    Howls moving castle has always been my favorite studio ghibli movie so I def had to give the book a try, and I was not disappointed. The book, imo, was even BETTER than the movie and to this day its still my favorite book ever! I still love the movie. You can tell that it's made by a Japanese staff because the characters are more calm and humble compared to the book. Howl in the movie is charming and just mysterious, but in the book he's an eccentric, very VERY overly dramatic, emotional, and boy is he just the funniest character I have ever come across from. I was surprised to see how different the plot was from the movie but that's what made reading the book even better, because aside from the beginning, the plot was completely new to me and I didn't feel like I was reading a story I already knew the ending to, it was a whole new experinece. A favorite quote is where Howl tells Sophie "Is that all you can do in the face of tragedy? Make toast!" lool

      I feel like this is one of the most rewarding instances of watching the movie first and following up with the book. They're both lovely in their own right but fundamentally SUCH different stories. Whiney Howl is one of my absolute FAVORITE characters in literature! He really appeals to my inner drama queen lol

    Sophie in the book was more interesting because we got to see her progress from someone who was afraid to express her own mind and instead allows herself to be influenced by others, to someone who knows her own mind and thinks for herself. Book Howl, too, is more complex and interesting because of his curse to always find love that will betray him. He hides behind clothes and beauty treatments to get someone to love him then fears betrayal when the girl loves him back so he betrays that love first. At the end of the book, he changes from someone who hides from commitment to someone who is willing to sacrifice for the good of others. When Sophie is willing to give him up even though she loves him, he realizes that this is one woman who will not betray him. Sophie’s relationship with her sisters and stepmother is more complex and interesting in the book as well. She learns to see them as they are, not who others say they are and finds they all love and care about her, even though they aren’t perfect. She is able to give them love in return. The movie trivializes the importance of these relationships to Sophie’s growth. I like the book and the movie, but the movie misses the point of the book completely. I really found the transformation from a young woman into an old one absolutely fascinating. The villain of the book wants to be forever young and the protagonist wanted to be old. Jones used an ingenious plot twist there, why would a young person want to be old?

  • @chocobere
    @chocobere 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

    In the book I love that Sophie's world has these weird superstitious beliefs like "eldest children never amount to anything much", which Sophie believes and is resigned to, until the spell happens and she is now not only the eldest but elderly!
    I like how the book shows the characters fighting against life's expectations for them, Sophie of course when she is old and feels more empowered, but also both her sisters Lettie and Martha scheming and identity-swapping to live their best life. :) Every main character gets a transformation.

    I think Sophie has magic in the movie too, but it wasn't as in the face with it as in the book.
    It shows most with her ability to manage/talk up Calucifer and at the very end when she gave the heart back to howl and also wished for both of them to live.

  • @HellsOperative
    @HellsOperative ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My take on howles singular movie meltdown was more or less "the straw that broke the camels back". My reasoning is because of just how stressed he seems given his and the world's situation of chaos and war. With howl in the middle of all of it. Stopping entire bomb brigades, being stalked by, and constantly afraid of sulamin, his heart has belonged to a fire demon since childhood, and he takes all the hardship with a smile on his face. He doesn't even indulge in his on goings during his trips out. He comes in from one said trip, takes a bath and dyes his hair only to find its now red. The horrible things he endured all come playing in his mind and has an out of character moment as we all can be known to do during times of high stress. I think his one and only bratty moment in the film adaptation was to emphasize just HOW much pressure he was under.

    Most Dianna Wynne Jones books have a multi-dimensional/magical many-worlds setup. I read a lot of her books when I was young and Howl being from Wales registered as "oh, THERE'S the multiverse" to me when I read it 😆

    I loved the book and movie both! The one thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned in this video though, is that in the movie, Wizard Sullivan is DEFINITELY also Mrs. Pentstemmon! She was Howl's teacher, looks exactly the way Pentstemmon is described in the book, and has a similar conversation with Sophie about being concerned for Howl. With so many characters in the story, I thought it was cool how they combined those two.
    The one thing I wasn't so hot on, was how out of nowhere the romance was between Sophie and Howl in the book. I'd like to see them START to develop feelings toward the end of the book, and begin to explore that in the sequels, rather than jumping to "happily every after," as Howl says on the last page. That being said, I've seen that jump to romance in a few books, and maybe the slow courtship is just my own modern preference haha

    • @luvmeday
      @luvmeday ปีที่แล้ว +2

      agreed, i'm not a fan of the very common happy romantic ending with so little build up. but i see it as a sort of confirmation that the author intends them to be together even if the book is ending so that theres no unanswered questions. so it often feels rushed but as long as it seems like the eventual direction the story would have headed anyway it's forgivable to me. i would enjoy more platonic endings tho ;)

    Such a good recap! I love your thoughts!
    One thing you might have forgotten about the book is that Howl was hired by the king to find a way to move his armies quickly, and Howl kept trying to slither out of the responsibility because he didn’t want anything to do with the looming war. He ended up making Seven League Boots as a result, and that’s what got him nearly appointed as royal wizard.
    Though he wasn’t the peace-loving nobleman of the anime, he did want to avoid the war (more out of avoidance), and there definitely was a war subtext to most of the book (though nowhere near what we see in the movie).
    I wish Sophie’s sisters had gotten some justice in the movie!

Yeah, they are extreeeemely different 😂 they changed so much about the characters and plot, that the movie ends up seeming more inspired by than based off of the book. For that same reason I'm definitely going to have to look into those 🥰

  • @keturahspencer
    @keturahspencer ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I love both versions, but I like the book better. I do wish the plot had stayed closer to the book. I felt the plot in the movie was a statement on war, and the plot in the book was moreso a out Howl and Calcifer trying to break their contract before they turned. I also thought that the witch of the waste's fire demon was an amazing character that would have been a welcome addition to the movie. Concerning Howl coming from Wales, that makes him more magical in my opinion. How did someone from our world find or make a portal to another world? Why are we robbed of seeing Sophie freak out in a car?

    • @WhatsBliss
      @WhatsBliss 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I always loved that Howl comes from Wales because, for me, it's the whole "why" for his behaviour and attitude. He feels like an imposter and a charlatan and is deeply insecure about his outsider status in Ingary-because he's really a shabby academic nobody from a tiny country of no significance (from his perspective). Part of him is jealous of Sophie being innately magical and from a magical land and it annoys him that she thinks so little of herself.

    I think the bird thing is to visually show that fighting causes him to lose a little bit of his humanity and become more beastial. And I think it shows that Howl is a demon in the movie; not just that Calcifer is a demon. I've always assumed that movie Howl was a witch AND a demon.

    I don't feel that the bird transformation has anything to do specifically with Calcifur. It seems to represent how he turns himself into a monster to protect Sophie and other people. Just like how the other wizards turned themselves into monsters to fight for the kings. The only reason he doesn't completely transform seems to be because of Sophie and her help.

I found that the movie, though also confusing at times, was much more accessible and I could at least make my own sense of it. Honestly, Howl's Moving Castle used to be one of my fav Ghibli when I was young but now that I rewatched it, I found that there were a lot of plot holes and messy story lines, making the movie a bit "indigestible" imo. I agree that the movie's "hair dye" scene was a bit "tone deaf" and out of character for movie-Howl. I think that Miyazaki tried to stick with some of the OG story lines a bit too much, which is a shame, because he's really great at creating something new from a pre-established story (Kiki's Delivery Service being a great exemple of that talent)

  • @alexht.9382
    @alexht.9382 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    The film is actually Hayao Miyazaki's despair and crushed dreams.
    Howl's backstory in the film.
    1. Nona (Howl)'s grandfather gets assassinated by the apple county because he tried to convert the magic by words. (He tried to publish the book)
    Nona holds grudge against the enemy county because of this.
    2. Suliman took Nona under her wing and trained him.
    3. Nona met The lost star, while they were sealing the contract, Sophie from the different time came in, and got involved in the contract, gained the magic of word, she named two, Howl, and Calucifer. And cursed their fates tied with her. unknowingly.
    (But she couldn't seal the contract with a kiss then)
    4. With the new gained power, Howl escaped Saliman, battled her and injured her legs.
    5. Howl flirted with the witch of waste, lived with her for a while, invested a newborn star and sets it free, and then eventually left the witch.
    6. Time has passed, and Howl found Sophie at last, and this is where the film begins.
    Btw, when Howl found Sophie, he forgot about the woman who interpreted the contract and he didn't know that Sophie was his destiny, And if you look at that scene closely, his ring was shining red.
    (This is why Hayao Miyazaki is the true romantist imo)
    Also the ending scene shows us a few decades later where Sophie literally trapped everyone she liked in the castle, and there's a new massive war going on down below because the scarecrow came back to the moving castle.
    The witch of waste was forced to stay watching Howl and Sophie for a thousand years.
    everything was the way Sophie wanted to be.
    It's not a happy ending for everyone, it was only a happy ending for the Wicked Sophie.
    For everyone else, not so much.
    But Hahyao Miyazaki made it hard to see the actual storyline. Because he was told to make this film for children and young women.
    It's an old man's tragedy disguised as young girl's romance story.

    Oh my gosh-- I loved your video! I recently re-read Howl's Moving Castle and was so tickled by the scenes of Sophie in Howl's world-- I had forgotten that he's actually from our world! That was a fun re-discovery. I really love both versions so much-- differences and all. The way Studio Ghibli imagined all the scenes visually looks so magical. We are truly truly blessed that we got a movie of this story :)

    hii before telling you my opinion of the two versions. I'd love to comment on your attitude which is soo loveable.
    so
    I watched the movie years ago and I found it confusing. It was aesthetically beautiful but the story didn't honestly appeal to me. But then I discovered there was a novel so I read it and things made much more sense.
    what I didn't like much in the movie was making the witch of the waste a sort of their friend which quite happened suddenly. but other than that I don't find the other changes annoying: the charming walk in the air is a masterpiece for real.
    I watched the movie again after reading the book and I like it more now.
    it's funny how the movie made me love the book as I imagined everything like the movie using it as a mould.
    and also the book made me love the movie more as the missing pieces are no longer missing.

    Listening to you compare how movie Howl was more charming (being so nobel and gentleman n everything) compared to the Howl in the book, I noticed how interestingly my mind is wired, since I actually started liking Howl's character only after reading the book (I saw the movie first)... at first I hated Howl in the book even more than the movie one, but slowly I began to realize that I'm warming up to him as it kept becoming more clear that he is so human, not perfect, not as distant, and is actually a tsundere. His ~perfect young man~ character in the movie was so not relatable that I couldn't really like him

    Can I ask how is the romance between Howl and Sophie in the book? It weired me out me how in the movie Sophie fell in love without knowing that much of him and how Howl never says he has the same feelings, is that different in the original source? :)

    • @lexieslibrary
      @lexieslibrary  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The romance is completely different in the book, but I wouldn't say it's necessarily overtly sweet and romantic lol. They bicker A LOT, but in a pretty funny way. The romantic feelings are more between the lines until the very end.

    19:55 that scene where they run in the sky does happen in the book, it's when they run away from the waste.
    9:13 they kept describing howl as cowardly and bad mannered in the book, but in the end sophie reveals that, the entire time he has actually been very noble and kind.
    They didn't change his character that much. He comes across rude when he insults her by calling her old, but that's recontextualised when you find out he knows that's not actually what she looks like.
    He's also not a coward, he just believes himself to be because he has fear. In the same way Sophie thinks she is an old soul just because she is the eldest. At the end of the day he fights his own battles, and she is a young woman.
    In the book and the movie, his issue is his detachment to things. In the book he doesn't reveal too much in effort to keep a distance, in the movie it's the same with the additional idea that he throws himself into other people's battles due to poor self worth.

I went to rewatch the movie and couldn't believe the changes they made especially because there really was no need to. You already had a great story. They removed the fight between the witch, why? And the ending of the money was lazy as hell. Ugh, just read the book.

    i think the whole bird thing is abot ptsd and other veteran issues, maybe a lost idea, that Howl WAS a soldier and that new war brings up the worst depths of his soul.
    also i think for this part we should „blame” all the pacification of Japan after ww2, that provides sometimes a bit confusing narratives of indistinction of defending and attacking :/

    Unpopular opinion time: the book suffers from the "love through dislike" trope. Sophie's only ever shown to berate and scoff at Howl, she never thanks him for the things he does for her or shows honest kindness towards him. I dunno, maybe I'm too autistic to see the nuances, but to me, it just looks like Sophie goes from being suspicious of him, to being possessively jealous, to dating him in the end after having done ONE big, good deed for him. Dating-wise, this is a red flag. Howl might be a dramatic brat, but that doesn't give Sophie the right to constantly put him down and destroy his things. Also worth noting is, that cutting up a partner's clothes is a legitimate abuse-technique, and after that part in the book, I just had a bad taste in my mouth about Sophie.

But the book ruined the movie for me-it's SO much more in line with what I like, and Howl is so much more fun in the book that I can't see him any other way. My dramatic ass boyfriend and his magic tantrum over his hair turning pink LMAO
    The fact her sisters are kind of important in the book also means a lot to me, it also gives more layers to Sophie… who is a lot more dynamic and like. Her own person in the book, to me

    I love miyazaki's work, but unfortunately I couldn't really get into the movie. I read Howl's moving Castle when I was a kid and immediately began devouring her works. So much of what I loved about that story it was, well pretty much every exact detail of the world building, the complexity of the characters, the images it put into my mind. And that was mostly gone in the movie. Of course I know it's a good movie, it's just nothing like the book. Honestly though, as somebody who's a huge fan of Philip Pullman's work, I would have much rather see a book become a good movie albeit a very different story, then see it become an embarrassment.
