    the mara design is actually brilliant because it is based around the 3 things the demon tried to tempt the buddha with. lust (no explanation required), power (riding on a war chariot) and wealth (chariot is made of gold).

      Demi-Fiend communicates that he’ll grab you by the face and use his demon worms to make you his slave.

    SMT has always fascinated me as it introduced me to several different mythologies and religions and made me check them out of curiosity.
    While I can understand some like Woolie concluding that your belief system is just a wiki page, to me, learning the cultures and and history behind these beliefs has been a reward in of itself. Imagining a world out there where some of these creatures and demons exist in reality is fascinating to think about. While I may not believe in some of them myself, I can't deny being intruiged when thinking about how some people view their world and how that belief influences the way we view it with the knowledge it provides. Beyond that, simply learning about different cultures is fun.

    Angels in general have a robotic theme for understandable reasons, however in Metatron's case it can also be interpreted as him being an artificial angel, since his lore states that he was originally a flesh and blood human who was made an angel by YHVH. For all we know, the Metatron we see in the game could either be a Ghost in the Shell sort of angelic cyborg or like the runner of an Orbital Frame.

    • @Sanodi21
      @Sanodi21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Considering Metatron's position plus how YHVH is usually like in the SMT universes, my take on it is that Metatron is exactly what he wants with Law; a machine that only worships Him, speaks His word, and kills His enemies without question

  • @ApexGale
    @ApexGale 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    My mindset is either double down on the apocalyptic world or just stay in Tokyo. I liked the callback to SMT1 and how you experience the world on the verge of its (second) collapse. But going back to Tokyo after experiencing the really cool Netherworld/Da'at is the wrong play.
    That being said, this game was cool as hell and a really good step forward for mainline SMT in terms of visuals, world design (Da'at, not Toyko) and gameplay ideas. I think in terms of narrative going forward, they should use 4 or Strange Journey as a baseline.
    I did like the subtle foreshadowing of what exactly a Nahobino was at the start. Aogami says your presence revived him, Amanozako mentions she's looking for her soulmate, and Lahmu says he has to find his other half. That, plus the exposition at the start about Life and Knowledge lets you fill in the gaps.

    • @crybirb
      @crybirb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    "What kind of narc picks Law?" I did because neutral was being stupid and the Chaos plan of multiple pantheons was a recipe for disaster. The angels may be in denial but at least they're trying to prevent the Netherworld from attacking humanity. Can you imagine a Narcissist like Zeus being content with other pantheons being in control of other places? It would start a giant war of the gods which puts humanity in the middle; right back where you started. This is coming from someone who loved neutral route in SMT IV and True Demon ending in Nocturne.

In other games like SMT 1 or 4 I would understand hating Law due to them committing genocide to achieve their ideals. In 5 this just isn't the case. The angels want to protect humanity and know that if they win the war Tokyo will be restored as if it had not disappeared in the first place. Neutral somehow looks at this and thinks "They're just as bad as those damn dirty demons!" I just don't get it within the context of 5 specifically.

      My problem with that line of thought is...it did work. Everyone DID work together when YHVH was on the throne, and even after you can help Khonso, recruit Odin, and stop Shiva. Since you become god at the end of the game, able to issue absolute orders, you don't need to brainwash people. Just outlaw war and force the big guys to work together and go from there.
      Like the Khonso and Demeter side quests pretty much show that you can work things out and come together through conflict.

      Walter and Jonathan make a lot more sense if you assume neither of them buy into their chosen alignments, and instead are using them as a means to an end. What Walter wants to create an equal society (law), but he lives within a rigid caste system and believes if he had more power he could destroy the system and be free. Jonathan doesn't actually respect laws or hierarchies (he sidesteps every rule, law, and authority figure he meets), but he's willing to do anything to protect Mikado from becoming like Tokyo, which means siding with law. They ironically would be better fits for the opposites allignment, and if either had known there was a 3rd path they both would have taken it.

    As fantastic as this game was to play, I gotta say the story was kinda ass. I didn’t need a Persona-style mega story with social links and a 10-hour climax, but I would have liked to have at least ONE character that I remotely gave a shit about. SMT IV (and Apocalypse) did a great job of taking the typical heavy, apocalyptic SMT story and injecting it with enough interesting characters that I at least cared to see what happened to them.
    This game was just a borderline copy-paste Nocturne’s story (especially the endings). And while Nocturne didn’t have the most compelling plot either, it did have this eerie, messed-up setting, and the situation was given a real sense of importance and gravitas that made it feel like you were deciding the end of the world. Here, you keep jumping back to the normal world and it seems like Tokyo is the only place being affected by anything, which makes it really unclear as to how much is at stake. The backstory of where exactly all the factions came from is barely explained, and lots of stuff that was set up as big mysteries at the start get casually revealed at random times with no apparent reason. For example: Why was Aogami’s identity even a secret? It affected literally nothing.
    I feel like any criticism of this game’s story just gets responded to with, “Go play Persona then, loser!” but there’s plenty of SMT games that have great plots, and this one just seems really bare-bones and half-assed by comparison.

I really hope some day I can sit down and play from start to definitive end but there's just so much and it's very obtuse when you don't know what the game is asking of you

      if you got to the A2 segment, you have about an hour or 2 left, more if you do all the sidequests, so once your get ending C or D, you can literally just load up the last part to get the opposite and then the true ending, so if your feeling a little burned out, just beeline the main quest. A similar thing actually happened to me in dragon age inquisitions, where i stopped playing the game, a literal quest before the end, not realizing, tired after doing all the side quests. It taught me something, and that thats sometimes a game doesnt tell you how close you are to beating it, and that sometimes, you should just let the side quests go, and maybe do them in an older save later if your even curious about them.

      @@AKPC001 While I kind of hate the story/side quest % complete because it can ruin game endings, it may have been helpful to suggest A, B, C, and D as separate playthroughs. RE does this really well by just showing you here's all the different "stories" you can play but you have to beat A to unlock B's remix scenario.

      @@richardjohnson8991 I suppose so, having played the original Nier, i had more of an attachment to the series as well as an idea of how it'd go, i didnt realize that id switch to 9s for part B, so even if it was the whole first story all over again, since it was a different character who played differently, it felt fresh enough, then with Part C/D being completely different, more or less made it feel "new" if that makes any sense. But i think what people want with games changes with age, cause you go from a kid with tons of time but no cash, to an adult with cash to no time, so wanting to know *when* you can complete it tends to take priority to the rest of it, otherwise it sits on your backlog for a year, then when you fire it up, you beat it in an hour, or restart it to refresh yourself and run into the same problem of not finishing and letting it sit.

      @@richardjohnson8991 i suppose that was just a long winded way to say, just beat it so you dont have to look at it or think about it anymore. For some reason, half complete games annoy me when i pass them on my list, i dont know about you.

    The thing I loved the most about SMT V is the true neutral road being Anti-theism. It's simply something SMT weirdly enough rarely talks about, and it's wonderfully done. I loved the dialogue choices too because you can go "yeah team human all the way fuck this demon bullshit" road and it works quite well. The only problem is that the game feels MORE empty than other SMTs, a lot of things really don't happen and the side quests are just pointless most of time, I feel like SMT 4 and 3 had more impact to them.

    My biggest problem with Smtv is every human character is really generic and bland. The blond kid has everything happen to him off screen and we never spend any time so his transistion in the game makes no fucking sense. Thr kid with glasses does absolutely nothing ever so i never cared sbout him and the the prime minister just shows up and gives us no reason to trust him. Then the officer guy just wants to let humans die and only have the strong survive so he wasn't interesting. Only the demons were remotely interesting which sux bc the story clearly tries to make you think the human characters matter but....... they just don't

      it takes too many cues from nocturne in that the cast and ideologies are only represented at their most basic level. In fact Nocturne's alignments WERE so basic in the first place is because they don't follow the traditional law/nuetral/chaos formula. If SMTV was nocturne with a better cast it'd be my favorite smt of all time.

    The story and characters in 5 just suck. Its so bare bones and flaccid, none of the characters or their alignments are fleshed out and you're not given any reason to feel invested in them. In the end I sided with Nuwa and Yakumo just because they were the only characters in the game with interesting visual designs

    I'd have given this a try if it wasn't on the switch but tbh i can't get into SMT games outside of P3-4-5 and devil summoner. The combat system is so repetitive and always pretty much the same over and over, i've tried P1, SMT3 and DDS and i just got bored.
