    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lloydhiggins3008ok cool, i am hoping to make a video on reducing hesitation soon.
      But in the mean time consider these things:
      - When at a junction/roundabout look for gaps! many people look for cars and then get overwhelmed
      - Go to a quiet road and practice drag starts! Moving off promptly and fast. Try this with and without the handbrake and see which you prefer.
      - Prepare for the gaps, when you see a potential gap it is vital you get your feet ready, so gas and biting point (or just below bite), you do not have to go but you are ready if after double checking it is all good. Many people miss gaps as they do not prepare and by the time they are prepared the gap is gone.

    • @lloydhiggins3008
      @lloydhiggins3008 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I have had a tendency to get fixated and want to know where other cars are going rather than just looking for a safe gap to take. Thanks for your tips.

      the bends or just brake a little bit with good steering. Thank you

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lilaalaoui5058 it depends on how sharp the bends are and what car you are driving. But generally 2nd seems a bit too low, unless a very sharp 90degree bend, like when turning into a side road. I find 3rd or 4th gear are normally best for country road bends.
      Perhaps 3rd gear in a diesel and 4th in a petrol, as a petrol can cope with higher gear better and pull away, a diesel may struggle to accelerate in 4th gear, but like i say depends on the car a bit.
      Sorry i can't give a straight answer nothing is black and white with driving, it all depends on various things.

    I'd say speed up the boring bits, but I must say I am finding these very useful. I also have my test booked in March and had to change my instructor because my original instructor changed to automatic just over a month before my test. My new instructor has made me doubt my driving abilities completely and also changed cars from a Citeron C3 to a KIA. Have you got any tips that could help me?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In terms of changing cars, firstly take it back a few steps by driving on quieter roads to start with, your instructor should be doing this, going onto busy roads and junctions when you are not use to the car will put big dents in your confidence.
      Sit at the side of the road and practice the controls of the new car, so practice setting the gas and finding the biting point, do it several times until you can do it without thinking.
      Go to a gentle hill and practice holding the car still by balancing the gas and biting point, move forwards a bit and then re-balance.
      If it is the gears, again just park up on a quiet road to make sure you can do them while stationary without thinking, if you can then you will only get better while moving by practicing it again and again.

    I wouldn't say a fault should happen at "27:21" cause it's roadworks so it isn't in your control (due to 1 lane only be available) and the vehicles joining have a give-way point anyway as your already on the roundabout, that's like going around with built up traffic in peak time you wouldn't give way to vehicles who are trying to enter if your already on isn't that the same thing? buuut i might be wrong?
    Question: What about if the roundabout is traffic light controlled would you wait behind the line or continue through? I'm unsure on this scenario lol

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you do have priority, however the highway code also states you should keep junctions clear when stopping in traffic ques. The entrance to the roundabout is a junction, so technically the candidate is blocking the junction. If he held back the cars could have entered and gone ahead or turned right at the roundabout, thus reducing traffic ques.
      If it was traffic lights controlled it is highly likely there would be a yellow box junction, in which case you must not stop there. In fact in London you would get fined if you stopped in a yellow box. Even without a box junction you should not block a junction, if you do you are likely to annoy a lot of drivers.

    Old video I know, so hoping to get an answer - 20:15 I thought changing lanes was forbidden on the zigzag lines at pedestrian crossings? Or is that just for overtaking cars?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's no overtaking the leading motor vehicle or no parking / stopping.
      The main thing is to understand WHY.
      The reason why if the pedestrian crossing creates a risk, if you overtake you view of the crossing would be blocked and you could overtake into the path of a crossing pedestrians. Parking / stopping also creates the same risk due to blocking view of the crossing.
      Just changing lanes is less risky, as long as you can clearly see both sides of the crossing are clear and no risk of light changing or pedestrian stepping into the road.

    Can I take the test driving my own car? Should it have the "L" plate somewhere? I am not a learner or new driver at all (I drive since I'm 15, now in my 30's), been driving in the UK in the last months with my international licence, but need to take this test in a few weeks

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As you probably know you can drive in the UK for up to 12 months on your non-UK licence, so no l plates required for that bit.
      HOWEVER, in order to continue driving after 12 months you need to apply for a UK provisional licence and pass the theory and practical test, for the practical test you can use you car but you must display L plates.
      www.gov.uk/driving-test/using-your-own-car
      I would strongly recommend you take some driving lessons for an approved driving instructor before taking a practical test as drivers from other countries often fail their UK driving test several times due to their driving standards not being up to scratch (I believe the pass rate for foreign licence holders with no training is worst than a true learner driver taking their test). Especially important at the moment you only take test when you are ready as test dates are rare, so if you take 6 tests to pass rather than 1 you have used an extra 5 test slots that could have been used by others who are desperate for a test date.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Good question, something people often get confused and concerns about.
      It is all about driving at the appropriate speed.
      Ask your self the question, might I need to brake for something soon?
      If the answer is "YES" then driving below the speed limit is a good idea, like in your example if the road is tight, perhaps due to parked cars, then you drive slowly incase a door opens of someone steps out. But if you can keep good clearance from the parked cars, about 1 meter, then you should be able to do the speed limit assume there are no other hazards.
      If the answer is "NO", for example the road is clear and you can see ahead very far, no parked cars, no traffic lights, no junctions, no corner, nothing that is going to cause you to slow then it would be safe to build speed and get near the speed limit.
      The examiners want to see you driving like a driver, not like a learner.

      @tomlodge1329 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only few naturally gifted drivers could do this first time if they never done the route before. I mean 3rd exit for straight on and people say roundabouts are a nightmare. You should see the Spiral roundabout in Chester. Post house it’s called, staying within those dotted markings is mind numbing.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tomlodge1329 yes you are correct, which is why continuing to learn, not lessons necessarily, when you have passed is essential.
      Learn from mistakes, look back at junctions which confused you, seek answer, do advanced driving lessons.
      I do all of this and I feel quite comfortable to drive in any area without prior knowledge, I drove to Leicester a few years ago and it has lots of weird roundabout but i was fine, drive on big motorways with lots of weird layouts, drive abroad, drove to south London yesterday without any issues.
      But this is only because I have had lots of training and it is my job to understand all these things.
      I think the key thing is to be calm and confident to drive at the speed your brains needs to be going at to process the information, and also having the confidence to go off route if you mis read something.

      @@xbluewolfy1741 ah ok.
      I have heard about the thing that if you signal to pull away and someone lets you go you fail.
      Best advise if to only signal when you have a gap to go, just no point sitting there with a signal on when unsafe to go imo.
      Only time I would consider signalling to create a gap is if on a busy road, and typically on test you do not stop on busy roads (well at least around here).
      As for how it is marked on the test I have had people do it before and then car behind slows and lets them go, candidate had pulled away and examiner has then thanked the driver behind, no more mention of the incident.
      I suspect the myth that it is a fail is a case of Chinese whispers, no doubt it happened to someone once but there was more to the incident, like they pull out before the car behind had slowed and let them go, they kinda used the signal to force their way out.

      - You MUST do push pull steering
      - You MUST hold the wheel at 10 to 2

      Don't really know much about beta blockers, such as how strong it is as you have to be careful for it to to be so strong that is makes you unfit to drive, but things like Rescue Remedy are ok.

      That aside:
      - Focus on what your instructor has taught you
      - Let the examiner be responsible for assessing your driving and directing you, don't try to assess your own driving and go a different way if needed and let the examiner redirect you.
      - Demonstrate that you no longer should be a learner, i.e. driver confidently, safely and legally.

    Hi there quick question in the test I thought you had 2 marked manoeuvres? Here he had only 1?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a lot of people has this misconception, there use to be 2 manoeuvres nearly 10 years ago, but since then there has always been just one reversing manoeuvre.
      They are more interested in your general driving ability in various situations rather than your ability to reverse. And generally 1 bit of reversing is enough to assess your ability.

      Thanks for the response unfortunately I failed my first time :( got a serious fault for hesitation because I didn’t pull out on a 60mph main road :( not sure if this is fair but nothing I can do, other than that only had 3 minors and no of which were hesitation

      @@jakebromage7924 I guess it depends what was coming, if anything, and how long it took for you to work out it was safe to go.
      Of course being a 60mph road, where many serious accidents happen from people pulling out at junctions at the wrong time, you need to be careful not to rush it, much safer to be a bit hesitant on such a road imo

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear you were unsuccessful on your test.
      Providing you were going 20mph (ish), which if the roundabout was clear then this is likely your speed, then most cars will struggle away and still work in 4th gear without stalling.
      Did you have your instructor sat in on your test? If not then it might be an idea next time, as they can give you a second opinion over your drive and help you to understand any areas of improvement.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No he should not have stopped, it was amber not red. Trying to stop at that point would have been extremely dangerous as he would have had to do an emergency stop.
      If you look in the highway code amber means (not exact quote):
      "You MUST stop behind the stop line, you may only proceed if you have passed the stop line or to stop would cause an accident"
      Make sure you subscribe to my channel and keeping watching as I am due to make a video about traffic lights soon, they are one of the top 5 reasons people fail, as they either stop when they should go or go when they should stop.

      So driving at 30mph on a motorway when everyone else is doing 60-70 is safe?
      Of course not precisely what happens on this test, but another example.
      You need to be driving at a similar and predictable speed to other traffic, failing to do that will make you unpredictable and increase the danger.

      You say you got 9 faults but made 14 mistakes?
      If you got either of those amount of minor fault you would have passed.
      You must have also got a serious or dangerous fault.

    Your ambiguous language must sometimes confuse your students. Why say "right lane" instead of right-hand lane? It wasn't always obvious if you were telling us he'd chosen the correct lane or the right-hand lane. He did a great drive on his test and deserved to pass.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I can honestly say it has never confused a student.
      I know what you mean but I never use the phrase you are in the 'right lane', as in 'correct lane', I would say 'left lane', 'right lane' or 'correct lane'. Never having any overlap.
      In fact for some people saying you are in the 'right-hand lane' would confuse people, what does a 'hand' have to do with anything???
      Every one understands things differently, like I say I have never had a problem with using 'left lane' or 'right lane', but if I did I would adapt the phrase to suit the student.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To give you another example in very rare cases some people get confused by "At the roundabout turn right". Any ideas why? Does that phrase make sense to you?

    I have failed for driving slowly , he was going 50 on 70 speed limit and examiner did’nt mark .any advice pls ?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are no set 'rules' for what is not a fault, what is a driver fault and a serious fault. It alls depends on how the individual examiner considers the individual circumstances.
      In terms of faults for driving too slow you might consider are:
      - How long are you driving at that speed for, 1 minute? 10 minutes?
      - is it effecting anyone? is the road busy or quiet?
      - why are you driving at the slower speed? Are there any major hazard to consider or a 'clear' road?
      So basically doing 50mph on a 70mph road could be quite a serious thing, like on a busy motorway, but other times doing 50mph on a 70mph could be way too fast, perhaps when negotiating roundabout on a dual carriageway.
      Essentially you need to drive like a driver, if you are driving like a learner and being overtaken on the high speed roads or driving un-smoothly in build up areas due to driving too fast, then you will still be a learner at the end of the test.
      Prove to the examiner that you are no longer a learner and can drive confidently and smoothly then you are likely to end up with a full driving licence.

  • @Chloe-gd8qk

    If you can’t do the manoeuvre in the test and you try twice and still get it wrong and you completely fail to do your is this a minor or would you fail?

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is not a set amount of time you need to do it in, but generally you should be able to correct without restarting the whole thing. But if you had to restart the whole thing twice and the examiner could see you were really struggling then it would be a serious fault, examiner would just say not to worry with manoeuvre and to drive on.

    • @Chloe-gd8qk
      @Chloe-gd8qk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Argh I really struggle with the manoeuvres, mainly bay parking. I can drive fine it’s just the manoeuvres. I just get myself confused.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chloe sometimes just focusing on the actual manoeuvre is too much when you struggle with reversing in general, for example which way to steer and where straight is etc. Do you have to think really hard when reversing? Is it natural?
      To get more comfortable with reversing in general got to an empty car park and try some of the things shown on the below video.
      th-cam.com/video/V91K9giVIAU/w-d-xo.html
      Your instructor may want to step in but you need to work this out in your own head, by going to an empty car park you can just experiment while your instructor stays quiet, if you get confused get out of the car to see if you can work it out.
      If you try and you can reverse around a car park successfully then the manoeuvres will be one much easier. It is not about remember the routine and reference points it is more about understanding what you are doing.
