    I think the thing that vent management is probably the absolute number one tip you can get when starting with either a #kamadojoe or even just a simple Weber kettle grill. I know it's something I've struggled with and it's a bit surprising how hard it is to find a good answer when you're brand new to the game. Thanks for helping with these #6mistakes. Always insightful and well stated.

    We use an electric LooftLiter to quickly ignite a small pile of lump in the center-top of the pile, and then just let the dome start heat soaking as the cooker comes up to temp. When the cooker is ready to receive the food, the dome is plenty hot.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the slower it comes up to temp, the hotter the dome will be. When using a GrillGun it’s hot quick but not heat soaked. 🍻

      The adapter works great. I use the smaller tanks for the grill on my boat and also for my flybridge heater so it really does cut down on the bottle waste and is much less expensive.

    I do think it is usually best to spend money on quality. However, I did go to Harbor Freight Tools and bought a weed burner for $25 that does the does the same job as the more expensive lighters. Had a bit of a cheap weld for the halo thing, but still works well. Makes me feel a bit more manly and I get a little more exercise carrying out the propane tank and using a wrench to attach the hose. I always use sunglasses and a protective glove when using it to light my charcoal. Really helps speed things up for a cook when I come home from work.

    Ok so say I am shooting for 250 degrees. The thermometer says I’m there but the dome still isn’t heat soaked. Let’s assume at this point things are still wide open on top and bottom vents. What do I do? Start closing down? Or wait til fully soaked the close it down.

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I generally will shut it down around 250-275 and let it get heat soaked. Shutting the vent down to target settings slows airflow and helps it heat soak quicker. 🍻

    • @BG-jx2fj
      @BG-jx2fj 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok so don’t overshoot the temp on the dome thermometer basically. Stop there, tighten it up, let the dome soak then start cooking. Thanks a bunch.
      Btw you are the first person I’ve seen saying to only adjust heat with the top vent. Love the simplicity of that idea. Excited to try that out!

    • @RumandCook
      @RumandCook  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah you can blow by it a bit, but it’s tough to get it back down if you go too high for too long. If it shoots up 50F+ and you catch it, you can bring it back down no problem before it’s heat soaked.
      Thanks! 🍻

    I got a Kamado Joe from a retailer who had it completely assembled. I couldn't transport it home completely assembled so I had to do some disassemble. Being a newbie I took off all 12 nuts on the back holding the hinge assembly on and had to open the lid to remove the hinge. I got that off, put it in the car, and got everything to where I now want to reassemble. Problem, reinstalling the hinge from an open position (no zip ties holding it closed and no spacer, washer and nut locking the spring closed. I guess I have to somehow compress the hinge and get the spacer, washer and nut on so I can reinstall the hinge. Is that correct?

    Starting a KJ, I use a KJstarter cube and once the coal shows some ember, grab my batter powered leaf blower, slight squeeze of the trigger…will quickly move the coals into a good burn and I can then begin the process of stabilizing the temp about 5 minutes after lighting the starter cube

    Great info. I've got the Akorn kamado which is owned by #kamadojoe and have made many of the #6mistakes you talked about. The trickiest thing was getting it dialed in. Once I figured out to use micro adjustments to the dial and give it about 10-15 minutes, it's been all good. I also didn't let it get heat soaked at first and led me chasing temps for a while. Great tips, hope they help someone not make the same mistakes.

    I'm a woodworker and have multiple Bessey K clamps. I used two on either side of the bolt that I should have put the spacer, washer, and nut on. I squeezed the clamp into submission and compressed enough to get the spacer, washer and nut on. I then removed the clamps, tightened the nut further and reinstalled the hinge back on the grill bottom, put the top on the bottom and reattached all 12 washers and nuts. Had to do minor realigning of the top. Torqued the 12 nuts to about 6 or 7 lbs each and I don't think any are going to come loose. I'll check by hand from time to time. I then removed the nut, washer, and nut. Then I had to readjust the spring load on the lid. Everything is now good to go. American Ingenuity. MAGA
