Having been a yarn crafter for nearly 50 years, I've never blocked anything. I always thought it was too much like hard work, but now that I've seen how much better a project looks after being blocked, I think I'll have to rethink this whole blocking thing...ya never know, it might just make a difference to some of the gear I make too. ;)) Thank you Toni for explaining it so clearly, and making it look so easy to do. :))
@@amypetty5013 as someone who can't afford expensive yarn, I work exclusively with very inexpensive acrylic or cotton...I wash everything in cold water, with anything that might be a bit delicate(in either stitch or style) going into a wash bag or pillow case, and never had any problems with anything losing shape... I owned exactly 1 non-acrylic yarn garment, it accidentally got put in the dryer and came out about the right size for a 18" doll...so no, I don't have problems with not blocking anything, and the shape holds just fine...ta very much...
First of all, LOVE the seductive soak music 😂😂 Second of all, this was SO helpful!! I was always intimidated by wet blocking but this makes it easier to confront doing.
Love the video. I've never blocked, but I will be starting. What truly amazed me was your kitties. If I had left a project to dry overnight, it would have been unpinned, full of hair and probably hidden somewhere!
I had not knitted in 10 years. And had never needed to block a project. Just finished a baby blanket that needs blocking. Searched and watched several videos and yours was the best!!! Short, sweet and entertaining. Just set my 20 minute timer. I don’t have cats, so my dog will get my attention and pets 😊. Maybe I’ll take up crocheting to follow you more!
I loved this for two reasons. 1. Educational and funny. 2. I have a male orange and white cat and a black female cat. And they look so much like yours it was weird to see them on the videos!
Great tutorial! Can you do a follow-up one where you teach how to keep your cats off your project? There's no way my cat will be as well-behaved with my projects as yours lol. Your cats are both seriously cute! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and humor, you're a treat to watch and learn from.
LOVE this video and the breaks in between- pet cats. At the end the black kitty was chasing the tape measure!❤ My cats do that too! Thank You for explaining everything!
Greetings from Canada. Dear Tony, I'm so glad I found your channel. You are so sweet and such a great teacher. I just started crocheting and am learning so many things as I watch each TH-cam video. Everyone was talking about blocking and I had no idea what that meant. A quick search in TH-cam land and I found your video and channel. I'm about to hit that subscribe button but before I did I wanted to say a big Thank you...ok now I'mma hit that button. 💕💕💕💕💕
Who tf clicked "thumbs down" on this amazing video?! I love you, Toni! Your educational crochet videos are so well done. I have learned much from you and will definitely be learning more! Thank you for creating! :-)
Kathi Johnson back in the fifties when 100%. wool was used, my mother knit everything. When the sweaters etc were washed, they were placed flat on a towel or even newspaper under the carpet and were walked on for days before they were dry. Now this was in Scotland and at that time we had one fireplace as our only source of heat and the papers never lost any ink so they had many uses. Thanks for the memories. I use mostly blends or acrylic or anything that can be machine washed and dried. I am happy to be a baby boomer and I appreciate the many conveniences available to me as I aged. Stay safe😷😷
You're going to make me learn Tunisian. I need to find my family another wife (and parent) so I have time for me. LOL. What music is that in the intro? I'm dying to hear the whole thing.
OMG! This is awesome! I love your cat in the video! I have five barn cats and two feral that come and go for carryout dinner! They never leave a tip either!
I've also crocheted about fifty years and haven't blocked anything. Toni, this is a great tutorial. I enjoyed your easy instructions and humor throughout. Thank you very much. This is going into my saved lessons file.
New to crocheting here and had a lady ask me about blocking in a yarn store. I played it off like I knew what she was talking about but literally had no clue. TH-cam is awesome and so is this video!!! Thank you for posting this and that shawl is beautiful!!!
Toni thank you for your tutorial on blocking. Very helpful. I don’t have any animals and crochet in a clean, smoke-free environment, but personally I still feel hand soaking the crochet item and blocking is a great idea. We handle our projects, sit them on our lap and move them around where we sit to knit or crochet. Giving them a little freshening just feels right. I’m also a soap maker so the importance of washing hands is priority. The oils from our hands transfer a bit to the yarn and I know I’m now being extremely crazy, but it’s all about gifting or selling the item fresh, blocked and ready to go. It just makes it feel complete. Great job 👏 thanks again.
I've crocheted for years without blocking but now after seeing how good that little block looked afterwards yes I would use blocking on things I am giving away
Thank you! I have a total of 5 shawls to do by the end of Nov. Im almost done with my 1st which i started August 1st. It has 74 rows to complete. Plus the blocking ill need to do. I appreciate your video. 😊
Your videos are always amazing. I ‘ve learned so much that I had to buy your book! Now, to block my granny squares & then find one of your videos on how to sew them together!PS: I love the music you chose for this video.
I am new to knitting and am making a wrap. Even though I am following the instruction I noticed it does not look like the picture. At the bottom of the instructions it said to wet block it. Watching this makes me see that that is all my wrap is going to need. Thanks
Thank you for sharing this. I always start blocking by first washing my projects in the washing machine at the laundrymat. Was looking for a more efficient way to do this . I never would have thought to soak in dishwashing liquid. And I definitely would have wrung it out. You saved this scarf and labor of love. I also love comedy behind the scenes.😂
Thank you. I've got several projects I have finished over the last year (2?) that need to be block. A couple shawls. I have never block. I read up on it, saw why I would want to do it, bought the supplies, did projects that should be blocked..... And here I am 1-2 years later and while I've "finished" the projects I still haven't blocked them!! Maybe now that I've seen it with my own eyes, I'll finally get them done. Not hard. Thought I am going to be hard pressed to find the room for my shawls.
Tony, you’re adorable! Just discovered your channel and I’m totally loving it! You’re very informative, easy to understand and follow. I’m very grateful. Thank you
I just saw GGmadeIt's video recently and had to figure out how to do this! I hadn't heard of it!I recently made a shawl for my mom I think this would be great for. Thank you for this great video! What's also impressive is how your cats didn't end up taking a snooze on your shawl!
This was awesome! Not only was it tremendously helpful for my sewing projects, but it was absolutely hilarious 😂. “cue the music” 🤣. I loved it, all of it, including your find something else to do. Thank you!
Absolutely the best educational video for knitting I’ve ever seen; superbly informative as well as entertaining! I heard the song in my head when dunking my cowl. 😊
Beautiful shawl. I agree that blocking is essential; and, at the same time, I have quite a few pieces that are still waiting for their blocking experience. They are so patient.
I discovered Tunisian Crochet through YOU and have ordered my hooks. They get here on Friday. You are hilarious and SO amazing a teaching. I think I found a new favorite thing to do. Thank you!
I knit my MIL a cape for Mother's Day, and having never blocked a knitting project before I've found your channel. Thanks so much for this video! I'm now subscribed
Wow - I'm so impressed and you have two cats as well. Unfortunately, one of mine knows how to open the door. . .I will try this and get the pins and blocking pads. Great video. Thanks so much. And the shawl is Stunning!
I’m hoping to block my soon-to-be-finished FunkyTown Shawl this weekend. I’m a knitter of only two years, but have been careful to follow the steps you outlined. However, I have got to add the Sexy Shawl Shimmy!! Thank you 😊
Thanks Tony! Just like other crochet addicted I knew about wet blocking, I've bought recently all the necessary, but didn't know exactly how to do it and now I know it thanks to you 💜 I always enjoy your tutorials and I learn so many things with you, thank you again 🙂 also love your cats 😻
I really appreciated this video Toni. It looks like a hassle but after all that work making it, it makes sense to take your time with this process. Squeezing not wringing makes a lot of sense:)
🎉Thank you so much for sharing this! Blocking has always intimated me but your process and your delightful commentary have helped eased my worries. Thanks for the helpful info and the buckets 🪣 of laughter 🤭. You da best🎉❤🎉🎊🍾🥳🍻👏🏾
That was great Toni. I just started blocking the things I make. And it does make them longer or larger. They look so good too. I love the way everything becomes even and neat. It just finishes a project. Thanks for another clear and concise video. Loved your Summit presentation.
Thanks for teaching me this technique and making it so fun, Tony! I was definitely nervous about blocking a shawl for the first time and now I'm just excited
I use those same interlocking mats when I block! I've never seen the Knitter's Pride tool though, I need that. I've always used T-pins, that's how my maw-maw taught me. :D Thank you! I'm a firm believer in blocking. It's worth the time and makes a project so much nicer IMO.
omg thank you for not stretching the video out unnecessarily and also being funny

I never block either. So if you wash it do you have to block or dry in this way each time?
@@cristelasoto-cdle84 yup! in a way you’re technically “blocking” it everytime you wash, so you’ll have to dry it flat as well.
Ha…I am not alone with this bad habit!

Agreed! That shawl looks soooo cozy too! And yes entertaining and educational:)
First of all, LOVE the seductive soak music 😂😂
Second of all, this was SO helpful!! I was always intimidated by wet blocking but this makes it easier to confront doing.
A true knitter with this humor and love and enjoyment for her project and her fur babies!! Spot on

When you wrap your project in a towel, put it on the floor and step on it.That gets out a lot more water and doesn't hurt it at all.
Great tip - thanks Kathi!

It was the music with the shawl dip for me!!!!!! I so love your videos!
You're going to make me learn Tunisian. I need to find my family another wife (and parent) so I have time for me. LOL.
What music is that in the intro? I'm dying to hear the whole thing.
Love your channel!! I learn so much from you. I actually smiled big when you queued the music for the dip and the lyric was, "Oh yeah!!"
It’s very pretty. Thanks for explaining blocking to me. I was baffled.
OMG! This is awesome! I love your cat in the video! I have five barn cats and two feral that come and go for carryout dinner! They never leave a tip either!
I hope you can trap neuter and release your ferals. I love the cats in her videos and how they each get a scratch/pet. 😻

OMG KITTIES!!! I’ve never wet blocked anything before, but now I’m going to try it! Thanks so much for such an excellent video!

The people who disliked this video were just too inspired by the sexy shawl shimmy and couldn’t handle it
Thank you! Love your shawl-beautiful colors.
Need to get busy blocking now!….
Great share because so many people do it wrong.
3 years ago I was people haaa🤦🏾♀️
Thanks for this educational (and comedic 😂) tutorial. I just knitted my first shawl and have been so nervous putting my hard work in water
I love your energy Toni ! Thanks for taking the time to post. With love, horses, yarn and coffee... everything's possible! 💖
Thank you! What a beautiful shawl! And an excellent tutorial! You’ve taken the “mystery” out of blocking for me!
This is the best, best video on blocking in the history of tutorials. Oh yeahhhhhhhhh. LOL

Thank you for this video! Had to watch it again just for the cats, I will definitely be trying blocking

I love this video.
I had never heard of blocking either. Thank you so much.

I used the mats and t pins to, but just saw mats with a grid on them and I bet that would be good for the outer blocks.
Thank you for explaining really well. You are a good teacher
I loved this video. Thank you for the advice and the "shawl" shimmy!
