@@Todo_fightingBJJ and Judo have the same roots--Japanese jujustsu. SamBO was based on dozens of different European and Asian arts, Judo being just one of many (SamBO has everything Judo has, and also many techniques which were never a part of Judo)... Meanwhile, Greek pankration and wrestling were MMA and NHB thousands of years ago. Most modern techniques were routine at the ancient Olympics.

I think every form of ground fighting needs someone else

@@Moucam IDK. Just because they cut to compete doesn't mean they couldn't rock an open weight GP like the good olde' days. Khabib just has something else inside him when you see him get after someone on the ground. I'm not saying I wouldn't have tapped, but IIRC he basically made Connor quit (tapped from a cross face) like he realized he didn't have anything for him AND Connor pushed him more than anyone else in the UFC. It's also a whole different world now in that sport. Yes, there were some really talented folks back in the day, but you didn't have anyone close to John Jones level in that weight range. IDK how long you've followed the sport, but the talent pool is insane now compared to what it was even 10 years ago let along 25+. It's also not the fairest comparison to say Kahbib could hold his own to the open weight based on the talent back in the day because had Khabib been around back then, who knows how that would have gone (Without the talent pool of today would he have grown into the fighter he is?). There's a lot to consider. You really can't compare fighters in different eras against each other because of all the factors. Someone that was a great champ back in the day that clearly would get destroyed if you through them into the ring today potentially could rise to the occasion if they had the same training opportunities! It's fun to think about though.
Khabib is an absolute savage though. I watched the sport religiously from ~2003-2012 and then stopped for years. One of the first fights I watched after years was Khabib vs someone and I just couldn't believe how savage he was. It was like his opponent took his lunch money every day in middle school and Khabib never forgot it. As I write this, Khabib on the ground is like the physical manifestation of what is going on in Wanderlei Silva's head when he's got his wild prefight face when he does his wrist role thing.

spongey mat and loose rules gave Gracie every chance. The suit won him the match against Ken Shamrock who really was nothing. Even Kimo gave Royce a rough night, even with refs and cage help he struggled. Someone like Frank Bruno would have destroyed everyone in this sport for years. Without even learning anything. He was just so big/strong and could pretty much do 12 hard rounds.
Now it's more about the drugs they are allowed to take. 190 rules that stop even pushing. And threats of eye pokes to again probably keep boxers out. Not that they pay enough to get anyone decent.

    • @perfectsplit5515

BJJ comes from judo, Japanese jujitsu, and Catch Wrestling. There is a huge difference between judo ne-waza and BJJ. Judo ne-waza does not have the intricate positional hierarchy of BJJ. You need to watch
      -Royce vs Remco Pardoel and
      -Mackenzie Dern vs Savannah Nagi
The behavior of those judoka (who lacked BJJ or Catch Wrestling) is typical of most pure judoka on the ground. They typically go to a loose turtle position or referee's position and try to defend against getting pinned.
When BJ Penn was a BJJ white belt with good basics, he did judo ne-waza with pure judoka and was able to tap the judo black belts. As a person trained in both judo and BJJ, I can tell you right now that BJ Penn was not the only BJJ white belt to pull that off.

I am not sure why most people didn't know ground fighting and grappling was what works before gracies came along. Joe rogan when i first met him way back when he only did tea kwon do, i had studied with jim harrison and learn judo, i met joe in think 1988 area. He would learn over next few years gracie jujitsu by the time i left the military he was training seriously in ground fighting. I liked how ground fighting calms one down it makes you more realistic.
