Fun Fact: Hardcore murdering bullies has been a thing since literally the very beginning of Megami Tensei. The original sci-fi novel from the 80s that the entire franchise is based on was about some shit kid who invented demon summoning because he wanted to get super revenge on a bunch of other shit kids who beat him up.
A quick note about the choices and endings. While it is true that you can just pick which ending you want there will be like a slight consequence/annoyance if you're choosing a ending where it doesn't align with the alignment you're on kinda like how they did in smt 4 apocalypse.
My issue with 4’s method is that most players will naturally skew Law because, in my experience, people like to be nice and not an asshole. I respect the vision but I wish it was easier to follow what you actually wanted and not what the game says you want. Also the range for neutral was like really narrow.

IIRC it was implied that he didn't foresee losing control over Loki, so he probably didn't intend to kill his bullies, more like rough them up a bit (though how you do that with a monstrosity like Loki is a mystery to me, admittedly).

MT2 was a lot better since it dropped the whole Nakajima stuff, but even then SMT was really when the series came into its own. Also MT2 protag is way cooler than Nakajima anyway.

Not on the school grounds, it's somehow even more heinous in that the victim was killed at his own birthday party; He was unlucky enough to live on the same street as the bully, who rocked up and tl;dr his mom found his corpse in his room on fucking birthday. I had nightmares for weeks after me and my friend had to keep comforting his sister, who happened to be in our history class. The grief was unreal, but the teachers apparently weren't allowed to do shit, so it was up to fellow kids to help her out when she would just break down. Christ. He was moved to another school, but never punished otherwise... Because this happened in South Florida, his uncle worked for the police, and we were all still underage when it happened so the legal shit was a mess and it was an easy case to dismiss by some jackass judge who just didn't feel like working it all out. The twist? I found out like years after I ran away from that fucking place that he was eventually killed in a homicide when he was in his early 20s. In this case, I'd say the bullying was worse and the homicide was justice. Also, when I say never go to Florida, I'm telling you to never go to fucking Florida.

There’s not much here. Things are overpriced, people drive like shit, and most folks here have more than a couple screws loose. Some way more than others. My theory on it is that this is a melting pot, a cesspool if you will, of different cultures all in one spot and you add lax laws, low paying wages, high costs of living, and a constant steady stream of new immigrants coming in that don’t know the rules to this already fucked jungle, and the stress that comes with being here, and you’ve got yourself a South Florida.

Not gonna lie I actually sighed thinking they'd turned it into a Persona game, only for like 10 minutes later to go YEAH no school baby! I know people like the social aspects of those games, but I'm here for the are we gonna kill God today plots more. It's why I love SMT so much more.
Maybe it gets different after chapter 2 but as someone who's finished with the first Netherworld up to after the Diet Building, I think school is going to be a lot more improtant than you'd think...
I think it's worth pointing out that *most* of the super giant demons you see? A lot of them are tied to quests for *way* later. Like that giant golem? Near the end of the third area do you get a quest to take care of him, mid-40s Edit: There's actually a chance to find the Aogami essences when you have a partner, but still dont waste them
I dunno if the partners themselves affect the odds of finding essences, all I know is that Hua Po dug up not one but TWO Type-6 essences when I already had it, I hate it here
There's an area near the end of the game (the Egypt Bridge) where the Aogami essences have an high drop rate so, while I recommend not wasting for resistences like Woolie has, it is not the end of the world if they are wasted or you miss one.
they didn't give up on anything, all other SMTs save for 4 were way more lenient on the law and chaos choices. I think that staying neutral in 4 was so difficult because it fit the themeing of the game.
I think the reason why the Sahori stuff works isn't because "boohoo tragic backstory cut to swing flashback" it's that it's really not her fault that a literal demon capitalized on her torment and more or less brainwashed her into killing her tormentors.
Sahori: "I can't just go around murdering people. Even if they are bad it's still murder!" Lahmu: "Nah it's okay. Since you were the one being bullied you get *one."*
Imagine the next Persona game, the MC is a 70 year old forming up an investigation squad in an old folks home to pass the time and re-discover how to be their real selves after lives spent being choiceless company drones 80 hours a week for the last five decades. Struggle and develop bonds with the family you never saw during the corporate grind.
Then the dementia acts up for all of them and none of them can remember what they were doing. Then the Persona's have to keep reminding them and it gets super annoying so people just skip dialogue.
Not to over-nuance the homicide scenario, but those were some Advanced Bullies. Like they were physically assaulting that girl and sending her into a trauma coma. Murder is severe but she deserved to slap those two around at the least.
Admittedly, even as a long time SMT fan, I was genuinely shocked when the bully plot really did end with "those bullies just die really hard". After the general tone of IV Apocalypse past its prologue, I was concerned that the SMT series had lost its teeth when it comes to really brutal, raw stories. I was under the impression that the conflict with the bullies would end with the usual anime thing of "nooo I'm gonna snap out of it and come to my morals at the last moment and spare them, and we all learn from this experience and become better!". Only for the shocking yet refreshing smack to the face that no, they're just gonna go all-in on this.
And then Vengeance did that and gave us an option to save Sahori...only for the demons to kill her for it because nuh uh, you don't get to puss out on this one girl, you either commit or death. But at the same time, tracking down Sahori's killer is a better motivation for Area 2 than "we need to save the school shooter"
Believe the hype about the Demi Fiend dlc boss fight... Holy fuck I went back with my Nahobino at 99 along with all 99 demons.... My team besides Nahobino was gone in about 2 turns and my Nahobino was killed by turn 4, would have been turn 2 but I had a life restorative item.... One more God rejected indeed.....
You cannot have resistances, null or drain on the Nahobino for that fight, Demi Fiend is coded to flat out kill you if you do, your demons are fine, but one with null physical will get almighty smacked hard, which you can take advantage off tbf. It works a bit like the DDS Avatar Tuner 1 encounter, your main prio is figuring out what causes Gaea Rage to activate and prevent it, the encounter is less BS then the one in DDS mind you, that one was just pure torture compared to this one.
@@DecoyBlackMage What kind of resistance? it is hard to set a demon on your Nahobino with absolutely no resistances at all.... Is it even possible? I tried it with my Nahobino set to Hell Biker's resistance plus ice null and he just murdered my group with his physical specials along with his motley crew. I then brought out the Null all squad and put pretty much null all on my Nahobino and that is when he got pissed and started Freikugal spamming and his boy started Megidolaning my ass to death. Not sure how to take him honestly.
@@DecoyBlackMage Still worth it for the fiend fusions at various levels throughout the game and if worse comes to worse you can cheese Demi-Fiend on saftey mode for the easy Demi-Fiend Essence card and fight him again at your leisure if you want if you manage to git gud (which I haven't).
@@xsoultillerx Yeah the characters and the interactions with them. Though the only real memorable ones in SMT games are always the demons and you don't really care about any of the humans or the representatives of ideals unless they actually make a point to make you care about them.
I'm running a Almighty Mag/Support build and it's been real fun, I'm glad that Woolie brought up Demon Builds. It's never been easier, or more effective, to have a team of de/buffers, casters, phys attackers (of both non- and full elemental types) and stupidly clutch ailments attached to skills that also debuff (and always land the debuff, even if the ailment misses) Items have been great too, SMTV is a good damn full plate of a game.

I just wanted to say that to get the true neutral ending there's a set of conditions you need to fill but according to the internet no one really sure what those conditions are Some people luck into it
SPOILERS The conditions are apparently just finish all the major sub quest lines (Khonsu, Demeter, Amanozako, Fionn, etc.) and beat the super boss that isn’t Demi-Fiend while picking the “neutral” ending option when asked.
@@koheikyouji I haven't cleared them either as I opted to just start a new playthrough on hard afterwards but from what I've heard you do have to make those healer demons a priority. Good luck with bringing them down eventually.

Get on that Fiend DLC, it has a small story to it that gives you context to what happened before the events of the SMTV and what Demi-Fiend's been up to since he k-punched god in the face. Also the Fiends are just dope I dunno why'd you pass up on it.
16:00 I loved seeing both Pat and Woolie struggle and be wrong for a good 30 seconds before they both realized they were both kind of right. For the record, Orochi doesn’t appear until much later, and Drake is the correct race, so for once, Pat was right without summoning Crazy Talk.
Thank you, Pat! The SMT IV alignment system is bullshit! I wanted to go Neutral, and I got stuck with Law! I felt cheated, and the ending made me feel like shit. First experience ruined.
I had to use a guide after I aborted my first playthrough thanks to having a save from before meeting the Whites to get neutral after learning of how the point system works
That happened to me in Strange Journey for neutral in 4 it seems like you need to pick one until that very point then take the "heel" turn and go "well fuck you"
Random note btw, it was funny I listened to this while playing the Switch version of Ys VIII and that game has the FPS drops on enemies and da sometimes chugging

I feel like running any build in SMT 5 is easier because the game only gives you one point to freely allocate and randomizes the rest. That way the Nahoscrimblo isn't too squishy and unbalanced, while Flynn and Nanashi in 4 and 4A can put over 200 points in magic and be a literal expensive piece of china in an elephant reserve.

Strange Journey Redux also has a really good Law ending. But then SJR has no bad endings, all the routes make a good point and are well-developed. I've also seen people argue that SMT2 has a good Law ending which I KINDA agree with but not fully.
Persona is a school drama about kids who go to school by day, and save the world at night with supernatural events that happen in secret, where boring adults don't see. SMT is about the end of the world by nuclear fire and the gods want a piece. Go wild.
With gospels, you'll likely only get about 10 or so throughout the game unless you get pretty lucky with grey mitamas. And the highest level random encounter is 87, with the level scaling it's very hard to grind past 90. Meanwhile you can just stuff a few gospels down your throat instead of grinding for a long time at the end. If you have the mitama dlc then use em all you want of course, but if you don't then yeah, they're pretty limited and you level up real fast on hitting a new area anyway.

Generally, yes. Especially when one is unjustly compared to the other. People like to treat SMT like the black sheep, like it didn’t literally come first and pave the way for Persona. It’s just this odd, sort of revisionist history thing that a lot of the uninformed people belonging to the cultural zeitgeist have adopted. So, yeah, you tend to get some push back from people who actually know what’s up. Basically saying “that’s not how it is and I know it”. It’s totally cool to like both things! Both are awesome and interesting, people are going to find things they like or don’t like from either property. That said, if you fall into that camp, the division is always going to be there. There’s never really going to be harmony among fans when it comes to this one, probably. There are people who have their preferences and literally think you’re wrong for having different ones than theirs - or even think you’re wrong for informing them of objective realities, that’s the climate we live in now.

as far as smt goes only nocturne got that. Strange journey got a remake/sequal like 7 years later, amd smtiv got a literal sequal. that is more a persona thing
@@CrossRetro Apocalypse was originally just an upgraded version of 4, but development kinda spiraled out of control and we got Final/Apocalypse out of it. Basically these days a second version is more common then it used to be, that said every game in the series has multiple versions, albeit the Snes games got PSX ports that did add and change things etc. Thats where the Fiend theme originated from actually. So it is very likely SMT5 will get a second version in a year or two, but honestly they are usually two entirely different games, so buy and enjoy I say, there is still merit to vanilla 3-4 and 5 in their own quirky ways.
Maybe. If you aren't super interested and waiting a year or two isn't a problem for you, go for it. But it is absolutely no guarantee that this game will get a rerelease. The last SMT game got a direct sequel instead of an expansion. And now they could possibly release it as DLC as well. It's a great game as is. If SMTV does get a expanded edition, and you end up really liking the game you could always buy the expanded edition later. It's probabely going to take a while anyway. And maybe you won't like the game that much. I don't think a expanded edition would add anything that would make you feel otherwise. So unless money is a problem, why not try it now.
Is there really no way to get Aogami type1 essence again?? I 1st read that skill as something like deal 8 physical damage and goes fuck that. Saw video of it and it's actually 8 hit and is real cool? and I just fucked?
A few things. You can get those essences again. Usually through your guide demon. But also don't worry. Aramasa is a good move but you will get other better moves.
One thing I've noticed is that if you're not lore-saavy to smt the latter half of the game feels aimless with nothing happening but if you know enough of the series then you realize how dire the situation the game is building and its quite interesting. The character's don't matter in this game lol and are usually just vehicles for the idelogies, but man SMTV took a card from Nocturne on this one and somehow did it worse.
Gonna take this opportunity to recommend The Bards Tale 4 Directors cut. Currently on sale on steam. One of the few team turn based games that has combat which gave me the same feeling as Darkest Dungeon and SMT. The game is kinda jank. I'd recommend play 1:50:00 or so and get a refund if it doesn't click within that time frame.
Similar to smt5 Bards tale 4 has very weird explorable area's. Lots of things that look like you can walk on but can't. This is because it was originally designed with a tile and grid based movement system. Which can be turned on and off in the options.
Woolie talking about not having context for matador when the context is he warps you to battle zone, talks shit then fights you. There doesn't need to be context, they're just cool strong bosses
The more specific context is that Matador fights you ABSURDLY early on and is built like a brick shithouse. You fight him at level 20 and he's busting out a +4 Sukukaja if he ever falls below +1, Dekundas himself if you try to debuff, has Beast Eye, and near the end of the fight he'll spam Taunt before Focus + his equivalent of Deathbounding you until you die. He's a boss you'd expect to fight in the mid-30s, and you don't even have the goddamn Compendium until after you beat him. He's the realest motherfucker who ever was. He's a boss who was designed as a meat-wall for people who didn't know how important buffs/debuffs were because they were coming off Final Fantasy 10, at a time when you have zero resources, and one of his few weaknesses (he uses Force) only comes into effect if you fuse the ONE demon that has Null Force below level 20 and buy a Magatama worth 8k in the town maybe 15 minutes before him.
@@Terramagu tbf, there's a reason people use that one meme image with Mataor that I can't repeat because YT doesn't like the r word. While Matador will remove debuffs on him, he won't ever take away YOUR buffs unlike later bosses. So if you brought buffing demons then you'll simply have too high of stats for him to be able to do anything about it. The difficulty is in the fact that the game asks you to figure that out on your own.
I've tried the game on switch and also the "Nintendo PC" as I like to call it, and a lot of the time (when it's not bugging out, new game and all that) it runs better on the Nintendo PC. Still bad, but not as bad. Though in it's own way the Nintendo PC can be worse with the bugs; just much better with the frame rate.
There's no way they're not porting this thing around once exclusivity ends. They wouldn't have used the Unreal Engine if that wasn't the case, especially since UE4 has a _terrible_ goddamn time with exporting Switch games.

If you have a decent PC, you can always play it on emulator, it runs a lot better . And if you feel bad because it's technically piracy, you can always buy a copy of the game to support Atlus.

I dunno if the partners themselves affect the odds of finding essences, all I know is that Hua Po dug up not one but TWO Type-6 essences when I already had it, I hate it here
There's an area near the end of the game (the Egypt Bridge) where the Aogami essences have an high drop rate so, while I recommend not wasting for resistences like Woolie has, it is not the end of the world if they are wasted or you miss one.
they didn't give up on anything, all other SMTs save for 4 were way more lenient on the law and chaos choices. I think that staying neutral in 4 was so difficult because it fit the themeing of the game.

I think the reason why the Sahori stuff works isn't because "boohoo tragic backstory cut to swing flashback" it's that it's really not her fault that a literal demon capitalized on her torment and more or less brainwashed her into killing her tormentors.

Not to over-nuance the homicide scenario, but those were some Advanced Bullies. Like they were physically assaulting that girl and sending her into a trauma coma. Murder is severe but she deserved to slap those two around at the least.
Admittedly, even as a long time SMT fan, I was genuinely shocked when the bully plot really did end with "those bullies just die really hard". After the general tone of IV Apocalypse past its prologue, I was concerned that the SMT series had lost its teeth when it comes to really brutal, raw stories. I was under the impression that the conflict with the bullies would end with the usual anime thing of "nooo I'm gonna snap out of it and come to my morals at the last moment and spare them, and we all learn from this experience and become better!". Only for the shocking yet refreshing smack to the face that no, they're just gonna go all-in on this.
And then Vengeance did that and gave us an option to save Sahori...only for the demons to kill her for it because nuh uh, you don't get to puss out on this one girl, you either commit or death. But at the same time, tracking down Sahori's killer is a better motivation for Area 2 than "we need to save the school shooter"

Believe the hype about the Demi Fiend dlc boss fight... Holy fuck I went back with my Nahobino at 99 along with all 99 demons.... My team besides Nahobino was gone in about 2 turns and my Nahobino was killed by turn 4, would have been turn 2 but I had a life restorative item.... One more God rejected indeed.....
You cannot have resistances, null or drain on the Nahobino for that fight, Demi Fiend is coded to flat out kill you if you do, your demons are fine, but one with null physical will get almighty smacked hard, which you can take advantage off tbf.
It works a bit like the DDS Avatar Tuner 1 encounter, your main prio is figuring out what causes Gaea Rage to activate and prevent it, the encounter is less BS then the one in DDS mind you, that one was just pure torture compared to this one.
So is it not worth getting that dlc until you are at endgame?

@@DecoyBlackMage What kind of resistance? it is hard to set a demon on your Nahobino with absolutely no resistances at all.... Is it even possible? I tried it with my Nahobino set to Hell Biker's resistance plus ice null and he just murdered my group with his physical specials along with his motley crew. I then brought out the Null all squad and put pretty much null all on my Nahobino and that is when he got pissed and started Freikugal spamming and his boy started Megidolaning my ass to death. Not sure how to take him honestly.
@@DecoyBlackMage Still worth it for the fiend fusions at various levels throughout the game and if worse comes to worse you can cheese Demi-Fiend on saftey mode for the easy Demi-Fiend Essence card and fight him again at your leisure if you want if you manage to git gud (which I haven't).

Yeah the characters and the interactions with them. Though the only real memorable ones in SMT games are always the demons and you don't really care about any of the humans or the representatives of ideals unless they actually make a point to make you care about them.

I'm running a Almighty Mag/Support build and it's been real fun, I'm glad that Woolie brought up Demon Builds. It's never been easier, or more effective, to have a team of de/buffers, casters, phys attackers (of both non- and full elemental types) and stupidly clutch ailments attached to skills that also debuff (and always land the debuff, even if the ailment misses)
Items have been great too, SMTV is a good damn full plate of a game.

I just wanted to say that to get the true neutral ending there's a set of conditions you need to fill but according to the internet no one really sure what those conditions are

The conditions are apparently just finish all the major sub quest lines (Khonsu, Demeter, Amanozako, Fionn, etc.) and beat the super boss that isn’t Demi-Fiend while picking the “neutral” ending option when asked.

After clearing the Diet building it became very clear that I needed to hit abort and finally play Nocturne
16:00 I loved seeing both Pat and Woolie struggle and be wrong for a good 30 seconds before they both realized they were both kind of right. For the record, Orochi doesn’t appear until much later, and Drake is the correct race, so for once, Pat was right without summoning Crazy Talk.
Thank you, Pat! The SMT IV alignment system is bullshit! I wanted to go Neutral, and I got stuck with Law! I felt cheated, and the ending made me feel like shit. First experience ruined.
That alignment shit triggered my own mind goblins and was part of the reason I never finished it.
I had to use a guide after I aborted my first playthrough thanks to having a save from before meeting the Whites to get neutral after learning of how the point system works
if i understand right, Neutral will make you feel worse.
That happened to me in Strange Journey for neutral in 4 it seems like you need to pick one until that very point then take the "heel" turn and go "well fuck you"

I feel like running any build in SMT 5 is easier because the game only gives you one point to freely allocate and randomizes the rest. That way the Nahoscrimblo isn't too squishy and unbalanced, while Flynn and Nanashi in 4 and 4A can put over 200 points in magic and be a literal expensive piece of china in an elephant reserve.

With gospels, you'll likely only get about 10 or so throughout the game unless you get pretty lucky with grey mitamas. And the highest level random encounter is 87, with the level scaling it's very hard to grind past 90. Meanwhile you can just stuff a few gospels down your throat instead of grinding for a long time at the end. If you have the mitama dlc then use em all you want of course, but if you don't then yeah, they're pretty limited and you level up real fast on hitting a new area anyway.

Generally, yes. Especially when one is unjustly compared to the other. People like to treat SMT like the black sheep, like it didn’t literally come first and pave the way for Persona. It’s just this odd, sort of revisionist history thing that a lot of the uninformed people belonging to the cultural zeitgeist have adopted. So, yeah, you tend to get some push back from people who actually know what’s up. Basically saying “that’s not how it is and I know it”.
It’s totally cool to like both things! Both are awesome and interesting, people are going to find things they like or don’t like from either property. That said, if you fall into that camp, the division is always going to be there. There’s never really going to be harmony among fans when it comes to this one, probably. There are people who have their preferences and literally think you’re wrong for having different ones than theirs - or even think you’re wrong for informing them of objective realities, that’s the climate we live in now.

@@CrossRetro Apocalypse was originally just an upgraded version of 4, but development kinda spiraled out of control and we got Final/Apocalypse out of it.
Basically these days a second version is more common then it used to be, that said every game in the series has multiple versions, albeit the Snes games got PSX ports that did add and change things etc. Thats where the Fiend theme originated from actually.
So it is very likely SMT5 will get a second version in a year or two, but honestly they are usually two entirely different games, so buy and enjoy I say, there is still merit to vanilla 3-4 and 5 in their own quirky ways.
Maybe. If you aren't super interested and waiting a year or two isn't a problem for you, go for it. But it is absolutely no guarantee that this game will get a rerelease. The last SMT game got a direct sequel instead of an expansion. And now they could possibly release it as DLC as well. It's a great game as is. If SMTV does get a expanded edition, and you end up really liking the game you could always buy the expanded edition later. It's probabely going to take a while anyway. And maybe you won't like the game that much. I don't think a expanded edition would add anything that would make you feel otherwise. So unless money is a problem, why not try it now.
My hot performance tip for SMT V is that it's a resolution problem. Because it runs fucking smoooooth in handheld but is nigh unplayable docked.
Is there really no way to get Aogami type1 essence again?? I 1st read that skill as something like deal 8 physical damage and goes fuck that. Saw video of it and it's actually 8 hit and is real cool? and I just fucked?
A few things. You can get those essences again. Usually through your guide demon. But also don't worry. Aramasa is a good move but you will get other better moves.
SMTV is great but the story is bit of missed oportunity and most characters are forgetable af.
One thing I've noticed is that if you're not lore-saavy to smt the latter half of the game feels aimless with nothing happening but if you know enough of the series then you realize how dire the situation the game is building and its quite interesting. The character's don't matter in this game lol and are usually just vehicles for the idelogies, but man SMTV took a card from Nocturne on this one and somehow did it worse.

One of the few team turn based games that has combat which gave me the same feeling as Darkest Dungeon and SMT.

Similar to smt5 Bards tale 4 has very weird explorable area's.
Lots of things that look like you can walk on but can't.
This is because it was originally designed with a tile and grid based movement system.

Much as I really liked SMT4, the True Neutral ending grind was ball busting I agree.
Woolie talking about not having context for matador when the context is he warps you to battle zone, talks shit then fights you. There doesn't need to be context, they're just cool strong bosses
The more specific context is that Matador fights you ABSURDLY early on and is built like a brick shithouse.
You fight him at level 20 and he's busting out a +4 Sukukaja if he ever falls below +1, Dekundas himself if you try to debuff, has Beast Eye, and near the end of the fight he'll spam Taunt before Focus + his equivalent of Deathbounding you until you die.
He's a boss you'd expect to fight in the mid-30s, and you don't even have the goddamn Compendium until after you beat him. He's the realest motherfucker who ever was. He's a boss who was designed as a meat-wall for people who didn't know how important buffs/debuffs were because they were coming off Final Fantasy 10, at a time when you have zero resources, and one of his few weaknesses (he uses Force) only comes into effect if you fuse the ONE demon that has Null Force below level 20 and buy a Magatama worth 8k in the town maybe 15 minutes before him.
@@Terramagu tbf, there's a reason people use that one meme image with Mataor that I can't repeat because YT doesn't like the r word. While Matador will remove debuffs on him, he won't ever take away YOUR buffs unlike later bosses. So if you brought buffing demons then you'll simply have too high of stats for him to be able to do anything about it. The difficulty is in the fact that the game asks you to figure that out on your own.

I've tried the game on switch and also the "Nintendo PC" as I like to call it, and a lot of the time (when it's not bugging out, new game and all that) it runs better on the Nintendo PC. Still bad, but not as bad. Though in it's own way the Nintendo PC can be worse with the bugs; just much better with the frame rate.
