    If you're thinking about getting a real book it's worth noting that there are different editions for different types of instruments - if you're using it for piano/keys you'll want the edition for C instruments (rather than Bb, Eb, or F)

    I love books, I love music 🎶 but I'm only here because I heard "Still Not Rite" today...I was intrigued, it was peaceful and lulled me but at the same time incited me to chorus...and it wasn't "synthesized", ( yes, I did it and make no apogies for this or the next)
    My love for it was organic💜
    Upon my search this video was the one that came up on YT ! Thanks for sharing your gift.
    Thanks for the music and the hope in knowing that ppl, men, still read books!

    If you want more of a history narrative, Analog Days is a great read covering not just Moog but all the other early synthesis inventors and artists. Great to give you some perspective in how far the technology has come, and how people thought about it in its early days.

    Great suggestions! I'm actually a few chapters into the Analog Synthesis one right now (great way to brush up on the fundamentals), and I think there's a fair chance the other ones you recommend can be found at the public library. Don't really dig the sample CD bundled with the book, though. Pretty clinical and uninspiring, compared to the kind of sonic wonderment those machines are really capable of unleashing. In any case, great content as always, and I for one wouldn't mind more book videos!

    The next step up from Analog Synthesis as you described it would be something I personally recommend - despite how rare it is - *Synthesis* by Herbert A. Deutsch. My edition from 1985 may be "out of dare", but it even more deeply covers the in's and out's of analog synthesis and history (up to that time). (One example as I read it is how very few people acknowledge the true origins of the Prophet 5 architecture in the earliest Oberheim models, whereas this book definitely does.)

    About that analog synthesizer book...I allways try to find a book which represent's itself with inviting text and keeps me reading. Up until now, I only possess such books which tell you "this book is based on [insert free app-synthesizer here]" and starts instructing you on design of basic functions with the wellknown buildingblocks. The problem to me is, it is not inviting as soon, as you have built some patches yourself in the past. The newer books tend to be dogmatic and won't really improve your knowledge to explore further. As a person who is still learning music theory but advanced enough in synthesis for around 12 years, I don't feel inspired. - From what I see, that book you showed let's you think "Oh I allready know that one" but still like reading about it again. Nice video!

    The Complete Guide to Synthesizers by Devarahi (1982) is still great for analog subtractive and classic, old-school modular synthesis. Free pdf available here:
    www.tinyloops.com/index.php?page=books
    Devarahi emphasizes attentive, thoughtful listening and also talks a bit about synthesis as a meditative exercise. It guides you through a series of increasingly complex experiments in patching designed by the author on his ARP 2600. Probably good with any of the recent incarnations of the 2600.

    Is a person with a monophonic synth there a book you recommend for monophonic synths or keyboards

  • @rars0n
    @rars0n 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's rather unfortunate that the first two books you mentioned are so hard to find at a reasonable price (Amazon has the first one for $100, which is frankly way too much given its limited depth, and the second for $125 used or $160 new, which is probably actually worth it for someone who is going to seriously use the book).
    Fred Welsh's Synthesizer Cookbook is one I see come up all the time when looking for synthesizer books. It's got good reviews, but a few people seem to have some of the common complaints when it comes to synthesizer books (author bias/opinion as opposed to objective presentation, too much focus on one aspect and not enough on another, etc). So I'm not sure how good a book it really is.
    The good thing is that there's a bunch of different books available and I'm sure anyone looking for more synth resources can find something they will like among them. I definitely appreciate that you went beyond just "synthesis" in your recommendations to include books that deal with music itself, because that's the other half of the equation when it comes to making music with synths.
