How to Become a Trauma/Critical Care Surgeon!

- In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Tatiana Cardenas, a General Trauma/Critical Care Surgeon about life as a trauma surgeon, why she chose to pursue this path, and advice for the budding general/trauma surgeons!
Dr. Cardenas was born in Houston, TX and raised in Miami, FL. She graduated from the University of Miami in 2005 with a B.S in Microbiology and Immunology. Having trained as dancer for most of her life, she took a leave of absence during her studies at the University of Miami to perform in NYC in the Broadway show '42nd Street: The Musical'. In 2007 she was accepted into Meharry Medical College School of Medicine and graduated in 2012 with her M.D as well as her M.S in Biomedical Sciences. During her matriculation at Meharry she received honors and awards including The Pfizer Minority Medical Scholarship and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Outside of work she still enjoys dance, boating, traveling, being on the water, hot weather and Brazilian soccer. Currently, she is a trauma and critical care surgery fellow at UTHSCSA.

Having been in EMS since 2010, it's comforting to know that now that I'm becoming an MI, I can still balance my goals of becoming a trauma surgeon, and a father, both in view. I like that now when I clock out, I'm done with work, and that carrying into my next profession is welcome news.

I personally like Dr Tatiana, she looks so young and reserved but knowledgeable. My one aspect in an important job as this is to keep low key and do what you are good at so that you don't burn out in the event of trying to maintain status.

First off, I truly appreciate all the careers in medicine videos. I am entering a US medical school in fall and enjoy getting exposed to careers that I didnt even know exist. Secondly, I was wondering if you have any contact information (that you can share) for the trauma surgeon.

I wish there was a little more detail in regards to lifestyle. I have always been fascinated by trauma but I feared the schedule was too unpredictable and might prevent a difficult quality of life for a mom or wife.
Another big one is dealing with what I perceive as the increased risk of patient death due to the seriousness of injuries you see. Maintaining resiliency, preventing survivors guilt, etc

I looked into trauma surgery on the internet and was surprised to learn that it is stereotyped as a specialty which does not operate much and instead takes care of other surgeons’ patients. This is the exact opposite of what I thought trauma surgery would be 🤷♂️

Yes, you have to re certify every 10 years, which means taking your board exams every 10 yrs

Residents and Fellows receive annual salaries, health and dental from the hospitals in which they see patients.
How many trauma surgeons are on duty at one time?
Depends on:
Hospital capacity
Current morbidity/mortality trends
However, there is protocol. You have the junior registrar(s) (junior resident), senior registrar(s) present at the hospital in rotation depending on their choice of medical specialty.
Then there is 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th physician on call especially for surgery.

It depends on the location & the level 1 trauma center capacity,, for Example: a trauma surgeon in NY make alot more than a trauma surgeon on North Dakota. Those surgeons literally burst their buts at work. It's an average of 380$.
How much do trauma surgeons make after residency in Texas? Because you said you are expecting to be paid 600k-700k a year after residency but Google says otherwise. I'm thinking you probably know better than Google lol

It's pretty much a safe bet that if your a carribean medical student, surgery little more than a dream. A few students I know with 254+ on step 1 and 2 weren't even called for interviews for surgery or cardiology. They wound up in family or internal. unless you have some deep connections as in parents who are in the field. Know that the moment your big toe leaves states for carribean medical school, your oreety going to be either family or internal. No matter how good your step grades are, the hospitals will select a student from America first, even if your an American citizen. And competitive socialites are almost always exclusive for American top gunners. You can be the best carribean student, you'll be outshined by a student who a top gunner in America.
You know a few students really? Caribbean schools usually do not have a lot of students with 250+ on STEP 1 so how do you know a few? people on the internet always claiming to know a few with no proof whatsoever.
You do know that Ross and St George have a match list available to the public and you can see the surgery matches right?

How about you face your life and not worry about what specialty Carribean students want to go into? Every year, lots of IMGs match into surgery. Its hard like everything else in life.
Also how will they get interviews for cardiology? Cardiology is a fellowship. Just stop right now please because its obvious you do not know anyone with such scores
Don't be offended madam. It's imperative you not lie to your self and accept facts. those are facts. Matter of fact, you can search up a few people who got high scores on youtube land. One student from the carrib got a verified 254 on step 1 and 2 and wound up in internal so there's your single proof. I can provide with a lengthy list. According to NRMP charting outcomes for IMG the average step grade for IMG to internal is 240! and according to their data, student's with step 2ck grades of Between 241 and 250 only 24 got accepted!
so what bullshit list are you looking at? the one that Ross and SGU provides LMAO. According to ECFMG, " Compared to 2016, the number of international medical graduates (IMGs) who participated in the Match decreased by 435. While the number of IMGs who matched to first-year positions decreased by 47, the percentage of IMGs who matched increased. Of the 12,355 IMGs who participated in the 2017 Match, 6,591 (53.3%) matched. In the 2016 Match, 6,638 (51.9%) IMGs were matched to first-year positions. (The preceding data include a very small number of Fifth Pathway applicants who participated in the 2016 and 2017 Matches. For 2017, these data include two Fifth Pathway participants who are not represented in the data below.)
Of the 7,284 IMG participants who were not U.S. citizens, 3,814 (52.4%) obtained first-year positions. The number of non-U.S. citizen IMGs who obtained positions increased in 2017 for the sixth year in a row, this year by 45.
Of the 5,069 U.S. citizen IMG participants, 2,777 (54.8%) were matched to first-year positions, a decrease of 92 from last year. The number of U.S. citizen IMGs matching to first-year positions has increased in 12 of the last 14 Matches" .
Not saying saying there's anything wrong with it. It's medicine. But Based on what he said about his personality and goal. He's competitive. You really think with scores like that he didn't apply to surgery?? Best believe your last dollar he did. So pipe down and go back to reading your kaplan notes and uworld qbank. You can always do a fellowship after you do your Internal so you looking at about 3 years before you even apply to fellowship in surgery. But That's assuming you actually make it to internal. Because the majority of Caribbeans wind up in Family along side D.O. Those facts. Not my facts. Get them straight from AAMC. Most of the Top gunners Carribeans scoring high grades on Step are getting Internal, and family is for everyone else who scores average or passes, and only after they've accepted the American Medical student's first. The reason why most will not is simply because of the time. If you do your Internal you spend 3 years, then another 5 surgery, that's 8 years spent trying to practice medicine. If you start your residencies in your late 20's you're in your mid 30's by time it's all said in done. Then add in that 5 years. so your nearing 40 year's old. If you're rich and have finances like that to blow on rent, and living expensive while you Finnish up. then yea, you have a shot at surgery AFTER YOU get into internal. Because Surgery isn't open to family medicine student's

Do not be bitter. You said you know a few? People on youtube are not people you know. again, where are these few people you know. you said Caribbean IMGs. IMGs come from all over the world. The difficulty in matching is different for a ROSS/SGU grad compared to a random IMG who graduated medical school years ago.
Dr Webb himself has recommened what carib med schools to consider. Ross and SGU publishes list, they also have match day videos. Real people match into surgery from those schools and they so not have 250s.
Just because you weren't able to achieve something doesnt mean others cant. Everyones circumstance is different
