RRR Choi Aretha was known to refuse to perform with the air conditioner on because it affected her voice. In an interview the producer of the show said that he promised her it wouldn’t be on but when someone turned it on anyway Aretha walked right out, lol.

@@soulchild2068 the guy who was supposed to cut the air an hour before the rehearsal and performance took a break. So she walked. It messed with her asthma and voice. Good for her. Tge producer sent her flowers and apologized but she wasn't pleased.

Nice interview by Mariah. That Divas Live event was legendary. I don’t think Mariah is shading anyone just telling some facts. The real tea is Aretha outsang those who tried to step up and MC was smart to stand back and watch for many reasons. It was a set up for Aretha to do what she does best. All of the women on that stage were and are accomplished. Queens in their own right but Aretha stands above and beyond them even though many came up in the industry where at a very different time than her. Aretha and many singers like her paved the way. Can’t wait to listen to Mariah’s new cd. Hope it’s good.

No booboo.. the audience came for a show and Aretha knew it. Aretha asked for help & Celine answered. Only Aretha & Celine delivered. Celine had 2 small lines and she killed it. Can't rag on her for singing the same way she sings in all her performances. In truth, nobody would be talking about Divas Live '98 had Celine not belted that G5 riff.

She presents so well in recent interviews. She seems more grounded and is full of grace and humility whilst still retaining that sweetness and humour that make her Mariah. Great recent live performance too. I haven't been happier to see an artist and writer of her calibre emerge with new work and to be welcomed with so much love. She's had a really rough time in recent years, I wish her every happiness and many congratulations to her on her recent number 1's. Wherever that glass ceiling was, girl gone and smashed it. 🙌😍💐

I think I know what Mariah was referring to with the comment that Aretha made "they've been playing games with me - and I'm not gonna play!" I heard the rumor back in the day that one of Aretha's appearence requirements was that the building air-conditioning be shut off while she was on stage or in the building, because dry A/C air can wreak havoc on singer's vocals chords. So the way the story goes is that when Aretha DID take the stage for rehearsals, the building staff or producers had ignored that request of hers, and the central-air was blowing at full-blast. Aretha was so furious she walked off the stage and refused to continue, refused to rehearse any of the songs she would later perform live. And that was why the VH1 Divas Live crew "retaliated" by cutting most (all?) of her solo songs from the final tracklisting of the CD and DVD that was released of the show. I don't know how true that all is, but it sure sounds like something she'd do right? :p
There was a Divas Live documentary that addressed it years ago. The air wasn't on full blast. The crew had shut the air off, but apparently there was a back up a.c. or something like that (I forgot the details) the point is, a crew member went looking around in the basement? or some obscure, unchecked room after Aretha stormed off and refused to return and found that an a.c. was indeed on. The crew didn't cut any of her songs. Crew members have no power to make those kinds of decisions, they are worker bees. Record executives decide what goes on an album and Mariah, Celine, etc. were at the peak of their careers while Aretha's career was in decline. If she had a string of recent hits or was selling out stadiums, she would have had more songs on the album.
@@darkfeather6857 interesting! I'd love to see that documentary for myself, you remember the name of it? One of the other reasons I remember hearing that led producers to not include any of Aretha's solo songs on the CD/DVD was that she took one of the songs she sang live and did a lo-o-o-ong extended outro (like she's been known to do on other TV shows!) like it literally lasted 8-9 minutes long, way past the point where they were trying to "cue" her to get her to stop, so they could start the next song. It's been years since I've seen the actual VH1 Divas Live performance, so I can't remember what song this could possibly be. But yeah, Aretha was definitely a DIVA that night, true to form :-p

Actually the producers of that show have said that Mariah was adamant that she would only agree to Divas if she was the ONLY one to have a solo with Aretha. The first person the show booked with no previous requests was Celine. Now, knowing Mariah and Celine, I think we can agree the producers are telling the truth. Mariah shouldn’t be so stuck up tbh. Lamb here, just so we’re clear!
@MufarosButifulDawtr It might be the case, I haven't seen that Aretha interview. I just remember reading on the VH1 Divas project, and there were many anecdotes about the actual divas participating, and one of those anecdotes was the one I mentioned.

Why is that funny? It's not even noteworthy. Two competitive singers with massive egos tried to upstage each other and when one died, the other sings tributes. That's quite common.

She's only ever sung at one person's funeral and that was Micheal jackson and she get dragged for it because it wasn't a 100% perfect performance, not easy to sing while you've been crying. She also didn't sing at her father's funeral, got her friend/backup singer to sing instead. She was at Whitney's funeral and didn't sing there as well. And many more.

I've heard that the reason the rehearsal did not take place is because the air conditioning was still on after Aretha asked for it to be turned off. So she stormed off stage and went to her trailer until they fixed that "little" problem.

Aretha didn't say "Help me lift it". She said "Help me lift Him" . She may have even exhorted a few shouts of :Higher! Higher!". Those familiar with the Baptist or Pentecostal church tradition would get it. She was inviting them to participate in praise, worship and celebration of something bigger than her, i.e., Spirit It wasn't about the highest notes. It was about the energy. And while the show may have been called "Divas Live" and the other ladies are all incredible artists who deserve to be celebrated for all their talent and accomplishments - there was only one true diva onstage that night. And that was Aretha Franklin.

@@Zarumaans Nothing wrong with any of them stepping it up. If one dared to sing on the same stage as Ms. Franklin it was certainly wise to bring your A-game or just not bother. And let's be honest. She brought hers too. Recently heard a NY Times podcast by a reviewer who was in the room that night. He said when Aretha stepped onstage it was obvious she wasn't there to play. Game on! The same thing happens with jazz musicians. The newbies may be darling of the moment, but the elder masters are not going to be outdone. It's one thing to hit a note. It's another for it to be musical. Aretha's wails and runs actually shimmered, shined and were executed with a musical precision and control similar to a great jazz musician or opera singer. And props to Celine for at least trying. She had youthful energy and nerve but the sound was just not as musical as Ms. Franklin. Those gospel women who mentored her: Clara Ward, Mahalia Jackson, Marion Williams - they whooped, hollered and riffed like that in their sleep. And they taught Aretha to do the same. Celine had nerve but Aretha's training, decades of experience and natural improvisational genius just put her ahead of the pack.
Mimi and Celine are good friends，they both did the right thing that night. Her voice was tired that night, and Aretha was excited to invite some to sing with her, Celine did the job.

What Mariah said here reminds me of Destiny's Child singing with Celine Dion. Beyonce going church on that stage having everyone, including Celine, looking straight at her, lmfao. I love Beyonce, but she really does go nuts. I don't think she had the same mindset as Mariah here to tell herself that she'll take the backseat just to honor the legendary Celine Dion on her own stage.
Celine always gives people respect on her stage and let's them have the spotlight. Aretha wasn't showing that same respect so Celine had to make herself heard.

With that being said, Celine only took Aretha on because she was singing over many of the parts and Carole King didn't even get to sing a line...
Aretha was caught off guard but later she enjoyed the vocal challenge and kept wanting someone to take her on and only Celine stood to the challenge; and due to this, it's the most memorable Divas Live performance and one of the most monumental performances of all time.
Plus I honestly don't think Mariah could have challenged either of them that night, even if she tried; they're voices were in pristine condition and that's when hers started deteriorating (yes, her voice returned some years later though/a second vocal prime). A piercing & melodic whistle note from her would have been a significant highlight though.

Revisit the video? She was there singing with everybody! It does not make any sense. She just said that Aretha deserve respect for all that she represents as a legend in Soul music. That wasn't an arena challenge of who could to reach the higher note. Everybody knows the fact on that stage Mariah it was the only one that could to be appear more if she would want, cuz she has the vocal range more than any other there. But she was keeped in respect position front of somebody that she loves.
