank you. That was super. Love the shawl. I also found the blocking wires awkward. I must try and get blocking pins for the top as well.
Wonderful! Happy knitting.
Stunning!
Thank you, RR! ❤️

I want to block a cotton/linen shawl. Any changes from your very informative info using wool?
Hello, I’m from Australia 🇦🇺

You can absolutely reblock. If it does not turn out to your satisfaction, just do it over. The wool is very resilient. 🧶
Would you steam block a silk shawl? Thank you for your excellent videos Suzanne!

It will work fine. Your shawl will be lovely with nice drape.
Thank you Suzanne!
Would you recommend doing this with a silk and mohair scarf knitted in brioche, too?
I would knit a swatch and block it first to see how it looks. Silk and mohair should look great blocked, but I always block a swatch first just to make sure.

Do you have a video on how to block a circular shawl?
Yes - th-cam.com/video/TrN-3JTwZyI/w-d-xo.html
Hi, thanks for the tutorial! I have a question: Do I need to block the shawl every time I wash it? I´m selling a shawl and I´ll block it, but I don´t think the person will be able to do it by herself. Thanks!
Yes, it gets easier with practice.
