    I have heard a lot of good things about the Bantam MGL from my friends even to the point of recommending me to buy one, mainly on the premium feel in your hand because of the aluminum frame. I haven't done so yet, for one I do have a problem with the noisy cast issue, partly due to the short distance from the spool to the levelwind, but probably more to do with how small the hole of the line guide is. This happens in pretty much most Shimano low profiles especially when you are using a wiry line such as Daiwa J-Braid x4 which I have on my Curado K and I just don't like it. The problem is probably exaggerated when you fish Daiwas with the T-Wing. I find that you get spoiled by the TWS which is totally silent on the cast. It bothers me so much whereby I don't even use my Curado K anymore. I am thinking of changing all my lines to an 8-carrier braid which might sort out the issue. I don't use 8-strand because of its lack of abrasion resistance. But, with Daiwa coming out with the J-Braid Grand, I am willing to give it a try when is in stock in December. The other issue I have like with a lot of Shimano reels is it only comes with an 84mm handle. 84mm to me is unfishable. I can live with 90mm whereby I can then take my time to decide whether I want to upgrade it to 100mm which is what I ultimately prefer and have in most of my reels. But, when you give me an 84mm handle stock right out of the box, you are basically forcing me to upgrade it right away. For a $350 reel, that makes it kind of expensive, but mainly I just don't want to be forced whereby is not even an option.
    Nah, so the Bantam is off my list. I will most likely get the Curado DC, it is only around US$183 in Asia which is essentially the cost of a Curado K. They can't charge you US$250 in Asia when the Scorpion DC is only US$260 which comes with the more advanced I-DC5 as compared to the I-DC4 in the Curado DC.

      I am still out on the use of plastic in the levelwind area whether it be pawl or worm, this area is exposed to a lot of abrasives and can easily be worn using softer/weaker materials.

      @@user-nx8vp5sy5d it's not a simple plastic worm gear, if you would put it into a metal frame really tight and spin it over time the metal would be eaten away and that worm gear still be fine.. so it saves weight and don't compromises durability.. and about long term, there is more problems with daiwa when we're talking about replacement parts, no problemo to find and buy it for shimano. :) This bantam outlast any daiwa, and any shimano or any abu low-profile baitcaster, because of full metal frame and full metal frame comes with better internal part tolerances. Biscally a round reel in a low-profile form.

    Great review! Love my Bantam XG. I think that drain hole on the palming side plate is specifically for water that enters where the brake dial is only. Also, on 30 pound power pro braid, I can cast a weightless 4" yum dinger 30 yards with the flick of the wrist on the G Loomis 843C medium heavy, fast action rod. Might not do as good with fluorocarbon, but I feel like this reel is a better caster than people are giving it credit for.

      What was the diawa you held up in the 36 minute range comparing it to the bantam? Saving up to rebuild my arsenal when I move to Florida next year. Will be throwing baits from trick worms to big swimbaits. Have my swimbait reels already so trying to decide on the balance of reels now (about 10 reels) while keeping it within the Shimano and Diawa families. Did a demo on the bantam and loved it. Trying to figure out which Diawa to blend in with the bantams I plan to puchase. Thanks!!!
      By the way the rambling is also informative so don't feel guilty for adding additional valuable information. lol

    If I had to guess why the Al Micro Module gears are blowing out I’d say it had to do with the rim of the gear flexing as the load tried to force the gears apart. The magnesium frame of the Metanium probably doesn’t help in that regard. Funny thing about high pitch/low module gears is they are very smooth but extremely sensitive to having the proper mesh set and maintained. Any flex that changes the mesh under load and the gears are shot.

    The shorter the teeth, the smoother it will feel. The deeper deeth need bevel cuts along the teeth edges to roll off the main gear a little less "geary" as you say. Imagine: if you had no teeth on the gear, just using friction, you'd feel no gear buzz. The deeper you cut the teeth in, the fewer teeth can be permitted on the gear! Fewer teeth means bumpier transitions since just as much energy has to be transmitted across the harder working fewer teeth, and so you pick up the gear vibe. Micro module solves that with tiny cuts but at the loss of strength, which is all the more reason for at least brass, if not bronze gearing (stronger still). For the trade off, I'll take the weight gain of bronze over aluminum every single time, especially in saltwater. I hope you read this, TA. Great work, you. You should get the Nobel Gear prize from the iCAST commission. Yes yes!

    Talking about heavy reel, the Bantam XG version 8:1 weight at 250 gram which is the same as my older Daiwa Aggrest 100SHL and pose the same problem with levelwind being to close to the spool but for me it is not a big deal for both reel, but i found that Daiwa Aggrest spool the line to the right side which is troublesome.
    Everybody have their own opinion but i judge reel based on how responsive the braking system and how well the cast consistency is and then came to the weight and how well the parts hold against fishing enviroment. I abused all my reels but still do regular maintenance with the result as follow:
    -Abu Garcia Pro Max 3L the pinion gear rub against the body until it support it self and making a noise. The reel only last 3 years.
    -Pflueger Criterion jamed but no brake parts, tried everything didn't work. The reel last 1 year.
    -Kuying Thunder with BFS spool. The spool deformed, the spring holding the thumb bar broke, the line spool to the middle. The reel last 3 months.
    -Shimano Caius 20, the only issue is the levelwind, the line spool to the right side.
    -Shimano Salty One, same issue with Caius 201.
    -Scorpion BFS XG i found it has a black main gear and plastic worm gear and the levelwind cup or whatever people called are the same as regular scorpion and Curado it is not as smooth as 2016 Aldebaran BFS but that black main gear give me a bit confident when fish in saltwater so i switch my Aldebaran BFS as freshwater special reel and both great with straight 60 meter max 0.16mm-0.18mm Nylon and Fluoro.
    Sorry if i get side track and sorry for my english.

    Bought this reel a while ago, insanely good for arigs, oversized cranks. It doesn’t transfer the water resistance through the reel. I got the 8:5:1 and have to keep making mental notes to slow down. Handled many stripers in the 5-12lb range like it was a 200-300 series Calcutta. Favorite reel I’ve ever had. I have one of the earliest Shimano Bantam 100 reels mint in box. Unfortunately, it's missing the manual and the box is far from mint.
    I don't use it but sometimes take it out just to remind me of how things were way back then. Low profile bait-casters have come a long way in the past few decades. I will be buying a JDM Bantam MGL PG shortly. I doubt I'll use it much if any, but I want one in my collection.
    My very first casting reel was the first model Lew's Speed Spool size 100. I wish I still had it, but it was stolen several years ago.
    I would like to find another in very good to mint condition at a price that won't break the bank.
    The little Bantam MGL is a great looking little reel even if its casting performance isn't on par with similar reels.
    I do like all aluminum reels.

    So I have question with the chronarch mgl. The question is should you be able to see the handle wobble when you spin it, should it make a weird grinding with it not under load when reel it, and finally shouldn’t it be silent when I cast it when the reels brand new? Keep in mind I had a chronarch mgl that didn’t have any problems...super solid, quiet when casting and reeling.... but then one of the brakes broke and I sent back to Shimano because for some reason you can’t get a individual brake with out buying a new spool for 60 dollars. Now here’s the thing they Shimano decided to give me a new reel when they could of gave me a new spool. They sent the reel to the wrong person twice lol, and when I got it I sent back because of the problems I noticed that, which they said met factory’s standards. They sent it back and I want to know if I’m right or not that it supposed to be like that?

    I loved this but have a question...I use to fish almost exclusively with the old Bantam 100. All we did was add ball bearings where it had standard oillite bearings...does this reel come in a size equivalent to the old Bantam 100...if not what does? BTW this is for fishing specks and reds in coastal water.

    IMO this can outcast most reels with a 3/4oz lipless and 12-15lb smooth braid, level wind being close shows no signs of not allowing my bombcasts.. Had Antares, didnt cast as far, it it almost did, i didnt feel it that easy. BANTAM COULD FEEL SMOOTHER BUT IT IS THE BEST SMALL FRAMED REEL AFTER TRYING MANY

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Antares wasn't the best caster at least not mine... Comparing the bantam to say a steez or mgxtreme.. They will outcast it.. Not much but I've foundthat on more than a few occasions I couldn't reach a piece of structure that I could with another... It's still the best for pretty much everything else other than max distance

      @@TackleAdvisors thx for u reply. I always go to a lock on a river where a big tree is the target and only use 3/4oz berkley warpig, sebille flat shads.. So for me lures below that not relevant, i have been mad for distance casting since the age of 15 and it was why i started building rods which i do for living now, using NFC blanks... Bombcasting has kind of ruined my head and Bantam yes not as smooth as wish, but capable to reach that tree with an even beefier rod when I suspect catfish and I know its body wont get hurt after fighting fish over 100lb.... Dont like the way Daiwa reels look sorry, neither Abu, except the cheap Revo X with a semi shallow 15g spool from Aliexpress and Boca upgrade, but i used it only to wind people up as I could overcast guys with their Antares DC and other high end show off reels as they were unable to use baitcasting reels hence they bought DCs..

    Yes, that 3/4 profile head shot of the Bantam does look Thor movie-esque. Robotified/Personified. It's frameable. It's a silly thought, but how about a Saturday morning cartoon of robotic fishing reel Superheros, and each one would have it's own powers and super neon lines. The bad guys would be the old Penn 9M, a Senator 6/0 and Diawa 7000C with a scurrilous Zebco 33 as a joker, all in full charicature. But then who'd fish on Saturday mornings? Yeah. Better not.

      Hey buddy! Lemme ask....What makes you want those two things in this package. Curious. The way they designed it. I think adding a clicker that ran off the spool like they all do...Would probably have little or less impact on casting distance than if they added it to the tranx.

    • @piaoliang5467
      @piaoliang5467 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use Daiwa Lexa 300CC (clicker) for catfish. Hate spinning reels on a boat, and don't like big heavy round reels. Also I kind of prefer to use tackle that is slightly underpowered to make my average fight more exciting. I pick tackle for my average fish, not for trophy fish and I never (so far) missed an accidental trophy because of that (u saw the musky video and i have several 41 lb carp on 6 lb line and light tackle). Daiwa Lexa has big gears and small body and fits in my boat compartments so easy, and has clicker for night fishing. But it feels cheap. I have 4, they all feel cheap. They are lose and have some rattle. Do not feel as tight as Shimano, or the Daiwa Ryogas. It bothers me. Sorry for long answer but Daiwa Lexa 300CC has no alternatives on the market. Unless I missed something?

    • @TackleAdvisors
      @TackleAdvisors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't much in reel adjusting you can do to alter the line lay. You can change it slightly with the spool tensioner. But only so much and only makes a slight difference depending on line diameter. I assume it's braid your using? I see this more often with thinner diameter braids. I've also seen reel seats that either aren't aligned properly or the reel foot can be shifted in the seat even when tightened. But yeah... If you look at the worm gear /suoport/ idler gear... It's shimmed pretty tight and much of the back and forth you see is the pawl

    This has bothered me forever and Shimano still never fixed the specs online, this reel has 9 bearings, right? It should be just like the Chronarch MGL (or Curado K + 2 knob bearings) to have a count of 2 main shaft, 1 anti reverse, 2 pinion, 2 spool, 2 knobs. It went back and forth on TackleTour and even though I saw a JDM schematic that confirmed 9 bearings, I had other US buyers swear it was 8 bearings. It is just my OCD, I went with a Steez A and added a G1 SV spool. Just couldn't take that short levelwind, plastic pawl, and stubby handle, aside of that I've only heard great about the Bantam MGL.

    • @kelley71
      @kelley71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you like the Steez A? I am torn. I want a reel for fishing soft plastic shad assassins in the Gulf Coast Bays. I will be fishing it with a short ML 6'6" Fast rod. Looking at Scorpion DC, Chronarch G, or Diawa Steez A. Why do you think they didn't use the SV spool on the Steez A?

    • @logicalrationalfishing7481
      @logicalrationalfishing7481 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daiwa didn't use the SV spool on the Steez A because it is more of an inshore reel. I weighed the stock G1 MagZ Steez A spool at 13 grams with bearing though. It can and will still throw "light" lures, just more like 3/16 w/ plastic or 1/8 with plastic. It would BOMB a Senko, but in all honesty that isn't really a light lure. When I spoke to Daiwa they said they felt that some think SV reels are only control and equipped the Steez A with a MagZ brake system where inshore fisherman could pull more distance out of 3/4+ lures. I moved my Steez A spool to an SS/SV for mid depth cranks. It could honestly still throw a shad rap with the right settings though. I really like my Chronarch MGL, but if you are wanting to throw light lures (1/8 with small plastics or 1/16 area) an SV equipped Daiwa will be the better bet for control & distance.

    • @kelley71
      @kelley71 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I weighed the jig with bait. It comes in a 1/2 oz and 7/16 respectively. The Chronarch G Shimano is saying the designed for the Gulf Coast wade fisherman. They changed the MGL spool out. The Shimano rep showed me a screw in the old one near the spool that was causing electrolysis. Shimano the changed it for a coated screw. The super saline water was literally eating spools. Down here, I have never seen a more polarized view of a fishing reel than the Concept. They either love it or HATE it. There is zero in between. I have had good luck with the new Lews Custom Inshore for bombing skitterwalks, spooks and Paul Brown Fatboys but I lose a lot of distance on plastics. It may be more me than the reel I know I am splitting hairs. I carry 2 rods always. I am looking for any casting advantage on those lighter than half ounce plastics with spooky fish. I also "dare to be different" sometimes. The new Chronarch is butter smooth. The Curado DC I felt was a little "bulky" in my hand. The Diawas are harder to put my hands on. That Steez A is really looking promising, it is 100 more than the Chronarch though.
