That chatter sound is when the spool shaft starts to hammer around inside of the loose CZBushing. First of the cast the momentum and balance keeps it "floating" almost, then as it slows the spool shaft is hammering around in there bouncing around.
The "floating" part you're talking about is probably the spool whine and the chatter at high speeds, then turns into a rattle as it slows down. ...like anything on a spindle that's rattling in a loose tolerance and sped up.
Yes that sounds better put. In a bearing supported reel, even though the weight of the bearings doesn't really affect the spool much, they work as a tighter tolerance piece that helps translate the momentum at a much smoother, less rattling motion. Come to think of it, I am gonna tell everyone to buy them where I will have the better reels and catch more fish. I'm starting to not wanna share secrets when morons down here will eat a 5lb female during the spawn.
therein lies the problem of plastics. If this tolerance isn't lost in slight deformations (same reason glass lenses are optically superior to plastic eyeglass lenses - tightening frame flexes them), it is lost during physical stresses of fighting a fish which is why 99% of reels worth using have metal frames and metal drive side cover plates. and some will have metal palm side covers also.
For this reason, I think the new Bantam MGL Shimano reel on the way will be awesome. Its whole body is aluminum and there isn't really a non handle sideplate, only a cover that frees the spool (closer in diameter to the spool's size, way smaller than a full sideplate). The SV103 had an aluminum sideplate and was legendary, my old Tatula Type R (big one) has an aluminum sideplate and it is extremely tough. My Zillion's and most others now only employ aluminum for the frame; both sideplate's are carbon or composite.
To you guys saying "who reels like that" or "he's reeling in to aggressive on the reel" haven't been fishing long enough! If your pitching out a jig to a spot and you miss the hook set and you wanna pitch back asap what do you do??? You reel back as fast and as aggressively as you can to pitch back right! That's what he's doing! He's showing you what the reel can and can't handle! I'm glad I passed on this reel and bought a Curado K. I knew from the start this reel wouldn't be all that! The older Shimano Bushing reel, look at where Shimano went with that!!! They stopped making it! Awesome video keep your reviews coming!
Saltwater fishing requires shielded / sealed ceramic bearings / stainless or marine bronze gears / sealed frames / sealed housing / sealed. Did I mention sealed ? A bearing less system w/ polymer will not corrode, but the compromise is quite obvious -- slop. Van Staal should design a low-profile saltwater baitcaster. Seigler SM "star mag" is probably the greatest conventional casting reel available. 40 lbs. drag, mag control, saltwater / surf specific and easily capable of handling inshore and offshore species.
I can only imagine that slop getting worse as the reel gets used and those bushings get worn down. If any of my reels made that noise I'm returning it.
Surprise surprise, the hype train was real but the reel was not. Gotta hand it to 13 though, they know how to market on the cheap. Can't wait for the full teardown review...
I just bought the big one, the Z3. Very happy with it and have no problems with it nor the “problems” shown here. I have an Abu revo3 beast, toro 2 beast 50 and the Z3 for my swimbaits. Sold my Calcutta 400 after using the Abu. Brakes at max and tension too loose. I can make my 3 & $400 dollar reels do that. They’re only about $125 now.
Out of all the videos I’ve watched about this reel, you are the first person to say anything about that noise. Wish I saw this before I bought it but I can say I bought mine for 89 bucks. For 89 bucks fishes fine but if I paid 200 I would be disappointed.
Every one...Handle knobs, pinin support, handle shaft, spool...and every single last one of them has gaps between the bushing and the part that turns in it..Enough that it is not only visible..but you can feel and hear it. Not sure if that's by design or not. As I have old penns and old shimanos (first low profile shimano ever made 1979) that have metal and plastic bushing with near press fit tolerances.)
I sent mine back to tackle warehouse because it was loud when I wound it...I never even put line on it. When I pulled the spool and wound it it clattered bad. I have a concept c that I really like, but was super disappointed with this reel.
The only advantage I see to bushings is for inshore guys and super cold weather which makes bearings move slower. For me, I live 8 hours from the ocean and it's warm pretty much all year so I'll take a curado 70 or 200 all day
Thank you so much! After seeing your casting the z3 in the snow, I decided to go with it for surf fishing here in California. The lightest bait I will be throwing is the LC flash minnow at 5/8 oz. I’m planning on spooling up daiwa j braid 50lb. Pairing with a 7’11 crankbait rod from irod. I should be receiving it tomorrow! I’ll post a video about it since I’m fishing Tuesday for surf perch. You think that setup will cast the Lc fine? I’ll be throwing bucktails too eventually for striper.
If that's all you're getting you may have an issue I had with the larger z3. Where no matter what I did which included Dremel ing the side plate. There was no freespool (defective.. Like the spool tensioner was 10x too tight) I use 15 to 40 on that reel and get average to very good distance)
0:45 that could also be the spool pin against the "pinion grooves". when the distance between the pinion grooves is machined too wide due to poor quality control the pin just tilts forwards and backward on retrieve. I have a chinese replica of the old zillion 100 with the magforce V- it has that issue. Bought it for 22 Eur in the winter time for capital upgrading, to keep the hands busy. There is no easy way to fix that. But if it's the handle play or knob play, a spacer or two is all you need. But I guess the word of the guy holding the reel is on top.
I thought initially in the vid it could be that. Which is why i tightened the tensioner. And it still persisted. Its a combination of things. The reel is and forever will be rickety since all the bushing tolerances are awful. But it's a tank of a reel. Probably the most indestructible reel in the low profile game today.
You're welcome. I just watched some dudes review on it Kickin their basstv....My god that guy is clueless...saying it's the furthest casting reel he's ever thrown....and needs no thumb no and underspin....That means it's overbraked and by default not casting to it's or any other reels potential....You're gonna love that reel! Congrats on the new baby
+raWr Fishing for 120 based one weight and size it'd be competitive. But every other reel at that price is more solid and refined in hand and on retrieve.. At least the ones I've used. I just tore it down and compared it to a quantum accurist.... Stole a bearing from it too and put it in place of a czb at the base of the handle shaft and it now feels better than new.. Lmao
Contrary to most, I'm with you on the color, forever drooled over the glowing orange show cars that never hit production. I bought a 2008 Z06 Vette when the Jetstream blue first came out and almost traded up to a newer one when the Inferno Orange hit. Then, when the 2014 Stingray was announced I got one of the first ones; red, they didn't have THAT orange. Loved it but still no bright orange. On the fence for the new ZR1 - WAY overkill for the street but bright orange. IMO the cheap Lew's Orange Crush combo is damn pretty, I picked up the green Speed Spool combo last year for a throwdown just because it was such good bang for the buck. Try one out, very smooth with click stops, good line capacity. I've abused a Super Duty Speed Spool for prob 200 hours with heavy woodchoppers on Brazil trips and a bit of slop now but it still works fine.
I noticed they do sound a little like a DC reel when casting. I casted mine for the first time the other day and noticed it. However, the sound it makes while reeling happens to most reels when you reel them fast like that.
@@skinnysfishin7066 - I had no problems with it, but I did end up selling it because I bought too many reels and had to get rid of some. I do prefer a Shimano or Daiwa.
Where can I find more information on this reel being discontinued? Any reason why? You’re the second person to mention it and I can’t find anything online. I may return my Z because of it.
I emailed Matt Baldwin at 13 fishing when the prices dropped. Here's his reply Nick, The current Z model has sold out and we have dropped pricing protection on the product to prepare for new introductions at ICAST 2020. Retailers are free to sell at whatever pricing they desire. When this happens some get a bit crazy… You haven’t seen the last of this Z technology. Matt 13 Fishing
@@TackleAdvisors thanks! Explains why the pricing of these reels are DROPPING fast! I bought the Z at $170 (CAD) and just noticed that my local basspro/cabelas have reduced the price by 40% . I really wanted to love this reel, however I had two major issues that I clearly documented with videos. Sent them to 13 fishing last week and I have yet to receive a response... (very loud knocking sound on retrieve and the handle had a lot of play). I just ended up returning the reel. Now... I need to find a replacement... thinking about the Curado K...
man i just got mine and its making some crazy sounds when casting for the money im pissed the curado k is much much better. did you sends your back to be fixed
My reel doesn’t have these problems at all it’s nice and tight when reeling in doesn’t sound sloppy and very very smooth I’m sorry to see yours is like this
I bought one for $100 4-5 years ago. Still works and cast well enough for me. Bought it to use in the saltwater and it has exclusively been used for that. Don't have to worry about it getting wet in the kayak and is really lightweight for shore fishing. The finish sucks and it chipped and scratched easily. Does it match my tranx 200 , coastal SV, or lexas? No . End of the day I'm pleased with it and will use it till it breaks. Which might be sooner than later. Last night the clutch didn't want to engage sometimes with the handle. Same thing happened to my daiwa aird coastal 100 after 5 years of saltwater use. Wish they still made that reel or parts for it.
I got one in the mail today. I fished with it and it 100% was not making those noises. I don't care for how light it feels, and it doesn't feel as substantial when reeling lures in.
Meh....I'm a guide frame guy. Or a fan of good hook keepers. They're not bad. but I find that I get line hung up on it occassionally....enough that I say damn...I wish it had a hook keeper like on so and so rod.
Watch this..I time stamped it.....this is a 40$ reel consisting of parts from other cheap eom reels. Big difference. th-cam.com/video/ruVmntvgxjA/w-d-xo.htmlm18s
I actually just tried cranking that hard with a Curado K, Daiwa Tatula Type R and Lew's Pro G and all of them sounded exactly like the Z when cranked with the intensity shown in this video.......
Using plastic bushings as a raceway for a metal part lol. 13 Fishing is the Apple of the fishing tackle world. That noise is the spool shaft jumping around in there because the tolerance is so loose. If they tightened up the tolerance the noise would be less but the bushing would wear down faster from contact and heat.
I admit I was buying the hype, especially after watching some sponsored reviews, so I'm thankful for unbiased reviews, such as yours and The Reel Test. You saved me from some serious G.A.S. and wasting $200.
He's blocked me from his channel. He can't take constructive criticism. I know 100% for a fact he's deleted at least 5 other comments from others as well. I even told him take it as an opportunity instead of deleting them. I also have been sent email chains from people who corresponded with him asking for help and advise.....And from what I've read, he seems a bit rude. He said he can over power magnetic brakes. And deleted a friendly back and forth debate which included other people. I asked him how that's possible when I can throw 4 ounces over 600 feet and not overpower a mag brake. And he can do it on a little bass rod. I followed that up with a wikipedia link to Lenz's theory . It's tough to tell if he's a good caster or not. He casts with a short snappy stroke which only loads the tip. And is very inefficient. I also don't feel his method of measuring is accurate. Rolling a wheel on lumpy grass won't be accurate. Additionally casting without aiming for a target means you can mis time your cast. And still take a measurement. So that will throw off everything as well. 90% of the reels will throw within 10% of one another. It all has to do with how low in the braking you can go. And the lubrication (oils are hydraulic brakes. You can use oil to slow down a reel more than you can speed them up. ) I put in a ton of on the grass casting comparing a bunch of reels. I never bothered continuing doing it because i felt it wasn't very important. I did this one because it's a bushing reel with tons of Manufacturer hype...and wanted to see how she did.... So in a nut shell. I think he puts out content that may be valuable to some. But not me.
LOL...WINNING!!! lmao...this is what he recently deleted. He deleted everyone's comments. And many of my previous ones. Tackle Advisors Tackle Advisors 3 weeks ago Overpowered the magnetic brakes???? LMAO....How come that doesn't happen when I throw 600 to 700 feet? And when tournament casters throw 700 - 800 feet? The magnetic brake theory is sound and is applied in industry. Not trying to be "doooshy" as we're all on the same team trying to educate and inform. But that is incorrect. I used the mag brakes in long distance casting of over 200 yards only as an example in my above comment of how with rpms and forces are much higher than with a 7' bass rods and a half ounce lure. It still won't "over power" the magnetic brake For crazy long distance field work. You actually adjust the mag dial while the payload is in flight. Which is why knobby mag side plates are preferred over a slider design. 3 other things that throws off casts causing mid flight blow ups (which lots of guys attribute to dig ins usually because it happens at high speed and causes a dig in).... You can have your mag dial set perfectly and not backlash all day but if you try to reach a spot say 10 ft. further and put more energy/speed into the cast I find it can overpower that "perfect" setting you had much easier than centrifugal brakes that provide more force/friction in proportion to the spool speed. While the magnetic field pretty much stays constant no matter the spool speed. I had been interested in this reel so I have been watching everything I can and came across his video review. That guy is an a**hole. After reading his replies to people commenting on his video his true colors came out. What an immature jerk.
Question: Wouldn't the Palomar bushings over time wear down? Still not convinced that the "Zero" bearing system is even worth it. I'll stick to my Shimano's.
If you look at the nylon bushings in your shimano reels at the levelwind. Or nylon gears.....or the polymer worm gear and pawls.....or the yoke that the pinion runs on..it's all plastic. SO this material has potential to wear very well.
The worm gear? My older shimanos (Back when they were made in Japan) from around 2008, all have metal worm gears, including my Aldebaran MG7. My Casitas however has a plastic worm gear.
I noticed that as well. Even though it is made in Malaysia, it feels even better then my Curado 200e and Scorpion 1500XT. Must be so since they used the Micro Module gearing in the new one
Thanks man! And yeah i have......trying to figure out what way I want to go with how i present it......Internally it has the worst tolerances that I've ever seen on a baitcaster...I even compared it to a 1979 shimano bantam 1 and a ancient penn jigmaster....both of which have tighterr tolerrances and less slop.....then i swapped abunch of bearings from a quantum accurist and tightened it up and it's a decent reel now..lol...so that's the short of it...i also found why it was so chattery on the cast...and rickety on the retireve.....which was cool...i guess...SO that's the short of it! lol
But I gotta finish up with a new sustain, ci4+ stradic, ultegra,Saltist , KK speed demon, and a few others soi can get them back to their owners......the struggle is real....or is it reel?
I wonder if the cold weather makes the bushings contract and thats where the play is coming in making the tolerances change? Really makes no difference unless you fish Florida all the time
I had it apart at room temp. The tolerances on all the bushings were the same. There is a good amount of wiggle room. But I don't know if it gets worse in the 40 degree temps. Good call!
Honestly it shouldn't change much being a "space age polymer" bushing. You'd see more temperature shrink in a metal ball bearing and metal components than plastics and polymers in the cold. Plastics don't conduct heat as well meaning they don't cool to ambient temperatures like metal objects do..... Just my knowledge of science and my two cents so take it for what its worth. 😂
Purchased 2 of these reels in 2018 because i was looking for alternatives to bearing since they are used for saltwater wade fishing. One of the reels does exactly what is described in Tackle Advisors report. The other one doesn’t.... after using them for approx one year i would not recommend. Casting distance is ok but I’m getting more distance with much better performance from my LEWs inshore SSN1SH reels. LEWs internals have some weakness with the main gear which i found small fractures in. Planning to trash the one that has issues and sell the other As is...
All these people saying that you and lots of other people are getting dud reels trying to justify it blows my mind. I know all reel companies have duds but its sounding like 13 has a lot of them. Especially when you pay $200 for a reel. I would send it back until I got a good one. Sucks to have to do that when you just spent $200 on a reel! Definitely lots of hype.
Lol.. The way you reel that thing is what's causing that noise.. I've had mine for a few weeks now, it's been completely silent. Not sure if you got a lemon, but that one you have definitely isn't like the one I got... If I was you I'd take that thing back and exchange it.. But at the same time, if I were to reel as aggressive as you then I'd be worn out after the first 30 mins! Lol
Sorry. You can think that. But you'd be incorrect. I can make any reel chatter like that....By reeling like a chimpanzee. But it happens even if I don't. I just had it apart. And compared the bushing tolerances to bearing tolerances of a 1979 shimano bantam 100, A 30 year old Penn Jig Master, a 40$ kastking, a quantum accurist etc. I then grabbed a Steez SV TWS, ANtares, Aldebaran and Abugarcia MGX...and made them clack by reeling like said chimp... Every single one of the CZB bushings throughout the entire reel have gaps between the surfaces they support that are not there at all whatsoever in any of the other reels. I replaced the CZB bushing with ball bearings and it no longer is as rickety and the handle lean is now gone. As far as casting distance claims made by the 13 fishing sponsored individuals....A 40$ reel cast further.
Griselda Torres i have a sx gen 4 and im not impressed. I dont know if mine if defective but im having them check it out bc the cast is way louder than my friends casitas and reeling is not smooth
Oh yeah. My only issue with the Tranx (400) was the power handle tripping on the cast if it's in certain positions, cured by a Hawg handle. It's a beast, bomb a long cast and you still have a bunch of line with not much line pickup loss, fast as hell.
I have a concept z, curado dc, scorpion dc, metanium dc, and chronarch mgl. My concept works perfect and is just as smooth as micro module and it’s my quietest real other than the chronarch mgl.
Hey Gus, Thanks man! I just discovered I can add defaults to video descriptions So that's what that is :) . And will be adding that going forward. There's a ton of other items that I really enjoy using. I just haven't gotten around to dealing with amazon's somewhat clunky "amazon influencer page"
Terrific. Any chance you’ll be at Striper Day Saturday? Would love to say hello and pick your brain about a couple of surf rods I’m seriously considering to fish the Canal this year. Specifically, the 10’ 6” Black Hole, FSC, and TFO.
I'm not going to be able to make it. Which sucks because I like saying hi to Kil Song. If there's ever been a tackle shill that I support...it's him. He actually gave me permission to use all his videos.....I just never got around to grabbing them. He's a gent! I had a minor problem with my 9'6 cape cod nano not being straight (still fishable) and he offered me my choice of replacement..so I went with the 9'2 and he let me keep my 9'6. He's been a StriperOnline member for a long time too!
Tackle Advisors just picked up a rod from Kil. Nice guy. Great rod. Think his family is running the operation here at the show. Nice to see small businesses flourishing. Thanks for the tip. Couldn’t find FSC which was strange/disappointing wanted to compare them side by side. Nevertheless, still happy to give Kil a few bucks...
His wife June and daughter usually "man" the booths :) A few years ago at the nj saltwater show. He was handing people black hole cape cod cow specials and showing the pulling power. He yanked down on the rod tip...and the rod exploded after about 40lbs of pressure.....The hilarious part is the guy on went flying backwards through the booth separating cloth....Nobody was hurt. But it was funny as crap!! I first met him in 2010 at a canyon runner seminar where he did a break out tuna jiggin seminar..he let me take his zeebass apart while at the seminar....Gears smeared flat...blew my mind!
Adding spool tension will help rid of the knock of the spool and some of the slap between the spool shaft pin and pinion gear....But spool tension kills distance....and changes when you release your thumb off the spool casting lighter lures....If every one of my reels had no spool tensioner...and allowed for a slight bit of lateral play...I'd be perfectly happy :) I swapped the CZB bearings out for ball bearings earlier and the handle lean disappeared entirely. All it took was replacing one CZB at the base of the handle shaft exactly as I suspected....And the reel feels better than it did out of the box. I filmed 10x magnified up close footage showing how much slop there is between all the czb's and the part they support. The only way you could say this reel feels as refined as something from shimano or daiwa is if you fell asleep on your arm funny and started fishing while your arm was still numb....Like or hate shim/daiwa....they are in a different realm in terms of fit finish and feel. Sure there are duds...but overall...I don't think this reel is as special as the hype train conductors led people to believe
You’re critique of 13 fishing is spot on. I have 3 inceptions. They are the same way, loose. I also have a curado i and k models. I know they cost $50 more but they are much tighter and refined reels. They never chatter on retrieve. My inceptions do. Also the paint on my inceptions handles start to chip under the nuts. The only thing on my shimano is the brakes in the i need to be cleaned and lubed twice a year. But I fish a lot so that’s kind of expected. Not to mention my curado out cast the inceptions even with boca ceramics. Good reviews. Piss the haters.
I would love to see the concept z with boca ABEC 7 bearings in the reel and get rid of the polymer disc and see if it would cast further it would be a interesting test ?
I'm so glad you did a review of this reel, and suspected exactly the response you had with it. When it first came out I was dead set on getting a couple but my gut told me to stay with the tried and true legends of the market like Diawa or shimano. I didn't believe for a second it could sit at the same price point QUALITY LIKE THE DIAWA tatula or the shimano curado/chronarch !, and if any of you call me a fanboy of Shimano or Diawa I would say why wouldn't I be? I have invested a lot of cheddar in my reels and can say with an honest heart. I got exactly what I hoped I would at the prices I paid.
Keep in mind this wasn't a review. This was just seeing if the shills and advertising lived up to the longest casting smoothest reel on ever garbage. Which it isn't m. But it is indestructible. Best low pro I've used if it's gonna get salty and sloppy
I would show them your issues and send them the reel back for repair or have them send you a new one (After all you just spent $200 on a new reel). Yes I know he's sponsored by them but, Flukemaster's Concept Z sounds flawless
would you mind sharing a link? The video review I watched...there's only music and no sounds of the reel....And for him to claim a 30 foot win for the Z.....that is without a doubt subjective and purposefully achieved. Sorry....but if i can take a 40$ reel and out cast it at over 250 feet....and he's throwing maybe 130 to 150....an extra 30 feet can be achieved by turning the brake on the lews and other reel up just 2 or 3 clicks...and you wouldn't be the wiser. You could also add a drop of oil to the spool bearings and slow them down massively (oil acts as a brake if too much is added)
Thanks. Yeah that is the one I thought you two were referring to. There is no sound at least not of the reel or anything i could hear over the music. Unless I missed it...
Thanks for the reviews, it definitely cooled my jet on running out and ordering one till thing get straight or I find out if this is they way they all are.
yeah my tatulas or fuegos dont make these noises stock. I like their fate black and higher rods though... had mine for a long while and caught lots of fish on them.
I’m on my third concept Z I’m having too much faith in it .. first two reels started to sound super ugly on casting and got worse .. we will see how the third one goes won’t be getting another one if it happens again
Wow I almost get on the hype train watching those other TH-camrs, luckily I saw this video and make me have second thoughts about this reel. Thank for the honest review!
Thanks for sharing your findings! I’ve got an A3 and didn’t really like it all that much too. Funny you should mention Okuma because a bunch of OEM reels comes from the same factory that churns out Okuma.
Thank you for the video. I was just about to purchase this reel today but wanted to get an honest opinion on the Z before making the purchase. I have read and seen a lot of "marketing" videos. I fell into the "I must have that reel" feeling. I really don't need another reel, I just want the newest evolution in reels, I guess........ I think I will hold off until 13 Fishing refine the reel a bit more and stick with my Lews for now. A lot of other similar comments at Tackle Warehouse convinced me that the "chatter" could be annoying and lets face it, you have to LOVE your reel in order enjoy your day on the water.
Ok, I agree with you 100% on the hype surrounding this reel. Surprised it was so loud on the cast but the retrieve really floored me. I normally fish Shimano and Daiwa and all of my reels sound better than this one. Hell, I even have 20 year old Calcutta's that sound better. I picked up and played with $99 Shimano Casitas and it sounded better! It should sound better and have better tolerances for $200. Will stick with Shimano and Daiwa. I followed your replies on the reel test and felt you were giving some good feedback on his testing and your honest opinion. Surprised he cut you off. Your jab at him with this video had me laughing pretty good.. Anyway, really like the straight forward opinions on all of the reels you tear down and discuss. Keep it up and your scooby through rig caught me some smallmouth and spots over the summer! Thanks Man!
Very disappointing. I expected to hear silence on the cast and instead it sounded like a reel with noisy ball bearings. If it does have backward and forward movement of the spool it will bind under a load. Was the worm and pawl dry?
Love mine, and mine doesn't do that. Have 3 and a few Curados but I got mine for $129 at dicks and work great. Of course the Curado is better but like the reel for the price.
For the 99$ it was selling for over the past 6months.. It's a great reel... I had a z3 defect that had a spool that wouldn't turn right... Dtemeled it to no avail... The replacement was great until the side plate bushing popped out on a brake change.. 2miles away from the truck on the beach... Qc at 13 is a big issue
Since I’m a dumbass with a mill and a lathe. I’m thinking about getting some oil impregnate bronze and making some loose ass bushings for my Curado K. To seeing if I can get to cast 100 yards.
Personally I've never had a okuma reel make a sound like that, i have had a little bit of a muck around with the Cirtix and it was so smoothhhhh unlike the reel in this vid
Review? where? It was an hour on a casting field. And a discussion. Hence the title. I was trying to see if 13's claims of 20% distance gains are true....And they aren't even close.
I'm still on the fence about returning mine and getting the tatula sv for the same price. The reel was delivered to my house when it was less than 20 degrees and upon getting it out of the package it sounded awful. Line guide noise, spool play, handle play, and just about everything you mentioned except without casting. After it warmed up inside the noises weren't as intense but still worse than some of my quantum , daiwas and Abu reels. The reel does palm nicely though and the grips are comfortable but that's about all good I can say at this point. There is still part of me that wants to give it a chance.
Not really whipping it. It''s sort of what I'd call a mod fast. The taper of the blank is a bit more gradual. It's rated to an ounce and a half. Tip loads fairly easily. Loading the butt section takes an efficient casting stroke.
Agree, props to you for being able to do it with such ease. I can coax more flex out of the body of the rod when casting with a more "winding" motion (kinda like you do in this vid), but then my release point and thus trajectory will lose quite a bit of consistency. I like how you have the reel sideways on the backcast and then rotate along the axis of the rod while going through the casting motion, makes for a really smooth-looking kinetic chain. Most people would have the reel still in the sideways orientation by the end of the cast, but you actually have the reel facing up, which in my experience is a more efficient way to finish the stroke.
What's interesting. I picked up the z3. The tolerances between all things running on czb is much better. And no handle rock (they use a brass bushing for handle support which was a suggestion I made awhile back. (but the first reel was doa.. Could barely turn the handle) second one is great
I picked up 7 of these reels for $159 a peice at tackle warehouse I figured I give them a try I have a few concepts As and and A3s and concept Es and Cs and inceptions that I upgraded them all to the Boca Bearings It turned my concepts all into totally different reels all together I wasn’t expecting the concept z to cast like a Shimano alderbaran or Antares or mentanium MGL or even the Daiwa steez line I appreciate your honesty And taking the time and making this video because I’m sending all seven back to tackle warehouse I was going to take one out and Cast one on one of my new fenwick world class casting rods but why bother you done the work for me To me there not even worth $159 price point for what I paid for them with my 20% discount thanks again you save me a ton of money I’ll stick with my lews Shimano and daiwa Some of my team daiwa reels are 30 years old and never let me down Thanks again Matt
Damn!!! That's alot of orange!!!! Sorry my vid put you in a bind. I received a few emails and fb messages saying they experience the same thing. So Im not really sure it's just my example that's bad
Well they will get them back to tackle warehouse I spent tens of thousands of dollars a year and fishing equipment when I comes to my reels and rods I buy the best I can get Like I said in my prior post I drank the Kool-Aid not that I was burnt buy the way they cast It’s just a lot of hype went into this reel by the sponsors and of course the professional bass fisherman that endorse them we’re not gonna bite the hand that feeds them It’s just plain business 101
Tackle Advisors you were completely honest in your opinion and I happen to agree with you maybe Matt Baldwin from 13 fishing Could shed some light on this topic or he’s going to have a lot of pissed off customers Being that this was his baby and all he designed it
I purchased one based on all the hype...and that I got 20% off and a $20 rewards card coupon from Dick's sporting goods...my reel is silent no issues...no vibrations, no no clacking and screeching...i dont see any increase in casting distance at all...but it does a very good job against backlashes ...i like the color. I only paid $140 with free shipping so im pleased overall with it...but will i buy another for $200? Nope ...but would for lets say $125. ...otherwise i'd buy a 2nd hand used shimano Antares reel on ebay from a Japanese seller for $100-$125 and get a much better reel for the money (I purchased 4 Antares this way and love them)
I was going to pick one up because I am a sucker for that color, however, after a lot of research, its basically using a sleeve bearing instead of ball bearings. I'm not an engineer, but have dealt with fans and sleeve bearings are usually the solution for lower costs. Why? Its a not precision part when compared to ball bearings. Without going on and on, just google the differences between sleeve and ball bearings, you'll never want a sleeve bearing in a reel. If the reel was < 50.00, that's fine, 200.00? Look at a Concept A or a ONE3 if you want a 13 reel.
Mine makes the same clanking noise, but casts/reels fine. I bought it because I fish a lot of salt water. I think the payoff will be how it handles the salt in the long run.
Thanks man! That's fuggin funny!!!! Great for hunters! amzn.to/2D9mh77 is the specific rod. Not a fast action rod but not a slow action rod. Sort of unique
i have this real and i love it. mine make the retrieve noise but not the casting one and i have 22 freinds that have this real and theres dont make either noises. Im taking miine back to get a new one
If one of your subs is a machinist. You should see if you can get someone to make you some brass journal bearings and I bet that they would work better then those bearings. Lightly oiled of course. Actually I think they have graphite infused brass or all graphite for that matter.
Yes but they incorporate some parts that i've not seen used elsewhere. Levelwind and sideplate. Some of their reels look like okumas on the inside....so if there was an oem rabbit hole i'd go down...i'd start there
That chatter sound is when the spool shaft starts to hammer around inside of the loose CZBushing. First of the cast the momentum and balance keeps it "floating" almost, then as it slows the spool shaft is hammering around in there bouncing around.
+Daniel Dean that is 100% exactly my thought
Yeah that's hilarious.
I really wanted to like this reel. Disappointed in 13 really. Thanks for the honest unbiased review.
Made by Fisher price ?
Nah...Sunkinst!
Unless my post on tackle tour failed to post....They removed my casting comparison results from today throwing other lures.
lol that doesn't surprise me one bit
Mine doesn’t sound like that even when I reel as fast as I can. Not sure what’s up with yours.
Tell me about it I freakin love mine! 👍
Dude has a ton of d*** riders I have a sport z and z neither do any of that lol but I don't throw 30 pound braid on a 100 foot rod either lmao .
I thoroughly enjoy the candidness of your first impressions.
Can you try the concept tx? I also wanna see if it can cast far .
Theres always one
You just saved me $200 and the hassle of re selling it on eBay.
I'll take a zillion or curado any day over this.
This is a Zero in my tackle box , after hearing this real sound like that,,,
Out of all the videos I’ve watched about this reel, you are the first person to say anything about that noise. Wish I saw this before I bought it but I can say I bought mine for 89 bucks. For 89 bucks fishes fine but if I paid 200 I would be disappointed.
Would like to see a tear down vid, want to know if it's czb for all bearings or just those having to do with the spool
For me, I live 8 hours from the ocean and it's warm pretty much all year so I'll take a curado 70 or 200 all day
What are your thoughts on the z3? Same?
Nah.. Completely different reel. Much better in the refinement category. Much more solid. I'm digging it so far for sure
What's lb test line is recommended for baitcasters? I've been using 15lb braid and I'm only getting around 13 yards of casting distance
If that's all you're getting you may have an issue I had with the larger z3. Where no matter what I did which included Dremel ing the side plate. There was no freespool (defective.. Like the spool tensioner was 10x too tight) I use 15 to 40 on that reel and get average to very good distance)
Thats cool that you found what the issue was. Pretty cool reel
Probably the most indestructible reel in the low profile game today.
i am so thankful that you are testing and trying stuff out for us man! i just got myself a shimano metanium mgl wohoo!
Thanks man. and ye i guess its hard to find people/reviewers that arent bought or getting paid. Keep up the good work!
thank you for doing this vid. I am a 13 fishing fan for their rods, but not really with their reel. what if this reel was around 120 Dollars?
+raWr Fishing for 120 based one weight and size it'd be competitive. But every other reel at that price is more solid and refined in hand and on retrieve.. At least the ones I've used. I just tore it down and compared it to a quantum accurist.... Stole a bearing from it too and put it in place of a czb at the base of the handle shaft and it now feels better than new.. Lmao
oh man.. well i guess the only reason i want it is that it's my favorite color lol... since i am dirt broke, kastking it is haha :P
Do you still like it .. I'm debating getting one
@@skinnysfishin7066 - I had no problems with it, but I did end up selling it because I bought too many reels and had to get rid of some. I do prefer a Shimano or Daiwa.
Would you buy it for 120 bucks because it's on sale on Amazon I either get one of them or a shimano slx
And does it make a sound like the video said
@@skinnysfishin7066 - No, not for $120, I paid $70 for mine brand new from Dicks Sporting Goods, they are on sale for $100 all the time.
Where can I find more information on this reel being discontinued? Any reason why? You’re the second person to mention it and I can’t find anything online. I may return my Z because of it.
I emailed Matt Baldwin at 13 fishing when the prices dropped. Here's his reply
Nick,
The current Z model has sold out and we have dropped pricing protection on the product to prepare for new introductions at ICAST 2020. Retailers are free to sell at whatever pricing they desire. When this happens some get a bit crazy…
You haven’t seen the last of this Z technology.
Matt

Tackle Advisors can you do review of the concept tx ? been trying to find a good review of it but haven't found any thanks!
My reel doesn’t have these problems at all it’s nice and tight when reeling in doesn’t sound sloppy and very very smooth I’m sorry to see yours is like this
What reel would you thinks is best
Should I even consider buying one of these reels or should I just hold my money for a Shimano scorpion 17 dc
Good video nick, that has to be the ugliest reel ever and it sounds like a piece of crap. There is no way I would pay 200$ for that thing.
Thank you for helping us save money!
You are a Saint! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Joe!!
Also did you catch any grass carp? You were in some juicy areas
I got some grass crap stuck in my boots.....damn geese all over the friggin place lol
I figured out the sound it makes....Is this reel equipped with a Jake Brake? LOL
lol
if you see this. what reel do you recommend $150-$200 range.
Thousands of 15 year olds who joined the 13 hype train will be disappointed to say the least
Its been amazing for inshore fishing. Better than any daiwas for longevity
Been fishing for 30 years and just got my SZ six months ago and now I’m on the train too.
dabeerguy79 Weird... I’ve been fishing for 31 years
Thanks you saved me a ton of money and your roasts in this vid were hilarious.
I got one in the mail today. I fished with it and it 100% was not making those noises. I don't care for how light it feels, and it doesn't feel as substantial when reeling lures in.
Both of mine do not make that sound with the spool and their really quiet and smooth maybe u got a bad one of the Batch
+Brent Jones so you're saying yours is silent on the cast? Every youtube video out you can at least hear the buzzy Ness of the brakes.
Concept c is good but after 8 months of using it my line viide is having play. Any suggestions? Also im not buying anymore 13 foshing products
The levelwind guide? wiggles on ya? They generally do have some sort of play. It's not a piece that is rigid when mounted...some slop is expected
Tried a Inception and returned it for a curado, the Inception spool release wouldn’t automatically close
Totally off topic but are those EZ keepers worth the 3 bucks?
yes!
Meh....I'm a guide frame guy. Or a fan of good hook keepers. They're not bad. but I find that I get line hung up on it occassionally....enough that I say damn...I wish it had a hook keeper like on so and so rod.
"I'm a guide frame guy" smh...for shame!
Bro....do you even fish..lmao
If you crank almost any reel as hard as you did in this vid it will make that noise
Watch this..I time stamped it.....this is a 40$ reel consisting of parts from other cheap eom reels. Big difference.
th-cam.com/video/ruVmntvgxjA/w-d-xo.htmlm18s
Ahh yeh nah, they dont make that noise 😂
I actually just tried cranking that hard with a Curado K, Daiwa Tatula Type R and Lew's Pro G and all of them sounded exactly like the Z when cranked with the intensity shown in this video.......
My 36$ kastking royal legend doesn't make the knocking sound lolol
Biggie Smalljaws Both of my reels don't make that noise. I understand if the reel is dirty and not oiled then maybe..
would you recommend this reel for musky fishing?
No too small, go with a Shimano
I have that same rattleing sound in my Curado K but it's just a little bit. Anyone know why?
Love your honest reviews. Would also love to see you open up the concept z and tinker around the insides
Whats your thoughts on the reel test
But not me.
Tackle Advisors i agree with everything
Tackle Advisors i like your channel better i just wanted to see your opinion on him
LOL...WINNING!!! lmao...this is what he recently deleted. He deleted everyone's comments. And many of my previous ones.

Overpowered the magnetic brakes???? LMAO....How come that doesn't happen when I throw 600 to 700 feet? And when tournament casters throw 700 - 800 feet?
The magnetic brake theory is sound and is applied in industry.
Magnetic braking at lighter settings still function the same...it just may not "play nice" with how line is coming off the spool.

I can lob 500 on a measured field flat footed with zero effort at all..400 with a 9 foot rod built for both spinning and conventional (using top water plugs)
With my old heaver and tuned qtc framed knobby magged abu. And a pendulum I've hit 690' on a measured field (and not using a measuring wheel which is not very accurate over grass)
I have some vids on casting performance comparisons...But stopped doing them because there are way too many un controllable variables.

Tackle Advisors what are you casting with 1oz weights? I've never measured a cast but I'd guess it's something like 200-300ft with an average bass lure and a baitcaster on med-hvy rod. Your talking about over 2football feilds and i just don't see it on a regular bait casting set up. Maybe on a 12ft surf rod with a big chunk of bait on it

2-5 ounces...Most bass baits go 130-180. Some over 200...not many get close to 300' Megabass 110s go about 140-160 as an example.
Daiwa sp minnows 200 -250...give or take

I never said mag brakes dont work, but if you have your brakes set then decide to put more umph into the next cast you can definitely blow the spool up. Yep even on Daiwas :)

Tackle Advisors that’s funny because I was going to ask you somehow if that’s the reason why I prefer centrifugal over mag brakes?? Not a fan of magnet brakes but maybe it’s because all I’ve used is centrifugal shimano bantam citica 200

Unless I misunderstood, you made a comparison to centrifugal physical friction brakes to mags. "ok now there's a characteristic of mags that i don't like.....if your setting is too low and put more effort.........blow up......centrifugal is proportional......with a static mag......you can over power the magnetic field...."
It still won't "over power" the magnetic brake
For crazy long distance field work. You actually adjust the mag dial while the payload is in flight. Which is why knobby mag side plates are preferred over a slider design.
3 other things that throws off casts causing mid flight blow ups (which lots of guys attribute to dig ins usually because it happens at high speed and causes a dig in)....
Secondary period of acceleration shortly after the apex
Weight transfer systems shifting at different points of flight
Fish gods

Im going by my experience with regular bass lures, not heavy, dense, lead weights that cut through the air easily. Ive experienced this with my old OG Zillion, T3, Abu Mag Trax, etc. I run into this all the time when im out on the testing field. This is probably what people experience when they say that magnetic brakes are touchy.

So you feel it's the brake...vs over loading the rod, and changing in timing of the cast (plus what i mentioned before)?
""While the magnetic field pretty much stays constant no matter the spool speed""
I politely suggest reading this. It'll take about a minute to get to the point that I made earlier.

Tackle Advisors are you saying that despite the "eddy currents" you cant overpower that magnetic field by sheer force of a higher spike in spool RPMs? My experience tells me otherwise. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this matter.

Hey Vin! Often from what i've seen with many centrifugal brakes..they come in very hot. And apply a ton of braking early. (i've taken wd 40 straws cut em down to make smaller brake weights on some reels old trick)
The lastest SVS infinity, and IVCB4 / 6 seems to not come in as harshly in comparision the older shimano abu standard centrifugal brake designs.
Did you ever see the vid i did with the revo toro beast...comparing centrifugal only to mag only settings? You can hear the difference at the mid way point in the cast.
Either way it's all preference..And how over the years you've tuned your thumb to expect certain things at certain times. And at the end of the day....for smallish reels using short rods.....distances are kinda capped anyway....which is why so many of todays bass reels cast so similarly. :)

If it was possible........ya ain't breaking Lenz's Law with a bass reel and a 7' fershin pole...with a lure only going 50 mph
And depending where the "overpowering happens" it's after braking was already applied. So even at the point where the lure accelerates a second time after the apex..it's less than the speed off the rod tip

We've all been there man..And yeah....those are dig ins. PUlling out snags and such....I remember when Keepin it reel fishing did a j braid review..and said he got more dig ins with it.....I was scratching my head...Guys on the forums even go the extra mile to say no snags and no hooksets...yet they get dig ins. And attribute it to the braid or the brake
Look at it like this.....how often do you get dig ins on spinning reels.
A shimano stradic uses a worm gear just like a baitcaster levelwind.
Only dig in's you get are if it's not spooled tight enough or hoookset/ snag :)
I don't think he has an issue with it? I encourage this sort of stuff on my page. And StripersOnline.com

I prefer mag braking profile overall for fw reels. As I find them to be the most consistent uniform and most are infinitely adjustable from 0 to max 100% externally. And don't require any maintenance. Are completely silent, and work well with any weight. I do like some centrifugal brakes...IVCB4/6 and the lastest svs infiniti are great. And the old school centrifugal brake on the new tranx for some reason agrees with me when set to one.

lmao.....Yeah I saw that! Scumbags! Though I didn't see the exact charges and sentences!
+William Bannister crazy isn't it... The new curado has a plastic worm
I noticed that as well. Even though it is made in Malaysia, it feels even better then my Curado 200e and Scorpion 1500XT. Must be so since they used the Micro Module gearing in the new one
Great review. The reel is very noisy casting as well. I’ll stick to my curado k.
Weird, i was gifted a Concept A2 and none of this odd play occurs in my reel....also not casting 100 yards lol...
Have you done a teardown of the Concept Z yet? Was curious what's inside. Greats vids!
What rod were u using
Sorry i missed this one. 8' steez ags. It's a moderate action rod. that throws from 1/8 to 1.5 ounces
Sweet have you tried out the abu Garcia revo inshore gen4
Griselda Torres i have a sx gen 4 and im not impressed. I dont know if mine if defective but im having them check it out bc the cast is way louder than my friends casitas and reeling is not smooth
Griselda Torres get a tranx
I really like the amazon link in the description that has all the stuff you like and use. Can you keep adding it to your videos going forward? Thx!
When you tighten the spool tension knob, the slop goes away. Realized, it takes a few turns before it starts actually applying pressure.
Adding spool tension will help rid of the knock of the spool and some of the slap between the spool shaft pin and pinion gear....But spool tension kills distance....and changes when you release your thumb off the spool casting lighter lures....If every one of my reels had no spool tensioner...and allowed for a slight bit of lateral play...I'd be perfectly happy :)
I swapped the CZB bearings out for ball bearings earlier and the handle lean disappeared entirely.
That's all ready to go. Bearings have been swapped....it's as I expected.
Fenza Fenza uhh
rtfabian sorry I don’t know what you mean
Brian Robinson I literally just watched Flukes vid and had the same thought.
would you mind sharing a link? The video review I watched...there's only music and no sounds of the reel....And for him to claim a 30 foot win for the Z.....that is without a doubt subjective and purposefully achieved. Sorry....but if i can take a 40$ reel and out cast it at over 250 feet....and he's throwing maybe 130 to 150....an extra 30 feet can be achieved by turning the brake on the lews and other reel up just 2 or 3 clicks...and you wouldn't be the wiser.
You could also add a drop of oil to the spool bearings and slow them down massively (oil acts as a brake if too much is added)
Whattup Biggie, see the reply to Brian...And if you don't mind sharing a link i'd appreciate it.
th-cam.com/video/HA5zmQ9_-J0/w-d-xo.html
Can you review some lews reels possibly the 100 dollar one
Mine does throw very far, it has a click sometimes when I reel in though.
Sweet video awesome review good job
Thank you for the info. I agree.
Thanks Man!
Please do a table top tear down of the concept z and tatula sv
Very disappointing. I expected to hear silence on the cast and instead it sounded like a reel with noisy ball bearings. If it does have backward and forward movement of the spool it will bind under a load. Was the worm and pawl dry?
I knew this reel wasn't going to live up to the hype lmao! Thanks so much for putting the hype down
Love mine, and mine doesn't do that.
@@TackleAdvisors had mine over almost 2 years now no issues. Multiple 6-8 lbers on it. Run 30 lb braid.
Since I’m a dumbass with a mill and a lathe. I’m thinking about getting some oil impregnate bronze and making some loose ass bushings for my Curado K. To seeing if I can get to cast 100 yards.
Lmao while you at it make some for the drag car and you'll go faster lol with more control
Personally I've never had a okuma reel make a sound like that, i have had a little bit of a muck around with the Cirtix and it was so smoothhhhh unlike the reel in this vid
I have one and it does not make any noise.. Very one sided review. The Orange is awesome .
Review?
There is still part of me that wants to give it a chance.
nice casting form! great vid as always
Thanks man! Appreciate it! I posted on my instagram a frame grab of how much that rod was loaded....
Wow either you put a ton of whip in the cast, or that's a really deep-loading rod! What's the action rating on it?
Mine has not did the wiggling and no problems
What's interesting. I picked up the z3. The tolerances between all things running on czb is much better. And no handle rock (they use a brass bushing for handle support which was a suggestion I made awhile back. (but the first reel was doa.. Could barely turn the handle) second one is great
I forget to run the line through my level wind at LEAST once a week.
Is it worth $110. They are on sale.
100 percent yes. Great reel for that price
Tackle Advisors you were completely honest in your opinion and I happen to agree with you maybe Matt Baldwin from 13 fishing Could shed some light on this topic or he’s going to have a lot of pissed off customers Being that this was his baby and all
he designed it
I purchased one based on all the hype...and that I got 20% off and a $20 rewards card coupon from Dick's sporting goods...my reel is silent no issues...no vibrations, no no clacking and screeching...i dont see any increase in casting distance at all...but it does a very good job against backlashes ...i like the color.
You just save me a lot of money thanks 👍
Mine makes the same clanking noise, but casts/reels fine. I bought it because I fish a lot of salt water. I think the payoff will be how it handles the salt in the long run.
specs on the rod pls. great review these reels are like safety vest you can really spot the suckas
Im taking miine back to get a new one
nice video man. We all have our own opinons me and my freinds all love it thats our opions.
If one of your subs is a machinist. You should see if you can get someone to make you some brass journal bearings and I bet that they would work better then those bearings. Lightly oiled of course. Actually I think they have graphite infused brass or all graphite for that matter.
Also is 13 fishing an OEM culprit?
Yes but they incorporate some parts that i've not seen used elsewhere. Levelwind and sideplate. Some of their reels look like okumas on the inside....so if there was an oem rabbit hole i'd go down...i'd start there
Guess we can only trust daiwa and lews these days (and the higher end abus)
Oops forgot shimano on that list
So the bearing or nonbearing is to small
