Ah, the beautiful Studio Ghibli "Howl's Moving Castle." So full of beauty, friendship, magic and hope! Did you know it is based off of a book? Yep! Diana Wynn Jones' "Howl's Moving Castle" book! A lot has changed from book to movie, and we're going to look at a lot of little details that change everything! Of course, both the Miyazaki film Howl's and the book have completely different themes, and both feature a host of memorable lovable (ah, for the most part!) characters. Let's see just where the Witch of the Waste, Calcifer, Wizard Howl Pendragon, Howell Jenkins (who!?), Sophie Hatter, Lettie Hatter, Martha Hatter, Mrs. Pentstemmon, Wizard AND Witch Suliman, Turniphead, Markl (I mean... Micheal?) and so many more characters got there start! You will probably be unsurprised to know that Book Howl is a HUGE heartbreaker of a lady's man, and is generally kind of a lazy creep? Or at least that's what the book's narrator leads us to believe. Also, Sophie Hatter is a powerful witch? And Sophie has two sisters?! Who is Lily Angorian? Yeah, this animation has some Howls Moving Castle theories too. So! Join me as we look into Howl's Moving Castle's creepy origins!

Yes, in the movie he's quick to defend them, insisting, they're not so bad, if you get to know them. It always felt wrong until I realized he was just making excuses for his own bad behavior.

Sophie is quite a dick in the book aswell. She lies to everybody even when not needed, she sells fake magical powder to a boy who was desperate, she constantly spies on other, she gets jealous and throws the biggest tantrum and she readily kicks out a crying wokan out of her house (granted she was the fire demon in disguise, but sophie didn't know that yet).
Y'all rememer Sophie saying "Find Me In The Future!" when she went into Howl's memories? Ya. So that is how Howl found Sophie in the beginning. He was looking for Sophie EVER SINCE Sophie said "Find Me In The Future!" when Howl was just very young.
So they really are meant to be at the end!

But Diana was content with and liked his film. It had its own beauty and lead some people to her book and other work. She remains hugely popular in Japan. In fact her book ‘Earwig and the Witch’ - for younger viewers has been made by Studio Gibhli and recently aired. Read her. She was a wonderful author
My favorite difference is that anime Howl is princely guy while book Howl is a comedic narcissistic little coward and also he and book Sophie are a comedic duo through the whole book. Also, book Sophie is such a badass! She roasts Howl on every ocassion

Even though Howl was the "cat caller" in the book, one of my favourite parts was, after he got his heart back, he said to Sophie "I've been wondering all along if you would turn out to be that lovely girl I met on May Day." I feel like it shows that despite his running around after girls, he genuinely liked Sophie and was unable to forget her.
Sophie's sisters both speculate that Howl's apparent interest in them was an attempt to make Sophie jealous. I think Lettie even admits that every time he showed up to "woo" her, he spent the whole time asking questions about Sophie.
I love that line. In the book, Howl did say he was afraid that he couldn't properly love someone; and is it possible because he is literally heartless? But then Sophie came, and my impression is that Howl actually saw through Sophie's enchantment. As in, he can see her for who she really is (perhaps his vision will be double at times with the old Sophie overlapping with the girl Sophie?). Anyway, IMO the first time Howl 'courted' Lettie there it could be that he was already planning some ways to shake off Sophie's enchantment...
@@cephasthamerlin2199 it wasn't both sisters, it was just Lettie. And Lettie said in the book that he only started asking her about Sophie during that day that Sophie decided to go see her in Upper Folding. That was when she got worried for Sophie and bawled her eyes out afterwards.
@@Icha74 I don't think he necessarily "saw through" he enchantment, but i think he could tell that there was a spell on her from the start. Maybe as he gradually tried to remove it, the spell weakened and sometimes he could see the young Sophie for a few. Just like the how the man "Percival" could reveal himself for a few mins sometimes before turning back into a dog. And then after he realised that it was her, he started asking Lettie about her and his teacher for help to remove the spell.
@@crystal110698 Your theory can be true... I was just thinking though, he saw through her spell because he said something like "have I seen you before?" or "have we met before?". Thus I think he actually saw her (blurry perhaps) real appearance from the start, albeit overlapping with Sophie's older image.

@@TheMatsushitaMan Cuz Sophie travels back in time and yells back at Howl and Calcifer "find me in the future!" so when Howl and Sophie meet for the first time and he pops up out of nowhere saying "sorry I'm late, I was looking everywhere for you" it literally means that he remembered Sophie from the past asking to look for her and that's what he did ("Merry Go Round of Life" is also in relation to time travel)

It seems like he was just making something up so he can save Sophie from the men, but the quote holds different meaning when you find out they’ve actually met each other before. Or at least that’s the way I see it.

Good question!
His natural accent isn't Welsh. He was born there but raised near London, so he has a Cockney accent that wouldn't have worked at all. Besides, they dropped the whole Howl being from Wales story in the movie.
It’s actually one of the greatest annoyances of being welsh, so under represented.

One thing that I’ve always thought about when reading Diana Wynne Jones books is that she was a firm believer that books don’t need to have a deeper meaning or lesson - she told stories of characters tumbling through remarkable events, but there was no need to have a unified theme or thematic resolution. It was more or less ‘let’s see what happens when we put these characters through these situations, and see what they do and how they grow’ in an organic way.
I finished reading Deep Secret the other day, and I'd have to agree. It was wild from start to finish!
I've thought it was psychological journeys - the things which we often don't see about ourselves but have to realize in order to become more healthy and happy.
The great thing about stories is that no matter what, there will always be some underlying meaning, even if the author didn't write with it in mind.

It's hard to understand in the movie, but reading the book you get the idea she takes it like an opportunity of scaping the boring life she was destined to live as the older sister taking care of the hat shop. She also believed she was bring exploited and her stepmother didn't really like her (which turns out false). It doesn't bother her until she is recalled by Calcifel that she lost several years of her life.

My husband and I swear a lot, so we think it is only natural that they are going to pick up on them. We taught the boys that they are “pirate words” so they need to stay on the ship, so they shouldn’t say them but they aren’t going to get in trouble for it. The words they do get in trouble for are along the lines of stupid, and they are lucky enough that they haven’t been exposed to more derogatory words that are offensive towards race or gender, but if they do say those they will get in trouble.

Well, time to get the name changing papers ready lol
One of my favorite scenes in the movie was actually even funnier in the book. When Howl throws his tantrum, not only is there those creepy shadows and the oozing of slime, but Howl screams so loudly the entire town has to evacuate to the docks until he's done! That's kind of how Miazaki handled the characters. You can see their original personalities a bit, but they've been toned down. Howl is stil vain and tries to run from anything he doesn't want to deal with, but he's watered down and given a good reason to run. Sophie is still bossy and nosey, but not nearly as much as in the books where she's constantly trying to bully everyone -- including Howl -- into giving her her way. I love the movie. It's my favorite Ghibli film. The changes Miazaki made fit well into the story he wanted to tell, but I will always love the book more for it's over the top, flawed, and endearing characters
I agree 100%! I also love how Howl actually went around with pink hair after that Sophie messed up his beauty spells 😆
The shampoo scene in the book is absolutely terrifying, in my opinion.There's an entire page dedicated to explain how dark and mounstruous Howl and the entire room become.

Maybe because I saw the movie first and knew it was just a tantrum, I thought it was hilarious. It brought to mind the doom and gloom of children I've known who threw similarly petty tantrums.

For me, the fact it looks like a childish tanthrum is exactly what the problem is. It doesn't remind me of children, it reminds me of tyrannical and narcissistic people that don't care about the consequences of their actions and become dangerous over nothings.
I think we can agree that the author wrote this scene well, as we both saw both side of a same behavior !

Like I said before, movie Howl is an extremely watered down version of book Howl. I agree, book Howl is a narcissistic man-child with little thought to others or the consequences of his actions. If I met him in real life, I would hate him, and in a more serious book, he would be extremely dangerous, as any self centered child with incredible powers would be. As it is, the book is pretty light hearted in tone, so I find him an entertaining reflection of the spoiled brats I've known. He's almost satirical to me.
My favorite part of the book is that nothing makes sense at all until the end and then you're lik OMG WHAT THE FRICKITTY FRACK IT ALL MAKES SENSE

Theres one more thing: Michael in the book once told Sophie that he'll believe that Howl's truly in love when he goes out to meet someone without spending hours in the bathroom. So when Sophie got caught by the fire demon, Howl rushed to save her without even prepping himself and the rest is history ✨✨✨✨

@@Alizudo Actually it IS true. That's deeply tragic, i know, but most of us do our best when the circumstances are the worst. Of course this also stresses us out to the point of burn-out and may cause ptsd as well.
We should neither have too good circumstances or too bad ones, since we don't want to become lazy, unmotivated and comfortable, but we don't want to become destroyed by stress, illness and hard emotions either.

Why author did that. It's bad....now it's like howl is an unmotivated teenager who live s in his sister's garage and fantasies about being a powerful witch with status, something he lacks in his real world .....I see now why miyazaki didn't follow the book.

Yup. That really took me back, finding out that Howl is just a normal, plain dude from modern Wales, trying to be someone he's not in another dimension and another time. And how Sophie saw through all that and still loved him for who he was, despite all that.
I haven't read the books yet, but I've heard that Book!Sophie is a badass that isn't afraid to put Howl in his place and that they bicker like an old married couple a lot, which honestly just makes me wanna read them more
She tries to put everyone in their place. It's her modus operandi, and being an old woman helps her to find the confidence for that. Even when she knows nothing about the situation (which is most of the times, I think).

Although Diana Wynn Jones obviously wrote the novels, my favorite take about Howl's Moving Castle book vs movie is that "the movie is how Howl tells the story" and "the book is how Sophie remembers it" lol

It just amuses me so much that while in the movie, Howl and Sophie just chat really chill and in the book they are all about roasting each other in every little conversation they get khkfjg
Book Sophie is more OP magic-wise but also super stubborn and petty, and Howl is essentially a narcissistic coward who cares way too much about his appearance and they make a PERFECT pair because Howl is the only one who can break through Sophie’s stubborn moods and Sophie is the only one who can take Howl down a notch and force him to deal with his responsibilities 😂 The movie doesn’t give either of them enough character flaws so their romance seems more like “oh and they were suddenly in love despite only spending like 3 days together max” but I understand they just didn’t have enough time to flesh everything out and it’s still a really beautiful story albeit completely different! Also book Sophie is described as being very beautiful and if she weren’t compared with her even more beautiful younger sister she’d be considered even more beautiful, but she SEES herself as boring and dull and plain despite NOT ACTUALLY BEING any of those things :( Howl kind of snaps her out of that mindset but really the book is about her own development and how self esteem really can effect how strong you are - cuz even if you’re hella strong and beautiful like Sophie, if you don’t believe it yourself you can’t fill your potential. And howl has the opposite problem where he sees himself as so beautiful so, like I said before, they make a good match lol. Also Howl is super annoying in the book at times and I live for Sophie telling him off.
Agreed with all of this and love the analysis, except in movie remember at end when she finds him in that moment young howl met calcifer, then she says 'see you in the future!' and he hears her just before it all collapses? that memory of seeing someone in love with him making a promise or being there for him or however you wanna interpret it stuck with him so he was looking for her technically all his life growing up, even if it was subconscious it was kind of a loop when he met her in the future, which is the past of the one who spoke to him in his past, hence Merry Go Round of Life if that makes sense
@@skycaesar2016 yes I thought that was a clever way of adding a lot of depth to their relationship in such a short time :) and also the time travel thing is also how she finds out about calcifer, both of those things otherwise would've needed a lot more time dedicated to them so it was a great idea to have it taken care of that way. I think if any other movie director had done it, it would've seen lazy and out of place but it still fit in so naturally to the story! but yeah, even so they really didn't know each other all that long, but their relationship still feels pretty natural in the movie.
Diana Wynne Jones (the author) is a VERY good writer. I most certainly recommend her books

Whenever I feel the world is getting too harsh, too unbearable.. when I feel awful and depressed.. I’ll watch this movie and the beauty and grace of the animation gives me a nostalgic feeling for a place I’ve never been and people I don’t know.

Watching this movie feels like going home. It makes me feel secure and at peace- like everything is going to be alright. I've started watching my favorite scenes from it whenever I have a panic attack and it calms me down when nothing else will. I like the flower garden scene and the ending scene. :)

I think the funniest/ weirdest part of the novel was the fact that howl designs video games for his niece and nephew.
Overall I adore both the book and the movie too. I just wish we can get a more accurate adaptation bc there are a lot parts in the novel I’d like to see acted out/ animated

i watched the movie twice before reading the book but after i read it i just couldn’t love the movie as much as the book, they’re both amazing in different ways but the way that the book’s story is told is just so mesmerizing

I think that was on purpose. Miyazaki takes a story and portrays it in his own way as to not be a full adaptation but a twist. Which also kinda helps push people to read the books if they've only seen the movie.
They're not even the same characters tbh. I don't mind that though. I enjoy both the book and movie as their own separate stories and worlds. The book characters are deeply flawed but endearing and entertaining, and the movie characters are relatable and likeable in a different sense. Both are dear to me.
I actually loved that the catcaller soldier was Howl himself in the original. Him saying that he had hoped the old woman would turn out to be the lovely lady he had hit on on Mayday was so cute and him wanting to know why she was so scared after breaking all these girls' hearts lmaoo...
They really should've went with the book villain, finding out more about the Witch of the Waste and that her fire demon was a whole person was sooo exciting! And I really liked Lettie and Martha as well, I really wish Ghibli did more with that or did several parts to adapt faithfully. I enjoyed every single second of the book it was so well-written and I loved Howl and I also really loved Sophie. And Calcifer had all these colors that I wish I'd have seen in the movie.
I love Ghibli and I do love the movie, but I always had the feeling the movie felt kind of all over the place and incomplete before I read the book and I'm so glad more people are getting into it and into reading it more now. The whole Ingary trilogy is so interesting and nice.

But it's just based on the book it wasn't supposed to be a full fair adaptation.
@@hao9508 Yup. At least most of his movies I believe are his own twists on stories which he uses to encourage watchers to read the books as well to compare them. There were some pretty big differences between the book The Borrowers or whatever and the movie Ariety but both are great pieces of work. Also it's a 2 hour movie so it's harder to cram character growth, establishment, and purpose, than it is in a book.

Howl only went after Lettie to get info on Sophie and was never interested in Martha (who Michael loves) he says himself that he had never been to the bakery and so he never saw Or met Martha until Michael brought her to the castle and by that point Howl was in love with Sofie.
Lettie and Martha switched places so Lettie could study magic and Martha could meet someone and fall in love. Michael didn’t know Martha’s name because of this and thought she was Lettie. The real Lettie used her real name and so there were two “Letties.” But Howl never loved either one. We are told by Persevel that Howl went after Lettie to learn more about Sophie and that Lettie encouraged Howl to find out what had happened to her

I like your comment about the possibility that Sophie's remark to the mirror, "Like an old maid," is self-fullfilling prophecy. She feels trapped in her role as first born, like her life is over before it's begun, and the Witch of the Waste's curse simply adds the exterior visual to what she's feeling inside. It takes Sophie actually being old to get her to take control of her future. And it's telling that the spell comes off when she realizes she was the one holding onto that image of herself.
in the book the witch does actually turn her old. calcifer specifically says that the witch reduced her lifespan by about 60 years. calcifer also mentions in the beginning that there are two layers of spells put on her. the second layer was actually unintentionally one she put on herself while looking at her aged appearance in the mirror. so initially she is actually dealing with the witch's spell having aged her, but howl later in the book says that he's been working on removing the spell. this has removed the problems with old age (i.e. achy joints, heart problems, so on and so forth) but her appearance stays that of an old woman. this is because the spell she put on herself while looking in the mirror at her old self "don't worry old thing. you look quite healthy. besides, this is much more like you really are." so she unknowingly added that extra spell layer on herself making her look as she really is (in her own opinion). same way she put spells on the hats she was making. the spell she put on herself is also why later in the book howl says "i came to the conclusion that you liked being in disguise." and "you must be, since you're doing it yourself"
also worth mentioning that the hat scene comes before the witch puts a spell on her, but she isn't old in appearance until after the witch does so. especially shown when "gaston" looks horrified when the witch casts the spell on her. also the spell she put on herself doesn't break because of a change in how she feels, it was because she fulfilled the bargain she made with calcifer. the spell was lifted when she freed calcifer and howl from their contract just as she said she would. in return calcifer broke the spell on her, just as he said he would. this is why she returns to her normal appearance only after fulfilling her end of the bargain (in the book). unlike the movie, there were no scenes of sophie looking young again until the spell is broken at the end.

I can say, without spoiling anything, that the story uses a lot of 'Arabian Nights' folklore, with a genie, djinns and a flying carpet, and the main hero is a young carpet-seller who falls in love with a princess. And lots of people and things are enchanted and aren't what they seem.

I don’t know. Howl’s moving castle is weird lol but that’s why I like it. I’ve always preferred fantastical movies, but I have friends who only like romantic slice of life or down to earth kind of movies. It’s not that they don’t have tastes just that the tastes are different
book sophie never did escape her fairy tale trope destiny tho, it just turns out she was the eldest of three witches instead and every one knows that means shes the most powerful one. and this fits with the two other sisters too, martha the youngest only learns enough magic to change places with lettie, lettie actually wants to be a witch but her magic doesn't come effortlessly like it does to sophie, but she ends up apprenticed to sullivan, a powerful wizard, in the end. And sophie herself already have her own brand of very powerful magic and has been using it unconsciously the entire book.
this goes with their marriages too: martha marries michael an apprentice, lettie ends up with sullivan, and sophie marries howl: arguably the most powerful wizard in all of ignary

I always interpreted the witch of the waste as being very beautiful but an awful person, not augmenting herself with magic, when howl said “she was once very beautiful, then, she wasn’t” as when he finally looked beyond her appearance or when the demon overtook her

I read Howl's Moving Castle before the movie was announced (as well as other Diana Wyne Jones novels.) I was excited to see the movie but was kind of let down that it was so different. This year I decided to reread the book and watch the movie again, and now I love both. I respect that they are both different and DWJ gave it her blessing. Now another DWJ story, Earwig and the Witch, is becoming a Ghibli film, and I promised myself I won't judge it as harshly as I did Howl's Moving Castle.
I enjoy both stories, but I look at them separately; so many things are changed that I feel it's kind of unfair to compare them. Both versions have great aspects to them (although overall I do prefer the book because Howl and Sophie are so much more flawed).
For me it's similar to the movie Blade Runner: the films are inspired by the books, but they take their own spins with the material/ideas and characters to make something that better suits the medium.
I love both versions of HMC and Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream... But I don't think of them as being the same thing. You can see that in both cars those making the films loved the books and wanted to do them justice. I don't think you could do HMC as a film and include everything, it would have to be a full series to fit it all in properly.
One of my favorite books!!! I’ve read it multiple times, and my favorite moral is to never let others dictate how you feel or live your life. Sophie’s stepmother wasn’t a typical one, but she was still jealous and manipulated our protagonist. Howl lectures Sophie about the overall moral during that flying scene. Sophie realizes that the people she loves truly care about her, and the only one keeping her back is herself.

Ah, but you neglected to mention that his home in Wales was in “our world” in like...the 80’s, with cars and computers and video games. So...a teeny bit of time travel? Or dimension travel?
Definitely dimension travel, imo - if you've read Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci series, there's similar cross-dimensional travel there, too (our world as it is, our modern world plus magic, Victorian-era world with magic, all co-existing) and I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that the Ingary trilogy takes place in the same multiverse as the Chrestomanci books.
The book was written in the mid 80's, so no time travel as it was contemporary with our world :-)

One thing I feel the need to say is, while yes, Howl is indubitably narcissistic and a jerk to women and whatnot, he also has a very gentle and good-natured side to him that you neglected to mention. Remember, he didn't make the contract with Calcifer for his own profit, he offerd his heart to the demon as a selfless act, because he felt sorry for him and didn't want him to die. He also does everything he can to protect his family (who btw treat him like crap), even at the cost of having them all looking down on him and seeing him as a screwup, because telling (showing) them he is actually a really powerful wizard could put them all in danger. Also, he found Michael sleeping at his porch one day and just took him in no questions asked, eventually even making him his apprentice. What I'm saying is, Howl is not as bad as he seems!

It's been a minute since I read the book but I enjoyed the reasons the sisters switch spots (Martha/Lettie) There is an order to things when having multiple kids. The eldest gets the business the second seeks her own fortune and the youngest gets to learn magic (I think that was the order anyway). But the 2 sisters wanted to switch since they liked each other's "Life path" if you will. Which is why they are pretending to be each other.
Low key though I dislike book Howl lol he isn't good for much in my opinion.
I missed the movie having both sisters & their having bigger roles in the story too plus teenaged Michael being changed to young child Markl was a bit strange. Markl was still cute but I'm guessing Studio Ghibli did that both to make things simpler in writing the character & to put in an audience surrogate for any younger viewers of the movie. But it still would've been cute to have teen Michael's romance with Martha if it were possible to keep it in.

Eldest is expected to stay put, Middle child is doomed to mediocrity and youngest is expected to go out and seek their fortune; thus Sophie gets the hat shop, Middle child Lettie is sent to be a baker's apprentice where she'd at least meet a nice man and get married, and youngest child Martha is sent to be a witch's apprentice so that when she does the fortune-seeking she'd have magic. But Martha wants to get married and have 10 children, and Lettie wants to learn magic

I love the movie, but the book is my favorite because Sophie is way more sassy. My favorite part is where she accidentally makes weed killer because she is so steaming mad at Howl.

I think you have failed to mention that Howl really visited Lettie because he wanted to know more about Sophie (or something like that) and that, without her knowing it, he was trying to end her spell.
And there are two things that I didn't like at all about the movie and the book:
1) Some behaviors from Sophie and Howl got on my nerves!
2) lack of detail in characters' thoughts, feelings, and reactions, but I guess this is because it is narrated in the third person uwu

Concerning the Ghibli adaptation, I always felt Howl was very under-developed as a character, and the romance between him and Sophie felt half-baked. He's offscreen for most of the movie and most of their moments together are Howl saving Sophie from dangerous situations, or her being domestic towards him. I know it's a fairy tale, but given the romance between them is a big part of the movie, I felt it could have had more focus and development.
Same reason I didn't much care for Ashitaka and San. They get very little screentime together and the love between them is more TOLD than it is SHOWN. Ashitaka says he's in love with San when he barely knows her, and we're TOLD San loves him but it's not really SHOWN...Outside of her feeding him and that's pretty much it. I know there's more to the movie than romance, but it's supposedly a big deal between Ashitaka and San.

@@cl0very That is possible, I've only seen the movie and not read the book, but I could never really like Howl all that much, given how flighty, aloof, and non-present he is for much of the movie. If Howl had more screentime and more time was devoted to his character development onscreen I would have liked him more.
I also felt Sophie's falling for him was quite spontaneous as well, I know we get some touching moments between them, but they spend large chunks of the movie apart and it makes it hard for me to buy they've fallen in love given their limited interactions. That said I buy their romance more than I do Ashitaka and San's.

Sophie is heavily hinted at having some strong magic in her in the movie too, although, as I haven’t read the book, I assume it’s much more subtle in comparison.

I love the movie but to me the book is superior in a few things:
First of all: Sophie .She is incredibly badass and funny through the whole book, her and Howl's interactions are hilarious and their dynamic is different from the movie but still really charming and unique.
Another thing that I loved is that Book Howl not only is waaay more chaotic than Movie Howl, but he gets a really amazing character development and Marco (although I love his little boy version from the movie) is also more enjoyable as a grown teenager.
I just feel like the book version ties everything together neatly and the characters end up feeling more fresh and natural.Oh btw to those interested, there is that one scene where Howl's sister starts roasting him when he and Sophie go to her house and its AMAZING
The series is a trilogy and I recommend all of them, even tgough Howl and Sophie aren't the protagonist in the last 2 books, they play vital roles to the story!

My favourite difference between movie and book: in the movie, Howl saves Sophie from the creeps who are hitting on her... In the book, he is the creep🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 (of course he had not bad intentions, but Sophie was already nervous and so she is a bit scared by him)

Miyazaki can't or don't want make a movie without some of his favorite themes like flight, environmentalism, pacifism.
I like both the movie and the book, but I'm a little sad that the book version of the story is less know and less talked about. I mean try to look for fan art, there are very few of the book version.
Yes, the movie looks nice, but I hated how it takes the book story, cuts it and shove the parts into the standard ghibli movie mold with standard ghibli heroine no.3.
I just really disliked the war story. I disliked it when I saw the movie in theaters in 2004, before I ever read the book, and after reading the book I disliked it even less. I love war movies, but in this story it just felt shoved in for absolutely no reason. The rest of the movie is enjoyable, though, for being its own version of the book. I suppose it wasn't action-packed enough for what the studio wanted.
I never knew Howl's moving castle was a book. I learned something today, so thanks.

i read the book a few months ago after being familiar with the movie, and i gotta say i enjoyed the book more. i like to view them as two separate stories bc of how different the plots are. what drew me to the book is how sophie and howl's relationship is much more based on caring for each other and 'tough love' as opposed to the kind of fairytale attraction they have in the movie.
One of the best scenes in the book is when Howl comes home from the rugby club reunion drunk and stumbles around trying to find the stairs and his bed (which is dodging), while insisting that he is cone sold stober.
imagine being an author and getting anime adaptation by Hayao Miyazaki of your book
I felt sad that the movie left out a lot of the stuff from the book but I think that they way Diana Wynne Jones writes is just not translatable to film. Her writing is sooo clever and you will get major plot reveals in between silly dialogue or a character rambling on in their head (like when Sophie realizes she's a witch). This also results in a lot of stuff that is said casually coming back and meaning a lot more later on.
Also I believe miyazaki said he wanted to focus the movie on more anti-war themes which also probably contributed to more stuff being cut out.
I love the sequels even more, especially castle in the sky, the way it all makes perfect sense at the end but in a way that I totally didn't expect. I originally thought that Sophie and howl weren't in it at all but turns out (trying not to spoil too much) they were in it the whole time!
3:35 That actually explains why that little boy said, "Are you sure your not a witch Sophie?" And she replies, "No bit I'm the worst one of all" 😂💀 and then there's another part where she just transforms and looks in a mirror and says, "At least my clothes finally fit me" and now that makes sense😂
Ah, Howl’s Moving Castle! I love the movie and so it made me want to read the book. And since I love reading as well, I got the book when I was in college, and I loved it as much as the movie. They were different in a lot of ways but I could recognize what was in the movie and was not. In fact I bought the sequel books as well. They were pretty good too. Worth taking a look at!

I have read HMC 3 times all the way through and probably a dozen more times in parts while writing essays about it, and its plot continues to astound me. Like, just watching this video, you explained a number of things that I’d missed in the book. Diana Wynne Jones loved complex plot, but boy did she go ham with this one.
Oh my gosh I LOVE Diana Wynn Jones so much and as a filmmaker AND a book nerd, this is my FAVORITE adaptation because while they both tell slightly different stories they both hold their own SO well and Ghibli’s adaptation is still a wonderful, respectful addition to the story!!
One thing I usually appreciate about movie adaptations is that sometimes they consolidate characters who very well SHOULD be consolidated and sometimes they thin bloated plot lines. I haven't read the book, though, so I have to get that done before I really compare them.
I love the movie. The magic feels magical because few if any explanations are offered. As in all Ghibli movies, the scenery is gorgeous and makes me yearn for a "return to Nature". I love seeing Sophie become more confident. I think Markl is such an adorable character.
My favorite scenes are Sophie and the Witch of the Waste walking up the stairs, Suliman's spells to remove the powers of Howl and the Witch of the Waste, and the reunion of Markl and Sophie (their relationship fills me with such joy).
Jones doesn't have bloated plot lines, in any of her books. What she will have is confusing plotlines where oftentimes people are more than one character and time isn't always linear, and thing just get weird. Still one of the greatest writers of the 20th century (if not all time). Howl's Moving Castle is also a children's book, just keep that in mind.

Howl's Moving Castle is one of my all time favourite movies, and I love the book that precedes it. I remember being over the moon when I found out it was one of the books I had to read in my Children's Lit. class in university. I think one of my favourite moments from the book is the description of the fight scene with the Witch of the Waste, there's so much great imagery there. As for the movie, as odd as it sounds it's the beginning when Howl takes Sophie on that little walk through the air. It's displayed with such whimsy and the music pairs so beautifully with it

I just noticed at the end when Sophie kissed Turnip Head who turns out to be the missing prince, the Witch of the Waste and the Prince had a conversation like this.
Witch of the Waste: It looks like your true love is in love with someone else.
Prince: One thing you can always count on is that hearts change.
Does that mean the Prince is Sophie's true love? Since only "a true love's kiss" can break the curse. But it just so happened that she met Howl first? Hmmm.
Vernice Cendaña Ooh that’s my favorite scene in the movie!! I thought what happened between Sophie and Turnip Head was more of family love, or at least I think that’s how Sophie saw him. Idk if that sufficed to break the spell, but she treats Turnip Head with love and respect even if he’s just a ragged scarecrow, just like the other members living in the castle. I interpreted the conversation between the Witch of the Waste and Turnip Head as an unintentional reference to Howl, who literally changed his heart.

I was annoyed that, in the movie, when the Witch of the Waste lost her powers in the movie she became this sweet, slightly confused old lady. It felt like they were saying that a woman is so much nicer once she's been disempowered.
I really like that the message of the book seems to be "Be careful what you tell yourself about yourself, because as soon as you start to believe it, you'll make it true." This is a lesson all young people need to keep in mind!
The movie was pretty good, but I absolutely *LOVE* the book and have for years!
I saw it more as a "She used so much magic it poisened her" thing.
In the movie calcifer tells howel that if he uses too much/turns himself into a bird thing too many times he won't be able to turn back. The other wizzards could choose to work for the king keep their magic and turn into monsters, or lose their magic.
So I subconsiously saw using too much magic over a long period of time or at once as something that came with concequences. When Solomen took the witch of the waste magic she also took the begative side effects with it.
Sophie: *gets turn into an old lady*
Also sophie: Let me climb a mountain and lets see if the curse breaks
Me at the end of the movie: is the curse broken or her hair is just gray/white...?

If you like romantic comedy I recommend the anime Lovely Complex. It is really good, the art style is older but you have to give it a try. So fun and cute. Not romantic animes that are good: Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (there’s two versions, essentially it has the reboot which is Brotherhood that follows the manga and the original show just called Fullmetal Alchemist which diverges from manga because the manga wasn’t complete when the original show aired and instead of waiting the show writers came up with an alternate ending/story.). Inuyasha was the first anime I ever saw and it’s pretty good. Naruto I really liked. There’s quite a few good stories but unfortunately there’s a lot of subpar stories out there too, in my opinion. But enjoy! Wish I could relive watching some of these again.

If you like anime that is fantasy themed and a bit creepy/spooky without being gory, I highly recommend Rozen Maiden, it's an anime about living clockwork dolls that were created by an evil sorcerer battling to the death. It has both a lot of drama, action and funny moments since the dolls all have wildly different personalities and some of them are friends with each other. There's also some strange stuff like interdimensional travel and the dolls riding levitating suitcases. The story opens with a dude buying stuff hoping it will be cursed (why?!!) and then the dolls start to show up. It also has a very pretty and somewhat kawaii art style.
